Dear lady, you are a national treasure. The 99% of us, who are poor, but still want our own gardens, can do this. You explained this so wonderfully and you speak to those of us, who must live frugally by absolute necessity. God bless you wonderful lady. You have changed lives by this video. Do you also have a video on how to winterize the totes. I live in the midwest and we got 10" of snow last year. I want to grow all year round and I'm wondering how to protect the plants from extreme cold and snow.
Great!!!!!! I have another video (I HOPE SOON) coming out as to all the things I am now doing with the lids....in the garden, I did something very similar to yours, Great Minds Think Alike, thanks so much, take care, Robbie
I came up with this on my own a year ago April 15th, after moving into a house in a community overrun with massive crabgrass! I unpacked all of my grey tubs, ordered 8 more from Walmart, drilled large holes in the borttoms, layered with 1" of rock, 2" of sand, & 2 types of soil. I grew a very lush green garden in the middle of the desert, & have already started replanting for this year! These tubs hold incredible moisture in the 114°-117° desert heat!
I have been using the big and med tree size nursery pots. I got a ton of them where I work... The landscape people left them so I told the boss I'd get rid of the "trash" 😁
🇬🇧 What I really like of Robbie's ideas is NOT to make holes in the bottom and the water drains out but to put them at least an inch up the sides to maintain a moisture reservoir.
Cannot thank you enough. For too many years to mention...my greatest wish (before I leave this earth), is to grow food so I may bless people. I always thought it was a costly venture, still do, but you have shown me...All things are possible! Accidentally saw your video. My dream was awakened upon watching you.
This is also an excellent method for renters and people who may have to move frequently. My husband is active duty Marine Corps, so we have to be ready to pick up and move pretty frequently. With this kind of container gardening we can take our garden with us and not have to lose out on the time and money we invested to grow our own food.
With todays INFLATION. The cost of veggjes is expensive! Thanks you for giving me ideas to go cheap. I like cheap...diy is my style. I'm also a dumpster diver. People throw away good stuff. Back to gardening... thanks again
I've been doing this for 2 years straight because my yard at my old house wasn't spacious enough. It's true. This is a great way to grow your food. My tomato's got so massive in these things. It was crazy! And I was thinking about buying raised garden beds for my new home's backyard, but after watching this...I'm gonna stick to what I know works and what's more affordable for me and my family.
You have convinced me!!!!! I am sold! I've been trying to figure out a way to conveniently start gardening and I think this is it for me! Thanks so much.
Wow! Am I glad I found this lady! I was looking around for a cheap and easy diy raised bed to build. I'm 71 with back surgeries, osteoporosis and past bone fractures, but I still want to grow herbs to start and some snow peas, beans, flowers and such. But I'm in Northwest Florida where it is hot, hot, hot in the summer. I'd like to see if I could buy those rolling totes so I could roll them around next year until I find the best place to put them -- half my yard is "mottled" shade. I'm a beginning gardener because I've finally retired and have time. Do you think the black totes with two wheels would make them too hot down here? Still trying to keep cost down - retired, single social workers do not have a lot of money -- at least I don't. I'm going to look at more of your videos for help. Thanks for posting this!! Also, is June too late to plant anything? We're in a drought here, so now that we're in hurricane season -- rain will come. I'm so excited! I have a BUNCH of yard debris in back of my old privacy fence where previous owners just threw their seasonal yard debris behing the fence. Can't afford to pay $600 quoted to me to clean that out and remove when I could recycle, too! Sorry for the lengthy post - sheltering in place by myself I sometimes blab too much for lack of company.
I too am 71 with osteoporosis and recovering from a femur fracture ! I too want to try this...but I'm in London with very mixed weather . Good luck with your veggies!
I don't know if this would work, but you could try taping (double-sided tape) aluminum foil to the outside of the totes to reflect sunlight. I find foil at my local dollar store, so it's cheap to buy. You can also get a pack of mylar foil, which is shiny and available at Amazon or some garden/greenhouse stores. Also, for a few dollars you can buy Krylon spray paint, which is made for plastics. If you get a light color, spray the bins any color you like, and keep the interior black.
