A Polyglot Meets A Deaf Fan… This Happened!

- A while back, my friend Brian (Argentinian Food Vlogger in China) came to visit DC, and we went out to surprise Chinese people in the largest “Chinatown” in Washington, D.C. (Rockville) and make friends. I ended up meeting a group of Deaf students from Gallaudet University, the #1 school in the U.S. for the Deaf. One of theme ended up being a fan of Brian and I! Everyone was super nice and it ended up being one of the cooler interactions I’ve had since I started filming these videos. I hope you guys enjoy!
In this video you’ll see two latinos speaking Chinese (White guys speaking Chinese?), but we were also speaking Cantonese, speaking Spanish, and speaking Italian throughout the day. Anyway, we had some awesome conversations where we surprised Chinese people and they had some great reactions!
I love learning foreign languages because you get to meet and have conversations with people in a way that you probably never would otherwise. If you’re considering learning another language, I highly recommend it, and right now while we’re all locked up is a great time to do it!

That lady with the hearing difficulties was such a sweetheart, i loved how friendly you guys were towards her as it must have took guts to approach you like that. Bless you guys
Us Deaf people don't have "Hearing difficulties". That's like saying Hearing people have cognitive difficulties in comprehending that there is a completely separate culture that doesn't need sounds at all. Therefore, it is more apt to see the Hearing society as disabled.
@@Weirdpoe The lady said 'my hearing isn't very good' so i didn't assume she was deaf in that sense, i always associated 'deaf' as cannot hear at all, but what you have to understand as well, my mother is like this lady and my mother calls it hearing difficulties so who am i to argue.
But in regards to my comment, i know my mother is very sensitive about her hearing and very self-conscious about it, so i thought maybe the girl is similar as she apologizes about it when ofc why should she, my mum would never have the guys to approach ppl she doesn't know and isn't comfortable with like that which is why i think she's brave.
@@Weirdpoe She identified herself with "i don't hear very well", which, simply to rearrange the words, is a difficulty hearing. He meant no offense, and was just operating from her own statement. No reason to get upset.
@@yushis1 Which means: Hard of Hearing, not hearing difficulties.. If you don't know what you talking about, don't try to lecture others, who actually pointing out what the commentstarter said wrong.
Yes, it was lovely!
Darn, I thought they were going to start signing ASL.
same haha i was anticipating on it
Same lol
Thought so too, that’s why I clicked the video, darn. He might know 8 languages but ASL isn’t one of them.
@@samanthagasmire9508 clearly! And it really should be one to know!
I was hoping for that, too. But since there are so many different sign languages out there the chances of them signing the same one would have been not very high, I assume. It's a shame that there isn't just one sign language for the whole world.
I love how Chinese people go from "Ugh, what does this American want" to "Oh wow, that's hilarious! Tell me about it"
Yeah, the showing of knowledge and respect of other peoples culture can make them open up :) It's nice to see in these kinds of videos
Literally when I go to an Mexican restaurant.
Yup. Languages are great for openers
He left China because of covid. I wonder if he went back. Although it was very bad there, they did a very good job of handling it compared to most of the rest of the world. Most non Asian countries really struggled with it.

Maybe they were talking a lot but Chris cut the video.
She damn cute 🔥
The encounter with the young lady who went to the University for the Deaf in the tea shop was a touching moment. The young lady at the end of the video did seem like she was following you. Who would have thought that she worked at both locations. Definitely made me chuckle.
University for the deaf... THE University for the Deaf to be exact: it is the only Uni in the world where Sign language is used to communicate and teach people in a variation of topics on Uni level...
Hearing impaired is a word combination only used by hearing people who has no clue about the subject.
@@shersmk90 I gotcha. I will correct it on top. My bad. It's good to be educated every day.:) You take care now.
It's also possible that the shop the young lady worked at is connected to that bakery like they are part of a large mall. Even if that wasn't the case, she knows those people at the bakery (otherwise she wouldn't be coming from the back of the store).
@@jovitadomingo8108 or she has two jobs...
@@jovitadomingo8108 - It seemed almost like she worked at the first place and then maybe her parents owned the second place, perhaps?
I'm just sitting here trying to wrap my mind around how you can read lips in Chinese... I can't even *hear* the tones correctly.
What? He wasn't lip reading, she was. She was speaking. Some desf people learn to speak in school to communicate easier with hearing people
@@JustLIkerapunzel I dont think they were talking about the guy.. the point is how hard it must be to read lips when someone's speaking chinese because the meaning of a word can be so different depending on the tone, which you can't detect without hearing.
@@Loriani93 they likely use context to understand what the word someone is trying to say is.
Also, the girl they were interacting with wasn't fully deaf. She stated she had hearing issues. It looks like several of the people she was with were fully deaf, but she clearly had at least some hearing ability.
@@KhronicD if she has limited hearing, it could be that she can hear tones better than the syllables, and that helps inform her lip reading ability.. I’m not deaf but I have auditory processing issues, I often can hear a persons tone clearly while they’re speaking, but can’t understand what they’re saying.

