  • Mary Tyler Moore, the Oscar-nominated actress best known for her roles in the television sitcoms "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," has died. She was 80.
"Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine," her publicist, Mara Buxbaum, told ABC News. "A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile."
Moore's portrayal of the single career woman Mary Richards in her eponymous 1970s show arrived alongside the Women's Movement, making her a role model for generations of women, even though Moore didn't consider herself a feminist. The show, which centered on Richards' work as a producer in a fictional Minneapolis newsroom and her life as a single woman, earned 29 Emmy Awards, the most for any scripted series until "Frasier" won its 30th Emmy.

In the late '90's when I was living near Milbrook, NY, I was at a 4 way stop sign and looked over to see a woman with a gigantic smile waving 'hello' to me. At first, I had no idea who she was but at second look, I realized it was Mary Tyler Moore! She looked just like she did on television and was so friendly and sweet. A bit later, I stopped in the local bakery and told the clerk who I had just run into and she told me Mary was a regular at the bakery and really was as sweet as she seemed. R.I.P. Mary! You always inspired me.

Mary was a special woman. Overcame a lot of family problems. Her show was unique because it showed a single woman breaking barriers and showed women could do anything men could do. While I may not be as choked up over her death, as I was over Carrie Fishers death, I have a lot of respect for Mary and what she achieved over her life. She was a big activist on childhood diabetes also. "Your Gonna Make It After All!" She will be missed dearly. RIP Mary.

My daughter 23 just graduated from college and landed a great job with a big tv station as a news producer 3 hrs away from home. First person I thought of Mary Richards when she got the job.Moving to a new town all by herself not knowing anyone and starting her career. Even though she had never heard of the MTM show I encouraged her to at least take a peek at it. She also told me she was inspired by Oprah Winfrey to become a journalist with ironically Oprah was inspired by MTM.
    RIP Mary Tyler Moore!!

She is one of the people I grew up with. She was my mother's favorite actress so whenever The Mary Tyler Moore Show was on, my mum would always tune in so it was on quite often in my house. Mary herself and the series reminds me of a simpler time when all we had to worry about was high inflation. Even though I didn't have any sort of "crush" on her (I always preferred Rhoda to Mary), she defined television for me in the 70s. Thank you for the memories Mary and may your memory be eternal.

She was so beautiful and funny, I had a crush on her as a kid. Such an icon on 60s-70s TV. Who could forget the intro sequence to the Mary Tyler Moore show. Another great, from a great age, gone.

from the first days of me getting to watch TV to recently she lit up the scree. For those who want to know, she had an incredible place on acreage in Conn. and is buried near there.

The TV shows then are classics. Filled with family love, support, innocence, good communication, kindness and wholesomeness not like the many shows today that want to shock and awe their audience and filled with garbage. I miss those days off television so much!
