- Who all remember this basic Cell Biology Experiment?
This simple procedure allows you to visualize the different stages of cell division.
Onion root tip is being used because meristematic cells are actively dividing (to make the roots grow). Thus, you can see the different stages of cell division.
If you look closely, you can see cells in interphase (most of them), as well as cells in prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cells that recently completed cytokinesis.
Let me know in the comments how many cell division stages you were able to see!
The HCl is used to soften the cell walls so that I can squash the onion root tip on the slide to have a very thin layer of cells for better microscope observation.
