The question of whether or not boxing works in a streetfight is about the dumbest one ever. In fact, of all the martial arts it probably has the most evidence of its efficacy in the form of youtube videos, and it's even prevailed against multiple attackers on several documented occasions.

@@hard2hurt jajaja damn that s a very short and very funny thread!
Lol thats awesome! I think most people that say this mean that there are rules in the ring, and street fights don't have rules. Everything we think we know about fighting is gone the second we get surrounded by 3 dudes that want to fuck us up outside a bar at 2am. What's that jab going to do for me now? Have we ever trained against multiple opponents? Do we have a fight IQ high enough to even deal with that? Are we fast enough, and have the stamina to run away safely? If so, could we time it enough to actually get space to escape? One thing that really affects our fighting game is stress(or fear, whatever you call it) we're going to need to a strong will in order to overcome situations where we are outnumbered or outmatched, and if you always keep your wits, you will make the right decisions and rarely be outgunned, even against high odds. @hard2hurt Man I really dig your content, and look forward to future videos

Its funny because people who "train for the streets" most of the time havent even been in a street fight before, they just makin excuses why they suck in the ring, lol
Yeah. It _usually_ means they cant fight
I'm not really familiar with people who say they train for the streets, but it makes sense to train how to get a fight over quickly and not to do 12 rounds in a ring if that's not what you want to do.

I've been outclassed (in the gym) by people who knew how to put the jab (and later the cross) where it needed to go and when. It made me feel pretty useless. The jab is an incredible punch. Punches don't have to be power shots to hurt. After I've taken a slight beating, I am regularly confronted with why this is just a hobby for me.
Was light sparring my friend who i teach some bang muay thai and bjj like didnt even close my fists and we were boxing and he tried to swing a sloppy right hand left hook and left his chin open and i hit him step back right straight and saw him wobble
Timing beats power
"Consult your attorney before you go jabbing people in the face in the street."
This is the kind of solid advice that I subscribe for.
I worked as a bouncer for a few years and got to see a lot of twenty to thirty something males assault each other. Saw the jab drop guys on at least three occasions. Crumbled up holding their nose a couple of times, or clipped on the chin and out cold once. Saw it as a set up for a cross or flailing hook a few times as well. But, remember alcohol or a stimulant was usually in the mix for most of these alterations.
Yeah idk why but your chin weakens when your drunk
@@TheTokoUate It weakens because blood flow to the brain is reduced when alcohol is consumed so the force required to knock somebody down or out becomes less
And let me guess those guys came forward when then jab was popped out hence the KO also street fighters throw wide hooks a lot and straight punches beat wild winging punches so the jab or cross is killer.
I use the jab a lot in a street fight...it always lands, plus its a perfect set up for the right cross...the "tough guys" cant move their head

That's a bad joke, but a pretty good bad joke.
Last time I "defended" myself in the street I was locked up for assault. The guy was in a coma for 3 days. Not that I hit him hard but the fact that I hit him a few times hard, his drunk ass did the stanky leg, fell, and hit his head on the concrete. I stood at the scene because one, I felt bad, and two, I figured since it was "self defense" I wouldn't get in trouble. But I was wrong... I whooped him so bad that I was considered a weapon because I've had the "proper training". So my advice to anyone watching and reading my comment, if you know how to fight because of proper training don't even bother with an average street dude unless your life is really really at risk. Not worth it at all. You will be looked at as the bad one to the cops and judge. So in my opinion don't use any skill in the street unless your life is in danger. I think it's better to jab and stiff arm rather than retract in a street scenario, it's the fastest way to establish a line of defense and gain control.
I like the stiff arm or post a lot. It's a big part of our kickboxing and boxing curriculum
@@hard2hurt I think stiff arms and collar ties are foundational for "self defense" as well, realistically speaking grappling to strike comes more naturally to most people than anything else.

I trained boxing casually for years. I've been in a street (bar) fight twice in my life. Both are quick encounter which I threw 1-2 while retreating to a lunging aggresive guy. I been training mma and working with violence for many years. My firm opinion when it comes to fighting on the street against an anarmed opponent is that boxing is the best. A good boxer with a terrible good jab has every chance of winning the fight pretty quickly and with the least effort. Of course, with a little dexterity about the street rules. It's much harder to become a good boxer than to learn how to act in a street environment.
However this guy, Mike is verry complete as a intructor and teacher.
Great video, as a boxer myself I couldn't have put it any better. I'd love to see a video of the explanation behind adjusting your wrist before throwing a punch. A lot of people tend to throw and connect with the flat part between the knuckle and finger joint and it's so crucial for them to learn otherwise. Keep up the good work, love the channel!
That's funny you say that, because I have at times hit with that part. I notice it and will adjust my wrist to hit directly with my first two knuckles.
First two knuckles bends my wrists so i land with th middle and ring fingers meaning square and flat this way my knuckles buckle fuckol which is weird also havent hurt my ring finger or knuckle cause of it either and before anyone asks i have ten years of mma and one year currently in boxing under my belt and im undefeated in mma and boxing.

