I ran both. One thing I like about the kerosene heaters is that it's a single unit that is easier to move around because there's no bottle attached. With the propane heaters, you have a hose and a tank always attached to each other. I used to put the 40 lb bottle outside the door. Youre spot on with the propane advantages by the way and one thing I could add is that my propane heater was up and running full blast within like 30 seconds whereas the kerosene heater took a good 5 minutes to warm up. I had one of those round Duraheats. Pain in the neck to refill because the opening was so small.

Propane is good for heating a garage or shop that is not too well insulated. A year and a half ago, when the first wave of supply shortages hit, there was no propane to be found within a 30 mile radius of me, but the 2 gas stations near me both had K-1 Kerosene for around $4.40 a gallon

Good point. However, your situation was different than mine because it was during a shortage where mine was an outage.

Good presentation! I think it's best to have both! 🤣 I actually prefer kerosene, I'm finding that you can use diesel in place of kerosene and it burns cleaner and has virtually zero smell and no smoke, a lot less smell than 1-K. And you can get diesel from any pickup truck, just need a hose LOL. The problem with propane is that everyone uses it, not sure you'll always find it when things go south, virtually no one has a kerosene lantern or heater, and I bet no one even thinks about heating with diesel. My 83 year old mom had never heard of a kerosene heater, that's how popular they are, and here in Colorado I've never seen a kerosene pump at the gas station. I'm guessing because the new clean diesel is better. I run three Dietz lanterns on diesel 24/7 out in the chicken coop to keep the eggs from freezing. And I'd say refilling a propane tank is not a skill that most people have, I wouldn't have a clue how to do it. In an emergency I'd be trading my propane tanks for cans of diesel LOL.

Modern diesel does not burn cleaner than kerosene. Too many additives that dirty the burn.

Right, you can't get kerosene when the pump does not work.

It all depends on your area and how they sell both of them it's best to have both kerosene is safer

Propane is a hydrocarbon, just like kerosene. When burned it emits water and CO2 just like kerosene, both being byproducts of combustion. CO2 emissions are about a wash when comparing equivalent heating outputs.

I get k1 at the pump, also what do you mean you can't adjust the settings? They have a dial for variable heat settings on kerosene heaters. It honestly sounds like you have never had a Kerosene convection heater, they are 99.9% efficient. Kerosene is safer to store than Propane. I use both

The radiant heaters don't really have an adjustment.

Propane is risky to store indoor, so you have to keep it outside where it could be stolen during a crisis

    • @ragingbullhcwf
      @ragingbullhcwf  2 роки тому

Theoretically yes, but as you know, many people store gas cans and other power equipment indoors filled with gasoline. The likelihood of propane spilling or leaking is very low.

I live in the southern US and I have both kerosene and propane heaters. Kerosene is certainly more expensive, it is not available from gas stations here.
When using the propane heaters I double check all my connections by spraying them with some soapy water. I have never had an issue with using propane.

Both are hydrocarbons and will release CO², but a yellow burning karosean heater will produce much more CO than a blue flame karosean heater or a propane heater.
So as long as the flame is blue you're fine :)
    (A bit nerdy, sorry)
But the stink and spil of karosean is intense!
What kind of karosean heaters have you grown up with? I'm getting together a 'emergency heater' and making a burner and a cache for hiking and hunting using karosean.
    Best Regards from Norway

Hello, Kerosun Radiant 36 and Sanyo OHR 80. If you burn clear 1K Kerosene you're fine but it's expensive. On sale, clear kero is $6 per gallon. But when winter comes, it's $8-10. Stay warm my friend!

I got a kerosene heater also propane heater and propane stove 250 gallon tank I been using the kerosene heater lately figuring it would be more efficient but it's not it cost about the same if not more only thing is kerosene for me is cheaper short term propane cheaper long term because if your low on money you can't just buy 50 gallons at a time to get you buy I think it's like 260 dollar minimum here something like that I might as well bite the bullet and go head get it refilled lol

LMAO!!! You really said one of the advantages of propane is you can steal it, that was too funy. Anyways, I'd like to play devil's advocate though, and defend kerosene a bit. One reason I like kerosene is actually it is a lot safer. Propane can be very dangerous, far more dangerous than kerosene, there is a reason it is never recommended to use those propane cans indoors, if there is any small leak the fumes can easily cause an explosion, kerosene is a lot more stable and the fumes aren't explosive. As far as safety is concerned, kerosene is by far the safest fuel out there. Also, a lot of your criticisms were against K-2, and yeah, I wouldn't recommend anyone use that stuff. My local gas station does carry clear, good clear K-1 at the pump though, if I had to pay those ridiculous retail prices for K-1 I wouldn't recommend it either, but kerosene is great if you do have a good supplier around you, and again it really can't be beaten as far as safety goes.

People were going around robbing propane tanks from backyards. All my tanks were chained up to each other along with my generator and gas cans. They were also stealing generators by starting a lawn mower, wheeling it up next to the generator and running off with the generator. People heard an engine running and they thought it was the generator when it was actually a lawn mower.
