      He said on a podcast that he sees homer as the archetypal good father... maybe a fool but he's conscientious and empathetic... he has a high level of obligation towards his family because often he looses his job and is deep in distress because of it. Peterson seems to love homer and Pinocchio lol

    Awesome talk! I just started reading "Man and his symbols" by Carl Jung. I so wish school (middle or high school) taught some psychology. So many people desperately need mental clarity and don't have the tools to achieve it (nor the money for a good psychologist)

      Andrew Malcolm I had a dream last night that all my friends were looking old, all with extra wrinkles and balding heads. My one friend who’s gone off the map recently showed up in the dream obese and almost unrecognizable.
      Suppose the dream was telling me to get the hell on with my life, cause time is going by fast now that we’re in our mid-20s, and there’s nothing we can do to slow it down

      @@KosmicAura Please be informed that it is a dream common to many people. The psychoanalysis has suggested the chasing dream is usually a reference to a task/issue/person in hand which you think you should not avoid, yet you are. It is a way of the task to get your attention.
      At 23 one can multiple of those things, the reading suggests that usually within 48 hours you should be exposed/reminded of the task/issue/person of whom you are dreaming ( The chaser).

      Just stared at the "Christina's World" painting after perusing art prints to put up in my apartment, at JBP's insistence (after a thorough room cleaning of course) . That painting gives me such an overwhelming sense of displacement and existential terror it makes me feel like I'm in a waking nightmare. A print of it used to hang in my grandma's house, and I'd stare at it in wonder when I was a kid. I found this video after searching "JBP nightmares". Fucking weird shit man

    • @DimljenaRiba
      @DimljenaRiba 6 років тому +1

      Alex Farrell according to Freud - and that would be also my best guess - loosing teeth is a integrated sensation. While you sleep you often change positions, if it happen that you apply pressure to your teeth it simply gets integrated in your dream as loosing teeth. Similar things can happen to the sound of the alarm or if you have to pee while sleeping (dreaming of going to the toilet). There is a lot of symbolic meaning in dreams though not everything needs to be symbolic.

    I had three dreams in one night that involved guns, or possible even all three involved shooting. I can't remember one of them. But either in two I was the villain and in one I was the hero or the other way around. When I woke up I thought about the dreams and the progression seemed to be if I second guess my intuition I will suffer, if I don't act on my intuition I will suffer, and if I trust my intuition I will succeed.
    But, that I was aware of, I didn't have any on going situation in my life that I could apply the lesson to.🤔

    I keep having extremely vivid nightmares or anxiety based dreams that end with me being killed, and waking to a cold sweat and a racing heartbeat. The last one I remember was being shot in the head; I felt the impact of the bullet, the exit wound, my head fall and hit something, and then the blood seeping out of the entry point. Been dealing with these types of dreams for a few years now, and sometimes it'll be several nightmares that shake me awake in the night, on the hour.

      JBP's nephew had a recurring night terror that apparently stopped when JBP asked his nephew what he would do to overcome it. Maybe if you consciously think about how you could deal with the dream scenario next time, subconsciously it might stop, probably only works if it's recurring. I find regularly exercise also works well to reduce anxiety based night terrors.

      Well, having grown up around guns I'm very familiar with them. Having been muzzled on two occasions has really jarred me but I think anyone would be by it. I'm diagnosed GAD, generally very anxious and minor stressors can send me into a panic, depending on my mood. That could have something to do with it.

    I had a dream last year (nightmare), that i was running, breath heavy, heart pounding, away from a rather HUGE Medussa. She was chasing me down a huge hallway, and was gaining on me. I turned a corner and ahead of me i saw a wardrobe. So, i ran into it. The next thing i heard was 'come on out sonia' from medussa in a taunting voice, and i then woke up. When i woke, i remember feeling petrified. I can also vividly remember the dream now, unlike some that just fade away...i would love if anyone can interpret that for me.

    • @Ndo01
      @Ndo01 7 років тому +6

      Medusa is kind of analogous to the basilisk myth in the way that if you look directly at it, you get turned into stone which represents a primal fear response. Maybe you have a problem that can't be solved through direct means, like how Perseus used his reflective shield to look at Medusa; looking at the problem from an alternate angle. In some stories the monster is defeated by showing it it's own face.

