😳 Hemmer's death to me was THE most shocking moment of the season. Totally caught me off guard... 😑
I agree. Think this was a mistake. Such a great, lovable character. Don't know what the reasoning was for this. Can't be to make way for Scotty, right? Wouldn't Scotty be a young officer like Spock. I'm bummed.
@@kimhansen8568 - Well, if Scotty is the one replacing Hemmer, then to me it'll take off some of the shock, though I thought it WAS too early for Hemmer to kick the bucket... 🪣 😏
Yeah, I was liking him more and more, totally bummed.
I was yelling at the screen in disbelief!
So sad.
Jim Kirk's really lucky that the Gorn lose all of their speed when they mature and start walking on two legs.
The Arena seems comical in comparison. It always was, but even more so now.
@@Retrohertz They did the best with what they had at that time. Gotta love the Styrofoam boulders though!
🤣🤣🤣
Wouldn't this version of Gorn have killed Kirk rather easily and infected him with Gorn eggs.
I think this kind of messed up that particular episode of original star trek
@@kev30631 not necessarily. I fully expect that the Gorn in Arena will turn out to be an old, infirm Gorn that is well past its prime. Maybe we will see an old Gorn moving stiffly like that at some point.
Also, the Gorn are cold-blooded, maybe the weather was cold on that planet. Reptiles move very slowly when cold.
Why does EVERYONE keep missing that Uhrua's leaving then being talked out of it is a DIRECT reverence to how Nichelle Nicholes stayed with Star Trek after season 1 after talking to Martin Luther King Jr? Seriously, this is Trek 101. Also, I wish they hadn't killed off Hemmer, I was really hoping he'd be around for a while. I get the feeling a Lt Scotty might be making an appearance in ep 10.
I recognized that from the start. It’s not only Uhuras rather than also nichelle’s story.
I did not miss it.
If Hemmers out. Could this mean Scotty's in? I'm certain we've not seen the last of the Gorn in this series. Also the Gorn which we have seen are larval stage Gorn. The Adults are very likely much, much worse.
Well that's interesting.
After watching the episode and then The Ready Room, Bruce Horak knew from the beginning that he was a Season 1 character only. I commend him for giving some of my favorite performances knowing he would not be there for Season 2.
And the episode itself with the Gorn was just amazing!!! In general, I loved this Horror Episode. But I will miss him so much.
So. Basically, this episode is a not-too-thinly veiled remake of "Aliens", with a bit of "Predator" thrown in.
I kept expecting Chapel to call Oriana "Newt" ...
Me too!! Bursting from the chest, laying eggs, acid for blood plus moving very fast. And the Gorn had Predator vision.
Should have called this episode "Children of the Gorn."
I'll show myself out. 😁
The Gorn present more like the Magog from Andromeda, honestly, from what they've shown.
Laying eggs in living hosts, sprayed secretions, killing their own kind over perceived weakness.
As well as being space faring and feared by other races. Hunting other races for food.
Even the way they communicate. Why does it feel like I'm the only one that watched that show?
Magog also lay more than one egg, like a brood, in a host and their young grow really fast.
Where Aliens only lay one embryo, through a separate egg and they don't seem to eat people or
have space travel.
I also didn't see the kid as a play on Newt, but a reflection of La'an as a kid in the same situation.
Something needed as a mirror to her in this episode. It's too easy to just point and say Aliens! hahaha
This pretty much makes Cpt. Kirk a legendary ass kicker. He beat an adult captain Gorn with sticks and stones....no wonder why Cpt. Sisko worships him.
So these baby gorn apparently grow up to be men in rubber suits.
I honestly just want them to keep changing what kind of episode it is from week to week. It's better when you don't know what to expect.
The episode was fantastic. It was genuinely disturbing and emotional. I was upset when Hemmer had to sacrifice himself. His big brother relationship with Uhura was getting great. I've really grown to love the main characters.
It's the sign of a truly great show.
they can't bring scotty in yet bc he never served under Pike.
"The Gorn" first appeared in episode 18 of the season 01 of the original series titled "Arena". In that episode no-one knew who the Gorn were. And that was only a few years (?) after these events. And yet here we are and everyone knows the Gorn exist; and that they plant eggs in other species it's just that no one has seen them and lived. I'm confused. Is there an explanation? I hardly think Spock would forget.
The two "red shirts" dying was pretty much expected the moment they were introduced. Anyone not see it coming? Apart from that pretty much an alien/predator ST:SNW's episode.
I was disappointed that Hemmer died at the end. He really didn't get a lot of screen time. I suppose we get Scotty turning up next episode.
Loved the episode, the pike reference about mini van at the beginning made me laugh aloud. The effects of the starship on the planet were fantastic.
Hemer? Leaving the show was tough but it left me wondering if Scotty will join the crew?
I liked how he served them homemade breakfast at the meeting table.
No one has ever done that in star trek. That was very character specific to him (Pike)
Part of me thinks it's soon to bring Scotty in, but if done well, it could work.
That's the first thing I thought of as well. We know Bruce Horak was told even before he was officially cast about the character arc, and that Hemmer was going to have a heroic demise. So this leaves it open for Scotty to come in. Ya, it may be a bit early, but actually James Doohan was 49, nearly 50 years old when TOS ended! Spock and Chapel are here on Enterprise 9-10 years before the events of TOS, so why not Scotty?
"It's a derivative ripoff, I loved it." We truly get the media we deserve.
Kirk reminded of ''Guy" from the Galaxy Quest Movie..His disposition was spot on!
He even looked like him. His outburst against Spock came out of nowhere. Give the guy some character before you completely destroy him.
I really took Hammer's death hard. I cant ever remember getting that emotional watching a Star Trek Ep anyway he was very wise and felt he had so much more to offer. The Gorn are horrifying, they just threw all the space horror clichés at it. Shocking lol In space no one can hear you scream.....
