- Welcome back to Hearts of Iron 4, today I'll be playing as a nation I haven't tried in years, Japan. and Japan needs a new update in HOI4. Most of the old focus trees seem a bit bare now. Let's see what we can do!

South Africa next decent focus tree
The new Super Japan is very easy like the old one. @Antasil made a wonderful video showing the new strat of declaring on Republican Spain in the Civil War and Naval invade UK through Nationalist Spain once you get Mill access. You can then do the same old strat and get all the Allies on top of half of Spain since they don’t win it in the Civil war and somehow get Ethiopia bc they join the Allies. Make sure to declare on Netherlands before the end of the war to get the rest of the Indies. After the allies are out you blitz US through Canada and invade Florida and bam. That’s the game. Now you can take China ez with a larger military and 2 majors infrastructure.

If we don’t get a South American or Scandinavian DLC next, I would love to see an Asia rework DLC. Japan is really good, but it is a bit out of touch. I would love to see the minors in Asia fleshed out.
Or maybe a middle eastern/ islamic expansion with like saudi arabia yemen iraq iran etc

Seriously it’s fucking stupid your all asking for a rework of a dlc to be an dlc, the vast disconnect between mechanics for countries and trees due to DLC is a clear example of PDXs dlc policy absolutely failing for this game
We shouldn't have to pay more money for DLC that older DLC should already deal with. The waking the Tiger DLC was suppossed to be the East Asian DLC. We've already payed to make that region better. Paradox should be revisiting their old DLC and updating that.

A lot of nations need at least a minor update… Romania’s focus tree still gives you research bonuses for fighters and cas (things that no longer exist in the tech tree)
They’re just given as small airframe bonuses, meaning air research bonus focuses are just generally more applicable rn. You could get a “heavy fighter” research bonus with full intent of only using medium airframes to make bombers

Every plane research gives a bonus for the frames.
CAS and fighters give a bonus to small airframes.
Tac gives a boost to medium airframes.
And Strategic gives a boost to large airframes.
@@TMG-Germany Was it though? The focus says specifically fighter in its effects, not small airframe. Also, why would there still be two separate focuses if they give bonuses for the same tech?
Germany will soon need an update or a more modern focus tree, you can make interesting alternative fascists ways such as the Himmler or Goebbels the government Coupé , a communist focus path, of course, where you can take different people like Ernst Thälmann or Walter Ulbricht, then a military dictatorship where generals can rule the state such as Erwin Rommel or Erwin von Witzleben

My fav strat as Japan is a-historical. Early war with Netherlands, take Indonesia and the Caribbean colonies. Use them to early war USA, then you are free to conquer China with no worries. Sometimes also an early war with France to take their East Asian colonies and some in Africa

Need more minor focus trees. Honestly having one type of generic tree per region would be an awesome update
No, not really. Complicating unnecessary countries just slows the game down even more. I’d say the northern countries need focuses, but other than that, ehhh. Like i do not want south america focuses unless they are all identical and about as in depth as the new generic africa tree. Switzerland having a focus tree is just silly, and in 99% of games only serves to increase the global division count by like 50 late game.
Minor focus trees are irrelevant and will do very little to change the game. What can Nepal or some random country like Yemen do to influence the main point of the game which is WW2? It can’t do anything differently than other countries in the region who actually do have focus trees.
Waking The Tiger Fixes, I think this should be an update for owner of the DLC.
Japan:
- Bring the historical focus up to the standard of recent DLCs. Option to get 'instant puppet' decision like Germany can on occupied European colonies (India, Pakistan, Burma, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, The Pacific States, etc). Also please add an option to force Manchukuo to core China.
- Alternate fascist path, probably Asian Superiority or something that attempts to turn everyone nearby fascist and start uprising on European colonies.
- Non-aligned path not only need a rework, but they wasted their chance there to not split it into two different trees rather than one that connect with each other immediately. The Shogunate path can turn alternate Democratic at the end like Italy would be a good idea too. For Empire path maybe a peaceful but longer way to get Puyi to take over China, then can go Asian Superiority war against European powers.
- Option to start anti-colonial uprising in Asia as both Communist and Democratic similar to Ethiopia.
- Please add that guy from Letters from Iwo Jima as a starting general (Starting perks: Inflexible Strategist, Cautious).
China and Warlords:
- Proper way to turn Democratic, also please add more Democratic leaders options.
- Wang Jingwei path (pro-Japanese fascist)
- Blue Shirt Society path (anti-Japanese fascist)
- Unique focus and national spirits for Reorganized Government of China like Vichy France or Italian Social Republic.
- Restore the Qing as China and allow Puyi to take power (non-aligned or fascist)
- Restore the Ming or Jin (depends on which warlord)
- More Starting generals please
Manchukuo:
- Obedience path need a big fix, that one national spirit needs to be removed on way or another
- Maybe an option to do your own subversion on China and take them over this way
- Option to turn non-aligned after breaking free from Japan (the Five People Army path of the focus should turn Manchukuo non-aligned)
- Democratic and Communist path
Mongolia:
- No focus tree, but please allow restoration of the Mongol Empire and Yuan Dynasty.
So I really actually like to play as Japan, the only downside being the inability to capitulate allies early (in newer patches Germany won't accept you into faction because distance), or reach the US without doing some kind of *a cheese*, while the US owns multiple islands literally next to your homelands, but I guess that's historical. The way you play as Japan, people, is you rush illusive gentleman, as well as getting second spy, and start doing collabs as soon as you can, get all the marine divisions you can (4), then use them to naval invade Qingdao and Shanghai (around these areas), use spare 15 stack of good infantry to naval invade with them, as well as 14 stack of different combined arms divs (horses, trucks and tanks.) The 24 and 6 bad divs can be put on Beijing front. Then you declare as soon as you can and start microing, while pressing "Escalate war in China". By the time debuff disappears, you should link Qingdao and Shanghai armies to encircle chinese group of armies in between them. Once 100% collabs are done, move spies to US of A and do collabs on them. Also ask El Salvador for docking rights. And justify on Mexico. Then you can battleplan China, they should be done in couple of weeks with massive Ichi Go buff. Overall you should kill China around december 1937 - january 1938. Maybe march if something would go wrong. Then just Naval Invade Mexico and abandon all islands in pacific, US will naval invade them and send half their army just to garrison all of them. You should have triple the amount of divisions. Once You capitulate mexico and push into US mainland, there is nothing they can do, they wouldn't even have enough divisions to put on the border. So just push in empty tiles and take cities. If possible, naval invade east coast since all VPs are there. Should be done late 1938 - early 1939 even before germany goes to poland. As a bonus, you can justify on Denmark while you are invading US, take Greenland and Iceland, then declare on allies. At that time u should have your + US navy, so HM fleet is not a danger to you, just naval invade Britain and France at the same time, and capitulate them even before Germany goes to Poland. At that point you own 80% of the world and there are only 2 strong countries left, being Germany and Soviet Union, but the USSR is a meme and you can easily take Germany while it tries to attack Poland. Very good. Very strong.
What do you do for the focus tree? The usual to get the nationalized state and then the marco polo incident or so you rush the marco polo first?

