Don't forget that learning languages is difficult, so a lot of these non-english speaking people who live in america are actually somewhat ashamed of not being able to communicate with others very well. This especially applies in a service environment like a restaurant. They want to give the best service out of pride and simple economic necessity. When they feel they can communicate fully with someone, it's a relief.

@3:52 i recently started learning Mandarin and I watch these videos just trying to see how much more I’m progressing and I have probably rewatched Chris videos like 10 times but I actually recognized every character in that sentence except for the one that combines the radical 辶 and 不. I know they’re all overall pretty basic 字 but just to be able to recognize 90% of a sentence is a first for me. I know nobody will prob see this but just wanted to type this so If somebody does like it, I will remember this moment.