    I took a very large dose of mushrooms back in December that went horribly wrong, and now all of my most deep-seated fears and demons are running rampant in my dream state.
    The other night, I dreamt I was in a rainforest canopy lying about with a bunch of tigers and the sun was shining bright as could be down on us all. There were maybe 6 or 7 of them, and they were engaging with one another and myself in a very playful manner. Then suddenly I was thrust to the forest floor and felt the supreme urge to flee, when briefly I looked back and saw a shadowy figure hugging a tree corner. I took a few paces back toward it, grabbed onto a felled tree in front of me, and proceeded to roar and snarl at it. The thing produced itself from behind the true and took the form of a large, quite muscular black panther with beady yellow eyes and large teeth. It slowly crept toward me, peering right into my soul with its eyes and showing the full extent of its agility and ability to devour me. It felt very clear to me that it was saying "you're not welcome here".
    At that point, I was thrust into the air above the treeline and soared into the sky far away from the scene. All the while, I could hear and see the panther below climbing the trees with great determination to make damn sure I got out of there. Then I awoke.
    I think this dream is telling me something about my current relationship, which is polyamorous in nature. There have been no great or lasting extensions made outside the main relationship yet, but the layout of this aforementioned dream gives me cause for concern about deep, unbeknownst fears surrounding love and commitment. The panther to me is a protector, trying to keep me from a situation that it knows is no good.
    The deep dream state has now given way to insomnia, and the decline in any semblance of psychological wellbeing or clear mental agency is slowly dwindling. I think it's time for me to act. Thoughts?

    • @junjujinz
      @junjujinz 5 років тому

      Perhaps the panther represents your fear of being replaced by another man. The tigers seem to be symbolic of those within your poly relationship; they are a threat to you (your relationship), but have remained playful and harmless in nature, yet they still are very much capable of hurting you. Based on this, I’d imagine the Panther represents a man (even a woman) that you fear may present themselves and usurp you as a main character in your relationship. Do you have concerns that your partner may become more attracted to another person over you? Do you have concerns that the introduction of this theoretical (or actual) person will push you out of your relationship with your partner?
      I’m no psychologist, nor an analyzer of dreams, but I am a man, and as a man I know that the fear of your partner replacing you for another person is very real, especially in an open-ended relationship like that.
      Something to consider.

    I'm just trying to figure out what my dream meant I had in my childhood..
    I woke up at night terrified, the wall next to my bed had words written in fire " I am your one and only God and you shall only serve me" and it ended with an eye opening and looking around my room and closing taking the words with it ..I screamed for my dad and told him everything... I had a religious upbringing so I assume it has something to do with that..but what really bothered me Is that it wasn't in my native language, and I couldn't formulate my own sentences in English back then...but I knew what the words on the wall meant
    Anyway as I got older getting involved in online debates I ironically identified myself as atheist.. no watching Dr Peterson videos I can't say I'm atheist but don't believe in an all knowing being as the Christians portray him to be...
    Would actually be interesting if someone can give their opinion on it? Is it because of my religious upbringing?

    Dr. Peterson, I am one of those “Lucid Dreamers” you refer to on occasion. A creative, writer, screenwriter, fabricator and disciplined in a number of artistic skills. At 56 years of age, I believe now have the wisdom to know far more of my curse of nightly, interactive nightmares than I did some ago. I rarely dream pleasant or “normal” dreams; rather during a typical week I may average five nights out of seven, experiencing full-out nightmares. The type that reach your soul. Some nights I experience multiple nightmares of two or more. Having started loosely keeping a log, I have found that they usually take place in three settings, (reoccurring) with others taking place at random locations. They are almost ALWAYS in bright, vivid colors. Some colors which I’ve never even seen on any spectrum chart... difficult to explain, but almost neon in nature. These nightmares are typically comprised by not just predatory animals, but with some sort of hybrid beasts which do not exist in the known world. These are not very nice puppies. I will not get into much more detail, but somehow I’m always able to deter an animal or pack of these beasts away from me using eye contact and pure will, but with no verbal commands. Once this happens, I tap into their minds, and... This is just one scenario of a reoccurring nightmare and with each I seem to unwittingly hone these abilities, knowing full well that I am in a dream and in control. I even know how much cash is in my jeans once I wake up and what I have to do. At times, I am cognizant of how much time I have before I need to wake. Not sure, but I believe there aren’t many out there who dream like this. I may be wrong.

