Nothing is better than a potato just harvested. I won't even eat grocery store potatoes anymore. The difference is amazing. I only buy them from the store to plant. What amazes me most is what they produce. A totally different flavorful sweet moist delicious potato that I use way less butter on. I encourage everyone to grow potatoes. You'll never regret it.

I suspect this is because of better soil. I like to make fresh compost to use for potatoes the following year. I'm about to plant red and purple potatoes.
You're right the grocery store potatoes are awful, even the organic ones. None of them have any flavor whatsoever.
This was a sign for me. All i think about is having a bunch of potatoes.
@@Soul_Contract You can grow them in the ground or in pots, even in 5 gallon buckets. I harvest more from my planter pots than the ground which I attribute to better soil in the pots. Between seasons I add banana peels to the soil for the potassium which potatoes use a lot of to grow. The banana peels break down quickly and nourish the soil.
I used to think that growing potatoes was a waste of time and money compared to just buying them. The first year I planted a few for fun and was amazed by the yield compared to the cost of planting. Plus, storing for the winter is awesome!

@@Seashell832 Yes, you can use a number of things, but the box here is free.
If I can suggest, I place a trimmed galvanized metal screen under the box. In the south we have problems with moles/voles that will eat your potato plant root balls. This doesn’t bother the plants roots, but will keep those lil buggers out.

I followed Mark’s instructions for planting potatoes in boxes a few years ago and it was great. Quick and easy at planting and at harvest. The boxes held up fine for one growing season. I did a different experiment last year and this year I’ve returned to the cardboard boxes again

I use this method, too. One of the bonus features is that you need no tools to harvest - so you don't accidentally hits the taters with a fork or shovel, damaging them for storage. Flip the container over (or tear the cardboard off) and there the spuds are!

@@I.Am.Nobody They don't if the box isn't to big . The large boxes need a stake or two on the outsides. I did boxes the size he showed also a large box my lawn mower came in and it needed staked on the sides, I planted 8 potatoes in it. 😄 I used sugar cane straw in my boxes. It's so easy to harvest the potatoes, as I harvest I put the used sugar cane mulch from on top of the potatoes around my fruit trees and shrubs so no waste.😀 I'll be doing the same this next season as well.
I found the benefit of planting my garden under my bird feeders, I have several. Not only does my garden do well, so do the birds. They keep the pests off my plants ❤️🇺🇸

I used the cloth bags you can buy at the grocery stores for a dollar or two. Much cheaper than grow bags. I will use cardboard this year. Once I had a broken down plastic laundry basket. I lined it with cardboard. Not a problem.
I go to appliance stores that take back old refrigerators when they deliver the new ones.There going to the scrap dealer and they dont want the hard plastic containers so I get all I can handle also the glass shelves that are tempered I make cold frames .

The Pandemic gave me a collection of boxes. I wanted to plant potatoes in the front corner of my yard because my backyard is full, but the homeless people love to steal everything not nailed down. When I saw this video I realized it was a great idea because no one would want a cardboard box full if dirt with a weed looking plant growing in it...I'm hoping.
I'm going to try just one box to see how long it will survive. And no...I don't have a front yard fence. Yes, I live in a high variety of foot traffic because I'm on a corner lot across from the city's main downtown park. This is only a test, but if it works I hope to start planting cherry tomatoes in a box for the school kids to pick. PLUS, I have the school bus stop on the side of my house which runs twice a day. Wish me luck everyone because I'm a granny who loves to grow vegetables to share.
Then why try to hide them from the homeless if you "love to share"? They are the most in need.

Doesn't matter if they're homeless or just greedy strangers with sticky fingers. They take "everything that isn't nailed down."
Unless she's living in a city like Orlando (where they make living homeless impossible because Disney) there are plenty of places for the unhoused to go for food. I've volunteered at the local food pantry. Nobody should be swiping whole boxes of potatoes or anything else.

I just bought my first house in the burbs after living in high density inner city apartments for 20 years. What's the update
I have grown tomato plants in cardboard boxes. I took some rope and wrapped it around the box two or three times to keep it sturdy since tomato plants need to be watered often, and it worked very well. Now, I will try potatoes. Thank you for this video and info!

I LOVE this idea! I think it would be cool with my ocd brain to have uniform boxes lined up growing things! At end of the season it all goes in the ground and my no dig beds are ready to go for next year! How cool, going to try this on more than just potatoes! Thank you! :)

Best seem for me also. The street sweeper to away all the leaves two hours ago. All not lost I didn't set my blue trash tub out for pickup I have plenty stored in there and a few card board boxes also.
Thanks for this video. I use the cardboard containers too! This video has excellent instructions, and easy to follow with the why as well as the how! I started growing my own potatoes completely by accident after throwing a sprouting pantry spud into a flower planter. A couple months later, I was watering and noticed a big beautiful potato. I cooked it up, I was AMAZED how different and wonderful this fresh potato tasted! I've been growing my own ever since.

