Loved this collab 😍 I'll definitely be using cardboard box beds again, I do think the frost plus difficult start to the growing season effected our final harvests but at least we got something. I will choose a better site next time too as mine was tucked away almost under the hedge! 😊🥔🌱
Hi Roo! Thanks for the collab, such a good idea! 😊
Now I feel better about the tiny spuds from my plant container.
Thanks!
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
May I offer a suggestion for the future. Try growing potatoes in thick black refuse bags with holes poked in the bottom for drainage. The black retains a lot more heat and can prevent any late frost damage. Starting with about 2 inches of compost, plant the seed potatoes and then add compost/mulch as the plants grow. We used leaf mold, compost, and forest humus from our woods. The result was quite pleasing. From 6 bags, we harvested about 45 potatoes, and most of them were 5-6 inches long. We fed our potatoes worm tea for the first 6 or 7 weeks. Good luck and happy gardening this year.
Great idea.
That's the lovely thing about potatoes. One can throw together a pot, pile of clippings, etc and grow potatoes.
WRT buying compost and soil, I would like it if all gardeners would ask their local nurseries to offer it in bulk where you can get it in reusable containers.
My recommendation is builders merchants but look before you buy as some can be partly broken down
What a good idea 👍, with people shopping online there’s lots of cardboard, recycle, yes but repurpose too.
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
Awesome update Erica
Thank you Linda. 😃
it wasnt too bad well done erica
Cheers Steven.
This is finally a good result and the potatoes look fresh and bright
Thanks for watching.
From the six boxes, you get six meals though . For putting a potato in the ground I think that’s a great comeback x Mine took forever to grow and are still flowering . I’m waiting for them to stop flowering so I can finally harvest some .x
Great collaboration xxx
Hope you have a lush harvest.
Thanks! I will have to try your leek idea, too!
Great idea.
Beautiful
😊
What a great idea for starting a raised bed 🧠 💡 Thanks Erica 🥰
Thanks for watching.
Nice and good idea too 🥔🥔🥔
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
My father would grow potatoes in hay bales… at the end of the season he would just crack them open and grab the potatoes. 👍
Wow, such a great idea.
I have tried this after watching your video a few months ago. I am going to harvest my potatoes soon.
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
I did this last year, and I’m never growing potatoes a different way again. It’s so easy to harvest, and leaves a great bed behind.
I can't wait to try it again. 😉
Just watched the video on Liz Zorab's channel with you. Interesting way of growing potatoes 🥔 🥔🥔🥔🤗👍
Well this project was actually inspired by Liz when she did it in her last garden. 😊
Thank you for watching. 😊
Excellent video and harvest Erica despite the weather conditions we have had this year. It was a fantastic idea to do a collaboration with Roo's Life and I have already seen her video. Hopefully the main crop is better and we have better weather next year.
My main top hasn't even started growing this year... 🤣
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden Mine has!
I'd be really chuffed with those spuds 👍🏻
Thanks! 😃
Great idea and not a bad harvest really. Maybe one box inside another may help protect the crop during the rubbish weather....😊
That might work, thanks for watching.
My April planted potatoes in dumpy bags just rotted or didn’t root at all. The soil was so cold and claggy when I checked on them at end of June - I just dumped the soil out onto cardboard and covered it with hay… I got a small harvest at the end of August…
A small harvest is better than no harvest. 😊
Excellent an idea for next year.
Thanks for watching! Sorry for the late reply! 😊
Those beds look quite dry. It is hard to keep even moisture in grow bags and buckets, so maybe in boxes as well.
Manitoba Canada. Weather here so dry for months. Locusts hitting face while walking along the field. Smoke filling air each morning from the burning fires up north. Still ..hoping for some potatoes growing in the compost pile. I will def try the cardboard box thing next year....thanks for posting.
Oh no, it's been a challenging year for ole mother nature hasn't it? Fingers crossed next year is a little more stable for us. 😊
what an absolutely fabulous Idea. I have a bit of my garden that is a nightmare space, with a 10-foot drop on the other side. It is a terrace garden on a slope towards the house. I have kale and all sorts of seedlings growing, and this will be the best ever thing to do with it. Thanks ever so much both!
You've got to do it, just a easy idea! Thanks for watching! Sorry for the late reply! 😊
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden Oh that's ok, no worries. I've done it and I'm so pleased with it. I've removed most of the cardboard box edges now and topped up with compost. Lots of things are growing, plus a row of Senshu onions at the back. So pleased I saw your video.