I wonder how much of the uncertainty about characters returning is due to contracts not having been finalized, and the show runners waiting to see fan reaction about these characters. This may also apply to the type of stories they write in upcoming seasons. Viewers' responses to the various episodes with different approaches, etc may influence later choices in scripts by showing which episodes viewers prefer, and which they don't.
Who knows? But actually, we DO KNOW Bruce Horak was told, even before he was officially cast, about the character arc, and that Hemmer was going to have a heroic demise. He's said so in interviews......
Another great Strange New Worlds episode. I am glad that they have made the Gorn into a very creepy, scary and deadly enemy motivated by things otter than the "Glory of Battle," the desire for more territory or political machinations. Very primal and no negotiating with a species that looks at you for two reasons, as food and as be a means to perpetuate their species. It is a bummer that Hemmer had to die so soon. He was an incredible character. But, I like it that in this series, having a main character die in the line of duty, greatly ups the stakes in this series. It's a bummer but totally realistic. This series definitely IS Star Trek.
Ummmmm, can you say Borg
How do those creatures build Starships? Next crewmembers Scotty and Sulu.
I liked all the stuff with Spock. The channeling up his rage and not being able to now control it. Great continuing story arc going into next season. I liked his scenes with nurse chapel.
I so agree
I can see Spock and Nurse Chapel having an affair.
@@crazybear5475
God I hope so 🙏
@@kev30631 there is too much sexual tension there.
@@crazybear5475 Is that the show runners way of skirting around the canon. It's already kicked over the canon.
The only way classic spock revealed some vague feeling for chapel was when he was dying or infected with a space disease.
In strange new worlds its so blatant and obvious in the eye contact and body language. the only thing missing is chapel screaming for Spock to give it to her.
Get ready for the introduction of Mr. Scott!
This episode was like the writers had ripped off a tumbler Fan Fiction mash up of Star Trek, Aliens, Predator and the MaGOG from Roddenberry's Andromeda. It had everything Chest bursters, Newt, Predator vision, the crashed ship was positioned just like the engineers ship on LV-426, spraying eggs just like the MaGOG. I'm surprised they didn't have a Rock character there with the BFG from Doom.
Lol
7:36 Children of the Gorn
Losing Hemmer this early was a mistake, we were just getting to know him, and I don't think that the episode needed it. I do admire the fact that SNW has now let us know that it is not afraid to kill off a main character but i feel that Hemmer's death occurred before his arc naturally played out. So much good stuff that could have been put on the screen. Imagine a Hemmer homecoming to Andoria and getting a full Andorian episode. And with how good the show is, it could have been a classic.
The Nu Trek writing staff has a big problem with needing to cram Big Dramatic Moments in wherever possible. Like the Hemmer death, absolutely unnecessary and it wasted possibly the most interesting character on the show. The writers need to SLOW DOWN, take a breath, stop to smell the roses etc. though I think a lot of it has to do with being given ridiculously short 10 episode seasons to work with. They don't have the time to fully flesh out any ideas, arcs, or characters and it turns the whole thing into a rushed mess.
There is so much potential here with this show, the first 6 or 7 episodes were pretty great, but some cracks are starting to appear in the writing IMO.
@@kingcrimson234 Have you seen the attention spam of this generation?
how can they depict the Gorn as a very primitive creature which can build a ship that outpowers starfleet
I had the same question. Very puzzling.
Toddler Gorn, I think. Two year olds don't build starships.
Love this series and crew. So sad Hemmer had to go. I agree, why so soon? I miss him! He had a way about him that was so endearing and likeable. Initially in the season, he came across as gruff, stoic stern, we got to see a more open, more mentoring, more generous and empathic Hemmer. His lines about love for the ones we care about is above and beyond the sorrow when they leave us struck deep inside me. RIP Hemmer. Also, when he told Spock to live long and prosper, Spock couldn't return that back to him. Ouch. I felt that.
The horror factor had me on my toes almost all episode. Having my new headset with Dolby Atmos on really added me to the Emerson.
@Sci-Finatics Hello Nick, I loved this enthralling episode. I agreed with everything you stated.
To start, shout out to Pike for cooking a scrumptious buffet and for his Master chef baking skills…the sweets looked ever so tantalising. I was so delighted with the breakfast for the Ensigns as this exemplified the camaraderie and sense of community between the crew members. In a way, it reflected what happens in the real world with send offs.
This episode for me had it all, including the station wagon humour.
For me, I was surprised about some character arcs conclusions. It felt like a finale for some reason and a resolution heading into season 2. Also, I found this “alien and predator” like episode to be way better executed in terms of pacing than the Orville’s spider monster of the week 3rd episode. I had to suspend my belief in how the crew got around so easily on the ship with the intelligent Gorn hunting them down. That said, I was on the edge of my seat as it was suspenseful for me, tense and dramatic with the bonds between the crew being tested to their limits.
The CGI was indeed of a high standard with the Gorn and of the crashed ship. The blue alien Buckley was most interesting and I was impressed with the prosthetics and animatronic features.
And kudos to the actors for their brilliant and genuine performances of being so scared and shocked. I liked how cool, calm and collected Pike was, showing true leadership and bringing everyone together. The journey for Uhura and La’an revealed much character development for them to move on and feel at peace in where they want to be. In particular, La’an will finally get her resolution from her past trauma. She really reminded me of Ripley from Aliens.
Regarding Sam Kirk, I really didn’t like his lines as he came across as a selfish, whiny doofus but it was more of a plot device for Spock to face his rage. As for Spock, I am impressed with how the writers are depicting the start of Spock’s inner conflict of his human versus Vulcan side, with the surfacing of his emotions, and how it will lead to the emotionally repressed Spock of TOS.