Mark, great job and the only thing I would add is that I've been in a victory garden in DC for 25 years and nobody has ever used any kind of netting against potato beatles and nobody has ever encountered them. If I was a first-time potato gardener, I would try it without the netting and only use netting if it became a problem in your area.

Great way to easily start a garden bed. I line up two rows of boxes. Put in soil and plants. Then put a garden edging around the boxes eg bricks or cement pieces. To suppress weeds I leave the bottom shut (taking off the tape) if I need too.

Sorry, I do not do this with sweet potatoes since they grow much larger
Sweet potatoes are more sensitive than potatoes to the cold. Somewhat similar to tomatoes. Sweet potatoes grow from chits. So sweet potatoes are different. You can eat the tops like spinach and the roots grow sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are different than potatoes.

What a great idea! Cardboard box to plant in. Wonder how other plants will do. When we were teens my friend & I planted peeings with eyes. Waited the season dug up the ground and we got loads of potatoes. Small ones but good tasting.

Great info Mark, 👍 we have planted 3 methods of them. The tub method made around 20 lbs. We have Rurh Stout planted, and raised bed tradional hilled. Will see which one does best.

A similar method I've used for fun (especially useful if you only have a balcony or no yard): A 5-Gal pail! Throw a few inches of leaves/compost/whatever in the bottom, stab in your 'tater chunks, and as they grow just keep throwing soil/sand/leaves/compost on top. At the end of the season, you can just dump the pail and boom!

@@SimpleCleanAndGreen in my case, I live in a dry climate, so it wasn't a concern and worked out fine. However you may be on to something for most other folks trying that trick.

Thanks so.kuch for this video. I've tried potatoes in clay pots, plastic bins and the ground. The best after the ground. I will definitely use this method next year! I'm begging to have some physical limitations so the box will help keep them contained, easy to cover and easy to harvest. Great practical be suggestion😃

I have always cut in more then one piece, and I don't wait to dry key is amazing soil,never had a problem, and rotate potatoes each side of garden every year to slow down potato bugs..happy planting

I watched a YT video called the Ruth Stout method. It’s growing potatoes under a bed of straw! Many Gardner’s are using that method also. I also have heavy clay and rock. I’ve grown potatoes in 20 gallon plastic water buckets and old plastic totes! Lol

Much of my zone 9 soil was clay. The rest was hard as cement. About 7 years ago, I started composting directly into the soil. The holes were shallow at first, but I kept at it. Once I could feel that the soil was was healthier, I dug another hole nearby and started putting my compost in that hole. I kept at it and now a big portion of the soil is healthy. However, in the 2nd year of composting, A plant sprung up in the first hole I started. I thought it was a weed, but it turned out that I had a bunch of Potatoes ( from the compost!). They were delicious!
Tulle is a net fabric. Inexpensive. You can buy it from a fabric store. Thank you for sharing. This was very helpful.

Interesting cheap and easy way to grow them, thnx for sharing. I have a few wooden fruit crates i want to grow potatoes in next year. Ill expertiment this box methode and 30L container. To compare the 3 d.v.
The size of the potato piece is absolutely irrelevant.
We pull off the long sprouts from storage and plant those directly with no potato attached... and then chit the potatoes to cut and plant the traditional way.
The planted raw sprouts do just fine with no yield/vigor/health difference from the second, still on the tuber succession.
My Grandad used to tell me about how his dad would just cut the sprout off with no noticeable potato attached, plant the sprouts and turn the remaining spuds into potato soup for dinner for the family that whole week.

Thank you. It's my understanding the sprout needs nourishment from the potato only until it's able to generate its own from roots in the soil and photosynthesis from the leaves. I had a lot of marble-sized leftover ones from last year and they all chitted so I planted them in cell trays and they're a foot tall and looking great. I've also planted a few chits that broke off and while they are not as big, they look good.
Were your chits planted close to the surface? Since mine were small ~1" I put them just below the surface, the same with the marble-sized potatoes so they wouldn't have far to go to get light.

I have done this with slimy potatoes from the dumpster.
I mostly use them to create soil and clear areas of weeds.

We accidentally left a seed potato or two in a box of wood chips that we were storing them in. Threw it under a tree and never tended it when we noticed the leaves come up.
We just shrugged and left it alone didn't even water it.
... It grew and out-produced the potatoes in the garden! and the harvesting couldn't have been easier, just picked it up and shook it off. We were amazed.

Remember to plant the potatoes right after the full moon. They have a tendency to come up out of the soil if done when full moon is coming on

@@iamorganicgardening I made that mistake often. Sometimes they'd do fine and others I'd have to go back and push in ground. Then an old timer told me my mistake. And I live in potato planting country

I have some wire & plastic milk crates I could line with a cardboard box, I'm thinking this could help with keeping the boxes shape. I know that is not the exact size mentioned, but close. would this be big enough? Also do I just keeping adding leaves or anything else as the potatoes grow? Excited to try this method thank you for this video 🥔 🌱
That would work great. You only have to add 8 inchs above the planted potatoes to get a crop. Thanks
