One thing you missed on boxing, boxing deals with alot strength and conditioning as well footwork. Boxing depending how good you are you can end a fight alot quicker than doing BJJ with knock outs.

Learn both: boxing( striking) helps you to be able to manage multiple attacker situations and run.Bjj, wrestling or judo helps neutralize people where striking is not necessary.

Geoff was a bouncer in the UK for 10 years and he said in his books what got him out of trouble 99 per cent of the time was basic boxing and preemtive strikes.

Nothing but respect for both arts but here are some of my thoughts about boxing and why I think it's better than is being presented here:
    1. Regarding injury and legal ramifications: you can hit someone in the body and knock them out depending on your power and your clothing relative to the opponent. The legal ramifications are always theoretical unless the case goes to the court and even then you are allowed a defense. People may serve very short sentences for genuine manslaughter and every time you have to defend yourself and injure the other person there is a chance that you will be slapped with a charge and sentence just the same. It's not necessarily a question of what martial art you practice because allegedly it's easier for the legal system to just slap both the offender and defender with a charge as long as both are hurt to some extent or if only the attacker is hurt. But you still have the moral high ground and if you are an intelligent person you can explain your case to potential employers and the like if you ever need to. If you don't have those verbal skills, there are people who are great with arguing a case.
    2. You can defend yourself with only one intact arm as a boxer. Even if your left arm is broken, you can still knock someone out with your right arm and vice versa.
    3. You can throw a knock-out punch sitting down in a wheelchair or in a car.
    4. Regarding fights going to the ground; some fights certainly go to the ground but there is a two-pronged problem with this argument:
-self-defense and fights are closely related but not the same
-most fights happen between people who are not trained in anything
Fights happen out of a mutual symbolic unwritten contract where two men engage in body language which lets both parties know that violence is about to happen and neither one backs down. Similar to a UFC fight both people already more or less know what to expect and gentlemanly rules may be in place which give the grappler a sense of safety about groin grabs, bites etc. not being employed. There is no element of surprise in a ego fight but there is often a big element of surprise in a self-defense situation.
This may mean that you are punched out of the blue in which case you don't see it coming at all or if you have a chance of seeing it coming pretty much only boxing experience gives you a decent chance of evading that punch. If you take a punch and end up semi-conscious or have your orbital bone or jaw broken and end up on the ground with the guy, you are in a bad position even if you have a black belt in BJJ because, in video game terms, your health meter is greatly reduced. So basically there are circumstances where you end up on the ground and it no longer matters if you know how to fight on the ground because you are already too badly hurt to do much. In that case BJJ is like being in the operating room over lung cancer while boxing is the friend that prevents you from smoking in the first place. Some surgeries end up saving you but it's better to take preventive action when you're still healthy.
The second possibility is that the offender gestures offensively, consistently invades your space or perhaps lets you know verbally that they are about to hurt you, in which case the element of surprise is on your side and you can light him up with punches before he has a chance to react. If you offensively grapple him, you kind of waste the element of surprise and expose your vital spots to him as the author of this video has pointed out.
Never in my life have I seen footage of a boxer or kickboxer being dragged to the ground at will by someone untrained so the danger of being dragged to the ground by an offender seems more theoretical than anything else. It's kind of hard to trace the history of this argument because the advent of the internet coincides with the popularity of BJJ and UFC and by the time internet was mainstream BJJ and the "fights go to the ground" thing was already a popular idiom but my suspicion is that in the 80's most people were not scared of being taken to the ground. They were afraid of being knocked out, receiving a crippling kick to the baby maker and the like. I suspect that nothing has changed in 'real world' violence since the 80's but the face of combat sports has changed with the UFC. Breakdancing will be in the olympics some years from now but that does not mean that most dance events go to the ground...most people still dance on their feet even though breakdancing will be the only olympic dance sport. And just like breakdancing becoming an olympic sport does not mean that most people on the street can take a dance to the ground and spin on their head neither does the UFC's popularity mean that a mentally ill man can dive for your legs like Khabib. It's a laughable idea but the extreme popularity of BJJ has warped our reality a bit.

You will definitely need to spar if you want to be a competitive boxer, but you DO NOT need to spar at 100% in order to learn basic self-defense. You just need to do some good reactive drills, and then you can spar at 50% for self-defense purposes.