This is a very cool idea and a great way to repurpose cardboard. 👍
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
What a lovely idea! Hi from Bristol UK.
Yay, Bristol is my hometown,
Potato harvests have not been great for lots of folks so you are right that the weather this Spring has played a part. Nice concept, well executed. Hopefully next year will be even better. All the best. Mags 🌺🌸🌼🌻
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
Hiya from Ontario Canada Thankyou for sharing like I commented on Roos channel the weather is crazy as well. Take care.🐝
Yes it certainly is crazy. Thanks for watching.
I held off planting my potatoes until mid April due to the cold weather so I am quite hopeful. I am growing in buckets. Have harvested one about a week ago and it was a decent crop. I'm giving the rest a couple of weeks extra to allow for a bigger size potato.
Nice idea about the cardboard boxes. Very thrifty.
Hopefully you're spuds will do OK then. 😊
Since Lockdown began I have been going to Lidl, picking up one of those Boxes and using them to shop with, I’ve put down loads in my Polytunnel and Garden, they are very handy.
That's how I collected these ones! 😊
Great update Erica and a very good experiment. i'm sure you've learned a lesson or two to take into the next attempt. No dig in cardboard boxes does have the benefit of retaining the soil. i may well try this technique for myself.
Do it! I'm going to do something for the garlic over winter for sure!
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden i will :~}
Great way to create quick contained beds, which can then transition into more permanent beds!
Yeah, I think this was so easy.
With our warming world it's prudent to consider shade cloth! 👍
Shade cloth or umbrella depending on what the weather decides to do that day! 🤣
Erica it was a great experiment, my potatoes so far have been small, the weather i think affected them at the start, it wasn't great here. You got a good few potatoes anyway.
Yeah, the weather certainly hasn't helped the growing season.
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden sire hasn't
We're in devon and have noticed the change in weather, especially the cloud cover we've had. Some are better then non and what a gr8 way to grow them. Cant wait to try it. Thanks Erica xxx
Hi Jody! Thanks for watching, you're right, it's been an odd year.
New subscriber here from Liz Zorab's channel, loving your content! 👍 🏴 😁
Hello! And thanks for joining!
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden You are very welcome, thank you for your great content and positive attitude, loving what I've seen of your channel so far. We're on a fairly newly acquired croft (small home farm in the Highlands of Scotland) where we've been learning to farm, grow and love life for the past 3 years. Channels like yours are an excellent source of both inspiration and moral support. Thank you for your honesty and awesome content, great work!
Hi Erica. My potatoes in Yorkshire are small too! X
It's been a funny old year.
Interesting experiment and I think a reasonable harvest considering our weather problems this year 👍
Thanks Janet! The weather has been weird for sure.
Can u turn around and use the tiny potatoes as seed potatoes?
It’s really good to try these different methods. It’s a great use for boxes ( a much undervalued resource in my opinion). I’m pretty sure the weird weather contributed to the size of your harvest, nonetheless they looked tasty! ❤️
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
Wow 😍😍
Thanks for watching.
Well done to you both, great idea👍
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
I'm very impressed by your potato harvest....despite you saying it didn't go so well!
Yay, thanks for being impressed! Definitely could have been better though.
Good effort Erica. Maybe deeper boxes next time?
I bet they taste great!!
Maybe, they do taste lovely. 😊
Hello gorgeous!!! Been away from YT watching for a while ...a new house and lots of time spent on that!! I tried to join your challenge and had no space in the garden!! Still loving the hell out of you as always!! I so love that you did this in cardboard boxes!! A great idea!! Cheers for the fantastic experiment!!! Sending much love, as always!! I'll be hit and miss on watching but will still see you on FB!! That is a lovely harvest of tender new baby potatoes!! So wonderful!! So sorry about the leeks!! Cheers darling!! Roo did grand, too, in my humble opinion!! 💖
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden I haven't been on YT for a little over a month, I've been that busy!! Not to worry, darling!!😘
I'm going to try this next year. What a great idea, thanks.
Good luck x
Look at there - must be at least 50 spuds. Looks good now.
Yep! Wish it was more though.
Interesting video. I think you'd have had a bigger harvest in a deeper container. A bit shallow for potatoes. Great for onions, tho!
I did something similar last year with carrot as I had a problem getting them started due to slugs and that everyone was telling me I couldn't transplant carrot, if I am told that I can't do something that's a challenge! I got a better harvest than feeding the slugs and got to start them in a green house! Need to put the boxes on a piece of plywood to carry them to the bed.