    When I was a younger child, I used to have night terrors. Not the really bad dream type, but the get up out of the bed eyes open still in my dream seeing the most horrific things you could imagine while running through my house usually screaming-type. This happened at least a few times. Once my parents found me in the bathroom shaking with fear and tried to approach to wake me up and console me. I saw them as monsters or demons or something and began to scream and swipe at them like a scared animal. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my craziness but my mom freaked out and took me to a doctor. They said it happens to some kids and that I should stop having them by puberty. Which I did. But my dreams have always been vivid and sometimes strange even since. I don't know what it means. I'm not making it up.

    Lately I've been having night terrors. My dreams are fucked up. Like really fucked up. There was one a few weeks ago that was particularly disturbing and paericularly vivid. These men were going to cut my hands of with a stanley knife. I've never experienced fear like that in my life. I wonder what that meant? 😂

      Hands tend to be our primary tools for interacting and taking control of our immediate environment. Knives can symbolize severing, which is the threat. Maybe on some level in your life, control is being taken from you against your will.

    I had a dream that my 5 year oldish self was cannibalizes by a close family friend and I know it makes zero sense but my present adult self in the dream stumbled accidentally across my own remains that had been turned into sausages that were then disgustingly crafted and displayed by the “killer” in a kind of human sausage model house like a gingerbread house except it was made from human sausage and rib cages. In the dream I had a flashback of my childhood self being lead away from this shopping mall and then it didn’t show my murder but it fast forwarded to the end result and it was extremely disturbing. I remember I had confronted the person that did it and they had been doing it to other people for a while and had been getting away with it for so long that they were extremely annoyed that I had attempted to have them arrested and at first no one took me seriously but then all of a sudden I had people trying to protect me from this serial killer that turned into kind of a Hannibal lector that all of a sudden had a craving to relive the experience of turning my childhood self into sausage and was then stalking me again as my adult self. My nightmare was me being protected by these body guards and being chased and having to hide from this Hannibal character and always being just one step ahead. It was extremely stressful being chased because I felt like no matter what I did this killer was always out witting my hiding spots and injuring the body guards y shooting at them and me from hidden places but the body guards continued to keep on protecting me and the killer sometimes would almost catch up to me to be just close enough to torment me. He would laugh and tease me by telling me how much they enjoyed turning my childhood self into the human sausage display. Then I’d see these vivid flashbacks of the events leading up to my death and then I’d be trying to go back in time to try to warn myself of the danger of being lured away..then I’d almost switch back to my younger self and experience the pain of actually being chopped up and the fear I felt just before he killed me and just feeling helpless and scared but it never changed how the ending would be despite all my efforts to save myself and I’d end up having to witness the same thing again and again. It was horrific. I woke up never knowing what the ending was but I felt exhausted and all day I’ve felt kind of freaked out about the whole thing..wonder why I would of had a nightmare like that, it was really out of the ordinary and it felt very real and terrible. I’m kind of freaked out to go to sleep tonight because sometimes the nightmare has a continuation of where I left off but at the same time I want to know how it ends but I don’t want to have to relive the whole experience again. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

    • @johopahopa
      @johopahopa 3 роки тому

      At least you had the body guards! I’ve had a similar feeling dream but without the guards and it was also very stressful. The dream ended before ever being caught by the mystery person but I almost want to dive back into the dream but with a different narrative in mind. This could be a sense of having the upper hand and almost a fun/ninja type of approach to it lol kind of diminishing the threat and putting myself and the following stalker person on an even playing field. Like I could follow them almost.
      It’s probably hard to do when first going to sleep, But if you wake up half way through the dream you could try take that approach when trying to fall asleep again. Another powerful thing is to confront the threat head on in the dream if you know it’s just a dream.
      Easier said than done of course!
      But it is a fun challenge!

    so we dream because jesus is talking to us... the lord works in mysterious ways.... joseph interrupted the king's dream. we will have 7 fat years and 7 lean years. Make my people, the jews, the real rulers of egypt, use their intellect and engineering skills to build three huge pyramidoid shaped silos. Thus sayeth the lord. And, from the new testament we read, jesus sat his 5000 hungry people on the side of a hill and taught. They were hungry. He opened the hill (pyramid) and made un-levant bread. fed the 5000 bread and bullshit.