Honestly (just my opinion), a person really needs to be experienced in both. Street fights are spontaneous, and you need to know what to do if the fight stays on the feet or ends up on the ground. I spent over 20 years in judo, and have now (since I’m older, lol) fallen in love with boxing. Kudos to both which are excellent ways to defend yourself. 🥋😎🤙🏾

There are variables to consider. What are your natural strengths? What do you enjoy more? If you naturally enjoy grappling more than study it. If you enjoy boxing do that. As for a smaller fighter being picked up and slammed while fighting from guard in BJJ just open your guard. If you remain in closed guard a larger opponent will pick you up and try to powerbomb you. Just open your guard and you should be all right. My recommendation especially if you have to deal with a larger or stronger opponent which will most likely be the case is to learn both boxing and BJJ so that you are well-rounded and able to control the fight no matter where it takes place.

One thing people ignore a lot about the whole “you should never go to the ground” argument is that it’s not always your choice. You can trip, you can get taken down, you can get punched and lose your balance. If you end up in this position, it’s a lot better to do so with grappling skills. It will help you survive a ground fight as well as teach you how to stand up as fast as possible

  • @crapdevil1772

As a boxer i should say boxe is better. But BJJ is very effective in short distance. In a real street fight nobody that know a martial art is probably involved because we know what we use and we know where to use. A boxers or judokas or BJJ guys are for the 99.9% good person, so they never partecipate to a street fight

  • @ivans3483
    @ivans3483 Рік тому +4

If you have to pick one thing then boxing is definitely the one. The video covered a lot of the main reasons. In a street fight boxing is almost always going to more useful and practical then Bjj or grappling in general. However I agree that some grappling skill should be learned for those few situations when it does get taken to the ground or someone gets past your guard to grab you. But as long as your boxing is good enough you can handle situations against stronger and bigger opponents assuming they don’t practice some fighting style with just boxing.

Martial art doesnt help you to win in street fight. But to avoid if you smart enough. Imagine attackers with weapon and it means no chance for you. Remember that guy can stub you as a last option if he loses fight (on a ground for example). And you might not even notice that he has knife before fight. What worse you might not even notice you got stabbed right after fight. This happens. Get pepper spray and try to avoid conflicts, dont fight for money or your phone. Fight only for you family or friends if there is a risk for their health.

But do you don't need advanced BJJ techniques to be good at self defense. 70% you can throw out the window. Same for boxing. In a self defense situation things are lightning quick and you will only end up using the basics. 1-2 punch maybe an elbow or a knee and if it hits the floor you will only use the most effective and simple stuff.

Bjj has a ton of wrestling in it and most school sprinkle wrestlinginto there trainingor that have one or 2 dedicated days for it. Pure wrestling suffers from all the same cons as bjj but it has another huge flaw and that's the fact that you don't know how to finish the fight when it goes to the ground. Without submission its gonna be way harder to subdue your attacker. For something more similar to what you were saying about the slams and throws would be Judo. Judo is more heavily focused on throws but they do incorporate ground grappling too. In Judo at brown or black belt level your more then capable of defending yourself on a one on one fight.

21 ft rule. Gun always wins when deployed, but that can be hard when someone's tackling you. The other problem is that guns aren't legally usable unless there is a legitimate threat to your life. Now if someone's being an aggressive drunk outside of a club you can't shoot them, but you can sure as hell restrain them. Grapple with a trainer gun and learn to grapple, strike, and run.