Well I never thought about moving the box so that's a brilliant idea! Thank you.
I often start my carrots in trays and transplant them into beds with great success 🥕 😊🌱x
Not been great in Wales this year Erica. I don't know how my spuds have done cause its been crazy cold then crazy hot weird weather. great video
Thanks Tony, my potatoes in buckets have hardly grown.
@@ericaslittlewelshgardensame here up north, the weather keeps getting crazier every year. I pulled mine early as the slugs started to pay attention, got about 8kg of new potatoes which is a win for me :) lovely sauteed with garlic and butter
I'm in Tregaron and mine in pots have been ok. But when I look at the complete harvest there really should be at least double the amount. I have got another 6 planted up. And some pink fir apple, so we'll see.
Aunty, you're prettier than Uncle Tony
Greetings from the Netherlands
Hello! Thanks for watching.
Love your accent!
Great effort!
I am reading that potatoes like nitrogen. My guess is to use generally light manure applications and there are organic resources for nitrogen.
They are also saying add a little Epsom Salt to the soil.
I am no expert so check around for a 2nd opinion from professionals.
Thank you for great videos!
Hello love this is my first time seeing your channel. I was impressed with your style and amount of information you share. Geoff Lawton is a world-renowned permaculture designer and teacher. He starts with cardboard on the ground then soil and compost and then planting there. So this idea from Liz Zoras follows along with this system. I love to see different people employing the same techniques. You keep at this you will be successful! I love your enthusiasm and excitement I am looking forward to seeing all your videos over time.
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
Did you water the boxes? Just checking! Thank you!
No I didn't, they will get damp as it rains or the compost is watered. Thanks for watching.
I’m going to plant in boxes next year🥳
Such a simple idea that worked really well (apart from the potatoes not wanting to grow!)
Hi I grew some plants than the potatoe plant was dying out and tgd potatoes seemed to come to the top or the soil ran out a little my husband picked them but they were too small is it normal for the potatoes to cone to top of soil?
Some potatoes grow up the stem so they would appear to come to the surface.
Lovely idea... I will def try... Where did u get 99p compost bags.. 🤔
Lidl sell 20ltrs for 99p peat free
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden I will look out for this.. Super deal...
Yeah definitely something i want to try when we move probably th quickest way I will have to get some beds in honestly :D Its a great idea.
Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply!
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden it’s all good hun don’t worry xox
Potatoes are very heavy feeders, if you don’t feed or plant in straight good compost they won’t produce much
Thanks for watching. 😊
Erica, use the tiny ones to make canary potatoes for bbq
Will have to check that recipe out, thanks.
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden dead easr, boil in very salty water they eat them in canary Isles, hence the name ,, great with Aioli, garlic sauce
hmm. I wonder if you had added some felerizer maybe twice in it's growing you'd have had a better result.
Maybe. 😊
It's been a crazy year for growing everything. I only put my spuds in for your potato challenge last month (July), is your challenge still going? At least you had a harvest and created a new no dig weed free bed so I would call that a win 😊
Weed free beds sounds lush! Yes it's still on but mine haven't grown much.
I'm also in Wales and this year has been a bad year for my potatoes, I've grown them in the same containers I use every year and this is the worst year yet. My first earlies were plentiful but tiny, my second earlies were a better size but fewer spuds, and my maincrop is not looking too healthy either with a lot of early dieback. I do love the cardboard box idea though I will def give it a try next year and just hope we get better growing conditions.
It worked really well at holding together long enough to get a harvest. I am going to do this in my polytunnel with homemade compost, an easy to keep a small amount of compost in the one place.
What varieties were these , Erica?
These were Rocket first earlies.
Thank you, Erica, in the circumstances that was a reasonable crop. On my Hertfordshire allotment this year I am growing second early and maincrop potatoes in twelve thirty litre tubs and also experimenting with a couple of rows in a woodchip mulch and two more rows in a mulch of grass cuttings. I have grown potatoes in 30 litre tubs for several years and I know that this works well for me but I have yet to dig any of the other two trials and I am looking forward to seeing what results I get.
Are you near Treorchy?
I'm about 50 miles away, I'm near Swansea.
I have grown veggies in the box unfortunately the next day all finished destroy by a stray cat sleeping in the box and the baby veggies become messy and I have to clear and regrown new on and I covered with plank to avoid the cat sleeping inside my veggies
Cats are a menace in the garden! 😂
