This is the biggest mistake I've ever done to my hair. Fortunately it's been a year and I've used natural treatment like coconut and castor oiling as well as healthy diet. I'm now growing it back and say NEVER to hair color.
I've suffered excess hair loss since I was a teenager and my hair, especially at the crown was noticeably thin and a frequent cause of distress over the years. In the past several years I've also suffered allergic reaction to dyes, permanent and non permanent, with sore, itching scalp and eczema resulting. Due to this, I had no choice than to stop using any dye. After over 6 months of stopping dyeing hair, I've noticed I'm losing less hair in the shower. I doubt it will fully recover now but I'm hopeful, despite accepting I'm going slowly grey, I'd rather have more hair and a healthier scalp. I have black hair and usually only ever used black hair colour. Hair dyes are toxic to everyone although some people are more apparently affected. There's evidence they cause internal damage too as they pass through your skin.

But although my crown area will always be thinner, hair loss has slowed and hair feels fuller. All those years of abusing my hair and scalp with dyes. I see one of my friends has the same problem but she won't stop dying her hair as doesn't want to be grey. I'd sooner save my hair and be grey than go bald!
I used a very very small amount of hair dye probably doesn't exceed one third of the bottle and split it once in a week for two successive weeks , it was just hair color lightener to lift it from very dark brown to light brown or dark copper blonde but I've noticed I've put a big amount (not knowing) of the oxidiser , my hair was wet to so i suppose it helped the chemical to penetrate the sculp more .. it looks strange how my hair is thin i even tried to shorten it so i can comp it easier without much movement , i just regret doing it , and what would have things been if i used the whole amount of cream or even tried to color it in any light blonde shade .. This happened to me after using for once !!
have you considered using natural plant based dyes like henna or indigo (for black hair) those are literally just ground up leaves and they work SO well. especially for black hair. Highly recommend you look into it

Going 3 shades darker wont hurt it if you use a demi. Protein treatments work well but its most important to use one with moisture because portion does drive out moisture and can make hair brittle. I use redken extreme cat every other wash.
No guarantee even with a demi. I had been using Wella Color Charm demi-permanent for about 5 years, and although my hair strands got thinner and more fly away, it was ok. I liked it because it did not turn my hair brassy like Loreal, Clairol, and Revlon. Then, 2 years ago, after coloring with that same Wella product, I stepped into the shower to rinse it out and the water began backing up in the bathtub, rising up to my ankles. I looked down and saw lots of my hair floating around. The cold chill of fear shot up my spine, and after finishing rinsing, stepped out of the tub, worriedly took my wide tooth comb and very, very gently began combing my hair, only to see more hair fall out. I looked carefully at many long strands that had fallen onto the countertop. All had a tiny root bulb at the ends. Not good. Not good, at all. Well, what could I do? I carefully dried my hair on cool. Then, because I was very concerned at how much of my hair might have fallen out, I gathered my shoulder-length hair into the hair barrette that I normally used. My heart sunk into my stomach. Previously, I could barely be able to close that barrette over my hair. This time, there was 25% less hair than normal -- hair that was now missing -- hair that was gone. After my hair fell out, I stopped coloring my hair for 10 months, and let my sprinkling of gray return. During that coloring hiatus I did tons of research, after which I began using some "natural" hair coloring products (with little to no chemicals). I have not found a perfect product, but at least my hair isn't falling out. In case anyone is interested, the four products that I tried and seemed the safest for me were: Silver to Gold (messy to apply + hard to rinse out); Surya Brasil Henna Cream (covers well, but washes out in 6-8 shampoos); Gray Riddance (turns my scalp orange/tan for a week); and Palette by Nature (pricey & needs to be applied twice). I haven't settled on any one of them, yet, and have learned that I need to leave these products on my hair 2-3 times longer than the directions indicate in order for them to adequately cover my 15% gray. It's been two years (this May, 2021), and my hair still does not fill that barrette like it used to. I now sport a shorter chin-length hairstyle to give the illusion that I have more hair than I really do. I will never be able to go back to any of the chemical brands again. I never again want to feel that cold chill of fear shoot up my spine.
I forgot to mention that my natural hair color is a medium brown and I always applied a light brown on my hair, since all I was trying to do was cover my grays. I never aimed for 2 or 3 shades lighter or darker.

dyed my hair black and it was fine, both my husband and I have medium brown almost blackish hair naturally. I used dye remover and it turned my hair orange and now that I toned it with blonde it is breaking so I may have to go to the salon when I can afford it and get my natural medium brown hair back again

ammonia is not the problem. in fact, ammonia substitutions are far more damaging, it's just a marketing gimmick. ammonia itself is much less damaging than bleach, and is only a problem if allergic. i started to lose A LOT of hair after applying a black garnier nutrise hair mask to my faded revlon black dye. once the shedding slowed down a month and a half later, i dyed my hair black again with revlon #1... i'm still noticing 20 hairs fall out a day, (it used to be 0)

I think the salon over processed my hair causing telogen effluvium. Check it out and ask your doctor about it.

Revlon colour silk hair colour is safe. Ammonia & Peroxid free. I colour my hair for many years have no hair problem.
