I just found you... And I've been using totes for years for my potato's and my back yard cucumber plant and I thought I was the only one that did that... I also have a bunch of ( 5gal.) ice cream container's for free and I've been using them to now for the past two years... I grow in the ground in my front yard for my tomatoes and they grew to about 10 foot tall last year. And so did my front yard cucumber. My pepper plants did really well the year before. We will see this year how it goes... What kind of plant food do you recommend????
You have single handedly begun a garden revolution, woman!! DEFINITELY you need to write a book before someone beats you to it! Years ago my husband built a 4x8 raised bed. I planted a few things & got some tomatoes. Most plants died. It was too far from the house, didn't get watered enough, & at 71 I gave up when it got hot. This year (before I found you) I planted 8 galvanized tubs around the deck. I'm excited about gardening again! I still didn't water enough in the hot 100° Missouri summer, but got more veggies than ever before. For the 1st time I got a couple of pumpkins, cantaloupe, & watermelon, some cukes, peppers & scads of tomatoes! Too many rotted because I didn't know what to do with them & didn't know you can freeze them. Lettuce & carrots were failures, but learned a lot from that. Drilling holes on tub bottoms didn't work too well, but cannot wait til next spring. Already collecting tubs, & will reuse some galvanized ones with a few holes in the sides. I know this is way too long, but I'm so delighted with my little bit of success, that I HAD to tell someone! No one else understands how exciting this is. THANK YOU!!!
I share your enthusiasm...I'm growing sugar baby watermelons in a tote and it's so exciting to see them get bigger and bigger and bigger. Robbie is a great teacher!
@@pattimears200 I remember buying a few start up baby watermelon plants and planting them in the tote. The tote is up against a lattice and the vines hooked up to that very nicely. Now, I'm trying for the first time, growing pomegranates from seed. First, I placed them in a wet napkin into a sealable bag waited about 2 weeks, then planted them in small pots. It's been about a week, so far so good. Crossing my fingers X.
@@DandLwelcomehome thank you so very much! Last year my 90 yr. Old mom had a man who does their yard work bring some mulch and put around her flowers and a couple of watermelon vines actually grew from the mulch! We have never seen anything like it! Don't know the varieties but, we had free watermelons last summer and they were delicious! I'm thinking ok, we will have to grow our own now!
This is the most successful garden season I’ve ever had. I live on the east coast of Virginia it’s hot and steamy here. Grow bags didn’t work here, but the totes are amazing. I also use 5 gallon buckets. Although I never wanted to grow in plastic containers I kept an open mind and I found out that totes and 5 gallon buckets are the answer for me.
I know how you feel, but we live in a Plastic world, so I keep what I can out of the landfill, and never store plastic water bottles full of water in my car, ( I found out a very good friend did that for months, in the trunk of their car in case they wanted a bottle of water) I had to let them know, NO NO NO, usually I let people do what they want, but in this case, that was not at all good for someone's health, that hot closed trunk can get over 180degrees, and months in the truck...well you know. But outdoors will never get that hot, and soil is even cooler than the air. SO, all is good, take care, thanks, Robbie
Hi Robbie, thanks so much for your videos. Setup two totes for my mom who wanted to get her hands dirty digging in a garden again. I did not have any chairs so I used two cedar fence pickets laid across cinder blocks. She loved the colored totes. Mom is celebrating her 99 the birthday in Nov. she planted some flowers and some vegetables and is now hoping for warm weather to return.
I love watching you. I am 80 and do not want to bend down and plant. Also. My favorite part of the totes is....I can plant them in the shade and my neighbor will place them where ever I want. Of course he can pick anything he wants. Old fashion barting..lol. Thank You so much.
This is such a fantastic idea! At first I was apprehensive about plastic in the garden but then my fiance put it to me this way: the stuff plastic should be used for is stuff you want to last as long as possible. Plastic not breaking down makes it a problem in landfills and is why we stay away from single use plastic as much as possible. But that lack of breakdown? Is what makes it perfect for things you want to use for a long time, such as garden containers. Can't wait to have a much more economic and fruitful season this year 😁
Throw in some worms, and a cover crop and top it off with some straw for shade because wigglers don't like sun. Not a a lot of worms because they will multiply in no time
I bought me a soldering iron last week. I already love this tool. It’s so handy if you don’t need a drill. Thanks for the great idea!! You are an inspiration!!!
