I did this last year and got pretty decent results. This year I am growing some in a loose mix of woodchips and soil, some in plastic tubs, some in medium sized pots, and some in trenches. I had to diversify my methods because I am growing over 60 potato plants from seed for breeding.
If I was just growing them normally I would definitely still be using the cardboard box method.

I am right there with you this year. I splurged and bought a couple sacks of seed potatoes. I've got some in composted chicken manure, some in compost in grow bags, some in just leaves, and started a bunch at our farm this year. First time planting there in a long time. Can't wait to see which does best

@@brettsbackyard8222 I am growing most of mine from actual seeds so I am curious to see if it will turn out well for me at all. I do have some seed potatoes to fall back on though.

I did a video yesterday about potato flowers and seeds that I guess I accidentally deleted. I have never used actual seeds, but from what I've read, they may or may not grow true to the variety you harvested from. They could take 2-3 years also to reach an edible size. A lot of the potato breeders use them to develop new kinds. You may come up with something completely new.

@@brettsbackyard8222 I am making a hybrid between S. ajanhuiri and a cultivar with better disease resistance and yield.
So this would be an interspecific hybrid. S. ajanhuiri has remarkable frost hardiness, down to the low 20s. It is a cultivated variety and as such is perfectly edible with appropriate levels of glycoalkaloids.
I also have two other varieties I am hybridizing and one of those is one that gives great flower and seed production.
The ultimate goal is to then hybridize the hybrids and select for offspring that display the best traits of all 4 parents. Will probably be a years long endeavor, but I think it is worth it to have a super frost resistant, high yielding, disease resistant new cultivar.

Wow! You are really getting into it. I would love to see the end results of this research. McDonald's spent a lot of effort to produce a potato specific to their fries. You could end up having the next potato phenomenon.

@@brettsbackyard8222 I didn’t plant all the potatoes at same time. I have harvested 6 of the 5 gal containers…Yukon gold. Weighed in at 5 lbs.
I have 5 more in 5gal containers, a 10 gal grow bag and two boxes. One of the boxes the plants are dying back so maybe in two weeks.
I discovered a bag of store bought Idaho potatoes in the kitchen yesterday with 3 that have chitted. I’ll be planting them this weekend. I’ll do 2 each in containers, grow bags and boxes.
I’ve inspired a friend to grow her own potatoes as she watched my ‘great’ reveal. She was so fascinated with the idea that she has 3 co-workers planning on doing the same this weekend. 😊

“Potato update! - we started an official potato challenge today on my team at work. There are now 26 people growing a bucket or more of potatoes 🤣”
      What a ripple effect! 😂

I did not do a video on that last year. I got a few, but by the time these plants were going, the drought had set in and my tomatoes were so large, it was hard to get in there. I have made some more planting videos already this spring and will be doing harvest videos as the season progresses.

I did not put holes in the box. With it sitting on the soil, and the roots growing down, the bottom deteriorats pretty easily.

The sides have held up nicely so far. I have potatoes in 2 square boxes, bell peppers in a 3ft long rectangle box, pole beans in another rectangle and I’m trying purple beans in my last rectangle box. There’s no moving them as they all have ‘soggy bottoms’ 😆
      So plan ahead.

You are right. One tatter could do just fine in this box. I may go with 2 in this spacing in an open area. This was a bit later in the season and I was just trying to squeeze some extras in anywhere I could

Boxes are put together with chemicals that will leach off into the soil and into your harvest. I recommend non-treated wood brother.

The research I have been reading suggest staying away from glossy covered or paper with lots of ink. I usually avoid these because they take longer to break down. Dioxin is one thing people worry about. These same levels have been found in our coffee filters. The glue in most boxes is made of a starch. The main reason I started using boxes on occasion was a study I read about the trace heavy metals found in the paper. It was showing rollie pollies and other bugs ingest these heavy metals and form them into larger particles that the plants do not take up through the roots. These are some of the reasons I am more concerned with the actual soil we use.

It's not like he made the boxes with treated wood...
      It's just a cardboard box.
Alot of people put cardboard in their compost heaps and use it to layer in high raised beds too...

@@salemdesigns65 yeah, i used to work for Georgia-Pacific, who makes boxes and other paper goods. If you think they're not using chemicals in that paper you are ill informed. Unless you go hemp boxes or in that direction, perhaps with this starch glue on boxes, like the gentleman said he knows of, than it has chemicals. I wouldnt want to feed anyone even the smallest amount of leached chemicals in my food, but thats just me. To each their own.
