The 358 Winchester is a phenomenal cartridge! A good friend of mine has a custom Remington 760 in 358 Win, a pump rifle in that caliber is just so slick!

I have a BLR in 358 and I really like it. With 225 grain Nosler partitions it’s a 300 yard max load. I live in British Columbia where we have numerous black bears as well as grizzlys and the extra thump that the 358 has is comforting if you run into a bruin while out hunting deer. Our genius government has outlawed grizzly hunting for the past few years and they have been getting more numerous as well. I have never had to shoot a bear in self defence but if I have to, I know the 358 will be up to the task. The 358 is also a fine caliber for black bear hunting.

Do you mean that cartridge needs are not 100% about energy???
Holy smokes. I would certainly want a larger diameter bullet for larger sharp toothed game. Good choice for your needs.

Looks like Browning is now dropping the .358 Winchester from the cartridges available for the BLR - the Browning Lever-action Rifle. Glad I got mine when I did. The .358 is now listed as "no longer in production" for each model BLR in the new online catalog.

Heavy bullets retain energy after striking an animal and slow down. The percentage of energy is higher with the big bullet mass. With a lighter faster bullet the energy rapidly declines as it enters the animal and slows down.

But in the swamps and woods its does a heck of a job on hogs and deer. You get a good blood trail.
And it can keep your game from making it to water.

I’m not so sure it should be used past 200-250 yards to be called a brush gun. That’s a very long shot through trees or any kind of brush. It’s a great bear and moose, some cases elk round. Some hunters want bigger holes in and out , bone breaking if possible. The 358 is over kill for a White tail but, like I always say, to each their own. That’s what great about our hunting, choices, choices, choices.👍🇺🇸✌🏻🙏🏽👏

I've accumulated a bunch of .358 Win. brass and bullets. 150 cases, much of it new never loaded brass. Had it in a local pawn shop on confinement for over two months and was told that no one ever even looked at it. Apparently, there must not be much interest in it in my area in Southeast Kansas. Being an avid reloader I can't make myself just up and throw it away, surely someday someone will buy it or trade for something I can use. I myself went with the model 88 Winchester in .308 in I think 1971 and killed many deer with it and probably a boxcar load of coyotes and other varmints. I still have it and it still shoots as good as the day I bought it.

This drives me crazy. People with understanding of terminal ballistics understand that bullet diameter and weight have a quality undefined by the numbers. Energy and bullet drop are not the measure of a cartridge unless you are in open country. Most people are not. Dropping tough game requires heavy bullets with larger diameters. Notice how cartridge requirements for larger animals have nothing to do with energy. The game managers refer to bullet diameter. Then the .358 didn’t do well. What does that mean. Actual experts like Elmer Keith don’t drive the market. Of course it’s not an open country rifle cartridge. Hunting bears from a stand though is different. Hunting bears and bores in heavy cover like the Pacific Northwest west it makes sense.
measuring cartridges by energy make’s really ignorant people think that there is little use for it. Hunter needs change with game, terrain and conditions. I know people walking around in Wyoming with a 35 Remington because their buddy in Minnesota said it was perfect for Whitetail. It’s great in PA. Not in Wyoming. I know people using a .270 from a tree stand in Missouri where the farthest shot doesn’t exceed 100 yards. People see your videos and it’s likely important to mention applicability. I’m sure you understand it but it’s important for people new to the sport or veteran hunters who have only hunted Whitetail from tree stands in Texas. This is a terrific cartridge for its intended purpose and it’s a real shame it’s basically dead. It serves a purpose. Not ranting much. Excellent well edited video that I could not make.

It’s because it’s the lack of projectiles made for the caliber. I own a few 35 Remington’s in a Whelen. I handload and can tell you there is not a lot of projectile options out there for either of them and it seems everything in .358 projectiles are limited runs. I started casting hollow points for him a few years back. The whelen won’t feed them but both 35 Rems do.

Great video! Shame it got off on you. Had me a bit confused as to the model until you said it was a 1967 99F. Apparently somebody restocked it, because the stock is from an early 1980's 99C (which was never chambered in 358). Guessing somebody might have sent it back to Savage, and they replaced it? Savage, good eye! you were the one person I was worried about catching that. HaHa! Before I made the video I was wondering if I should explain the stock but I didn't figure most people would notice anyway. Long story short, I put that stock on. I ended up with a C in 308 that was basically a parts gun but the stock was in great shape. The 358's original stock had a big chip out of it behind the tang (kept the original) and it always bothered me, hated looking at it. Anyway, one day I decided to put the buttstock from the C on it and it fit really good. So I put the forend on and had to make some minor adjustments but got it to fit. I know it's not correct but I think it looks pretty good. I'll never get rid of it anyway, or at least I can say I haven't got rid of a 99 yet. haha! Thanks for keeping me Honest. Have a good one!

Pretty much all the 35 caliber rifles are hunting cartridges and good ones at that. Of course its not as flat or long range as the 30 cals just like the 30 cal isnt as flat as .277 cal. What is the maximum size a 308 bullet can expand to? Thats a good question for a hunter. While I suppose you 'could' use a 308 on a large Alaskan Brown bear I wouldnt want to. The 35s got you easily covered - even the 35 Remington started out being advertised a gun for the largest dangerous game - and at its intended best range - 50-75 yds - it delivered the goods. The paper charts do not show that - yet its already been past recorded history. Buffalo Bore 35 Remington ammo is a 220gr bullet at 2200fps which 'is' 358 Winchester territory. The 358 Winchester has more case capacity, so of course the 358 Winchester handloaded (as it was likely intended) takes that niche to an even higher level. Realize the best tool for the job at hand is often a specialized one. If you've ever spent any time in the 'Cascade jungles' of the PNW you might understand the benefit of the 35s when you often never get a view of more than 30-40 yds and 50-60yd straight view being rare. I think its a fallacy to only compare 'factory charts' to draw your conclusions.