As for Hemmer, his demise was emotional , leading to tears on my part. For me, out of the characters he was so well written and he made a huge impact, despite the few appearances he made. The actor brought to life a memorable, intriguing character with so much depth, personality and insightfulness. I wish we could have seen more of Hemmer and I agree that he will become a fan favourite.
So is Scott coming as next chief engineer
The only thing I didn't like about this one was how James T Kirk was portrayed as such a whiny hot head. Kinda eats up that Larger than life thing..
I absolutely agree
Greetings & salutations! The following are my real-time reactions as I watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S1E9 - All Those Who Wander.
As always, these novel-length rants of mine are meant to be tongue in cheek, so for heaven's sake don't take it too seriously. I may like something you don't, and vice versa. Read if you like, don't if you don't. (Only so much time in the day afterall.) My hope is that this post will spark substantive discussion amongst Star Trek fans everywhere I post, so if you stick around feel free to chime in too.
As always, I only watch each episode once, so some nonsense I'm mentioning might be answered before the credits roll.
Finally - please support this UA-cam channel! I merely litter their comment section with nonsense, but it's the content creators who put in the real effort. So like it, subscribe to it, ding-a-ling that bell and help it grow already.
Thanks in advance for your time!
***SPOILERS***
1) We open with Cadet Uhura narrating her personal log entry against the background of a send off party. Both she Cadet Chia have completed their assignments on the Enterprise. Normally I'd be pointing out yet another scene that opens with slow motion and/or from behind the furniture, but I confess there is a delicacy to this cinematography that has been absent throughout most of the season before now. So too has the semblance that this is a lived in ship, full of crewmembers going about their duties. So for this episode to focus so heavily on them is actually rather refreshing.
2) Uhura emphasizes that this crew is made up of, "The top everyone of everything..." Again, this is refreshing to hear, especially since much of the season seems to have lost sight of this fact, with most of these characters actually saying or doing things counter to being the best of the best, often to the point where one questions their competencies. Where has this humble, self reflection been all season? I like it a lot.
3) A subtle moment that you miss if you blink. Number One gestures to Pike that time is ticking. As in, let's get this moving along already. Again, this is the logistical side of being the First Officer aboard a Starship shining through. This entire season I've pointed out how lackadaisical Pike has been, often shirking responsibility and making some of the least informed decisions I've ever seen a captain make. There is no doubt in my mind who runs this ship. It's Una. And rightfully so. She is the steady handed, stern leader that keeps this vessel moving as well as it does. Pike is all about delegation, unless it's drinks. Una is the captain behind the captain, and I wish she occupied the top seat more often than she does.
4) Uhura is the most inconsistently written character on this show. We are finally seeing her questioning her future motivations again. Something we haven't seen since Johnny Bravo's last Ribfest party. I don't know why Uhura's dialogue over the season wasn't peppered with this lack of inspiration, but I'm glad to see it has returned.
5) A working lunch seems to follow a Priority One mission from Starfleet Command. As the show continues to find its feet in season 2 and beyond, this is the sort of banter I hope really gets pulled back. I appreciate that the show wants to colour in moments of levity here and there, but enough already. This is a paramilitary-style ship, let's roll up our sleeves a bit more and tone it down on the team building. Take for instance this moment, the Chief of Security saunters in late to the meeting, blurting out snide comments about the "head shrinker". Do we have a Priority One mission to review or not? The crew of the Peregrine might all be dead or dying, but sure, let's make certain Singh has her waffles.
6) It's like, you JUST showed Una urging Pike to keep things moving at the party, and yet the show literally undermines that sense of urgency in the very next scene. Sure Singh, let's make sure you get that extra cheese. Mercy.
7) The USS Peregrine is a Sombra-class ship. M'Benga indicates that the Sombra-class ship is fast. Considering the peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on earth I'd say it's aptly named.
8) Wait, I'm legitimately confused as to the Priority One mission from Starfleet. If the last communication with the Peregrine came as it initiated an Emergency Landing - communication that was then abruptly cut off - then how does Starfleet even know that the ship survived the landing? A landing that was 4 days ago.
9) Why is this the second Starfleet outpost this season that needs resources to be delivered by the Enterprise just as their current supply is on the brink of running out? First it was the atmospheric processor urgently needed by the colony back in episode 4, now it's Vidium power cells for Deep Space Station K-7? Who is in charge of logistics at Starfleet Command, and why is it so last minute before these outposts receive their supplies? (This better not be another Gorn episode, or else I might be convinced that they have an informant planted within Starfleet Command with knowledge of upgrade schedules.)
10) Pike opts to to kill two peregrines with one stone, sending Number One to K-7 while he opts to take an away mission to Valeo Beta Five, an L-class planet, with cadets for some reason. Again, can't help but think the captain is making yet another bad decision in a season full of them. Need I remind you they don't even know if the ship or crew survived the emergency landing. If there is a chance the Peregrine crew is injured or the ship can fly again, then this away should be FULL of medical officers and engineers. Not cadets.
11) Two shuttles make their way to the surface, landing nowhere close to the Peregrine for some reason.
12) Is there any reason why the Sombra-class starship looks like a Constitution-class starship? I know M'Benga mentioned that it uses Constitution-class parts, but I can't help but think the art department didn't get the approval or time or budget to design an entirely new ship. Something all fans appreciate. Lame.
13) I take it back, the shuttles do have a reason to land so far away from the Peregrine. Geothermal anomalies. Thank you for the clarification Mr. Spock.
14) Hemmer is living his best life. I dig it.
15) Spock refers to Lieutenant Duke as, "ensign" and apparently that means he has to buy Duke a drink. I'm not sure this is so much a tradition in Starfleet as much as it is a traditional on Johnny Bravo's ship. Nice to see Sam Kirk again. Can't wait to see him nearly get killed again this episode.
