I believe British Summer time and bringing the clocks forward in spring came about during either WW1 or WW11 to provide farmers with more daylight hours in which to work. There was even an experiment with double daylight saving when the clocks went forward 2 hours but that didn't last long.
It was long before that it was during the industrial revolution to get the factory workers to work more, the farmer thing us been said now to justify it, as electricity is everywhere and lighting is everywhere most have forgotten or it's not taught in schools anymore on why they started daylight savings. I was fishing half my life and clocks changing made no difference only thing was we went to sleep one hour earlier or later depending on what way the clocks changed we as had to have our nets in the water before sunrise
I wish they would just change it half an hour and leave it there - giving us good sunlight in the evenings in the summer and getting slightly later dark 5:30pm instead of 5pm for when people are travelling home from work at night in the winter - the week after daylight savings both forward and back is a really kicker by the end of the week going both ways for kids and adults
🤣 9, you get 9! It be fair you need to do a round with answering the same questions, Cammie definitely got the easier ones, I had no clue on most of Iona's, but got a lot of these. Here in the States we are waiting until Nov 2 to push the clocks back, I believe so the little kids can Trick or Treat with a bit of light left. The lore of the history as I remember it has to do with saving energy/candles/whale oil, whatever by having work hours more within daylight hours. Some connection to Benjamin Franklin, and then some mention of one of world wars or such. Not all the states observe Daylight Savings, and there's a number of states that want to say on DST permanently....if enough neighboring states sign it, they'll do it. (Actually, there's talk of the whole country going to permanent DST, I'm not sure people actually want it to be dark until 8am in winter, and light at 3am in summer.) Travel wise it's always a bit of a mess here, there's 4 mainland time zones (again, certain states also don't do DST), and 9 total US time zones.
You 2 have such great banter and the topic that you start with, but then end on a completely different subject I find endearing. Thank god for Google hey Cammie 😂😂😂
Arable calendar starts when the 3rd skiing holiday of the year is done. Phrases i´ve learned since I moved here. "Ye Ken" "Thats you" when you're shopping also, 9 😅
Iona, just to let you know, pilots around the world operate with GMT - Greenwich Mean Time. They have charts which let them know how many hours to add or subtract from GMT based on whatever destinations are planned. The use of GMT standardizes “time” this way. Hope this answers your question ! 😊
To be fair Cammy you both agreed if you start a question then you should be able to answer it ,however Iona was being kind because time ran out and Iona hadn’t started question 10 anyway so by right your score is 9 😂 but well done for getting 9 👍And as always great catch up 👏🥰🥰
Mechanical clocks go back to the 1300’s. The Salisbury Cathedral Clock, which dates to 1386, is considered one of the oldest surviving mechanical clocks. Alfred the Great used candles as clocks. According to the biography of King Alfred the Great written by Bishop Asser, the king created a candle clock to help him divide his day into periods of study, prayer, royal duties, and rest. Alfred's candle clock was made up of six candles, each 12 inches tall, that burned for four hours. The candles were marked with 20-minute intervals, and when one candle burned down, another was lit. There have been clocks on The Repair Shop that date to the 1600’s. I’m always impressed by the skill and beauty they used in making the parts used for the clocks hundreds of years ago.
Iona, my daughter just got married and she’s kept her last name because it’s way cooler than her husband’s name. She tried to convince him to take her name but he didn’t but he did say the kids can have her last name!