@ Barnett Langford 👋☺️ I have used worn light colored cotton sheets or pillow cases (on smaller plastic coffee tubs) inside the tubs overlapping north-south and east-west...or outside over lapping inward. Filling with layered ingredients helped keep fabric in place. The light colors reflect the sun. I recycle what can't be reused and they compost lovely ( natural fibers) when I want a New Look🤗 I just switch them out. I was so pleased with myself...the results when I used the small floral printed sheets..it made an ordinarily bland yard very colorful ☺️💜✝️💜 My adult children giggled, "Okay mom..too much time on your hands, huh?!" 💜✝️💜

I will start my fall vegetables. That's for the money saving ways I don't have to buy expensive potting soil and how to compost in place. Again you are a blessing.

Perfect for seniors. No back issues and should conserve water. I love the chairs planted in between the totes! The scraps should make this taste great!!!
I'm saving this! I love your layering technique. I have 8 plastic totes arriving today. I have 5 used ones given to me, so I already started. But I cant wait to get more planted. You have inspired me to grow more food. I cant bend to the ground so these totes on shelving or a table work great!
Love this. I’m disabled and can’t get in to dig and till like I did 20-30 years ago! Only thing different I might do is make a cinderblock and board riser to put them on

In a rectangular shape, then planted right into the top. Love your compact version!! Thanks for the great video 🌱💚

Oh my goodness! THANKS. I’m trying to start a little herb/flower business & grow some fresh food for our family. I was stumped financially about planters. This is genius truly & i already have alot to get started with from my last move. THANK YOU.
I just remember something that I did 40 years ago. I started my first garden back then and I had Rodale gardening magazines and I learned alot from the magazines were great to read and it said go to the woods and dig up some top soil as it is very rich soil as the leaves were decomposed over the years. My garden loved that top soil, very rich that I got from the woods.
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Robbie and Gary, We have raccoons in our area. They will eat anything. Any suggestions on how to keep them out of these totes?
This will be awesome to try out this year. I'm in Minnesota & just a couple of miles from the Mississippi River. There used to be a Lot of industrial companies that once allowed to dump anything anywhere. So I honestly don't trust the soil to be clean enough to grow anything edible. With the way things are going in this country I feel it's very important that us Americans learn to become more self sufficient if we hope to survive. Our government is not going to look out for us, we will need to band together, and help all our brothers & sisters. Happy growing to All!!!
Finally! I have a use for some types with cracked bottoms. I've been wanting to put in a raised bed since I have mobility issues. This is a perfect solution.
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy I'm sure that it will. I'm nearing retirement age and can no longer garden the traditional way of planting directly in the ground. I am so glad to have found this video in my suggested videos feed.
Save those lids. You can use them for smaller pots that drain. When you water the plants inside the lids, if you put too much water in, it will overflow the lid and keep a small amount of water at the bottom. Lids are great for seedling starter pots to sit in. And Robbie, please, what a great solar fountain the lid would be. The birds could really get in there and take a bath.
Yes everything has a purpose and Can be repurposed I am using recycled Kiddy pools and truck tires in my backyard to garden in anything that will Hold dirt will work 😁
@@rubmyducky100 I look at everything as a possible container now! It's interesting to look at Robbie's videos and notice all the containers she has amongst the totes. Good luck with your garden!
I love watching your videos. I took up gardening last year. I've never had a green thumb in my life but your videos give me inspiration and motivation.
You are god sent !! Thank you ! I have been looking for this reassurance. I did buy 1 keter raised bed but I didn’t want to spend another $100 on a second one but I have a ton of there bins from my move and now I can make more garden beds ! Thank you !!
When I lost my pine tree this year, I didn’t realize the previous owner had put 2” of soil over a sheet of plastic to keep the weeds down in the area surrounding the tree. This will make the perfect setting for these totes! Thank you for the inspiration!
