  • Whitehorse Gun Show, picked up two carbines to try, a 375 Winchester Big Bore 94, a moderate little customer and a Browning BLR in the unsung 358 Winchester. I think I will like these little fellows. The 358 BLR offers more ballistically but the 375 is very handy!

    I like my modern sporting rifles but there is a special place in my heart for lever guns. Each has a role to play.

    Just sighted in my new Stainless BLR in 358 Win. Shot 1.25” with Hornady ammo in windy conditions. Pretty happy with it. Put a slip-on Limbsaver on it and wow, it’s like shooting a .243.

    Bought a Winchester big bore 94 in 375 win. For my first deer rifle back in 1982 then I bought the Browning blr in 358 win. Two year's later. Got to love them big bores!!! The 356 win. Was a good one too that never caught on.

      Any advice for loading the 358 BLR?

      I always use IMR 3031 in my Browning. The go to load for deer I use is the Speer 180 FN. And 51 gr. Of 3031 and the 250 gr. Speer with 42 gr. Of 3031. Both with CCI 200 primer's. Both loads are extremely accurate in my BLR and in a Ruger 77.

      Actually 35 and 37 caliber bullets are medium bore, 40 caliber and up is big bore, don't know why Winchester called their stronger actioned 94's big bore's guess its a marketing thing.

    My 358 Browning lever likes Varget behind a 225 Sierra. Chrony says 2425fps.

      My BLR shoots like crap. Vertical strings getting over 2400ft/sec with H4895 and BLC2 into 3-4" vertical groups at 100 yards. Definately not a load issue...I am playing with the bedding. Stay tuned.

    been doing a lot of work with the Winchester 94 in .356 win, Hornady makes a lovely bullet 200 grain ftx and I am getting great groups at 100 and 200 yards.I have had a 375 for years and love it, my go to brush moose gun, great results with a 250 grain powder coated pure lead projectile.

      One day, hopefully far down the road still, I’ll inherit my dads old marlin 336 in .30-30. I like my .243, 270, .300

    I have my grandfathers Win 94 in 30WCF (3030) 1941 with a side mount scope. I think your 307 is the modern evolution of that rifle. I believe the downfall of the 307 is that model hunters wanted a clip and so went for the BLR 308. If I were doing a lot of canoe moose hunting that would be the rifle I would want . I love calling moose from a canoe , the government set the season so we can't hunt in the rut here.
    Your a shooter and reloaded but I see you know the difference between the rifles shooters buy and those hunters buy . Introduction with free hand shooting tells it all for many times there is just no time for gun rest.

    Ha lever actions, I love them, but I unfortunately don't have any of them left, other than a winchester 94 built in 1896ish in 38-55 that was my grand father... I would love to get a good hitting LA for moose, would have to be a winchester or a browning cause I don't like the marlins much, just the feel in hand is different!

    Barnes list’s a 255gr bullet for the Winchester .375 number 30496, it is a different bullet than the 38-55 bullet, also Hawk bullets has a good selection of bullets for the .375 win . I have 3 m94 big bore .375 one standard top eject and one I just got which is the angle eject. Like your channel a kindred spirit

    • @north61

      Yup, I have since bought 150 of the Barnes 375 bullets. They work pretty well, but start off pretty slow so don't expand so well at longer ranges.

    Have you played with Ramshot TAC in the 358 Win? John Barsness wrote an article back in 2008 praising the TAC powder.

      Nope..not available locally. H-4895 is working pretty good.

      I have with the 180gr Barnes ttsx, but with barness load data it locks up the bolt in the blr, with a bolt action rifle the camming leverage is better than the rack and pinion mechanics of the blr.I had to back down 1-1/2 grains but still an awesome load!

  • @gerry6.8

    No offence to Savage but those are so much nicer than a 338 Lapua. I have an older BLR made in 1982 that I really love to shoot, very handy and the 358 Win is a powerful little round. Mine likes most flat base 200's with IMR 3031 and the excellent 180 gr Speer with H 4895. The bear load is the 225 gr Woodleigh RN with IMR 8208, shoots well too. Had high hopes for boat tail bullets like the 200 gr Accubond and 225 gr Sierra but the gun only shot average with them, maybe your will do better with those. That 375 Win is a beauty, would love to find one like that.

    • @north61
      @north61  5 років тому +1

      I think I'll add a scope for load development. My vertical indexing with the round bead and peep is not the best in anything but bright light. 59 year old eyes syndrome.

    • @north61
      @north61  5 років тому +1

      The 338 Lapua is a magnificent long range round..but that Savage was like shooting a fence post!

    What height and what kind is your front sight on the BLR to make it compatible with the Skinner peep sight. My understanding is that the stock front bead on the BLR is too low for a Skinner sight. The Skinner web sight is a bit foggy on this. Thanks for all the interesting videos! I have a 358 BLR and was considering a Skinner sight for it.

    • @north61
      @north61  Рік тому +2

      Sorry mate I sold the rifle and never shot it with the skinner sights. I kept the sight as someday I'd love to go for a Browning 450 Marlin at 50,000PSI.

    Great channel, do you recommend the 358 Winchester for moose here in Ontario?

    • @north61
      @north61  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks....I am a big fan of the 358 as long as your ranges are not too long. 200+ yards you start losing a bit of speed for expansion and sure killing power on moose. I'd put 225 as your limit and every single moose we have eaten has been taken within that limit. If you hunt moose were long shots are the norm, something faster would be better. For the 90% of us who get moose at close to moderate ranges the 358 is a gem. Great combination of decent power, moderate recoil and excellent penetration.

      @@north61 Thanks for the advise, thinking of getting into the world of reloading as factory ammo is scarce for this rifle, all I can get is Hornady 200 grain interlock here!! Take care up there in the Great White North!!

    ive shot a couple blr's 243,308 with the pistol grip stocks I prefer straight stock levers but they had a reel nice fit an finish to them and shoot fine but the actions remind of the savage 99's witch ive owned I like the blr better but I have a win model 88 in 308 that I like the feel an action better than the blr , my question is witch rifle do you like better the blr 358 or the win 375 if you could only have one and why ?

    • @north61
      @north61  5 років тому +2

      Good question. Went back to the range this afternoon and the 358 shoots 225 grain bullets at 2444 Ft/sec with H4895! That's a pretty powerful load and good to 300 yards. The 375 is not nearly as potent. The BLR can get knocked out of action pretty easily as the meshed gears do not like dirt or a bit of crud or ill treatment. The Win 94 just keeps rolling no matter what you do to it. As a dedicated hunting gun the BLR is more capable but, as a canoe knock about or trapping companion rifle the 94, wins hands down. I'd probably keep the 94.

      @@north61I would pick the 94 to for the same reason there both pretty guns but the 94 in my opinion are in a different class , id like a big bore lever marlin / Winchester one day
