May I please ask a silly question. Meiosis occurs before fertilisation. How is the crossing over in Prophase 1 happening, where two chromosomes from maternal and paternal chromosomes share genetic material if fertilization has not occurred?
Crossing over exchanges DNA between homologous chromosomes inherited from parents, not directly between parents. This process increases genetic diversity in offspring.
For e.g. humans have 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs of chromosomes. Among these 23 pairs, in each pair one chromosome is of maternal parent and one is of paternal parent. So in the meiocyte, the maternal chromosome is that chromosome who was inherited by the organism performing meiosis from their mother and the paternal chromosome is that chromosome the organism has inherited from their father (not just sex chromosomes but all 23 pairs) so the maternal and paternal chromosomes recombining are of the organism's mother and father not of the organism and their partner. And so this is before fertilization.
Wow thanks sir, I just understood meiosis clearly after so many years of trying to get the understanding. I will recommend this video to my colleague students.