I have clay dirt and I have been sad because I have not been able to garden for the last 10 years. This gives me hope and I just went out and bought some plants! Thank you for this fabulous information!
I love to garden and have medical issues but you have inspired me so much. I definitely will try this. Thank you! I was willing to spend a little fortune. Also to pretty them up I can buy dollar store fencing. Cool!
I made a raised bed for 58 bucks with off cuts from Lowe's. Everything that doesn't fit goes into totes. I have been gardening for 5 years and you helped me realize I need holes on the side. Thanks for this video!
Thank you so much for this video!!!!!! It has answered so many questions I have about using plastic containers for raised beds. Very simple and convenient!
I started doing this a few years ago for my little girl for her own ‘little’ garden.. but all the EXTRA INFO you give about the soil will help us TREMENDOUSLY!!
I learned tons, love your sweet personality and you made everything so "user friendly"!!! Love your enthusiasm!!!💯😁 Be well and thank you very much!!!😊
Sterilite is an amazing company and always donated to our local community college and helped us with community projects but never wanted to be in the press about it. They made sure the focus was always on the organization rather than their company. Absolutely love this company!
Oh wow thank you for sharing that. I have called and spoken to them and they are so nice. I asked them once about the colors they come out with and why sometimes they are so cheap, and that’s because it was a special order maybe a college color or some thing and then later they sell off those colors at a really good price. Right now they have these red ones that are like an eggplant color for something like $52 for eight of them and they’re beautiful. Thank you for sharing this thank you so much ❤️😊 and they are an American Company made here in the USA 🇺🇸
New subscriber here. I just bought these totes for the same purpose you talked about. They’re $4.75 at big lots. I like your tips. There’s tons of gardening channels out there but I think you’re practical and useful.
THANK YOU! I live in a small city and now have 1 raised bed and 16 TOTES! I love this way of gardening and I don't have to get on my knees, plus using the tulle, I haven't had any problems with the rabbits or squirrels - Having fun. Also made a fountain.
I've been container, or at the very least, a bucket grower for years. As with a lot of gardening, there could be hit or miss years. I've used these tubs for so many things and cheaper buckets at Walmart also, but our harsh climate in Kansas can wreak havoc on plastics. If I get 3 years of usage out of them for gardening, I'm ahead. But I never thought of them as possible raised beds. What an eye opener. I watch a lot of videos to discover new tricks for this old dog to learn. I really have learned a lot of new tricks and apply them to my day. Thank you for another one. 😉
WONDERFUL!!! Thank you so much! The perfect answer for 2 senior sisters. I’ll build them for my handicapped sister. She’ll flip! Perfect, perfect, perfect. I can’t thank you enough😘😘😘
Thank you for the info on filling the container I grew a ton of ginger in one in Louisiana with holes on the bottom and sides I like your idea of holes on one side. Thanks again will be subscribing.

That is awesome! Here I just create my own, take care, Robbie
When I did that, the soil had some kinds of mold in it that harmed my plants.
This is brilliant! My kids have wanted to start gardening but our yard is full of gophers so this will be great for them to try!!
Thank you!!!
We have gophers here too, and you are right, they can not get into the totes...Thanks and take care, Robbie
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Robbie and Gary, We have raccoons in our area. They will eat anything. Any suggestions on how to keep them out of these totes?
Love you Robin. So down to earth and enthusiastic!
This should work perfect for you 😊❤️
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy I'm sure that it will.
I use the lids all the time for putting the starter seed pots on
Yes everything has a purpose and Can be repurposed I am using recycled Kiddy pools and truck tires in my backyard to garden in anything that will Hold dirt will work 😁
@@rubmyducky100 I look at everything as a possible container now! It's interesting to look at Robbie's videos and notice all the containers she has amongst the totes. Good luck with your garden!
I love watching your videos. I took up gardening last year. I've never had a green thumb in my life but your videos give me inspiration and motivation.
Yay! Robbie I’m in Delaware. Not as warm as California but we have sun and totes!