@@pdrey100 yeah it’s honestly so gross how some of the commenters treat asian women and fetishize the shit outta them, and then question why Asians hate Americans and foreigners
I love how chinese people are so surprised and happy when they see people that can understand and talk to them in their language. I'm learning mandarin, by the way.
thats just because our language is so hard that we don't even want to learn it and then we see a foreigner speaking we're surprised and happy
加油加油!
When you speak Chinese to chinese people it shows that you appreciate their culture and you are now in the family :]
That is the beauty of speaking with the people with their mother tongue. More than surprise, we really appreciate you for trying!
let me tell you something what do you think chinese langunge isn't difficult in the world? if you do ,,then you got the answer we dont see much white ,black people can speak chinese well and 马斯瑞 ‘s chinese is best of foreigners i've ever seen ,。。。。。
The moment when they met Liu Yudan, it was super heart warming! Honestly, she shouldn't even have apologized for her disability, "sorry that I can't speak well and you might not understand me". I feel more sorry that in our society we still are lacking in resources to make their life more easier and the fact that we don't even speak our country's SL, at least the basic stuff, how to read and make some words.
I asume she was just saying that cause it might sometimes be hard for chinese people to understand her, therefore she asumed for him as a non native chinese speaker it must be even harder
She was amazing actually speaking mandarin and signing ASL as well.
That takes polyglot to another level.
I actually think it would be awesome to watch these guys practice some sign language. I know it'd be hard to make a video out of probably but would be cool to pick up a language that kinda transcends spoken language barriers. No matter where you go in the world there'll be people signing.
Chris showed here that he can even speak sign language with a Beijing accent.
很在!
Chris' Italian was just perfect. He sounded like a guy from Milan.
Brian is the argentinian one
i know little italian, just basic things i learned from school, im from buenos aires argentina, and i can tell you that the "Español porteño" (the "port" argentinian spanish) has a lot of sound influence from italian. Its really italian sounding (this is NOT generalized through the country). Its possible that he achieves this natural sound because of the way our accent in spanish works here! Italian is a beautiful language with a really beautiful sound!

I am always amazed by Brian's English. It's his first time in the U.S and his English is awesome and always has been.
I just can't believe how good he is with languages. It's like he is a native person but of every country 😂, I wish I had those abilities with languages
I can clearly see that you have learned at least one. And I wouldn't be surprised if it's not even your native tongue. Learning language is all about repetition and practice. Get a language learning app and dedicate 15-30 minutes a day to it. You'll pick it up faster than you might think.
I had a friend tell me the same . She learned French, Italian and spanish and she said she literally cannot retain any of the information she learned. But for me I’ve learned Asl, Chinese and some Japanese and am pretty good at speaking them I’ve been told. But I wasn’t always good . It takes a lot of practice
Asmodeus learning a language is not about repetition and practice, its about input, output and learning from context. it doesn't matter how much practice and repetition you do if you arent comprehending what youre doing. children don't learn languages by repetition, and neither do adults. its the reason why most people dont get fluent or even at a talking level in a language when taking a class in highschool, because theyre all repetition based.
@@koo-core7274 So true! I "learned" Spanish from second grade through high school and it seemed like they were teaching us the same thing every year. I think the 'farthest' we got was ordering food, like, okay? I love the language, but I didn't have anyone to really communicate with. I picked up some more, working at a school. But it was more 'spanglish' than Spanish.

I have never seen your videos before. I was quite fascinated by the fact that she was able to read your lips while you were speaking Chinese. That is NOT an easy language to do that with😳 She is amazing!!💗 I do think you both should try and learn ASL 😄 I have been using ASL to speak with my autistic children for many years. It was easier for them than using actual words. 👍 Really great video guys ❤️
Hopefully you still speak to them as well so they can get used to hearing and responding to people
@@agr0nianTV They are 20, 19 and 15 now (the older ones I used sign language with, my last 2 autistic children were verbal from day 1). We always spoke aloud as we used sign. That is traditinal..even for those speaking to the deaf so others can understand as well. 👍 All my children can speak well now.(this was over 15 years ago) They are much further ahead than most autistics who started at the same level, but unfortunately other health conditions have led to regressions and much more needed support care. Turns out, autism was the easy part 😄
the sentence structure is confusing me sometimes.
I wonder how well it lines up to spoken English if you're doing both at the same time
@@pfeffernuisance Do you mean ASL or Chinese? I can say that ASL does not line up with the sentence structure of spoken English. Some will sign that way(how English is spoken), but that is not how ASL is done.

That girl that recognized him and asked for a selfie...super cute!
If you were to learn another language, ASL would be a good one. Since you live in washington, I suspect there would be a larger population that uses ASL due to Gallaudet University being the only university in the world that is specifically designed for the deaf and hard of hearing. Would be really cool to see you go out and use ASL just as you go out and speak other languages. Knowing ASL will open you up to a whole new community that you probably never knew existed.
