Glad Clown and Duck talked about some of the criticisms that Nerd's latest video received, because I was left with a very bad taste in my mouth after watching it. I wish they had pushed back a bit harder, but at least some of it was cleared up. I'm somehow really happy to hear Nicky called him crazy for including the line that Gary is not malevolent, because it was really jarring. To me at least it was completely unclear that it was supposed to be Dr. Downvote talking. I also think the criticism Nerd had of Line Goes Up, that it put him into a funk and that it's inherently anti-capitalist, is ridiculous. But I'm really interested in a video explaining his thoughts on it, so very much looking forward to that!
i love episodes w nerd. he has such a small presence on youtube because his content is so information dense that its really interesting to listen in a more relaxed and ready-fire-aim environment. i hope he keeps showing up for these episodes, and i hope he realizes that he doesnt have to put too much thought or effort into these episodes; we love that hes just there

ngl, I'm not much of a podcast guy, but this is probably the only one I come back to and listen to full episodes within a few days of them coming out. There's a great rapport between Colossal and Nerd especially, but Dolan gets on well with everyone and Pyro both contributes and puts up with the constant teasing really well. Well, when he's not in a post-Cruelty-Squad coma, that is, which he seemed to be today. Glad to have gotten follow-on to the Gary V stuff-- the NC video was great, but getting a behind-the-scenes look into how that video evolved and why was great. Colossal's ad break voices are the best 😂 absolutely unhinged. Warning, wall of text: As someone on the left, and a cybersecurity and comp sci guy, I think NC might have a bit of a misunderstanding of why a lotta lefties don't like crypto-- while certainly you've got 'leftist' and 'socialist' influencers like Hasan who are just happy to see something they mentally associate with capitalism and greed being shit on, in my case and those of a lot of my peers in leftie spaces we largely feel like cryptocurrencies as currently implemented today are: 1) wildly inefficient and wasteful in terms of space and power consumption for what they actually transact, 2) serve more effectively as a means of money laundering and hiding cash from legitimate taxation than as actual legal tender for daily use, and 3) frequently try to use the language of lifting up the working class and the disenfranchised with no actual plan or intention of sharing wealth and helping those in need-- to the point of faking educational courses in crypto investing in impoverished nations while actively seeking to dump their bags on new investors in the space. While I have endless criticisms for the structural incentives and greedy behaviors of people in the regular financial systems around the world, I see modern crypto as an even worse version of those. More wasteful, more prone to fraud and market manipulation, and happy to lie to desperate people in need about both of those things in order to bring in more users and make more money for themselves. The fact that only wealthy and well-connected people tend to get compensated or get a rollback or fork when things go bad just reinforces the idea that as things stand crypto isn't fixing the problems and inequality in our financial systems, only serving as another avenue by which those things happen. It's good that regulation is coming, but it's slow to come and will be even slower to bring any repercussions to the bad actors or justice to the exploited. Could the cryptographic technology of the blockchain system serve some legitimate purpose in verifying and backing up transaction histories? Sure! But until use cases emerge which are verifiably more efficient and transparent and accountable than existing standards, why would we ever support them as something to better the lives of people in need? The people struggling under existing financial systems don't need a new and experimental currency system with a thousand new issues to fix, they need food, water, debt relief, medical aid, etc. We can absolutely work on and find ways to use crypto going forward, but as a leftie I have rarely if ever found a use case that helps the things I care most about changing, and it gets really tiring to have people online and in the tech space keep trying to bring it up and pose it as a potential solution to problems which it just isn't cut out to solve right now or discussing the nuances of a techno-financial system which is such a mess right now when there are genuine real-world problems that we could be spending time trying to work on instead. And just to be clear, I think the use of the tokens for access to educational content and streams like NC does is fine! It's probably the best use case for the tech out there today, and I'm glad that he managed to find a good way to mix art, crypto, and utility. No shade there. Anything that helps legit educators and artists I'm in favor of, and this seems like an actual use case where NFTs could be a good solution. I just wanted to throw out an explanation for why a lot of left-leaning online folks tend to gravitate towards dislike of crypto in general and don't call out people mocking the field for misinformation or strawmanning as much as we probably should. Tough to want to go to bat for a technology and online trend that you don't see as particularly helpful in most cases and certainly not helpful for the things which matter most to you. TL;DR - don't think the technology as it exists today is actually fixing the biggest issues with modern financial systems; don't see a use case for it to address the things I care about as a self-proclaimed leftie; get tired of discussing it in my job in tech and in online discussions when I've spent more time than most actually studying it and researching applications; glad it's working for Nerd; sorry so many online asshats have been making that hard and frustrating for you TL;DR TL;DR - Karl Marx appeared to me in a dream once and told me that crypto was bad so I don't like it :(
@23Butanedione I was gonna try and think of a smarmy response or quip, but tbh I'm just too tired right now and I'm weary of trying to put a lighthearted spin on things. Yeah, I personally feel like a lot of the time and energy spent arguing over how best to use crypto as it is today would be better spent doing things to help build the world up around us and to help those in need. But I'm already not spending much time discussing it anymore, and when it comes to other people it's not my choice to make or my time to spend. I do admire your optimism in assuming my ancestors (ancestress?) had or have much of anything to leave behind for me. My family is mostly Irish immigrants, they spent several hundred years working to get basically nothing under the British and then were told to fuck off and leave when they tried to find work in American cities. The only thing to pass down would be the old ranch on terrible land in the middle of nowhere, and my branch of the family didn't even inherit that. The greatest fruits of their lives of labor for me have been access to a decent education and an easier path into the military, and I'm already working to pay that forward by volunteering and teaching in schools where I can and speaking up in support of other vets going through it. It's not much, but it's all I can do right now to really help IRL with the limited time I've got. I'm sure you're doing the same with the things you can do to help others IRL. We gotta work with what we have, little though that might be
this!!! as a fan of his content, it felt a bit odd how nerd was describing what the left thinks about crypto and some of the points he brought up about the left, specifically the part of the spectrum where people like Hasan fall under, were definitely very tired and even misleading.

I understand the criticism of Hasan but not really munecat’s. Nerd’s whole argument was that “she shouldn’t be taken seriously because she’s a bad actor because she made a right click joke”. Completely throwing away an entire video (with excellent points btw) because of a joke to peddle your pet project, ironically is nerd acting in bad faith, imagine if people threw away any of his videos for making a joke?