16) Singh spots what appears to be a human body on the surface. Again, for all Starfleet knows, the entire crew is dead.
17) Credit show this episode is written by Davy Perez. If I'm not mistaken, he also wrote episode 4. I guess he just really likes his outposts-need-resources-immediately trope for whatever reason. Oh man this episode better not have the Gorn or I'm telling you, it'll feel like there is an informant at Starfleet Command divulging logistics secrets to them...
18) I see that this episode is directed by Christopher J. Byrne. This guy is really talented. With craftsmanship like this Kurtzman & Goldsman need to hire him to helm the entire second season.
19) I was critical of Uhura accompanying this mission, but her insights into communications are proving useful. Pike is almost as surprised as I am as he states, "Clearly I brought the right people for the job." Apparently he did! I just wish it felt like deftness as opposed to luck.
20) Is it me, or is Pike less than nonplussed that 20 Peregrine crewmembers (including the captain) have perished?
21) Uhura accesses the log of the Peregrine captain. The dialogue is a bit clumsy, and the voice performance is a bit wooden, but the solid cinematography more than makes up for it.
22) Gorn! I can't believe I called that. I blame the writer Perez, telegraphing the same resource-limited scenario that he invoked in his last Gorn episode.
23) Why is Pike asking Singh on what she wants to do. Dude, you're the captain. You need to make these tactical decisions. Deferring to Singh's judgment undermines your aptitude as a character.
24) Seems a bit strange that Pike would allow Uhura to take the lead when entering the next unsecured room, with an alien "humanoid" with unclear intentions no less.
25) It seems we found the human girl to go along with the humanoid. Obvious question is, how did these two manage to survive the initial blast set off by their Orion travel companion Pesko and the subsequent Gorn encounters?
26) No Chapel, Duke didn't come himself because the writers need you & Spock to have yet another forced scene together. Really hope this stops in season 2.
27) Conversely, this scene between Hemmer and Uhura is most welcome. Hemmer is easily becoming the most interesting character on this show. It is somewhat ironic that Uhura laments a role in Starfleet as akin to "coasting" when we know too well that Nichelle Nichols' time in the role unfortunately gave her little to do.
28) Singh starts to berate Oriana. "Where are the Gorn!?" Seems like a silly thing to ask. How would she know?
29) M'Benga references his daughter. I like that he does. Makes a lot of sense. Makes far less sense that Singh would barely notice the odd choice of words though.
30) Uhhh okay, M'Benga is now actually referencing his daughter to Singh. Apparently she knows who she is for some reason?
31) With all the flickering lights, dead bodies, open vents, and deadly creatures abound, you'd think I'd have made a Nostromo reference by now. But alas, it took the little Gorn bursting from the humanoid's body for me to see the Alien flick comparison.
PART TWO FOLLOWS
PART TWO
32) Why did Oriana cover her mouth I wonder.
33) Apparently the Alien vibes aren't enough monster movie references. We also seem to need a Predator-style POV shot as well.
34) Not gonna lie, I chuckled at Kirk chastising Duke for having touched something that could have killed him lol.
35) Okay so Duke apparently bites the dust, or rather, gets bitten. I gotta say, this entire season has made it fairly evident that this show doesn't know how to stage compelling live action sequences. Sadly, this scene will not buck that trend either, as four crewmembers seem entirely useless when it comes to stopping Duke from being dragged off. Also, why aren't they running after him to see if he's still alive?
36) Pike says, "We need to alert the rest of the crew. Right now." Uh alert them of what? Didn't they all know that Gorn was possibly running all over the place?
37) Singh startling Chapel actually gave me a jump scare. Nice.
38) Why doesn't Starfleet tech detect the Gorn? First the Peregrine captain said the bio-filters missed them, and now tricorders can't locate their bio signs? I'm telling you, there is a Gorn mole who has infiltrated Starfleet!
39) Back to Hemmer and Uhura. Not gonna lie, I suddenly find myself wondering how tough a hide Hemmer's skin makes.
40) "Team Hemhura strikes again." Find the producer that signed off on that line and fire them.
41) Hemmer smells human blood. Putting aside the fact that he knows what it smells like, why is this a shocker? There is human blood everywhere, including at the entrance where they first boarded the Peregrine. He should have said, "I smell human blood. Fresh human blood." Still creepy, but at least lends itself better to the urgency of the moment.
42) Sam Kirk is losing it. Not that I blame him, but if Pike wasn't such a pushover a stern talking to might snap the lieutenant back into focus.
43) Pike says he wounded one of the Gorn? Did I miss something? He shot wildly at Duke's body, but I didn't see him wound one of the Gorn. Seriously, did something get cut out? Again, hire a dedicated stunt coordinator. A show with this kind of budget needs to make this a priority for season 2.
44) So finally Pike has the ability to alert the crew and this is all the information he gives them? "Get to Sick Bay." Great details on the threat they're facing, captain!
45) Oh wow, okay... So apparently THAT is what a Gorn looks like in this show, eh? Looks like a cross between a Xindi-Insectoid and the GEICO Gecko.
46) Uhura doesn't immediately shoot the Gorn. Instead she takes the time to state, "We need to make a run for it." This, of course leads to Hemmer getting puked all over by the GEICO Gecko. Uhura is literally the worst part of Team Hemhura.
47) Apparently the GEICO Gecko puke burns. Seems we will see how thick a hide Hemmer has after all.
48) Kirk goes off on Spock. Maybe someone told Kirk that Spock didn't so much as bat an eyelash when he nearly died on the Sheperd comet and he is still bitter about it?
