This is one of the absolute key tracks played in the "Quiet Storm" genre that was popular on late night urban radio stations during the late 1970s thru the 1980s. The genre was soothing contemporary soul/R&B music, often with some jazz overtones. The term "Quiet Storm" comes from a Smokey Robinson song from 1975. Wikipedia has a "List of Quiet Storm songs" entry for those interested.

Yep Smokey coined the term because of his song , but an overnight DJ in DC named Melvin Lindsey created the format playing similar songs and requests during his show.

I like how you dated the “quiet storm” genre only to the 80’s lol. Brutha I’m from the Bay Area and we had a literal radio station called “the quiet storm” all the way through the 2000’s. But the bay just moved a bit different than the rest of the world I guess 🤷♂️

All you need to appreciate is it was ground breaking back in 1974 guys, 50 years ago! and it sounds as fresh and compelling as it ever did.
I was in high school when this album came out. I can't describe the absolute JOY of watching younger folks get turned back on to REAL music. No "scratch", no endless loop samples, just a group of musicians playing actual instruments, and throwin' it down........good work!

Kool & the Gang started out as a jazz band before they got into more popular music, a combinations of r&b, funk and disco. Their early albums are heavily jazz influenced.
There's actually a sequel to this song entitled 'Winter Sadness " on the following album "Spirit of the Boogie "
I cannot hear this song without thinking of GTA: Vice City-which is where I heard this song for the first time!
This is so smooth ive got it on my funeral (cremation) play list as the box goes into the furnace. I kid you not.
I can already see the smoke coming out of the smokestack, transporting your soul toward the heavens as that last key of the song drops and echo into eternity.

I saw Kool & The Gang live at Sea World in Orlando, FL and have the single record of "Celebration" including two album cassette tapes. The best years of my life were during the 1980s as a teen.

Early Kool & the Gang, before JT and Celebration, is such an amazing fusion of funk and jazz and R&B. Never thought so at the time (I was too much of a rocker snob), but now? Love them

I am sorry but are you mad, you can't clean house to this :-) This is laying back, sipping something fruity and alcoholic through a straw, twiddling with the drinks umbrella in the other hand, chilling type music.
