I remember there was a United 747 that diverted to Wellington - from searching that looked to have been in 1991

I remember that one. Meant to fly to Auckland but fog closed AKL and the 747 had insufficient fuel to divert to CHCH so it had to land in WLG.

Wow that would be an amazing experience for people during that day

In the background you can hear the beautiful scream of the Air NZ F27s and their RR Darts! I wonder if Air NZ would have kept the F27s longer had it not been sold? Eight of the 10 F27-500s weren't even that old.

Interesting to hear how the nz accent has changed over 35 years!

With no payload and nominal fuel then 2km is heaps of runway for any jet airliner.

Thanks Matt, I didn't see that one that day, but I did see ZK-NZX when it did flypast of Athletic Park, and landed at Wellington 26th June 1999, it was a pretty awesome sight.
I only have 35mm camera shots of it there.
I can just remember the 747SPs at Wellington, I have never seen any film of them in action in Wellington, only photos.

qantas ran 747SPs between wellington and australia between 1981 and 1985 so it wasnt exactly the first 747 to land in wellington.

Thanks for your comment, this was the first time for a Boeing 747 that
was not a 747SP, and first time for Air New Zealand's 747-200s. I
remember the SP days very well, they were such beautiful beast. Cheers
      Chris

Yes! I was at St Pats college in the early 1980s and used to be mesmerised during maths class when the Qantas 747SP approached Wellington airport in the early afternoon - got a birdseye view from the classroom. Used to just hang there! Then the teacher threw a blackboard duster at me! Throwing things at students was permissable in those days, but would make the headline news these days!

@@benpatana7664 reminds me of a worksite I worked at some years ago when one of the site managers threw a hammer at a staff member but it hit another worker in error. They first staff members infraction? Arriving at work 4 minutes before the official start time. According to the site manager if you where 5 minutes early you where late and of course you where not paid for that five extra minutes a day. The target lost his job five minutes later site manager kept his and refused to apologize to the innocent worker hit but the innocent worker didn't have grounds for a PG as he was Labour Hire and quit the site later that day