      Take nightmares.
      Consider what is it you’re scared of? Cause dreams are symbolic, language based. What we see in the manifest dream is a distorted, chopped, altered version of what it is in the unconscious.
      That might be unknowable, maybe it’s scarier than that in which we see in the dream cause it has undergone change to become acceptable to the conscious mind.

      DukeDolman Ask your girlfriend to meditate about the unique intrinsic meaning association with the dream. No one can answer it's meaning, especially not a tiny description on Google. Lol! She'll have to write the vivid dream down on paper, delve into the spider's representation through meditation (simply ask what it's supposed to mean) and discover what her internal message is to herself. Once she gets clarification, confronts the next step, she'll stop dreaming about spiders. I used to dream about spiders too, it was in relation to feeling unsafe in my environment- once I moved it stopped; who knows what her relation is, but it's something she can conquer. Best of luck!

    Hi Jordan, please keep up the good work. My question is, what do you know about the release of DMT when we dream? We have a new feature film, TRICKSTER coming out in theaters soon that has this question in it's subtext, as well as many more questions posed by the ancient myths made popular by Joseph Campbell. You can see the OFFICIAL TRAILER here: ua-cam.com/video/37D_OKat0Ng/v-deo.html Love to know your thoughts.

    There's no real evidence whatsoever that dreams mean anything at all. You can _impose_ a meaning onto a dream -- which as often as not may well have been "edited" into a coherent narrative by the dreamer after the fact. If a trained person can shed a "brighter" light on it, it just means the training has given him a richer symbolic vocabulary to draw on for creating a meta-narrative about the dream. Which is fine, but that's still a long way from the dream having any inherent meaning.
    Thing is, we _feel_ dreams are meaningful, and we _want_ them to mean something, so we assume meaning whether it's really there or not. It would be nice if someone of Peterson's stature could look at this critically rather than simply accept the assumption.

    • @rolandxb3581
      @rolandxb3581 7 років тому +13

      ChrisC Yeah if you're skeptical enough, you can reject everything. That's really helpful.
      I get it though, but look at it like this: dreams tell you something about yourself, your unconscious. It's usually things that bother you in one way or another, or trains of thought. So it's reasonable to suppose you can learn something from them, because they're about you.
      The meta-question is: when is a dream inherently meaningful? What's the criterion? If it must be empirically testable in a rigorous manner and reflect the metaphysical structure of the world, that's too high a bar. However, if people recognize things they struggle with in a dream and if they extract something out of it that helps them deal with their problem, that'd be more than enough for me to take dreams at least a bit seriously, even though there were no clinical trials.

    • @the-chillian
      @the-chillian 7 років тому +2

      It's not being overly skeptical to reject a claim presented with no evidence whatsoever, and a cynical sneer is no real objection.
      Never mind empirical testing, just anything not more implausible than the explanation I offered. At least, what I said is something we know human beings actually do when presented with a set of random symbols that are claimed to be meaningful, but which really aren't. That's exactly how tarot card readings work. The proposition that dreams are actually meaningful in and of themselves? Not so much.

    • @rolandxb3581
      @rolandxb3581 7 років тому +3

      "No evidence whatsoever" is just not fair to Peterson; that's what I tried to say. It's overly skeptical.
      And I just offered an alternative: dreams are created by our brains unconsciously, so they can probably tell us something about ourselves. If they tell us something about ourselves and what troubles us, they have some kind of meaning. And that's exactly the difference with tarot cards: they are not simply a set of random symbols.

      Of course it's fair. He didn't provide any evidence, and you certainly didn't either. He assumed, and you assumed.
      Yes, you offered an alternative. It's not more credible, since it relies on a fact we don't know is true. IS that what our brains are doing when we dream? If you say "yes", you're claiming more than anyone actually knows.
