In this video I use my 1996 Honda VFR 750 to show you how the fuel system works on a motorcycle. Its not as simple as fuel from the tank to the carburetors. Between the fuel tank and the carburetors there is usually a fuel filter, a fuel pump and a fuel cut off relay. And what very few are aware of is that the fuel system is controlled by the engine control module (ECM) and the battery.

Thanks for doing this video! I started my VFR up after a while standing, and when running/ turning it pisses fuel out from above the carbs, which I couldn't work out. Must be a split hose up there or something? I did not know carbed bikes had fuel pumps 🤭

I cleaned, repaired my carbs last fall, hardly used the vfr 750 1990 sinse, smelled fuel the other day, filled the engine with fuel.
    2nd time now.
I did fit 2nd hand float needle jets from a 1989 cbr600f looked exactly the same but nowhere near as worn as the stock ones i took out. Never flooded in being stood for months until yesterday.
Fuel pump? Petcock? Pet cock i switched off after the repair i don't want to waste oil and also damage the engine etc...
It always ran awesome when on it never skipped a beat and went like a rocket and now it runs sweet on idle and always did after i repaired, cleaned out carbies and replaced those float needle jets, are the needle jet seats worn out maybe or one or 2 of them could be so when the petcock was on...fuel pushed passed them?

Floats in carbs can get stuck and that can allow fuel to flood the cylinder

@@TheMotorcycleMuse ok all checked and are ok but yes true . I'm just going to shut off the petcock as when riding it's always fine..all jets etc where all removed and cleaned replaced last fall, used the bike a few times then laid up for months ,i only put the fuel tap on n left it maybe 6 weeks ago and took all that time to finally flood the engine. All removed and rebuilt again with fresh oil and ran fine again ,now shut of the petcock as i believe too that they can be probematic and even fuel pumps that are failing or faulty can too cause a flooded engine with the fuel tap left open.

my vfr has new sparks, carbs cleaned and synced, new regulator, oils, filters, everything in order. It hapenned twice in 8000 kms after running several kms that the bike died like if it was without spark or fuel, some minutes after could start again and runs like if nothing happen. Can it be the cut off relay or fuel pump? Never change that.

appreciate it sir, that is awesome informative video. dealing with some issues here when bike starts and dies as soon as i touch the accelerator. suspecting the pump as it does not every time even if connected directly to the battery without any fuel lines.

I am having a problem with my fuel pump relay. I have bought a new one, and I have tested the fuel pump by bypassing the relay. The battery has been charged and output checked. I have checked voltage to relay and to fuel pump when bypassed. But nada when I put the relay in the mix. Any ideas? Anyone?

I replaced the entire fuel system on my shadow 750. Do I need to somehow prime the system or just try to start it?

Fuel will probably need to be pumped to the carb float bowls but if the float bowls were never emptied then it should start fine and the pump should start flowing back into them after a few seconds from the pump.

    The lamest description ever.
It was complete to the fuel pressure shutoff valve on the fuel pump fluid inspection. Without the carbon vapor the thing won't fire right anyway..

there is a clicking noise coming from around the fuel pump every 10 seconds or so while the engine is running. idk what happened. the bike starts and runs fine but this is strange

Same here but based on what he explains at the end of the vid I think its okay? It only pumps when the valves are open behind the floater bowl in the carbs

If it clicks it means it's pumping. You should be worried when it starts clicking continuosly (no fuel or pump not able to maintain pressure).