Since waking the tiger the china war has changed quite a bit.
Fisrt the collab government mechanic can be used to increse their bonkers 5℅ surrender limit.
A diversion naval invasion is also helpful after the first escalation to divide the front.
The interservice rivalry descisions has an option that gives 4 free mils and production boost but hinders the naval production. It can be turned back to balanced 6 moths later tho.
Also I like to use a couple of strong divisons to encircle and the reat re just to hold the line. Once enough chinese troops have been killed you should be able to push with the other units as well.
And I know that you don't like or cannot micro much, but it helps immensly

My prep is civies at home, mills in puppet territory.
Before the war I build a max port and rails in Hainan.
When the war starts I build some refineries for my airforce and keep the navy on strikeforce.
I get a collaboration government to cap them sooner.
The supply system really hurt Japan so I always get LVL 2 logistics companies asap.
I don't build planes until the Zero, the interservice rivalry help, 4 factory's for guns, prioritise naval air production, +2% conscription, special forces boost than I leave it at balanced.
I Also think it would be nice to see a update for the pacific nations, if it includes the whole pacific A new USA focus tree would be extremely nice.

Hey Alex, heres some basic tips for Japan, speaking from experience lmao
- The Manchurian project is not worth it at all. Manchukuo is practically useless, and any buffs you give them will be wasted when you could make much better use of those resources. Generally, you should be rushing towards spiritual mobilization, the recruitable pop is insane, before going to war.
- The focus "The zero" gives you a 1940 fighter for free. You should take that as fast as possible, it's much more important than the army buffs.
- You shouldn't be guarding your ports until America war. China is not going to naval invade you
- Most importantly, please, for the love of god, get at least 1-2 collaboration governments in china. It will make your life so much easier, I promise. If you do this, you can annex china and get so many factories and you wont have to walk to Chongqing.
Overall though, for a basically first playthrough this was great. Much better than mine lmao

I've always been fond of rushing spy network as Japan, then getting Collab on China. Also, waiting for the event instead of doing the Marco Polo bridge incident lets you avoid the debuffs, which really helps.

First off I take Siam as soon as I have the PP. Once the war with China starts I do *not* call in any puppets so I can keep the front very narrow. I use one army to slowly push to the river by Beijing then just hold it there while I finish the "escalate conflict" buttons, and naval invade 3 different ports (one by one using say 10 marines) with 1 army each. Mostly taking the beachhead and just letting China grind away at my guys while I focus on the next landing. Once the nerfs are gone then I slowly push at each front until they start linking up. China should have 10x as many casualties as Japan, maybe even more. Then when you get the final buff you can make quick work by pushing to the inland capital (forget it's name).
Then I queue up a ton of naval invasions to take the various US islands and hit the Philippines in late 1938 or 1939. Hopefully have time to take Hawaii before the Allies join in, but Dutch East Indies, Malaya, Australia and NZ are fairly easy and probably only needs 1 army while you use the rest to take out the Raj. Then when Asia is safe I do mass naval invasions of the US. I think Japan is one of the easiest world conquests even playing somewhat historically

Pre Barbarossa I usually had a ton of cavalry, and would launch four or five naval invasions along the coast. Beijing is an early encirclement opportunity, because if you attack Beijing and then drop behind it, you can encircle a bunch of divisions.

