Make sure your totes have a 2 or 5 on the bottom which means they are safe to grow or store foods in. Any other numbers mean the totes are made from chemical recycles that can be absorbed into the soil which will transfer into your food plants and in your produce that you eat. By the way, Your little one is absolutely adorable!
1, 2, 4, and 5 are considered food grade. You want to avoid 3 or any other container without any number at all i.e., Dollar Store buckets and plant pots. My 18-gal Sterilite totes are a 5.
How refreshing to see my people super self sufficient and cost effective is always appreciated 😊 I am starting a balcony grow. Good luck everyone HAPPY HARVEST
Amen, Sis ❤ I've started mine from store bought bell pepper and mini sweet pepper (seeds). I'm definitely trying the bin raised bed method he's using in this video. Congrats on your balcony vegetable garden! Happy Harvesting, Sis ❤🖤💚💛
Out of all my researching for new beginners in raised flower beds, this was by far the most informative and adorable. I found myself watching the baby enjoying nature and not electronics. No editing needed. Love this!! Peace and love to you and your family. Thanks for sharing as this will help my journey as I begin this week.
I've gardened for many years. With the world in such a crazy state, I'm going to try 4-6 totes of veggies and share with my elderly neighbors next door. I had a dying tree taken down in the front yard before the snows came this past winter. I'm going to use some of those fresh wood chips to partially fill the totes. Last year my dogs ate tomatoes, peppers and strawberries I grew in the yard ! Now the totes can go in the sunny front yard so the harvest will be people food. 😊 Thank .you for your inexpensive ideas. Your little one is adorbs!! Peace to all from Buffalo, NY.
Community gardens would be even more useful than the grassy parks covering sections of a town or city. Maybe those with a lower income can pay less or nothing to rent a square of the community garden. I'm not sure how it works because my own small town lacks one, but I know they exist elsewhere.
That was a beautiful moment with your daughter. If you teach her while she is young, you will have a love of gardening together and fresh food all your life.
Yes - I'm using those this year. I've also added kitchen scraps to the mix before adding the potting soil. I have mine on blocks and/or bricks to help raise them up some. It's easier on my back. There are also lots of things that can be done with the lids. Your 'helper' is a real cutie!
Hello I don’t know what to do with my lids I am all knew to gardening I would love any other help thank you I didn’t know you could even use totes to grow vegetables in
@@shallowphatgal Great idea. I need lids for several containers I actually use for storage. Some people throw away containers that lack a lid, so that's another idea--asking around or actually "dumpster diving."
I'm a tote grower and this is AWESOME! Never thought to use the refuse to reduce soil cost. I have native soil as well but I still buy container soil and it is costly. You just saved me a bundle! Brilliant.
Your daughter made my day. Family is a beautiful thing. You definitely made this look easy. You answered my question, holes on the side. I never thought of mulch in the bottom. Thank you
I learned a lot from this (fill 3/4 full with clean debris! Mix native with purchased soil!) and love the way you and your child(ren) interact: Subscribed! Beets and ginger are two of my favorites so I will see if they are companion plants. Condo dweller, so very interested in the tower video. Thank you!
I do use totes but had never thought to reduce the amount of soil. Your method is a big game changer. I make a lot of my own compost and then have to buy some in. This year for whatever reason bags of compost have doubled in price in Ireland and reckoned I would have to reduce the crops I was going to grow. Now I won't have to, many thanks for the tip.
Thank you so much. I saw some totes yesterday at the store, On Sale. So I looked for your video, and learned how easy it can be. Today I will go back and get a few. Your toddler, so cute!
I have been clearing my storage unit and plan to use those totes up on old patio chairs for a raised bed garden. Just researching what layers go into it. Starting small (2 totes).
I’m glad your video popped up. I love this idea. Now I’m not so intimidated of “gardening” because you shown me how to start small. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to more videos.
Good idea with the tote filler. I’m growing veggies in kiddie swimming pools and big flower pots. I have a lot of totes already so I will be using them also. Your baby is precious. She got me when she said “Ok daddy.”
Super idea! Thank you for this! Your little helper is so dang cute!!!! I'm a grandma, so I know cute when I see it! So glad I found your channel and look forward to more great videos from you!
I just found this guy. I would thank him. His little handsome man should have had just a little box beside him to help mix. Daddy took the fun out. Lol. Love, peace to all.
New Subscriber, I have about 16 of those totes from my move & would’ve never thought to use them like this. Thanks for the tips & we will be doing us some raised gardens as I just got my seeds. Much success to your channel & look forward to more awesome content.