49) This pep talk from Pike sucks. This guy seriously sounds like he can't be bothered with this situation.
50) Singh says they wouldn't have a chance against even one adult Gorn. I'm confused, wasn't that actually an adult Gorn that she just fired upon and chased away? Aren't the younglings the smallest ones that burst out of the humanoid? She said there were 4 of those. One was already dead. The GEICO Gecko just squashed one, so there are two left, plus the adult she just got the upper hand on, no? Why doesn't she think they could stand up to it if she literally just did?
51) Where is Newt? I mean M'Benga's daughter? I mean, Oriana?
52) Singh says they need to use "aggressive" behavior to draw them out. Uhhhh literally no one was using aggressive behavior prior to this and they all were drawn out pretty well. She then also states that Gorn hate the cold. Yes, we learned that already. Hence the bodies of the crew outside, apparently trying to lure them out into the elements. So here is a question Ms. Tactical Analysis - Don't you think the Peregrine crew would have thought to lure them onboard the ship too? Maybe you should ascertain whether or not they did make such an attempt too, if so, did it work?
53) M'Benga comments that Pike still hasn't changed his command codes. Now why would he do something responsible like that, doc? It's not really on brand for him, is it?
54) Hemmer says he won't kill the Gorn, but will "Do what he must to protect the lives of this crew..." Soooo maybe you will kill it after all? Abracadabra! You're dead GEICO Gecko!
55) Pike declares it's going into the vent systems. So apparently we can track it now with ship sensors?
56) Spock goes full Rambo. Seems odd, considering Uhura didn't have to.
57) Singh conveniently suggests that the two GEICO Geckos that are dueling one another will somehow both perish. I guess it's impossible for one of them to kill the other? Nope? Okay then! More great insights from Ms. Tactical Analysis!
58) This is just a friendly reminder for the crew. You have no proof that there isn't already several adult Gorn hiding somewhere. Either on the ship. Or in a cave system on the planet surface. Or maybe even back in your shuttles.
59) Ms. Tactical Analysis seems to think throwing her weapon away makes sense. Couldn't she have just handed it off to one of the other crewmembers on the other side of the door she just came from? I bet Rambo Spock would appreciate a phaser instead of whatever the heck it is he's holding.
60) Now I'm no Ms. Tactical Analysis, but I still don't understand why the crew couldn't have just huddled somewhere - say, on the bridge - and couldn't have simply chilled the rest of the ship. You know, freeze them all with one go? At least that way you could theoretically exterminate any other GEICO Geckos that you might not have accounted for.
61) Aww look at that frozen GEICO Gecko. Hope he had insurance.
62) "It's dead, Chris." Why does Pike look and sound like he just woke up from a bad acid flashback?
63) Kirk rejoices that they've gotten rid of the last if them. If we're still keeping with the whole Alien vibes, there should be one waiting for you back on the shuttle.
64) You sons of bitches. You've infected Hemmer. Literally the most interesting character on this damned show. And now you're telling me he's gotta walk off into the sunset for the last time? Are you freaking kidding me? Wow, as if I didn't need another reason to dislike Uhura.
65) Hemmer is an absolute stud.
66) Spock clocking Hemmer's sacrifice is a nice touch. Not heavy handed, but those that know, know.
67) Hemmer gives one last piece of advice to Uhura. "Open yourself." It's a touching moment, even if the choice of words are unfortunate given what he's about to experience...
68) Enjoy the view, blue skin. This crew - this show - won't be the same without you, pal.
69) This scene is the best thing Ortegas has done on this show. Wow. She suddenly has such depth. More of this please.
70) Hemmer's purpose. "To fix what is broken." Combined with this solid cinematography? I'm telling you, sign this director long term. Immediately.
71) Spock's affixed stare at Chapel. Chills.
72) This is the first time all season that I actually wanted Chapel to chase after Spock for a scene between the two of them. It is actually an earned moment between them both.
73) I've often criticized Peck for being too closed off vocally. It is clear to me now that this actor accesses anger far easier than any other emotion. I say this because this moment is the best performance Peck has given to date.
74) That was the first time I believed the chemistry from Chapel towards Spock. Hire. This. Director. Long. Term. Immediately.
75) Singh is departing the Enterprise to help Oriana find family. The direction is top notch. I can't get over it. He knows exactly where he wants the camera and he knows exactly how to get the best out of these actors. Including Chong, who also gives the best performance of her season with this goodbye.
76) A missed opportunity to have Pike reflect on his decision to include Cadet Chia and Lt Duke. Names that should haunt him moving forward...
77) We close with Uhura as she overlooks the position she's destined to serve at. Cinematography is beautiful.
CONCLUSION
That was the best episode of the season, and easily the best episode in NuTrek. Which is to say, the best Star Trek I've seen since 2005. Not perfect, bends canon, needs better action choreography, borrows heavily from other sci-fi properties, and still depicts Pike as the most useless captain I've ever seen, but really well done overall.

thanks for this review, one of your best. The episode was so intense, you helped calm me down a lot with the little jokes ("Baby Gorn do do do do do do)
I am rating Season One of Strange New Worlds as the best overall season of any in the franchise, aware that ten episodes is very different from when there would be a couple of dozen if not more.
Loved your review!
I see Scotty coming......
The Gorn mostly come out at night, mostly.
Hahah this episode just highlights how cringe this new trek is
Great video!!! Game over, man! Game over!! Freakin hilarious
Can't believe they killed Hemmer! Great new character and didn't make it thru one season? And while I've loved this show, this episode not so much. Sam Kirk mouthing off to Spock, his boss, and Pike offers no defense. Where's Sam Kirk's ST grit as an officer? The cadets aren't falling apart, but he is? Did also not care for the Alien plot imitation - where's the ST originality? The continuing Spock-Chapel friendship was a good end touch. Sorry. This was a downer for me. Hope the last episode picks up the ST vibe again.
