When I used acetate for this technique I had a disaster and ended up having the scrape and blend the lovely marbling effect, because the buttercream wouldn't come away properly from the acetate; it was too soft even after 1.5 hours in the freezer. How long did you freeze your cake both before applying the sheet and once it was on? Any advice to prevent this happening again? I've seen that some people grease the acetate with margarine. What do you think? Thanks

No because the royal icing will set hard but you can definitely do it in Christmassy colours!
