My mother was a fan dancer in Burlesque in the 1930's. Her fans looked just like these. She took me to see Sally Rand when I was about 10. Sally was elderly then. My mother stopped her professional dancing when her 2 trunks with all her costumes were stolen off a train. She then married my father and had me.
@@PeepingUkulele Maybe you are like me. In my case, it's ADD. I was just doing the same peeping ukulele and realized I was missing the dance. She is so elegant and beautifully lit that she looks like an apparition.
@@PeepingUkulelemusic starts with a version of Debussy’s “Claire de lune”, the rest I think is just musical arrangements to match her dancing number. Greetings from Mexico.
Ken Beck...that is a incredible Family story!! Two year's ago an Italian Lady here in Philadelphia (age 97) told me she saw Sally perform, I knew who Sally was,and was completely blown away when she told me she had seen her perform the fan dance.
When I was 13 in 1972, I won a pair of tickets to a performance of "The Big Show of 1928" in Seattle. My mom took me and it was fun. Rudy Vallee emceed and warbled a few tunes, Louis Jordan sang, an actress named Diosa Costello did a number but it's Sally Rand I remember most. She was 67 by then but still had a trim body and she performed this on-stage. It was a pretty erotic dance and sitting next to Mom meant a little squirming on my part for a couple minutes because Sally still had it going on...at least from 20 rows back she did. I was aware of what a sensation she'd been in 1933 (as well as what a huge star Rudy Vallee had been even before then), so it was cool to be able to watch history come alive.
Very Beautiful and at a beautiful times sweet and more Innocent those days.Which we could be tike this now...I'm a seventies kid growing up and wish I a time machine.
"SALLY RAND" (in the person of the actress Peggy Davis) actually fan danced for the Mercury Astronauts in the movie "The Right Stuff" based on the book by Tom Wolfe.
Sally looks fragile and ethereal, but she definitely had some muscles to be able to move those heavy fans so gracefully. That style of fan, with long, trailing feather boas on it, is surprisingly heavy and awkward to move. I say this from experience.
Sally Rand was our dance teacher at Downtown Community School in NYC,NY She taught us folk dancing from America & foreign countries😊 Now that was an experirnce
It's a shame that stuff like this is forgotten. Such a beautiful woman and such a beautiful dance. Wait I just realized that I don't think she has any clothes on
I belong to a film group and we have a doubt !!! Anyone know what role Sally Rand played in the 1932 movie The Sing of the Cross !!! The monkey scene or the crocodile scene !!! Thank you
Jesse Paea What they had was _35mm film ,_which is far better than this 720dpi video, and which is routinely transferred to 4000x3000pixels per 35mm frame to preserve the quality. Of course how good the surviving prints from 1934 are is another matter.

This is one of my all time favourite burlesque acts. Sally always cheers me up on a rainy day, even nearly 100 years later ❤
Sally Rand, aka Helen Beck was my grandfather's sister. My great grandfather was William Beck Sally's father. Just a little family connection. :-)

Ken,there is a lady in comments saying she was married to Sally's cousin Jeffery Beck.
That's so awesome! Its so nice to learn something so personal about the beautiful dancer you have just seen on video. She dances like an angel
Ken, we must be related! My grandfather was Kevey Beck, also part of Helen’s family.
Wao!.👍
her performance was absolutely breath taking! So graceful and elegant.
I like how the soft focus gives it an air of unreality.
Sally Rand absolutely beautiful! This is performance she gave was beautiful and wonderful. She graced so elegantly with those fans.
80 years late and still amazing
Sally looks like a real live ANGEL. Loved her.
Thank you mom for teaching me that art is in the eye of the beholder. So beautiful
Art is nothing of the sort.
A real treat, a feast for the eyes and a delight to all the senses 😊
How truly, truly talented this woman was, elusive, , beautiful. oh if only I could be!
This is art
Beautiful, elegant and tasteful. What a pleasure and a lost art.
Pure and beautiful escapism.

What an amazing story. I love it!
Boy do I miss these types of performers. So sexy and such a fantasy. Now a day clubs could learn so much from the past.
Burlesque still exists in this way! I encourage you to look for shows in your area, it's changed a little bit but is largely similar.
Beauty in motion! Thank You soo much for sharing.

@@xanderrussell317 you can buy them with the boas on each stave, and yes still made with ostrich feathers, but they are very expensive!
Absolutamente lindo.
Exquisite. None of the modern dancers have this ethereal presence. Some of it is the back lighting and soft focus for sure- but really

Canal maravilhoso!
Here's to Sally and Ayn Rand.
Clair de lune...Debussy! J' adore!
Sure wasn't Bolaro!
That was the name of the movie this was in.
Lovely, pure class.
A beautiful lady's hard work 👌
Maybe I can get my students to pay attention to Debussy.
The way Sally Rand held her fans it's impossible to get a good look at Debussy!

Even the ostriches love it.
Incredible
I was married to her Nephew in the early 80's, Jeffery Beck, son of carlos Beck which was helens 1/2 brother.
Omg your a Celebrity yourself 😊😁💙💜
So lucky
There is a man above who said Sally Rand was his Great Grandfather's Sister!

Sally Rand on What's My Line
I wonder how many ostriches died to make her a star.
maybe they were just plucked
Larry Foust If you would know anything the ostridge they do not have to kill them to pluck their feathers
What does it matter, they'd be dead by now anyway...
This chick drove a badass car. #JayLeno'sgaragesentmehere
