To be fair, Malaysia's debt problem is fixable. As they have various sources of income streams to sort it out if they wish to. Let's not forget that Malaysia has some of the biggest asset management and trust companies with hundreds of billions in assets. Also they have an A grade debt rating.

People like to make it as if Malaysia's debt problems are so out of control when it isn't. At 60% of debt to gdp it isn't bad at all. If 60% is bad then what do you consider The US debt is, a nightmare? And Japan at 250% debt to gdp is what? Like a total catastrophe? The thing is even Anwar has been over inflating this as if it is such a disaster when it isn't. Sure things could have been a lot better, absolutely right. But it isn't a catastrophe either and its manageable. Certainly doesn't justify the cut off subsidies and all that.

@@secrets.295 Only fools would draw a comparison between Msia's debt with Japan & the US debts. Malaysia is nowhere near the levels of economic efficiency & productivity of Japan & the US. You don't have to look very far, just take a look at Singapore will make you realize how fragile & tiny Malaysia is. Do you know that Singapore (which is known as a little red dot) is more productive than the entire Malaysia despite Malaysia's land area is 441 times larger than Singapore, and Malaysia's population is 5 times larger than Singapore? Singapore's 2023 GDP was 500 Billion USD, whereas Malaysia's GDP for the same year was only 400 Billion USD. From this comparison, you can see how inefficient and low-skilled Malaysia is. Malaysia largely depends on some "natural resources", palm oil, agriculture, and some basic manufacturing to survive. The US GDP was 27 Trillion USD for 2023, that's 67.5 times larger than that of Malaysia! Furthermore, USD is the world's reserves currency which allows the US to print tons of USD and export their inflation to the entire world. Can Malaysia do the same thing as the world's powerful country do? (obviously the answer is a big NO!). Then what's the point of comparing with the US and Japan's debts?

      Well.
      Anwar has himself to blame
      He contradicts himself.
First he said PM should not be the Finance Minister.
First he mocked Zahid . Yet he appointed Zahid as TPM. He claimed he had no choice .
Who are the people he was trying to mislead? Himself?
He had a better alternative. He could have appointed Mohd Hassan . And Mohd Hassan outshines Zahid in practically all aspects.
Mohd Hassan is highly regarded in Malay community. He is down to earth, speaks better English , widely supported by Malays transcending political lines.
Should Anwar appoint Mohd hAssan as TPM, this govt will receive more Malay votes.
The thing with Zahid is that vast majority of Mslays do not like him. They accept UMNO but not Zahid.
Many in PH trying to pretend that Anwar has no choice but to appoint Zahid .
      Seriously?
What could Zahid do? Without the post of TPM ,he most likely will be kicked out from UMNO leadership position.
And THIRD, Rafizi is a joke.

Anwar had to make tough choices by picking a less ideal team to gain power, because that's how democracy works. When he became Prime Minister and Finance Minister, he took bold steps that should've been done years ago, like taxing the rich and cutting unnecessary subsidies. These changes were necessary because it’s not the government’s job to keep supporting sectors that don’t need it.
Looking at his actions now, it seems like Anwar isn’t too focused on winning the next election-mainly because Malaysia is still divided along racial and religious lines. I think his goal is to push Malaysians to work harder during these tough times. We've been too comfortable with subsidies and have become too relaxed compared to our neighbor Singapore, where the cost of living is high, and people work much harder. Just look at their currency strength.
Since Trump came to power, Anwar also had to adjust Malaysia’s strategy to navigate US policies. I believe our country has huge potential if we can tackle the main issues we face today. Once these problems are addressed, the next government will likely be in a better position to focus on improving Malaysia, without having to take drastic measures.

Anwar Ibrahim’s tenure as Prime Minister has been nothing short of a disappointment. His so-called reforms to reduce the fiscal deficit have done little to tackle Malaysia’s staggering debt, which remains one of the highest in Southeast Asia. Instead of addressing the root causes, he’s resorted to increasing taxes and cutting subsidies-moves that only add more burden to the rakyat. While he claims these measures target the wealthy, the reality is clear: they’ve done little to fix Malaysia’s low tax-to-GDP ratio, exposing weak governance. Meanwhile, household debt continues to spiral out of control, with no real solutions in sight beyond vague talk of financial literacy. Anwar’s policies lack vision, his leadership fails to inspire, and his decisions-far from helping the nation-are pushing ordinary Malaysians further into hardship. Simply put, he’s proving to be a poor leader at a critical time.

Taxing the rich more isn't the solution and his definition of who is rich is inconclusive. Malaysia has issues with brain drain, you take away the subsidies without cutting tax rate, these people will just move to other countries since Malaysian workforce is highly skilled and always in demand. You don't have to look far, many Malaysian engineers in the Oil and Gas industry have moved to Middle East for high pay and low tax. What's gonna happen now?
Debt has been going up although they are mostly domestic.

I think wise prudent spending by the government is more viable by not building too many mega projects that increases the country deficits. The money collected by fiscal means can further reduced the country deficit debts of 1.5 trillion rm to a more manageable level. The household debts is a result of consumer high borrowings on the car loans caused by the protection of the car infant industries. Whatever monies left after spending on housing debts 60% and car loans 13% is not enough for an average income earners (27% left).
I think it high time the car industries like Proton and Perodua must learn to compete internationally and the car protection infant taxes be reduced gradually so that families will have more money to spent on essential items. If Singapore government can managed the housing of the people like the HDB concepts so well, I can't see why it is not done here. The housing debts of 60% is too high in the long run and something needs to be done to reduce the housing price speculations that raised the property to unimageable prices. Let us pray we have good leaders who can managed the economy well and get us out the country debts so we can have a better life for everyone here in Malaysia.
