Playing One by U2 is WAY More Fun Than I Thought!

- I always suspected that the open chords weren't the correct answer when it comes to The Edge's guitar noodles in U2's One. Now that I know the answer, I like his guitar work even more.

I bet there are 5 videos teaching this song on UA-cam and this one is already the best one. Nice job Ryan. 👍🏼
kindness
Yea he always adds the doodly bits and dosent spend half the video repeating how to finger basic chords.
The perfect teaching video to play the song a bit closer to the record than I previously could, thank you!
You're very welcome!
Two u2 videos recently? Wow. About time
yeah i don't know what happened.
I don’t know why I clicked on this but glad I did. Been playing this song one & off for years.👍
:)
Great video man 🤘🏼💙
I'm learning this for a party band I joined recently and this is the best breakdown of the guitar parts I've seen 🙏🏼 Thanks so much!
Loved how you explained it in such a simple yet fun way!
Glad you liked it!
Dude, I love how you unearth songs that I would never think to play but then immediately realize, "I need to play this NOW!"
One of my all time faves, Ryan. Been rocking those open chords for years but looking forward to trying this approach over the weekend. Sounds great.
have fun brad :)
There’s more going on in that chorus too, the bass note walks down from the C to the Am with the hammer ons and pull offs on the B string there as well. Then once you get into verse 2&3 the guitars are layered up massively with lovely little note bend riff and the chords get more percussive. It’s actually a very interesting song to play from start to finish once you delve into it.
This was "one" of the first songs I learned on guitar but was a dumbed down version. This lesson has me wanting to re learn it in a lot cooler way. I love the pick guard on your strat!
thanks! custom made for me by a student of mine some years ago. really adds to the banana motif.
First time caller. Those were the best voicings I've seen. They sound accurate. I used to play/sing this in a band and I worked out the outro guitar part w/ echo. Super cool triads and I think it is behind the beat which is a little more tricky. Edge is truly a musical scientist. That's what Bono calls him.
thank you sir
The hammer-on guitar part was originated by producer Daniel Lanois. Per Wikipedia: "While working with Lanois in the studio on a vocal overdub, Bono suggested Lanois "play a little guitar part to try and juice [him] up". Lanois subsequently took Bono's green Gretsch guitar and played a hammer-on part that was included in the final version of the song."
nice
Hey Ryan! Didn't know you had a UA-cam channel! I remember your studio in Lafayette! You're a really good teacher!
ten nine eight seven six five four three two one blast off rocket ship! greetings Mark :)!!
What a great version of a beautiful song so cool
thanks!
As always, funny and great lesson!
Thanks! 😃
OK, now this is nuts. I've got "One" going on as an earworm, right? I pop open YT's main page, because I don't wanna work, but!!! Here's your vid, top row, right in the middle!!! You sir, have slaked my thirst for "One!" Time to break out my black Strat...
black strats matter :)
nice, thanks for the video lesson!
I'm loving the U2 recently. Stay (far away, so close) live from the elevation tour is fun. Would love to learn the acoustic sessions Cedarwood Road
thanks for the idea m'dude
Excellent! 2 U2 tunes in a week! Very cool video!!
ruthie was not pleased with this choice, citing i'd just done U2. but it was the thing that was on my mind so it had to be done. and she'd already cut my hair the night before so she had nothing on me.
Another great lesson.Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Have you seen Chris Cornell playing U2's One while singing the lyrics to Metallica's One?
Just another example of his brilliance.
i have even made a video on it
Thanks Ryan, that was really useful 👍
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for a great video - It made me smile 🙂
cheers Geir :)
I play that riff using A, D and G strings only, climbing to higher frets all the time. Start from the seventh fret, drop to a fifth fret on a second chord, climb to seventh on a third and then climb to a ninth fret on the fourth chord. Sounds good.
Well done. Much appreciated.
Glad it helped
Amazing simple song chords !
ja!
I believe I read an article years ago that said daniel Lanois basically wrote and played these guitar parts in the album.
which kinda makes sense. if tone is in the fingers, this part never felt like the edges fingers. it always stood out to me as a wierd pary
neat info
I appreciate your primary color game, bro.
best comment of the decade :)
Nice
The Edge was always one of my Favs when it comes to Rhytm playing , Hiss Complex Delay sound is so Awesome
yeah!
I think this may actually be Daniel Lanois' line originally
"Even one of those songs, where Bono holds a guitar" 😂
Saw U2 in concert 3 times in 5 days (quite) a few years ago. Good times. Angel of Harlem was my surprise favourite. (The surprise being it got played).
I did that with pearl jam once, but they didn't play angel of harlem
HA.!!. MEE TOO.. well 3x in 4 days lol Wed. in LA then Friday & Sat. in Vegas back in 2006. After 30 years of U2 fandom, and literally telling my self EVERY damn show thru the years.. " One day,.. i'll be RIGHT UP FRONT dammit,.....who I gotta blow...?
..I FINALLY got vip access for Sat, and was able to be right up front in the pit...coulda grabbed The Edge's leg when he was soloing on the catwalk...
Keep the faith.