Watching your videos makes me so happy. I also love gardening in totes and containers. My husband is an "in the ground" gardener but he's supportive of my container style and very impressed with the successes I've had with my crops. I LOVE your videos and your personality...please never stop!!
OMG! That was fantastic! I got a bunch of bags a few years ago for 75% off, but you DID GREAT! Remember, use them as needed and never toss them out if they dry out. Just add some water to them and let them re-hydrate, and they will be as good as new. Take care, Robbie
I just love your positive attitude. First, I started the deal with the hummingbird feeders, where we habe currently 15 buzzers buzz around, and I started two tote bins for right now. Thank you, you are my Covid survival lady and helping me to cope! 😍
I have to admit, my veggie plants growing in totes are doing much better than anything else. For my birthday this Thursday, I had my daughter buy me two more totes and soil. I have both the round ones and the square ones.
I was thinking of those big buckets that they sell for kids toys to store in would work good since they are usually massive! Also I will be using a decomposting method with sticks and leaves and such in the bottoms of the totes to take up space and it breaks down into food for the plants, I also have composting worms that could work out in these systems, wow as a new sub I'm getting so many ideas
Totally! Those 2 big zucchini looked like watermelon...it was crazy, oops...I think one is still out there, I hope I can lift it and carry it in, LOL. Plants near by love the totes, that is what Gary and my daughter are doing now with totes in their garden, using the totes to also feed the plants in the ground, take care, thanks so much, Robbie
Robbie, Since I recently stumbled upon your wonderful videos, you’ve inspired me so much! I already made my first bird bath with items from around my house and a few thrift items! You are such a blessing to watch and learn from. I also just made my first tote! Waiting for my zucchini, spinach and pole beans to sprout 🌱 before adding them to the tote. After watching I now realize, I can grow multiple veggies in one tote if I want. If this works like I believe it will, this is just the beginning to a more self sufficient and fruitful way of life that I now realize is truly possible because of you!! Thank you for sharing all your valuable wisdom with all of us! You are a true blessing to me! Hi 👋🏻 from NC! ❤️🌱🥬🥔🥒
2 piece of advice. I live in an area that can be 100 degrees in the summer and down to 0 in the winter. I didn’t empty my totes when winter came, in the summer some of my bins and totes had become brittle. I recommend emptying the bins and storing them out of the elements if you live in a similar area. 2nd I have a few 8’x4’x 2’ to help use up some of the 24” depth I filled the bottom layer with yard waste. Old logs, the dried tumble weeds, autumn leaves, these will all decompose and fertile the soil toward the bottom. I have also seen videos where seasoned gardens will add compostable items into in a layer. We have a very short growth period and the ground she be pretty warm before planting some vegetables, the bins allow the soil to warm up faster. I can also do a mini greenhouse tunnel with hosing or pvc over a individual bin for cheap, allowing me to plant vegetables that aren’t freeze resistant early then I could otherwise AND also extends my growing season into the fall past our first few freezes.
Hi there, Debbie here..I love your chair garden..cute idea,,I can’t wait to tell my Dad the idea,,he’s 87 and loves to garden but it’s been hard on him to do in ground...
I wish I had started my container garden with totes. The grow bags have been hit or miss (mostly miss 🤦🏽♀️😆 ) gonna keep my eyes peeled for sales on storage totes. Spring is gonna be awesome
I use shoe totes since I'm one person and my shelves are short. I use the ones from lowes that are 12 1/2 inches deep. I also use Walmart's reusable grocery bags (they're the same material as the expensive grow bags). I also reuse salad boxes to start seeds. Definitely going to try a large tote for my winter rotation. Your garden is extremely beautiful!
So I live in high desert and have some of the same issues as you.. i did want to add if people are growing potatoes you can also bury the tote 1/4 to 1/2 of the tote deep to help keep the soil cooler and damper. What a great video Robbie. Thanks I was a bit skeptical but all your points make great sense and what a wonderful idea for apartments and renters too. You can take your beds with you if you have to move. Thanks for all your clever ideas.
New to gardening and have been feeling very timid about starting. This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I really love it. Love the colorful chairs as well. All my hippiness came rushing up when I saw this and I actually feel like I can do this!! Thank you! New subscriber!
I love using totes too. You can move them around. They don’t tend to get a lot of weeds. They are big enough to do bigger plants in or a bunch of potatoes or carrots. I love the idea of putting them on top of cheap plastic chairs. I’ve always put them right on the ground.