Brilliant , Were in the UK, not much garden ,and my husband suggested these boxes ect for me ,as I carnt do a lot ,through illnesses , These are just enough for us ,so glad I came across u , I love any thing garden , And seeing ur beautiful little one made me smile , So so adorable
Thank you Sir for a instructional video to speak to those of us that are apartment dwelling and these containers are a perfect solution. Your interaction with the baby is precious...it's a good way to get children involved so when the harvest comes...watch out 😊
What a precious little helper you have!! I live in POLK County Florida and wanted to remind you that mid summer till Fall, it is difficult to find Totes in any stores cause kids are packing up for college, schools and universities. When my daughter was headed to FSU, Tallahassee 3 years ago, we couldn't find a tote in any Walmart...so shop early!! Good luck with your beautiful garden..
With the composting material, something I learned doing the very same thing, is that some plants do like a deeper depth of soil for their roots. I learned the hard way that plants like pumpkins, watermelon, tomatoes, winter squash and sweet potatoes all like 24+ inches of soil to grow in. I’m in New Mexico and have found tubs a great addition to my garden.
I am just beginning to grow gardens in the community, and I was sold on just raised beds. This is such a great idea. Bless up to you and wife. Pls continue to teach.
This was my first time watching. I love your video. I love how you do these things! but, I love the baby. He steals the show. almost. Peace be with you.
great video. The real star is Kendall. Sorry ... Teach them young..memories of a lifetime. I don't remember a lot of things but when it comes to gardening I remember those days with Grandma.
Good tip about knowing your area. I'm in AZ, so it's already too late to do some things, but maybe in containers so I can move them around, I can keep moving my plants to a cooler partially shady spot in the afternoon. That means getting up early which isn't my thing, but if I want a garden, this girl has to change her ways. Hey, like your video, especially the music. That is what kept me around. That music woke my me up. Thanks.
thank you. very nice helpful information, and well done video. And sweet, beautiful daughter. Love, from an 80 year old great granny in snowy, cold Montana.
Great video ! Yes watch Robbie and Garry videos ! They are are a hoot and so exciting in their garden ! ! All the best to you ! Please keep teaching and leaning through out your life !😍🤓🙏🏼💕! You are both lucky to live in warm weather area ! I live in Cleveland Ohio! Yikes 🙄! It’s still cold here in April 5th ! Praying for warm weather 😍😍😍
I live in Cleveland Ohio as well and the weather keeps going up and down. I'm going to try to start planting around the end of April. We should be clear from the freezing temperatures by then 🤞🏼
Hi today is the first time seeing your beautiful video. So far I love the idea..using the totes.. I love the way your first layer consisted of twigs..ochre branches etc.. Thank you so much..This is my second year planting a garden.. I have learnt lot from other gardening shows..Thanks.. God Bless!🙏🥰🇨🇦
Keep up the good work and educating people about growing food. I used to have a half acre truck garden in Missoula, Montana. Now I'm 80, on my own, and have a tiny space at my apartment complex. I live at over 6,000 ft. elevation, in a high mountain valley... where it gets routinely 40 below zero in eight months - long winters, where the ground is frozen solid until May.
hello i just found your channel but i wanted to tell you one thing. thank you i work with children and i see so often fathers absent frim a child's life. it us encouraging to see a daughter that loves her dad and the father includes his daughter in his life.
Yes!!! I found quite a few thrift stores and grew beans, asparagus, melons, etc in totes, they work. Only issue I encountered is after sitting for a winter or so they start to become brittle, then will crack easy if moved.
hahahahahahaha....the last part though! That was great! Thank you for NOT editing that out...was funny. Baby, then Mommy...then your reactions....hilarious and so sweet.

I still think I'd wash it first. Thanks for the plastic numbers to use.
thanks for the tip!
Yes thank you for that important suggestion!
Love seeing father teaching his babies the importance of self sufficiency! ❤
Love the little baby gardener that you are growing. She will be a great gardener when she gets a little older.
I knooow, what a doll! And so sweet and trying to help!
The minute the baby came in I had to subscribe!
Came for tote gardening. Stayed for the little one with bear ears. 👍
You are instilling respect for nature in your adorable little girl. She is a little doll!
I sm 70 year old womsn who will be trying this for my late start up veggie 10:34 garden. Wish me well.

@@NormieNeko one of the best ideas I’ve ever come across. Not only low cost, but teach people self sufficiency. Government would not like that though.
This post made me laugh because our Rottweiler feasted on our garden as well 😂
Please be kind and feed your dogs proper dog food and stop being so darn cheap! They shouldn't have to live like savages. 😢
When you said “Here in Florida” I had such a relief 😅
Your child is such a good helper - you must be so proud! 😊
The babies are cute ❤❤❤came for the knowledge and stayed for them!
I love how your lil baby is involved, this is super meaningful activity for little ones to observe and participate in. 💕
She's adorable. Helping her daddy. The totes are an awesome idea!!!
Yes but look for beat up ones at thrift stores . Use your old ugly ones n put that new one inside .😅
That was a beautiful moment with your daughter. If you teach her while she is young, you will have a love of gardening together and fresh food all your life.
The reduction in soil is a game changer. Starting on my balcony and indoors!
I like this because I want my garden to save me money not make me broke. ✌️ Will have to try this.
Use old totes