Thanks!
Would you consider doing an odds are tutorial? 🙏 i have so much fun learning from watching your videos brother
:) thanks brother
"Go and sing it to your ex..." - priceless! 😁
:)
Good job Ryan 👌👏🎸
Ive learned and forgotten this song at least half a dozen times. Currently its in the forgotten column
Are you me?😕
I have a theory on this. Stuff that’s really hard to play takes longer to learn and gets ingrained into your brain. I can pick up a guitar and play the intro from “Little Wing” after 6 months without playing it and remember every bit. Because it took me ages to learn to play it. But stuff that is easy, you run through so quick that it doesn’t stick. Play it a few times, move onto something else, realise a few weeks later that you haven’t played it since and now you’ve forgotten it completely.
every time you forget a song a kermit gets a cramp and has to get out of the pond for fifteen minutes.
@@RyanLendt I feel bad now. Muppets are life.
Love Cornells cover of this track with Metallica's One lyrics. Works so so well. Awesome lesson Boss
thanks squid
@@RyanLendt no no no no no no no no no no no no no.. .no No! Thankyou O blessed guitar teacher who teaches in a human and fun way. As an intermediate level guitar player your videos do really help me immensely and give little sparks of motivation. By Far the No.1 guitar teacher on UA-cam. Plus your obvious love for Pearl Jam and grunge shines through and thats my era.
Dude.. Please do another lesson "Stay (faraway so close)" thanks.

Nice lesson and nice shirt!
Would you mind adding Cold Fame by Band of Skulls to the list please? Was listening to it the other day thinking I’d love to play along to it.

Well today I learned that I've unintentionally been playing Fmaj7 as my go to baby F
it's a fine replacement 9 times out of 10
This sounds much nicer than the open chords version, but its tough to sing along with
yeah i'd intro it and then just play the chords if i was by myself
Hey Ryan...love your lessons. Was wondering if you'd cover the lesson How do you know you by Days of the New? Great song. Thanks in advance!

@@RyanLendt nah...you're probably canadian ... thanks for the good stuff
I thought it was the Circle of Life. By the way the Circle of Fourths is wayy underrated.
it rules us all
❤❤ very nice!
Yet playing “Ten” by Pearl Jam is 10x more fun.
and playing Sum 41 is 1/41st as fun :P
Do you take requests for obscure bands? Any way you could do Strange Fruit by a band called Catherine Wheel?
Well hurt each other and well do it again
it's the circle of fifths. or something.
Hey Ryan, am I right that you haven't done any Jeff Buckley videos, that could be fun, maybe grace, mojo pin or last goodbye.
true facts
can you show us how to playThe art of letting go by stone temple pilots?!
good thinking
Is that the fender anniversary strat?
that is the mexican strat my mother bought me in 1994 in castle shannon PA
Can you do a lesson on Trains by porcupine tree?

Do you think you could play dirt by Alice In Chains
can't believe i haven't done that yet
Mazal tov for the new haircut
why thank you
Sh!t this 1 the best!🎯
thanks!
Ryan my good friend, 👍 can you please do me the honor of finding out how Tom Petty finger picks Angel Dream, now I use Travis picking for it, which works pretty well, and he plays it as we all know with the Capo on the 5th, but the sequencing for his finger picking the actual song, on all parts appears to be done with just two fingers, and three at the most, and in a weird pattern, but ofcourse not too dissimilar to the Travis one, but enough of a difference for me to keep going out of time whilst playing along to it with the standard Travis pattern??
Please please please please please please pleeeeease, help. And could you give me a massive shout out, and send me some of your love!! It would make my day, my week and my year!!
Thanks pal, much love!!
Sounds like Cake performing One
Comment number ONE…but were not the same
That’s really good
ok but i'm not carrying you
Awesome awesome lesson dude. Your hair seems to be getting shorter!!!!
it's un-growing!!!

Have you done overfloater by soundgarden? 😀
Really cool lesson too by the way thank you
good grief no i haven't!!
I think I will have a go at learning it
I want a lesson by you or Maria by Mateus Asato
Hey teach us how to play Lenny Kravitz - It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over
9/14/22. 10:04am. Pearl Jam plays at 7:30pm tonight in Camden, NJ. Ticket prices have dropped. NO WAY would I go under current circumstances. A stupid rock concert is not worth catching anything, or being harassed about masks or taking the you-know-what, if you have to. I don’t know what the current rules are.Has Stone Gossard been wearing a black face mask while playing at these concerts? Why? Take care, Ryan.
Also Edge finger picks the intro.
Cool! Perfect lesson for me. Thanks Ryan! Great song! Sing this to your ex😄
:)
New hair new hair
it's the sequel to no rain
Nice Haircut!
thanks!
👍🏼
Or you can finally see the decrypted acoustic and muffled intro properly ua-cam.com/video/nbZhd8qgz08/v-deo.html as far as I know no one has ever showed this.
See, this is what I love about U2. And blegghh, er, Coldplay.
Once you learn one song, you know them all!🤮😂👍😎
hahaha
you got a very good tone out of your guitar for this video.
but it isn't any kind of Beethoven so maybe just leave it at that.
Baby F :)
Hey, you've stolen that from my channel and played it better 😅🤣
God I hate U2.
Play it wrong. By quite a bit actually. You videos are normally better. Redo it please.
Great lesson, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