Wow ! I love the chair and tote garden idea! I've got 2 white plastic chairs left from a patio set that I bought 30 years ago that no one can sit on, because they're degrading, leaving a white dusty residue on clothing. Was thinking of taking them to the dump this summer, but using them for a raised bed would be the perfect solution! Thanks for these awesome ideas!
Omg! I bought a tote for a small spot between regular garden plants because I thought it would be better than digging into already planted space. Boy! Do I now know what a great idea it was!! Thanks!
My totes are doing great! I made a plant base pesto pasta last night. Chard has been picked and we sautéed with garlic, onions and balsamic vinegar. I’m disabled so these totes are a real blessing! Thank you!
Love that pesto you made!!! Sounds great, this year I am doing more like that too. So glad the totes worked out so great for you, nothing better in the world than some real live food, grown, picked and so fresh! Even a little live food goes a long way for us all! Thanks so much for sharing all this, take care Robbie
Very informative video, exactly as you said - just grow something! Usually you start with few plants and end up with not having enough space because you want to grow more plants 🍀
For those concerned with longevity of totes due to sun, depending on how spendy you want to get and how much effort you want to put in, try wrapping your totes with that shiny foil bubble wrap insulation and then covering that with a couple of layers of shade cloth or reed/babmboo fencing, enough so the foil isn't too obvious. One could also set the totes in a garden bed and planting around the totes with flowering annuals or herbs that grow to the same height to disguise the sides of the totes. Oregano is a good choice since it's not too demanding and will be happy with runoff from the tote, especially column-type oregano. Let it flower, the bees will love it. Borage also gets nice and big, somewhat prickly but another bee favorite. It can be a self-seeder but volunteers are easy to remove and borage is GREAT for your compost. Not sure how very cold weather will affect the totes as the last garden I had was in California. However, nothing will last forever. I'd clean'em up at the end of each season and put them in a garage or shed if I was gardening in snow or hard feeeze territory.
Quite the inspiration Robbie...I’m going to find TOTES!!! YOU are right about the grow bags. I’m going to put mine in one tote so they stay damp and I can grow little bits in each one. But next summer totes for my green beans so I don’t have to bend down so much! I’ve got walking onions in a nursery grow can as well as sprouting broccoli, then sugar peas in another. Then they water what’s under them..!
I saw your show last night. Today I ordered 5 totes from Walmart. They were $7, but they did deliver them. They were still cheaper than any other system I have found. I have tons of leaves and food scraps that I have been stockpiling. Tomorrow, I will fill the tubs with compost. The planting soil arrives next week. If I only get great tomatoes, it will be worth the $70 I have spent!
Put the "chunky stuff" like leaves and branches on the bottom, you can also then layer some cardboard from shipping boxes and toss in a few handfuls of any soil, even native soil, followed by mixing up all those leaves and foodscraps, topped with your arriving planting soil, and you should end up growing a TON of Tomatoes and other great food items. AND do not forget the drain holes. SOUND GREAT, have fun!
Brilliant. Thank you. I bought chicken wire to wrap around amazon boxes which would last a year or two just so that I could start small and build. This is way easier and the concept of keeping water in without drowning or drying is awesome. Happy gardening! I know I will be now!
Wow, when you are talking about capturing the nutrients that drain out of the container or growing something next to it, that is flipping smart, thank you. I have never heard anyone else cover that concept. Everyone just talks about how the nutrients drain away, but no one is capturing them...
I love container gardening! I live in an apartment complex and don't really have room to Garden. Most of us don't. I only have the small sidewalk area that goes by my apartment. So I can only use smaller planters that don't impede my neighbors. Garden Planters can be very expensive and very cheaply made. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities! Ty for your wonderful video!!
I have several totes that I am growing my fall garden in it, and even made a video on it. You have given me a whole bunch more reasons to believe in them ... And buy more totes!!!
This video made me subscribe because it's so easy, it's exactly what I was looking for trying to set up a new garden at a new home, and your enthusiasm is amazing!
I love my totes too. Thank you so much for teaching us how to do it. This is my second year and found I need veg, herbs and flowers that tolerate shade. Because of the mature maple trees all around. Happy gardening! Ms Pat from southern Indiana 🤗🥰
Great information Robbie!! If you don't have chairs.... you could possibly fill a tote with wood chips and place another tote on top to bring it up higher.... although a chair would probably be better support. I love your videos and your positive energy!! Thanks for sharing!!