A part of me was hoping that the monster of the week would be Salt Vampire(s) or something.
But I am glad we finally got more Gorn, and quite frankly, take them serious for once.
What if we get M'Ress and Arex next season? Unlikely I know; but that would make 7 year old me, very happy indeed!
So the security officer is gone for a while, but we all know what happens. Her shuttle gets picked up floating in space, and when she is taken out of stasis - she finds 60 years have passed by, and sadly the little girl had died along the way. So sad. I hate when that happens.
I enjoyed the episode, but I had a problem with the design of the Gorn. It's hard to reconcile the Gorn as an intelligent space-faring species in TOS to this version in SNW. At some level, they must mature into an advanced society closer in design to say, the "Predator." We know that they can build ships and all, but how have they advanced from being just blood-thirsty monsters to space travelers? In TOS, they seem not only to have the ability to reason but to be reasonable in a given situation. How do the Gorn in SNW mature into an organized technologically advanced society? Are they just a more savage version of Klingons, whose code of honor is just to hunt, eat and destroy any species, not Gorn?
The Gorn are a lot like the Nightwalkers and the Magog in Andromeda (another show imagined by Gene Roddenberry). The Nightwalkers reproduce like amphibians. They lay eggs in pools and their offsprings hatch like tadpoles. The tadpoles then eat each other and only a few are strong enough to go through their different stages of development. The Magog infest unwilling hosts. I think some of their intelligence come from the host.
I am the giving this a 9.5/10 as for NOW I will re-watch on Monday night at 10:00pm on CTV Sci-Fi channel here in Toronto Canada. I also like to listen to the reviews and see things I missed and hear others opinions, Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this episode TILL NEXT WEEK be well
Thank you for the review. I was surprised by this episode on many levels, one, I'm not a fan of horror, so I went into it not expecting to like it. I ended up loving it. While I am probably one of the few who had never seen Alien, its so much in the sci-fi culture and of course my friends had seen it, that I could spot those elements. It took another reviewer to also point out Predator and The Thing, with the cold and how the Gorn were slowed down and eventually defeated by it.
If it had only been a fight I don't think I would have enjoyed it, but loved it for the characters. The briefing while sitting together, the talks between characters, including the Spock-Kirk outburst and the light humor that I think only this crew could have pulled off.
It was easy to guess that the other Cadet and new LT would be the ones to go not just from they being the only two non-regular cast, but in the beginning, this newly mentioned cadet and right afterwards the promotion. Loved the buy him a drink tradition for getting the rank wrong and Spock's how many drinking games comment.
Another going out on a limb, but I think it was almost planned from the beginning of the series for Hemmer to go this early. Why, I'm not sure, it certainly is not due to popularity. My reasoning is he was only shown at the end of the first episode and then only a handful of times during the series, he was almost like a reoccurring character whom the rest of us were not told is a reoccurring character. Another stretch on this limb, but he almost seemed as part of Uhura's arc instead of his own. The way they met in Children of the Comet, the time together in Memento and the talks they had in this episode, which is probably why she will be coming back as Ensign Uhura.
La'an's growth was GREAT to see just from the one line Pike shared with her in episode one about surviving is more than just living, which comes full circle with her sharing it with this girl.
We've dealt with M'Benga's arc last week, La'an's and Uhura's this week, it is probably Pike's turn next week.
All in all, a great episode and thank you again Nick for sharing your thoughts with this review.
Where are the flamethrowers? That’s all I kept saying when the damn xenomorphs, I mean children of the Gorn were stalking the crew. Alas poor Hemmer, Shaka When the Walls Fell. He will be missed, enjoyed his character very much.
I like the shuttles!!
12:15 I'm not sure if it was just a slip of the tongue but just in case you don't know the idiom you meant to use was "Run the gamut" defined as to experience, display, or perform the complete range of something. Excellent review. I felt it very derivative of other shows almost to a point of being satirical and their attempt at a jump-scare was cringeworthy but it made up for these shortcomings with good acting and characters you can care about.
Okay it was Alien in trekverse even with Newt, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I know you hated last week's comedy romp but I've really enjoyed the whole series. Whilst The Orville has been very lacklustre I'll miss SNW when it ends next week. They are not shy of killing off a major character either. Good for them. I like the characters also. After three series of Discovery I couldn't tell you the names of the crew but this lot I can.
The Orville is holding its own. This episode is too much like Shadow Realms which was written a couple of years back before the lockdown.
So who is copying whom?
Hats off the A.E. Van Vogt- The Voyage of the Space Beagle.
@@CT-uv8os The Orville is so boring af and it’s a Star Trek knock-off. It doesn’t feel like it matters and ironically Star Trek in this has gotten better at being something for everyone without pushing one side of a political message TOO hard in your face like Seth Mcfarlane always wants to do. Star Trek has learned it’s lesson I
Great episode so far the best
I liked it better when it was called Aliens. However it was entertaining.
Like that Pike cooks like Sisko in DS9, I will miss Hemmer so much.
This is how Scotty comes in. Now the doctor will do something disgraceful to get demoted and Dr. McCoy comes in.
I agree and I think most will also that Hemmer was a great character and had wonderful possibility for interesting episodes. I would have LOVE to have gone back to Hemmer's home on a moon of Andoria
They TashaYar’ed Hemmer so early😭
I was thinking the whole time Aliens & Predator as well! It was a great episode! Loved it! So bummed to see Hemmer killed off?! But we know we need to have a young Scotty join the crew.
I think the crashed ship is a smaller version. Maybe 3/4 scale?