Okay there's going to be all kinds of responses to this pluses and minuses pros and cons I'm sure but here's the story..... A friend of mine told me about a fight that he got into this was before covet. He showed up to my place one day with Staples in his head his eyes were puffy and cut open and his mouth looked as if he had plastic surgery. No I'm sure alcohol was a big factor for both him and his opponents. But what a friend told me name was held. Was that he was at a nightclub of some sort bar I guess. And then he and some bikers so right off the bat this was bad news from the get-go. Started mounting off to each other. and I guess One of them in particular was the main aggressor and they started to fight the biker and my friend both My friend I guess also told me a couple of the bikers friends started jumping in so it was something like a three on one situation. My friend said when it was on the feet he was actually doing pretty good he ended up causing the other two guys bikers to back off because my friend was doing pretty good striking with them. He said it wasn't until and of course he had some MMA training I guess... That he decided to suddenly try to take advantage of using a takedown which I don't know cuz I wasn't there how good the takedown was but I guess they kind of tussled around or ended up on the ground a little bit. And once that happened my friend said that's where it got real bad if it didn't get bad all ready. Somebody came up one of the bikers I suppose friends and hit my friend with a bottle. And this is what perplexed me someone in the audience who was watching cuz I guess there was still a bunch of people there came up to my friend out of nowhere and hit him with a bottle also . Which kind of makes me wonder about human or animal nature by the way with when someone is winning against someone else everyone else instead of trying to save that victim instead turns and takes oftentimes the winners side even if that person is bad I wonder what the commenters have to say about that. But my friend said he was still had fight left in him. He was a guy who also did a lot of powerlifting at the gym and looked like a powerlifter. I guess somebody decided to break up the fight most likely employees decided to jump in I guess which made me wonder why they took so long. But my friend told me the number one thing he realized is this idea of doing good on your feet and then suddenly try to shoot in for a takedown like in MMA out of nowhere seemed kind of stupid. He felt like he would have just been better off using his hands maybe even a few kicks nullifying the situation to his best and getting out of there. He also said there was a momentary feeling where before he made the takedown attempt he saw the exit right after landing a really good punch. It made my friend feel like he could just run away and probably get out of there with fewer scars than what he ended up receiving. But who knows I guess if they would have chased him how long it would have taken for him maybe to get his keys and get into his car all kinds of variables I'm assuming. But he felt as if maybe for the streets he would like to fight on his feet more often. The idea of going on the ground with glass, chairs,. Nail s,. Gravel, you name it. And of course the idea of having a weapon pulled on him made him feel as if being on your feet more often in a street altercation might be a better way to go. With of course the right amount of grappling to stay on your feet. Now of course this is a story being told to me I wasn't there I've heard the people at the bar/night club give me similar yet quick renditions of the same story but I remember taking judo thinking I'd probably rather learn something like this then something where The main premise would be that you for sure whether you're on your back or you're on top is solely based on being on a hard surface without knowing exactly what's going to happen from your environment. I'd like to know what everyone else has to say because I'm sure there was quite a few things my friend did wrong. The one thing I know is I would hate to be in any kind of vulnerable position on the street. And if I have the opportunity to get away from the situation I'm thinking and this is of course just thinking that having somebody in my guard and yes I know that's not all Brazilian jiu jitsu is but still it doesn't put me in the position to escape from a dangerous situation as well as being on my feet and landing a good punch or kick but hey that's just me. please I'm just looking for someone's thoughts on this I'm not trying to get anybody heated here I'm sure there's all kinds of mistakes being made. Even my own perception of how to deal with a street situation could definitely be flawed

I would say that if you're FAIRLY CERTAIN that no one else will jump into the fight, then going to the ground one-on-one against someone can offer advantages, particularly if 1) you're comfortable on the ground, 2) he's a better boxer than you are, or 3) you just want to control or subdue him without beating the crap out of him. BUT... you take on enormous risks when you leave your feet, and VERY OFTEN other people join in to help your opponent once you're on the ground, so I would be very careful in general about going to the ground. Do it if you need to. Otherwise, you're safer remaining on your feet.

I say jiu jitsu because it gives you more options. You can not hurt someone on the ground. You can choke them out. You can break limbs. Boxing is great for that quick KO which is an advantage over BJJ but you can still RNC someone standing real fast.
In the case of multiple attackers, you shouldn't even try using boxing to do that. The best option is to run and just carry a weapon in case you can't retreat.
BJJ dominates the ground but also part on the feet since you can do standing submissions and take downs.
A pro for boxing is that it takes like 10 lessons to learn it haha but obviously a long time to master it. BJJ is so technical that you are still brand new at 10 lessons.
It is of course better to know all but unless you live near an MMA gym with a good schedule you'll have to pay 2 memberships which is a lot of money.

If you're worried about being attacked, carrying the weapon and pulling it out is best regardless of your background. Our hands evolved for the use of tools and a weapon is the best equalizer. But saying that you should just run from multiple opponents is a cop-out; if you can run from multiple people, you can certainly run from just one so saying that you should run from multiple people implies that your ego does not allow you to run from just one but to take your chances with your life and health. Not saying this as a personal jab against you but deconstructing an argument I hear every now and then.