Raised cheek piece (not roll over) highly figured walnut but no checkering. I know the stock on it is aftermarket but it's too stunning in fit and finish to ever change for my purposes. But the thing weighs 8.5 pounds. I've heard the Featherlight was supposed to be one pound lighter but I assume my custom stock is to blame for the extra weight.

Of course, I could also be talked into "E" models in .300 and .303 Savage if I happened to stumble up on them. But I must ask, as regards to the .358 Winchester, what does it do better in close cover than my all-time favorite deer and hog thumper the .35 Remington and it's 200grn JSP from Remington? And then there is the excellent, but all too often ignored, .444 Marlin and it's 265grn JSP. By the way, I do know of two men who dropped moose with their .358 99F Savages with one shot each, but that was at least twenty years ago in Canada so I must give the round and the rifle their due respect.

Thanks for the comment Friday but I have to admit, I'm a bit confused on how to answer it. I believe you are correct, the 300 Savage probably has taken everything in North America but many cartridges can say the same. You are also correct that a huge caliber doesn't make up for a poor shot. The part I'm confused about is, in the video I stated that given the choice, I would pick the 300 Savage or 308 before the 358 and that I'm not really a fan of it. Not that I consider the 358 a huge cartridge but would choose the 35 Whelan as far as bang for your buck. As far as my abilities go, I began hunting as a child with the 250-3000 and killed quite a few deer and elk with that. I then moved up to a 308 Win as a young adult and was very successful with that. A few years ago I switched to the 7mm-08 and have been succesful with that. None of which are HUGE calibers but are very well suited for Colorado. If I ever went to Alaska for instance, I would probably want something more like a 338 or 300 Win Mag.

@@leverbolt7699 I didn't mean you specifically. Forgive me for any misunderstanding. A single shot rifle with an adequate caliber is probably the best combo. Work with it until the two are as good as they can be. If you know you're not carrying a bazooka, and you only have one shot you'll hunt better and take and make only a killing shot. Machine gunning large shells down range is not a solution. A heart shot with a .22 is better than a foot shot with a .470 Nitro Express. Over gunned also seems to lend itself to, besides overconfidence, to flinching and poor shots. My point is- too much emphasis on some magical caliber and shooting rig, less on field craft and proficiency with that one rifle, seems to be the pill many office jockeys and SEAL Team number 6 wannabes are swallowing.

@@finallyfriday. Friday, my apologies as well! Sometimes text comes out differently than intended in person. HaHa! I could not agree with you more, literally every part of your last comment is exactly how I would say it. For example, I work with a Seal Team 6 wannabe, we argue about our choice in rifles a lot. He told me once, (although I don't really believe his story) he took a muledeer with a 338 Lapua at 100 yards and had minimal meat damage. I asked him why in the world he would ever use that cartridge to hunt anything inside of a mile? His reply was, that's what he "trained" with. Another discussion we had was how he felt he could be just as accurate with his 300 Blackout with an 18'' barrel at 400 yards as me with my 300 Savage w/ a 24'' barrel! His rational was the AR platform is just superior to an old Lever action. Another argument was, I told him I could shoot faster, ACCURATELY with my Model 9422 than he could with his AR of a chosen caliber (I admittedly said this just to get under his skin) but I am confident I could do this. My point is, I think he truly believes the 338 Lapua is a good all around hunting cartridge, based off it's success as a sniper round. Also, the AR platform is superior to lever actions in every application due to the lever actions "old" technology. His thinking is based purely in new modern tech or "platforms" or "military" cartridges. I'm not sure he relies on his own abilities at all. I believe this because with all the arguments we have and challenges we make, he has yet to actually meet with me at the range to see how well his AR's stack up against my old lever guns! Anyway, I'm glad we could get that straightened out! Have a good one!

The 308 is nowhere as powerful as358 win. It works the same as 35 wh. and 30 06. 358 will kill game I would not hunt with 308. If 20 to 45gr. More bullet does not matter or the much larger frontal Dia. At almost identical ballistics to 300yrds. I believe a 210 or 225 gr.bul. for 338 dia.bul. these are hunting guns not 1000 yrd. Match bullets.

@@tomlarue654 Hey Tom! Man that's a tough one. I do have a few friends that get landowner tags but they are all usually spoken for by the previous year. If I remember right, they are getting around 1500 for a bull, cow tags are quite a bit less. In both of these situations, they have pretty much the same people returning each year but they sometimes have leftovers. There are also a few other outfits that I know of (don't know personally) that take paid hunters. I'm not saying it's impossible, just difficult. There is quite a lot of public land in the surrounding area as well, depending on the unit. We might be able to get something figured out if you can plan a year or two out.

Energy is overrated in killing game
The 358 win has a much larger mushroom and bearing surface than a 308 ..don't believe me try slapping your face with 2 fingers then slap your face with an open palm
The 358 is an awesome cartridge out to 250 yds .the whelen is only 150- 200 fps faster