Perhaps my favorite episode so far. Has all the elements of great drama, even hints of unresolved romantic confusion, LOL! Hemmer’s death was a complete shock to me, & I get it. Scotty has to “beam up” to be THE Engineer at some point. At least Hemmer’s death was a noble & dignified passing, foreshadowing Spock’s death by self-sacrifice in Wrath of Khan as well as wagging a finger at Lt. Tasha Yar’s quick & emotionless death by the tar blob narcissist in TNG. Great episode! Good quirky review, Nick. You having so much silly fun - yeah I saw that chest bursting sweetiepie pop out - LOL - is a big reason why I watch ya here. And…will it come out that Capt. James Tiberius Kirk battled an elderly Gorn veteran slowed by numerous old injuries? Because he wouldn’t last a second against the reimagined Gorns. The one inconsistency - also in Momento Mori - is I find it hard to imagine how such a violent & cannibalistic species could ever cooperate to build a space faring civilization that later - what - joined the Federation? Makes no sense.
Not Simon Pegg, please. They are kind of rebooting since this pike is different from Bruce Greenwood and Spock is played by Ethan Peck over Zachary Quinto.
Hemmer is gone but his impact on you (and me) was obvious. His loss was something we didn't expect which from one standpoint is nice to see Star Trek SNW not being predictable.
If it like Discovery, we will get a new character with Hemmer out of makeup.
@@putinscat1208 I gave up on Star Trek DISCO two years ago. Total garbage
Gorn and Hirogen are natural buddies!
This star trek series is still the best i have seen in decades . Enterprise was quite good though for the most part . I feel the bosses of this show do need to make it easier to allow fans with ideas to put their ideas forward , to be looked at by a small body of readers to then pass on those stories that are unique , to the bosses and writers . as it is right now , it seems to be emails to agents or other people that we have no idea who they are . We also keep hearing that bosses and writers etc are soooo busy ( making rubbish ) quite often , That they can not promise to get back in touch or use your ideas ( because it may be binned without a glance ) . My thoughts on epesode 9 . Yes ... a little like Alien and Predator , But the gorn should be much like predator since predator was taken from Kirks fight with the gorn in the 60s . but good none the less . Reptiles and birds DO have heat vision That is a fact . As a person who lives with crows , and studied them closely i can say most birds when standing on a surface that carries vibration , like a branch can feel through their talons movement some distance away . They know where the prey is under ground as if it were on the surface , that is the heat vision . Crows can mimic other creatures .... fact . Why not the GORN . They got heat vision so lets give them the rest . Study all reptiles ... give the species the best of our reptiles . The spraying idea should not have been a reproductive thing though , more like the CAMODO dragon , a paralysing venom . Reproduction should have been , much like reptiles on earth would have made more sense . Not go for the ALIEN film direction .... My idea would be that '' HUMAN MEAT SACK '' as they are describe , have gorn eggs PLACED in the abdomen which is stitched up after the eggs are placed in , thus keeping them warm until hatching . Gory but more to cringe over when mentioning the name GORN . But you know ? there may be many ways a gorn actually reproduces , we only hear Sings view so who still knows at this point . Killing each other for dominance means they would be hard pressed to have a big number , since there would only be ONE left anywhere , So who is flying all the gorn ships . They must stop killing each other at a very young age in order for the species to grow . I would have the weakest or sick gorn killed like on earth Leaving the rest to grow . And not turn on each other all the time . Also on earth there are many types of human . I would have different types of gorn thus answering the 19.60s slow version question , to modern day faster version . If the bosses made it possible to be easier to reach , There might be NO questions to be answered . Special effects are outstanding and the acting is mostly really good . Over all , what a breath of fresh air compared to most of the rest of the star treks over the years . Sorry for the lengthy thought , but there it is .
12:15 The saying is 'run the gamut' not 'run the gambit'
Oh no… now I am going to sing “baby gorn do doooo doooo” the entire day! LOL 😂 0:39
Wow I didn't hate this season but I am glad that Star Trek fans have the Orville. I never liked STD or Picard. As far as this episode goes Too many melodramatic moments too many convenient scenarios. It's too much emotional drama for me.
Great episode but the death really angered me. It was unnecessary. We were just starting to get a sense of the character and then it's all over. They could have just kept him in the Enterprise's transporter buffer until they found a solution! LOL Oh well RIP to my favorite character on SNW.
Excellent actor-the great thing is that his make-up and prosthetics were so heavy that they can easily bring the actor back in another role and we wouldn’t even notice-maybe he’s gonna be the next Jeffrey Combs.
True but I would rather see quality than quantity. If a death angered you and tugged at you... it worked.
@@abstractedaway Yes. I agree.
Not down a communications officer. She is a character in TOS same as nurse Chapel. How could you even float the idea?
What series is due to air next after the finale of SNW next week?
Ship's Counselor Hemmer, now that would've had a ring to it!
I will say this about the episode. It is better then Prometheus and Alien Covenant.
Good one
I straight up skipped this episode when I saw the Xenomorph pop out. I should have known when Pike basically looked at the camera in the opening scenes and more or less said "Buckle up buckaroos, this episode's gonna suck." Seems like a lot of episodes start out with him saying "Let's take a risk, everything will be fine..." and then like 5 crew members die needlessly.
one of the writers from SNW was just on 7th Rule and said the actor who plays Hemmer will be back in future Trek productions. Kinda like Jeffrey Combs' trek thru Trek lol
i felt i was noticing alot of Aliens memes from this episode. The little girl was kind of like Newt. Hudson was very similar to how Kirks brother was acting..Great episode and series overall.
Great Review as usual !!!!!
I’m really ticked off at the loss of the most approachable character among the crew! I hope they find someway for the actor to remain involved in the show. He contributed much to the humanity on the ship...