    • @bane3991
      @bane3991 2 роки тому

@@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 It's not about ego. It's about the fact that you're standing up for yourself. You shouldn't just walk away when someone is being an asshole. Let's say you're at a bar and someone gets in your face talking shit. You can run away or you can humble him. You have a right to be at that bar, you shouldn't just leave a spot you're in because someone is bullying you. You need to stand up to bullies.
In the case of multiple attackers, if you stand up to them they could badly injure you as oppose to 1 guy. So it might not be smart to start attacking them head on because the bullies will likely win and you'll get hurt in the process unless you had a weapon to help you out.
So it's definitely not an ego thing. I train MMA. I think everyone should respect everyone. If you go into an MMA academy acting like a dick, you'll be humbled REAL quick. It's a horrible atmosphere to train in when people are talking like that. It makes the newer guys want to leave and even the more experienced guys won't want to train in an environment like that. It hurts the gym too because memberships will decline.
It's a really hard argument to make when you talk about a guy bullying another guy, the guy being bullied beating up the bully, and than accusing the guy who was being bullied of having an ego because he fought back is really warped logic which I can't get behind but you're entitled to your opinion I just think it's a bit silly man.

All I'm going to say is that if you're literally in a bar like you just said they always have staff there and usually security as well. If someone left the toilet looking nasty, a janitor or staff member will look into that and the bouncer will escort away people who disrupt other paying visitors; it is not your job to enforce the rules of that venue. You can simply go to the member of security and sincerely tell them that someone is behaving inappropriately and they will ask that person to leave or will watch them.

@@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 I am almost 30. So I might be young to an 80yr old but in general I'm not. We can see multiple MMA fighters around my age and older getting into fights.
I'm not saying play security, I'm saying when someone is getting into your face you fight. If you want to run away that's fine. But I know how to fight and compared to the average person, I am very skilled. I have nothing to worry about.
Of course you're not going to change my mind. You say you shouldn't stand up to your bullies and you should let them back you out of the spot that you have a right to be in. I think this is ridiculous.
What if it isn't at the bar? What if it is on the streets? I could easily escape because I'm in much better shape than the average guy. But I won't do that because I have to put him in his place. By doing this I can save others because he'll likely never approach someone like that again. Your method only encourages the person to do it because they think everyone will just back down to them. You have to humble them out.
But you're not a fighter so you won't understand. Most people off the streets think they're better fighters than they really are. They step to trained individuals and get a beat down. It humbles them out. Not EVERY single one, but most. Some people need a beating to wake up.
Based off your response I see society has gotten soft which has been the talk for years now. But beatings aren't killings. If a guy keeps poking a dog with a stick and he gets bitten, he'll be way less likely to poke the dog with a stick. Yeah, he'll get hurt. He might even end up in the hospital but he learns a lesson.
I'm not saying you should pummel everyone because there's a time and a place. But for the most part if someone is being an ass, and you can legally get away with it, it's good to do it. I know society isn't what it used to be and you can't even spank your children anymore but nothing wrong with a little bit of justified beatings.
Go into an MMA academy and talk shit. Tell me you don't walk out of there with a beating. In the MMA community this is given the thumbs up.

@@bane3991 Comments like that are why some people often choose to go into dancing societies instead of martial arts. Martial arts have more burly types with anger problems and dancing societies have more upper middle class people. I went into both for a while and saw it with my own eyes. Your comments help reinforce those stereotypes but I can appreciate that that's the cultural mindset you live in in your group of peers and it makes sense to you and people that are made of the same social ingredients as you. I can say with some sincerity that I respect your point of view and I can see how it would be maintained in your life; you know the life you live, the values you have been raised to have and the kind of people you mingle with on a weekly basis. To upset that familiar balance of life by introducing foreign beliefs could upset your self-image and the harmony of your life in those circumstances so as long as that's the only life you know it makes perfect sense for you to think the way you do right now. Only a few short years ago I was still somewhat embroiled in the club and bar scene knowing that I'd be surrounded by alcohol, crowds, noise, burly people etc. who don't have quality hobbies or social circles and some of whom build their identity on physically standing out in a venue like that. It was rubbing off on me and I felt like I was being pulled into internalizing behaviors that are adaptive in that scene but I always knew that life had other plans for me in the long run. If that's the only life you can imagine for yourself, and there are millions of people like that, maintaining face in that environment is just as important to you as it is for a devout muslim to pray a certain way and I would never insult the people who are locked into that way of life (being the tough guy or whatever) because some of them are already in hell and even if they are not, I have no need to browbeat them with my values; we can be respectful of each other and still choose different life paths.
In so far as a person happens to be born into certain circumstances they do what they can to make sense of the world around them and the world around them is also actively constructed by that person; the things you see are not necessarily the same things I see even if we are both in the same physical place at the same time.
There are moments in my life when I can mentally walk in your shoes for a moment and then discard them to go back to my core self and probably vice versa especially as you get older and inevitably learn more about people and the world.