Daylight savings originally started during the industrial revolution to get the factory workers to be able to work more hours, but don't think it was out into law and it was only the factory towns that followed it
Love it. You two are so good. Love the banter and you are like me, if you don't know something you look it up. 😂 Great round up this week. Looking forward to hearing if you got 9 or 10 in the quiz Cammy. 🤔🐑🐄🌾👏🏼🤩
Iona... Computers and GPS automatically compensate for variations in time zones. Commercial pilots don't have to run on a modern version of "railroad time". 😉
Day light savings History lesson *At First In1784 Benjamin Franklin suggested to wake up earlier to use natural resources in the summer & change the hrs, in order save money lamp oil & candles & not to waste the natural daylight. His suggestion was printed in the Paris paper Journal De Paris. Only it didn't happen at that time**In 1908 a few small towns Port Arthur & Fort Williams Canada tried DLT **Then Germany Started Daylight savings setting clocks forward on April 30 1916 to begin on May 1st 1916 to save on Fuel & Coal cost for WW1.Then UK started using DLT a few weeks later. in 1916, IN 1940-47 Uk had DLT to help workers get home before the Blackout in order to increase productivity in war supplies.** (The Blackout was to stop all lights on the ground so enemy aircraft couldn't see where to bomb) in 1968 UK tried GMT all year but it was to dark in Scotland so In 1971 They went back to the DLT USA started to use it,1918 (farmers hated it. So they stopped a yr later) then Started DLT again during WW2 in1942-45 WW2, Then In1966 it was voted back in all states to conserve fuel in all states except for Arizona & Hawaii to this day. In AZ its due to the climate & the hot Deserts temps & (I live in AZ) & Hawaii because it's close to the equator so its daylight mostly stays the same . many country's do not use DLT
The time change, in the US, was implemented as a way to maximize daylight hours to help save on energy consumption during World War I. No one can explain why we continue with it.
Yup. Everyone saying stop changing time. There all going to be stuck with timechange they don't want. Sun at 330am. Can't wait. No one believes me. They (family) think I'm wrong. Oh well
Love the phrase you can’t breed mice off of rats STRANGE a teacher tried to imply my sister had failed a grade because she was tall Without batting an eyelash mom pointed to dad who towered over the men he was talking to and said you expect him to father mice😂😂 Now I took your phrase to mean the same thing genetically you can only breed within your own species Even if scientists are trying to create new ones😂
A question! It’s even relevant. It’s about this bolus medication. How is it you put a lump of stuff into the stomach of the creature and it stays there for up to 6 months? Thank you!
The time change here is strange . I have a son in Arizona , depending on the time of year he is 1 - 2 hours ahead of me in Missouri . Another son lives in Florida and he is the same time as me .
@@FedByFarmersPodcast We love it but it does make it confusing. When the NFL starts Arizona is on California time, so the games start at 10am. When the time changes Arizona moves to Denver time, an hour later, so the games start at 11. Since we have 4 time zones in the US, it mostly impacts Arizonans who want to watch / listen to live events. It is darker in the morning in the winter, but only until around 7 or so. And during the hottest part of the day in the summer most people are at work, so homes don’t have to be as cool as if someone was home.
Oddly enough, the farmers were the excuse for the time change in North America for harvesting and children benefited working in field. Now it's pure economic and wish we didn't change the clock's. Iona can keep her name by moving to the middle of she chooses to take her husband's. Cammy right about volume costing. It only works if they cost less per head to grow. Have a great weekend from 🇨🇦
That last one doesn't count. Iona hadn't started to read the question so you're just desperately trying to match HGP but he's got you by 1 point. Iona's right on this one.
Cammy, I’m reluctant to say anything as the both of you are lovely, but I’ve noticed that more often than not when Iona thanks the sponsors she often breaks out in giggles before she gets through the statement. If I gave money to you and happened to catch one of these thank yous I would be disappointed. It sounds like she’s ungrateful and doesn’t appreciate the sponsorship. Businesses give money to get their name out there. The repetition people hear week after week is making consumers aware of the brand even if they don’t actively need it. Laughing through the thanks just disrupts that process and diverts attention away from the brand and focuses it on trying to figure out why she’s laughing during what should be a professional moment. Like I said, you two are great. I would just hate for you to lose your sponsorship. ❤
We do appreciate the feedback, and we know where it's coming from. But we're not at all at risk of losing the sponsorship. We know the Crystalyx and Tracesure team personally, and they're really happy with our delivery. We like to be ourselves. We're glad you enjoy the podcast!
@@FedByFarmersPodcastThanks for the response and I am glad you have such a good relationship with them, that’s awesome. I’m a former business owner and have sponsored numerous causes. My concern came from how I would feel if I were in their position. I tried to be respectful as I obviously couldn’t know the whole story, and am very happy to know your sponsorship is safe. As I said, I think you two are fantastic and often listen to each podcast a few times (my favorite is to go to the playlist of the Friday catchup and play while I shower or clean the house). Thanks for taking the time to respond and I hope you know I meant no ill will, I was just concerned is all. Keep up the good work ❤
The Scottish education used to be the envy of the world, you two prove that is no longer the case…. At least Cammy’s Dad didn’t waste money like Iona’s dad squandered all that blackie money on Wellington