I loved this episode, tied for numero tres with the other Gorn; therefore the Submarine and Horror episodes are in my top four with one more to go; so this is goodbye for Hemmer, we know Noonien returns because the actor talked about shooting a season two scene with Wesley.
We know Scotty's on the way, after all he was already on the Big E along with Spock, Uhura and Chapel; bring on Simon Pegg! Please
Maybe the Gorn babies are different depending which species they are grown in - the new Gorn do have tails. I loved Hemmer, but without his loss maybe Uhura would not have stayed....
Aside from the obvious tributes to Alien and Predator, there is some Reptile from Mortal Kombat in the design and in the death of the last gorn.
all those who wonder….if this is turning into another Kurtzman killing by numbers. suuuuper creative, definitely nothing we have ever seen before, like, alien, predator, godzilla, life,……ok, good production values anyways. Sense of family? the kull is coming, Kurtzman at the controls can quickly turn even this show into a dc 10.Picard anyone, with no one under 50 left standing?
The Children of the Gorn. Nick. RIP HEMMER
Gonna miss Hemmer
"Stop! Hemmer time!" my tribute to Hemmer from MC Hammer - U Can't Touch This
No dishwashing machines in this dystopian future.
So the Gorn are a combo of Alien and Predator. Cool.
Exactlt
Awesome episode. Why the producers choose to kill Hemmer so early? It was a real shock to me,..it is one of my favorite characters in this show. And, .... no red shirt death, but a golden shirt death.
Did the klingon empire eradicate the gorn?
Good morning Nick, I did like it and the Story was interesting, I see we are back to the problem of introducing new crew JUST TO KILL THEM.
So is Scotty gonna beam aboard now ? Who's going to play him ? Hope we get him by the end of thie next episode
Trans
Spock was more emotional in the original Trek trailer as well.
I was hoping for a "transporter miracle" to filter out the "Gorn Babies"
They couldnt detect it in the body of that alien . I think the doctor said the eggs werent reading on the scans.
Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Predator all merged in elements here. Still fun and the fact that people were upset about Hemmer dying shows this show is doing a better job at developing characters, even minor ones, than man others out there (cough...cough...Star Wars).
Not really. They had a character named Wade that was on obi wan Kenobi TV show that had character development for 53 seconds.
He died in a ship rescuing obi wan Kenobi and you would have thought the Pope died , the way the characters reacted to his death.
La'An and Chapel are still both my favorite females in this show. They both worked well in the episode too. Except for when La'An yelled at the Gorn to come and get her.
@FromSiberia Why is it that whenever people hate characters like, they always sound like they try and take it away from me?
@FromSiberia Sorry, man. I got no reason to hate this character and I'm sorry for those who don't. I've hated worser characters and we'll just have to agree to disagree.
La’an was the best character
@@Tsar-Trek Now we're talking.
I think Hemmer will survive because of the cold and the Gorn being so easily succumb by it. Well there's hope anyway. If Hemmer gets cold enough it might kill the Gorn?
What about the fact he jumped off the cliff and fell 100m+ to the bottom of the canyon?
@@Sci-Finatics True but we never seen him going down or where he landed. I'm just saying.
My review is going up on my channel now. Another solid episode.
Hmmm...upload error is unknown or unspecified...
Kinda like last week.
Whom do ya have to payoff at @UA-cam???
Huh....had to convert it to an AVI file for some Strange New Reason
m.ua-cam.com/video/K_L26qjSMNs/v-deo.html
Absolutely enjoyed as well. Not my Fav still but awesome Special effects. I Enjoy the eating meal scenes cause i mean your in space with these people you need to know each other. Same as us here in the Hospital..We have meals like that too so totally get it.
So pissed off and angry they killed off Hemmer. And it is worse finding out they bought the character in as a prop to get Uhura to stay. No wonder he disappeared for so long middle of the season. They never intended to flesh out or explore his character.
I thought they didn't know the going util Kirk time as captain?
we need 20 episode's next session.
For me this is already one of the best star treks, but if they add Simon Pegg as Scotty next season I think they'll really have done the franchise a major service by really bring the Kelvin Timeline into the fold.
I agree, and actually feel Simon, at 52 years, is a bit too old now to be playing a young 20 - 30 something Scotty...
Are they in the Kelvin universe?
@@suzygirl1843 no of course not, but kelvin is a splinter universe, so the characters looking the same makes sense
@@michaellucci132 Literally, they already recast half the main crew: Spock, Uhura, Pike, Samuel Kirk. It would be jarring to have Simon Pegg where he'd be the outlier and an established movie actor. Better if they got Jack Quaid who already replaced him in The Boys. Seems like his character might die on that series anyway.
@@suzygirl1843 ...Good question! ....No, they aren't in the Kelvin timeline.
Might be the strongest first season of trek out there. I wish Hemmer hadn't died , but i hope he is replaced by another alien cast member
I really hate the ending of this episode, I really do. Ever since the first SNW trailers, Hemmer become my favorite character, and after watching episode 8, I was really excited for a Hemmer episode. I mean what's the point of making Hemmer a likable character if the show creators just killed him off late in the season. I was expecting to see his family background and personal life, I'm so disappointed.
I imagine there were some practical concerns to writing Hemmer out. Probably pretty tough for a blind guy to work on such a technically sophisticated show.
And hey.....he WAS wearing a red shirt
I think he was designed to show you the stakes of the Gorn threat. They must be taken seriously. And to do that we designed a likable character to die on purpose to push that narrative.
Finally a kirk is show
This is my favorite star trek episode since Aliens.
I'm just wondering if they're going to pull a season 1 of Discovery and show Kirk in some way or another!
Kirk will be in season 2, which already finished shooting.
It will premiere sometime In 2023.
@@kev30631 Um, yes, but I'm saying that it would make an interesting cameo to close out s1 given that he'll be in season 2.