I followed your advice and created a tote garden on garden chairs and they're all flexible. My only problem was not enough sun on my back porch and patio so I'm going to do good shade loving plants vegetables and flowers this year. I'm not giving up 😄 Ms Pat from southern Indiana 💞
Robbi, I've been following you all year. Got my totes, my scrap compost, etc. I trusted you because you are so enthusiastic. I'm still learning from you, but we got our first cantaloupe. Honest. It was twice as heavy as store bought and talk about sweet! Table scrap compost I'm sure key. And tons of tomatoes, loads of basil, and other herbs. Turnips, another crop of tomatoes, bell peppers, collards - winter crops - doing really well. Thank you and Gary!
@@patriciabongiardino2847 Check out "Robbie and Gary" videos on UA-cam. They have a ton! In each video Robbie mentions some aspect of how tote containers are used, plus much more. You mention lids; there are specific uses for extra lids, but mainly its the tote container that's of interest. Think of the tote as a large rectangular flower pot to grow veggies and fruit in. Amazon sells the totes. Had mine for 3 years still good. Scraps = any part of a veg or fruit you do not/cannot consume. Save the ends of lettuce, onions and banana peels, egg shells, coffee grounds, any veg and fruit gone bad... I save in plastic bags (nonleak) and keep in fridge. In a week I've collected enough scraps to bury in the garden or in a tote. My composting is plant derivative, except for eggshells. Though I know some gardeners include dairy and meat products in their compost. As long as you don't put cleaning chemicals on paper towels toss them in "scaps" bag too along with used napkins after meals. You need "browns" and "greens" to effectively make compost. UA-cam these terms. But Robbie and Gary videos answer most if not all your basic gardening for food questions. Eventually you'll tweak what you learn and adapt your own methods according to your environment, climate and what works best for you... but learn and the basics first. I have not needed to buy soil in years. I make my own via simple "cold composting" And "scrap" soil is organic, rich, and attracts beneficial microbes and earthworms that play an important tole in enhancing your compost soil. Scraps break down less than 2 weeks in the ground for me. Believe me if you start gardening now you won't regret it later. I'm sure I have more than 50 small potatoes in one of my totes. I do nothing but water them. Robbie takes all the apprehension out of planting and growing food, and presents and challenges you to a fun adventure of eating what you grow. Whether you'll garden or not, Robbie and Gary's garden tours are uplifting and positive, instructive and entertaining. Their videos are an EXCELLENT place to start. AND READ ALL THE COMMENTS THE VIDEOS GENERATE. Everyone is learning and sharing. In my opinion gardening is a creative art as valid and fufilling as playing music or painting on a canvas. Hope your question was answered! And good luck, happy gardening!
This is my first year "gardening" in containers. I had planted some peas in an old tote I had and then discovered your videos. My peas are doing great so far. I'm setting up my first stacked tote to try stacking. Love you ideas and your garden.
Wonderful! I have a video where I did the stacking of totes too. Hope it can give you some ideas. Thanks, Robbie ua-cam.com/video/w7EWikoxGgs/v-deo.html
Bobbie I have been watching UA-cam on gardening for all of the pandemic to learn how to garden and your presentation is the most beautiful and best that I can do you are teaching me so much the other channels were just overpowering and I didn’t wasn’t able to afford thank you so much thank you
Thank you for this tutorial. I have vegetables planted in the black 27 gallon totes from Home Depot. I used the yellow tote lids as water catch trays underneath. Of course, you have to drill drainage holes in the totes, not the lids first. I planted them last fall. They fit perfectly on a piano dolly. This makes for easy mobility in case of extreme weather. In zone 8a we only had 2 stretches of a week each where I had to pull my planters inside. To get a lid that ALMOST matches you have to get the clear 27 gallon totes from Lowes. They hold on with wood clamps. I had greens all winter and now I am growing tomatoes, peppers and peas as well as kale, collards and peas.
Ty for the explanation of the plastic- I know many people needed that- also one day ppl need to understand the difference of planting then covering with a mulch and planting with UN composted mulch ! 🤪 I understand many people do not have knowledge or understanding!!
Thank you. Robbie for your suggestion. I have learned so much from you. I have started my fall garden in totes. And now I'm keeping all my old garden plants in a bucket to use.