With your navies it is worth enabling automatic split-off so they'll go off on their own to repair rather than the entire fleet going off. :)

Me too, but I do think it is a problem that you sort of run out of relevant focuses by like 43 to 44.

I agree, I like the german and japanese focus tree's as they are and don't want anymore of these overly complex huge trees with a bunch of filler 70 day focuses that literally don't do anything. I also don't want a communist germany path added because it would have literally been impossible to happen by 1936.

Well I just played as Japan historically this week and I just went for a soft attack focused light tanks, going through the mobile doctrine and it worked pretty damn well against the chines who were unable to peirce the tanks and would get overrun by their speed.
Last time I played with Japan I went Mass Assault-Deep Battle for supply consumption. With China and potentially Soviet Union, it can help a bit

China accidentally got a buff in the new update. Discovered this in a mp game as china. Bc one advisor gives you army xp instead of 4, you can get army xp wayyyyyyyyyy more efficiently and get rid of at least one debuf before the war even starts. First time I ever capped Japan as china in mp

nah i just naval invade china in it's every coast and press the escalation as many as i can then if i can form a solid line from beijing to the south i just push until chongjing with ichi go activated (while also connecting railways to the supply hub)

For Japan hoi4 players I recommend to use the island garrison to make navel invasion do not call your puppets and try take quindao with that garrison. Then with the cavalry arrive to the river and then make the Beijing push. You destroy around 25% china division with this movement but you have to micro very well and attack only how I said to have success. If you attack Beijing while you are naval invasion maybe you fail.
And obviously no garrison anything. Use all your division. Early game 0 powerful enemies. Use all and make naval invasion into China quindao and the other city with port must be your principal objectives. Don't use all your navy (fuel consume) and that all. Easy way to take china in one year.

Yes, china is thougher than before, their army debuff is now -30% Def/atk when before it was 50%, if I remember well.
I haven't played Japan since NSB since I didn't want to deal with infrastructure and supply lines across the sea
The best way to play Japan non-historically is to invade the Netherlands and then use their holdings in South America to invade the United States. You can do this at the start of the game, and with the new patch, you can seize the American Navy as well, giving you the strongest navy in the game. Then you can turn your attention to China.
When it comes to playing historically, collab governments are mandatory: Chiang Kai-Sheks surrender limit bonuses mean you're fighting into the depths of China. If you want to grind generals, that's fine, but if you want to quickly conquer China it's a pain. Use collab governments, allow China to cycle charge your lines in Manchuria, then launch naval invasions to cut off the Chinese forces in the north and surround the capital (don't take it). This will throw the entire Chinese army into total disarray.
In both cases it's worth releasing some territory, since the garrisons are huge. Korea and the Manchurian territories you hold should be released. You don't get any cores and you can annex them later.

also, build harbors for supply. build spy network and colab government in china so you can annex them faster and then install a collab government.
i like to add light slow tanks to my infantry, max armor and breakthrough at 4km. cheap and effective against china

Paradox needs to focus on reworking the previous DLCs and countries before they start adding new ones. Waking the Tiger and Man the Guns were blown out of the water by La Resistance. Spain, a neutral country, has a better focus tree than some major nations

Island is a lot easier if you are the UK or Japan and not a landlocked nation like Czechoslovakia
UK and Japan is super easy, if you know what youre doing its pretty much impossible to capitulate, if you were playing australia or something its pretty hard though just cause you dont really have anything

what I have done is ignore china entirely and rush through the strike south doctrine bypassing the phillippens and secure the Dutch east indies by late 38 early 39 to get oil rubber and aluminium so when war breaks out with Britain I am in a advantageous position to seize Malaya, the British raj and Australia before the US can intervene. You can also do this with declaring war on china which would allow you to strike into Delhi while attacking through Burma. However, this would require you to win the first war in 18 months which isn't always easy. But either way this strategy gives you command of all the resources, manpower (India with a prince of terror) and positioning you need before the war with the US starts.
i run these hoi4 videos as background noise in my morning routine. 😅
I’d like to have next DLC update Japan and add some balance of power changes to other nations, especially Germany. I’d like to see an SS vs Wehrmacht power struggle and a communist path as a secret option kinda like the Pope for Italy

My favourite tactic for Japan is to rush anti-tank planes ASAP, if we have like 2000 CAS on the sky while still bashing your head on China, you will win even with the debuff or supplies issue

Gonna be honest but HOI4 really needs to be either discontinued or have a new model for updates to be introduced.
Focus trees and content is so varied that I’d argue that countries with older trees are at an major advantage as they don’t have to go through as much waffle (no offence paradox) as the super big new focus trees. A good example is Spain - before La Resistance, Spain was a nation that could easily be made a major player by 1939, now you’d be lucky if you even had your whole country as a core. Many nations are FAR weaker due to new trees.
HOI really needs to just release general updates that make sure all major trees are updated simultaneously, while having DLC for smaller nations and things like flavour packs.
