    Hemmers death and laan's leaving made this feel more reeel than just red shirt deaths. That said it probably has to go down that path because it comes with being a prequel.

    Why does EVERYONE keep missing the fact that Uhura's journey of initially wanting to leave but being talked into stay is a DIRECT reference to Nichelle Nicholes' journey to being talked into staying with Star Trek by Martin Luther King Jr.? In the US NAVY, having similar ships that are different is NOT an unusual thing. Spruance class and Kidd class destroyers are examples of this. IT'S NOT UNUSUAL!!

    • @valueofnothing2487
      @valueofnothing2487 2 роки тому

      Because you should not write in reference. That is the problem with writing today. DS9 had an episode of police brutality on an African American. This episode had Uhura ripping of the tune of Close Encounters. SNW has horror, Love Boat and Freaky Friday. It is a disgrace in my opinion.
      Nichele Nichols also wanted to leave Star Trek S3 as well to have a 5 year contract on Mannix. Maybe she made a mistake - even though her mistake would be our gain.

    • @Knightshade08

      @@valueofnothing2487 not writing in references is unrealistic beyond measure. It’s done so often there’s a term for it, “Easter eggs”.

    I think they killed off Hemmer with grace and nobility as they killed off Spock 40 years ago. Sacrifice and courage in facing painful death.
    That upset uberfans then too, but Nimoy wanted to move on...then changed his mind after he actually enjoyed filming TWoK. This actor obviously didn't intend to stay past S1 and only had about 40 minutes of screen time in 540minutes of SNW to date.
    A group of fans in 82, threatened Nimoys family and the producers when GR leaked the surprise ending, because he was mad at being shut out by Paramount after his erratic actions producing TMP. That really happened...fans threatened the real Leonard Nimoy and his family.
    Get a grip...it is just a character, and actors have plans IRL.

      They can easily restore continuity with TOS, by establishing that mercurial quickness and egg-laying capability are attributes not shared by the male of the Gorn species. Males embody enormous stature, strength, and toughness while being almost glacial in their movements. Female Gorn aren't given command because they're too preoccupied with matters pertaining to reproduction. They are tactical thinkers rather than strategic.

    I would have really liked if the second starship would have been something akin to a SNW era Miranda class. Different from the outside, but quite similar to the Connie on the inside. The way they did it, I wondered why they didn‘t just declare it another Constitution Class, as it looks 100% similar inside and out. The only spotable difference is that everything that is painted red on Enterprise is painted blue on the Perregrine instead. Seems a bit like they cheaped out of having to create another CGI model for the guest ship, at the last minute…

    One thing that I was unsure about was how the Gorn managed to defeat a whole ship with 90ish crew members. At first, it didn't make sense to me but then I thought about how easy it is for them to infect other species with their eggs. I could imagine it almost being a combination of zombies and aliens. It might start out with just a few (3-4) baby Gorn that kill a couple crew members, go and hide and start ambushing the crew--killing some but infecting others. Like we saw happen to the away team. Soon you could have a dozen (4 infected crew could get you there even if the hatchlings kill some of their own) or more Gorn running around and the cycle would repeat. Especially since at first the crew probably wouldn't understand how people were getting infected--it could result in "safe" areas all of a sudden being overrun by Gorn. I think they should do a graphic novel all about the fall of the USS Peregrine--perhaps told from the perspective of that little girl that survived? That could be a good but scary story to read...

  • @darongw
    @darongw 2 роки тому

    It seems like the Gorn change dramatically as they mature. Kinda like various insect species on Earth--look at ladybug larvae compared to ladybug adults. The larvae are voracious predators with a very different body shape and can't fly. But the adults while still being predators are a bit different in their behavior. Another example are dragonflies when they're nymphs in the water and then fly as adults and stay out of the water. I wonder if the Gorn as adults have more of a developed culture and are more like the Hirogen from Voyager. Still aggressive hunters but with a developed culture--this would fit with the Gorn we saw in TOS. Though I also really like the idea of Gorn casts like the books explored. I wonder if another Star Trek show set after the TOS time period will explore what happened with the Gorn after that TOS episode where Kirk fought the Gorn captain... It's interesting that we go from this week's horror episode and the Gorn being described as evil to at least one Gorn running or at least working at a restaurant on a Federation space station in Lower Decks. Seems like peace was made to a point--at least the Gorn are much more than just evil predators. I would love to see episodes that explored that development.

    That episode was really weird, I don't understand why they made Aliens from Gorns, they were lizards, I hope they will explain it more, but it seems really odd to me. How could that creature grow up so fast from nothing? It was still well filmed episode, but it looks like they just wanted make their own version of Alien instead of doing StarTrek. Also Hemmer.....why???? I don't want Scotty and Kirk already in season 2.
    This is the first episode I have some problems with. I am not saying it's bad, but it's really weird episode and I don't remember that Kirk's Gorn was spiting some accid sperm something, Gorns are just lizard like humanoids, not a parasite horror creatures. I hope they will explain their life cyclus better in future.

We lose Hemmer which is a big loss to this cast, the "horror" theme is also not ST - ST shows bad stuff happens and we've been plenty scared by other ST shows but this felt like a "rip off" of Alien, and what was with Sam Kirk's meltdown? The cadets are cool in a crisis but this ST officer is freaking out? I like the continued exploration of Spock's character and thought the end scenes with he and Chapel were a great expansion of their friendship. Hemmer's death kinda gutted the episode for me, and not in a good way. It felt like such a GOTCHA moment and playing into old tropes about Inspiring Disabled Character Dies/Suffers For Sake Of Abled Characters Around Them. I was really hoping for more delving into his character about his own motivations, why he believes so strongly in Starfleet, how he reconciled being in it compared to the isolationist Aenar we met back in ENT... but instead he's sacrificed to give Uhura character growth. :\ Especially disappointing when you have characters shouting possible ways to keep him alive to try and fix this and it's just "no no, I gotta die now, byyyye" ignored, even when a literal huge plot point of the season was keeping someone in transporter stasis for medical reasons! Just.... UGH. :\
    To not leave a totally negative comment, the cinematography and puppets were fantastic, and the makeup for Buckley was fantastic.

    Lost a lot of respect for this show because of this episode, the Gorn are supposed to besuper intelligent starship building space exploring warp drive building warriors, but they are a supersized Geko that are a ripoff of the Alien franchise that try to kill each other at birth that run like a dog, but build spaceships that hunt down the Federation - WTF?!?!?!?

      I think hopefully they are going to realize that the gorn was a bad idea. And we are going to see them quietly disappear like the doctors daughter.