O M G. I found your channel last night after I had sworn off container gardening after last summer's fiasco!! I planted lots of vegetables in 5 gal buckets and got absolutely no food!! I'm figuring out now that I didn't drill enough holes in them or they weren't big enough. I dreaded having to use a drill or large nail to make the holes then I saw how you did yours with that heating apparatus. I ordered one from Amazon last night and will be trying to garden again this year. I live in an apartment but I'm going to try to use those tubs. I have lots from moving and traveling. I'm plan to use one as a compost! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Moved from Illinois to Arkansas last year and realized quick that raised beds or containers were the way to go. Used totes since we had a bunch from moving and grew some amazing tomatoes and ghost pepper plant.
Robbie I love how you recycle everything you can (leaves, water from the bins, etc.) and it makes your garden great! Thanks so much for all your tips!! :)
P.S. Have you ever tried using a leaky plastic kiddie pool as a planter? I have one I'm thinking of trying sunflowers or wildflower seeds in - since it seems a shame for it to end up in the dump! :0
@@lisakruger5289, I bought 2 kiddie pools on sale at the end of last summer with the idea of planting sweet potatoes in one & squash in the other. I haven't set them up yet, but want to do it soon, (I've got sweet potato slips ready to go in NOW). I hope that it works out! I've never done it before but I think that it would work just fine. If I were you, I'd give it a try. I'm a novice gardener myself, no expert, so you may want to check with other more experienced gardeners. I just don't see using a kiddie pool being a problem myself. Good luck to you in your gardening! 😊
Hi Robbie it is 4:30 am I watching your videos I will gardening on patio in apartment building I have to share patio I’m doing short season vegetable seeds I live in Wisconsin but I really in joy your videos thank you so much for your garden videos your garden is huge and beautiful thank you❤️🙏🏽
I had an extra black tote and took a cutting off of my tomato plant. OMG! I couldn't believe how huge that plant got! Of course now colored totes are not available at our Walmart, only the clear ones.
Honestly love your channel. You make everything doable. I bought a soldering iron after i watched your vids...its fantastic quick and easy way to make holes in tubs. Looking forward to your next vids❤❤
Thank You for you video. Living in an apartment it's hard to have a garden after seeing your video, I bought 6 totes at 8 dollars each at walmart now I need soil to get started. I can't wait fresh vegies are so expensive now.
I like the idea of a chair garden - and I already have a bunch of them! I use a stool to sit on in the flower bed. I Both my shoulders are replaced and I want to make it as easy on myself as possible. The chairs are ideal. Thank you for the information!
To fill deep raised beds, lay a layer of broken up or mulched tree branches.. leaves that are shredded, clippings,,soak it all, then get about 9 inches of dirt on top. This matter will create a natural biome, invite worms, ECT,. Decompose as time goes by, the branches I use are already at the rot stage, I live near woods, and I make piles as they fall, as trees die and fall, add leaves and let compost. It saves big bucks on soil.
OMG, Why didn't I think of this? I have so many totes in my shed I decided to use them for potatoes. Duh!!! I am tired of buying more wood that rots. I am going to do this because I was going to use containers anyway. I almost bought a bunch of 10 gallon ones. Now I can buy the large totes for the same cost ... Girl you just fixed everything for me. I am off the Walmart... I have been subscribed to your forever when was I going to figure this out.??? Thank you!!!!!!!
You truly inspired me to get the large storage container for growing food I really love and see clearly the benefits and going to check them out thanks for sharing!
I'm so glad! So worth a try, I love how I can PACE my containers as needed, which SAVES ON EXPENSIVE soil, use that soil on the top of the containers, and fill the base of the totes with cheap (great stuff) like leaves and garden matter, THANKS, Robbie
Thank you so much this removed my concerns about growing in plastic 😃 such wonderful information and I’ll be growing in them myself too. I really love the idea of having them in the chairs which would make it so much easier on my back! Thanks again! 😊💖
Just what I needed. thank you Robbie for talking about totes and the quality of each one as you and I will prep another growing season & for the long hot summer from top to bottom excellent!💓🇺🇸🇨🇦🧉🍵
Though I knew some of these things.....I am glad that I listened to your video!!! I may not or maybe.....be able to plant again.....where I live, but I so enjoyed the sweet conversation of successful planting in containers!! Your video lifted ME!! Ahna
So valuable, I'm in an apartment and have to container garden . My plants are root bound from pots not big enough! I have problems with bugs most of all so I'm thinking of ways to work that out ..So next year I'm going to be using Totes and Tulle🌺🌱🌿🏵️🍀🌷🌸☘️💮🌱🌾🥀 I'm a new subscriber also, you came up in my recommended I'm so glad I found you!!