You are god sent !! Thank you ! I have been looking for this reassurance. I did buy 1 keter raised bed but I didn’t want to spend another $100 on a second one but I have a ton of there bins from my move and now I can make more garden beds ! Thank you !!
Wonderful! That will be perfect ❤️
I started listening to you and I thought it was Martha Stewart by your voice 💗
I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one to say “critters” Thanks for the good ideas 😎
When I lost my pine tree this year, I didn’t realize the previous owner had put 2” of soil over a sheet of plastic to keep the weeds down in the area surrounding the tree. This will make the perfect setting for these totes! Thank you for the inspiration!
Ms. Robbie you are a true blessing, thank you for all the ideals and I love your garden. Take care and stay safe.
Love this. Practical and to the point. No blah blah blah.
Oh My, Thank you
I STARTED TO DO THIS TOO, IT'S GREAT!! IT ALSO HELPS SAVE SPACE AND YOU CAN GROW ALOT MORE FOOD THIS WAY. GREAT INFORMATION AND GREAT VIDEO!!
Thank u dear lady I love your teaching may God bless u for chairing your knowledge with us
I have clay dirt and I have been sad because I have not been able to garden for the last 10 years. This gives me hope and I just went out and bought some plants! Thank you for this fabulous information!
Another reason for putting your holes on the side is to help keep down the weeds from trying to grow up from the bottom through the holes
This was a VERY GOOD detailed teaching. Thank you and God Bless!
This is SO much easier than traditional gardening!!
Thanks❤
I love to garden and have medical issues but you have inspired me so much. I definitely will try this. Thank you! I was willing to spend a little fortune. Also to pretty them up I can buy dollar store fencing. Cool!
I made a raised bed for 58 bucks with off cuts from Lowe's. Everything that doesn't fit goes into totes. I have been gardening for 5 years and you helped me realize I need holes on the side. Thanks for this video!
I've gardening , do it for years but never raised bed love your idea will try it this year thanks for the idea.
Love your enthusiasm!!!💯😁
Be well and thank you very much!!!😊
Just loved your video, watching you give a genuine education. Already motivated to try this out. Thank you and God bless you.
Fantastic! I just had the idea to use these containers, & saw your video, reinforcing the idea! Thanks!
Works perfect, check out all my other videos and you will see how great everything grows, and how to set them up, thanks
You Lady, are AMAZING!!!! I'm subbing to your channel!! You're a Godsend right now. Thank you so, so much!!
Thanks for subbing! Once you start growing in totes, you will love them! SO much more control with them, enjoy, thanks so much, Robbie
Loved your tips! I bought two bins like these for 5.99 yesterday. You're so helpful!
This was a great video and I like how you incorporated multiple ways to make it less expensive
THANK YOU! I live in a small city and now have 1 raised bed and 16 TOTES! I love this way of gardening and I don't have to get on my knees, plus using the tulle, I haven't had any problems with the rabbits or squirrels - Having fun. Also made a fountain.
tulle fabric? the kind that makes tutus?
I've been container, or at the very least, a bucket grower for years. As with a lot of gardening, there could be hit or miss years. I've used these tubs for so many things and cheaper buckets at Walmart also, but our harsh climate in Kansas can wreak havoc on plastics. If I get 3 years of usage out of them for gardening, I'm ahead. But I never thought of them as possible raised beds. What an eye opener.
I watch a lot of videos to discover new tricks for this old dog to learn. I really have learned a lot of new tricks and apply them to my day. Thank you for another one. 😉
Thank you so much we are starting a garden with totes! I’m so excited this video was great.
Gosh, your tips are so awesome. I wish I had seen this video early. Love your tips and ideas!
You inspired me to have a garden like you do. My husband is even onboard and helping out with it.
WONDERFUL!!! Thank you so much! The perfect answer for 2 senior sisters. I’ll build them for my handicapped sister. She’ll flip! Perfect, perfect, perfect. I can’t thank you enough😘😘😘