Here in NM, the wind is so strong this year that the chairs won't work. However, I have my totes on wood pallets- air circulation and the wind won't affect it. i also pick up the big round 18 gallon tubs with handles- I've grown fruit trees in those. I use square foot gardening methods and have a massive amount of food to harvest.
We just had 6 #5 Sterlites on Walmart for 30 bucks!! So I got some! Yeah! I usually miss that sort of bargain...they had actually sold out in our area but I'd already ordered so they sent me some from Texas.
That is so cool, crazy cheap, and just think of all the wonderful stuff you are going to grow, at YOUR pace....as you set them up, one at a time. Thanks for sharing! Take care!
Well Done! ...so practical and efficient. I'm into container gardening and I make cement risers to elevate them. Very rewarding results. Thankyou for your great video and Best Wishes to you.and your family.
Genius!! Totes! I have some in my basement! Im so excited, funds are very limited right now so no raised beds for me . And i dont have a tiller so totes it is! Thank you!😀
I will start my HERB your way. Thank you very much. It would be wonderful if Seniors Res. would have these. for all who can no longer get on their knees. Northeast PA.☘
Robbie you were my saviour during the winter, I have watched all your videos over and over again! 😊 we will be going into spring soon and I will be copying all your ideas, take care and stay safe
Thank you, I wanted to do this even saved totes from the landfill, but hesitated as I live in Canada I am disabled and I love to garden I am going to do this this summer,.
I can't afford the totes, they are $ 7.99 each. I ask my neighbor's for cattle mineral half barrels. He gave me 9 of them. I also bought at dollar general, the large pots. I'm still looking for more large containers. This yr, I'll be raking all leaves. I have many maple trees. Shredding my newspaper that my other neighbor saves for me. I'll be adding crushed egg shells, but no food that has a strong smell. The racoons will dig it up, if they smell food. Thanks, Robbie.
I get my totes these days from Walmart for $4.98, with my grocery delivery, in fact with all we are growing now, it seems I am buying mainly things like totes, and a few things like cheese or daily, we have no cows or goats (yet) LOL. I use to get the totes are thrift stores for like $2-3, but lately we are staying close to home, so this works for us. You could still save the food scraps and keep them for now in a well covered container, I have videos on that too. Sounds great what you are doing, start slow and let it works out what works best for you, thanks, Robbie
@@gardenineden I have never seen totes at my thrift stores. I have tried Fb marketplace, but they are either top expensive or too far away to go get them. I'll just keep looking. Thank you
@@judya.shroads8245 I find good deals from neighbors on the Next Door app. Have you tried looking for totes there? All my large planters came from neighbor listings on Nextdoor.
Look for Holiday colored totes at mark down time. In 2019 I got four 18 gallon orange totes with black lids on clearance for less than $5. Right place at the right time. Still trying to replicate that.
Thank you very much for teaching on totes. Here is Hawaii it's gets very hot and with a small property these totes are the amswer especially with our busy lives now days. This is a " can do" one tote as a time. Love it!
Thank you. I have three 18 gal totes full of compost. Have had good luck with grow bags and promix but going to start adding totes. Think I will prefer their shape. Experimented with hugelkultur in one grow bag this year. Took less soil that way and my plant did wonderful so will try more of that next year.
Hi Robbie & Gary I love your ideas. You gave me motivation to start our very first garden. Thank you. I know you are busy but believe me keep up the great work. You have giving so many people your energy to grow your own. I have learned so much and starting to see results from using bins. Still learning but loving it.
Thanks you for the Ideas, i been searching how to make a high rise garden in a low budget. Tote's really is a good idea, I do have some totes setting in the garage.. Thank you for the brilliant ideas. Have a wonderful day
I got some food grade 55 gallon barrels and cut them in half. I put the drain holes about 1.5" up from bottom so it would retain some water. I first tried grow bags in them, but got concerned about the bag rotting. Ultimately, i put small branches and leaves in bottom and compost - soil- peat mix in top half. We have so many voles and moles in the yard, it seemed the only way i was going to protect produce from rodents. Since we are working from home still, i am looking forward to doing a garden with food this year. I usually do flowers.
Great research on plastic: ua-cam.com/video/oACuZNDXMWs/v-deo.html

I grow in the ground in my front yard for my tomatoes and they grew to about 10 foot tall last year. And so did my front yard cucumber. My pepper plants did really well the year before. We will see this year how it goes... What kind of plant food do you recommend????
I make my own compost tea, check out my videos on them thanks

What do you grow in the buckets please
@@ElizabethPerez-dn3pi Last year I grew tomatoes, I also had a fig and blueberry bush, I grew everything else in 18 gallon totes.
Thank you
I'm starting to use the 5 gallon buckets. I thought I was the only one to use those✌
Hi Robbie, thanks so much for your videos.
God bless her!
I hope your mom is alive and well 🙏 God bless
God Bless her! Happy gardening.
Can't wait to have a much more economic and fruitful season this year 😁
Wow! This was such a good lesson! You and your husband are the Johnny Appleseeds of 2020...planting new gardeners around the world! Thanks Robbie!🙂
At 63 years old I LOVE this idea!!!
I'm 72 and love it more!!!

Not only are they so easy to grow in, it works Great too, take care, thanks, Robbie
Bought 6 totes today at Walmart & I’m sure I have more lying around at home! So excited to get started slowly and get my kids involved 🥰
Throw in some worms, and a cover crop and top it off with some straw for shade because wigglers don't like sun. Not a a lot of worms because they will multiply in no time
How was your garden?
I bought me a soldering iron last week. I already love this tool. It’s so handy if you don’t need a drill. Thanks for the great idea!! You are an inspiration!!!
What part talks about that?

Watching your videos makes me so happy. I also love gardening in totes and containers. My husband is an "in the ground" gardener but he's supportive of my container style and very impressed with the successes I've had with my crops. I LOVE your videos and your personality...please never stop!!
Oh I was blessed I got 5 cubit feet of Miracle grow in ground potting soil for free! The bags were torn and they just wanted them gone 👍🏼
My bff Michele STILL has summer squash growing strong in her totes!
@@jules-marcdavis6843 Make sure you check the # on the toy bucket.

love your idea of planting something next to the containers so that plants can be watered from the containers!!

Every time I watch your videos, my gardening passion gets more and more
2 piece of advice.
Who could downvote this?
This WORKS!
Paint them - Robbie has a video on it & at that stage is perfect time to do when paint is deteriorating

I was using that tote already for 3 months, and it was so fabulous.
Wonderful I love them 😊❤️
Very informative video, exactly as you said - just grow something! Usually you start with few plants and end up with not having enough space because you want to grow more plants 🍀
Absolutely! Yes, it GROWS on You...LOL, thanks take care Robbie
Good morning from Houston Texas USA. Thank you for sharing
I can envision an addition to your chair garden in the form of another row of chairs - it would look something like an orchestra pit. :-)
I love it!
Musical Chairs to the sound of Mother Nature.
I was thinking 2 rows of chairs, back to back like "Musical Chairs"..

Great information Robbie!! If you don't have chairs.... you could possibly fill a tote with wood chips and place another tote on top to bring it up higher.... although a chair would probably be better support. I love your videos and your positive energy!! Thanks for sharing!!

Hello from a fellow Hoosier! I live in Arkansas now, but grew up near Bedford. Happy gardening!
Wow, thank you! This makes my DAY, Week, NO YEAR! Thanks so much, take care, Robbie and Gary too!
What is a scrap compost used for? And how are tote lids used?

May I ask what she uses the Tote lids for that you are keeping them?
Love the Chair garden idea.
Square containers much better than 5 gal bucket. 😻

Experimented with hugelkultur in one grow bag this year. Took less soil that way and my plant did wonderful so will try more of that next year.
Hi Robbie & Gary
I love your ideas. You gave me motivation to start our very first garden. Thank you. I know you are busy but believe me keep up the great work. You have giving so many people your energy to grow your own. I have learned so much and starting to see results from using bins. Still learning but loving it.
Wow!!! I am so excited to try this!!! Thank you!!!!
Our town used to have totes for recyclables. They don't use this method anymore so I am now planting tomatoes and peppers in them.
Thanks you for the Ideas, i been searching how to make a high rise garden in a low budget. Tote's really is a good idea, I do have some totes setting in the garage.. Thank you for the brilliant ideas. Have a wonderful day
Robbie my boyfriend just started his first tote today. Thank you! Giggles!
Sounds great, sounds perfect 😊❤️