I've gone through many injuries and they become more prone when you don't strike with your first 2 knuckles.

I read that back in day the jab was referred to as the "jolt" it was meant to be a fast surprising attack. Later on it started to be used more as a way to gauge distance and generally became weaker. Now i try to think "jolt" rather than jab, it reminds me what it's really for
2yrs later and all, but it all depends on how you use the jab. How you turn your hips, shoulders, foot position, etc can turn that weak jab into a power shot. Look at Sony Liston, or Julian Jackson. But, Liston especially his jab was fucking scary. Man was throwing bombs at people

That's not a bad video idea...
good vid! I would just add a scenario in which after throwing quick jab your opponent would try to land loaded up & huge hook (probably right one) so it'd be great to have prepared good ole one & two - after quick jab, solid right cross to open target/face or whatever would bring an end to disagreement.
10 out of 10, would go to the body again :D
In the words of AJ of what they taught him .. " a good right hand can take you around the block, a good jab can take you around the world" 👍🔥
As a kid my uncle used to make me throw the jab over and over again. He would say you lifted your shoulder or you dropped the shoulder or you pulled back. His whole goal was to create a punch that had no cues whatsoever and as I got older I could always land the jab. As I progressed I started to throw what some people call an upper jab from the below the waist or from waist level. I liked this better because it both gave my opponent the illusion of an opening and because it really opened up my line of sight. I liked to counter punch so that the left hand carried low encouraged attacks but with good foot and weight positioning coupled with being able to keep the chin tight to the left shoulder and being able to roll the shoulder allows you enough defense. The jab also is thrown from out of the line of sight of your opponent so with no cues the punch will land easily. Lastly I think that it is often better for a boxer to lead with the hook or check hook in a street fight. Most people who have never boxed can identify a well thrown short left hook. The punch thrown correctly defies the laws of physics LOL or at least it appears to. The weight transfer is backwards and the weight starts on the lead foot and ends on the back foot so that the punch is being pulled somewhat towards the person throwing the punch. It's trajectory is thrown from a weird angle and is usually thrown in such a way when thrown right that the recipient does not see the punch and if he does it is literally a fraction of a millisecond before it lands. Positioning is extremely important but if you know what your doing it is easier to get good position to throw the shot in a streetfight then it is in the ring, because the opponent in the ring has an idea of what sort of danger he is in.
Such practical ,good ,advice . Love his form .
In the gym I train with 16oz gloves and have gotten used to the defensive coverage & hand protection gloves provide... so for people like me a steetfight is different.
For small gloves or no gloves you have to think more in the MMA striking realm. You have to rely more on head movement, parries, and footwork. I spent alot of time training in the kickboxing realm and the MMA areas and not all the defensive techniques from kickboxing transfer well to small gloves. You can't shell up or hand block the head well outside of big glvoes so you have to block with your whole arm and elbow. The upside to small or no gloves is you don't have to move your head as much to get out of the way, they can't hit as hard as in big gloves, but the impact is more dense and painful.
This is one of the issues that does crop up... I should do a video directly contradicts what I said in the last one that's always fun.
I had to give someone a quick jab once and I followed up saying "I dont want to fight" and he backed off and I backed off. It was pretty nice.

I’d love to see a video purely dedicated to wrestling. Such as do’s and dont’s for self defense, what works, what you recommend, overall just your opinion on wrestling for self defense.
Best channel for wrestling tutorials is teach me grappling. He not only breaks down important details of each move, but also how to practice it in a productive way.
Wrestling takedowns and ground work for self defense are a "grey area," even most of the techniques in MMA would be awful in a street altercation - shooting a double on concrete is suicicidal. Realistically, you'd pretty much have to rely on a high crotch or suplex with a slam (lethal on concrete) or knee picks into ground and pound.
I'm glad you covered the danger of the jab on the leading foot. It's unbalanced and looses all the speed and snap. It's known in some boxing circles as the "Lazy Jab". Even if you are jabbing to set up combo or gauge distance you should never leave your arm out there and, as you said, NEVER lunge into it. (if you are a right handed fencer and tend to box southpaw you may need extra training to overcome this tendency) + A lazy jab requires more effort in recovery (it's slow, hence "lazy") and will get you knocked out against a quick opponent. Thanks again for the great work you do in the videos.
Cowboy Cerrone is a perfect example of this. Dude strikes no telegraph and keeps his torso over his legs. Doesn't reach or put himself off balance. Great video. Very informative.

"I train for the streets" Sounds like someone mimicking stuff they watched in a Kung Fu movie.
I use a really nice drill to train the telegraphing out of my jabs (also helps with speed). Have someone hold a pad for you, you throw a jab and they try to move it out of the way. For beginners id suggest moving it out of the way sideways, later just have them drop it so the gravity helps. Also have the pad holder tell you how he saw the strike coming and eliminate that from your movement. Just two things to keep in mind, make sure you have good enough control over your strikes so you don't injure your elbow when you miss and do not cheat by aiming below the pad, aim for the pad, if you're good enough you'll hit it. It also works for crosses, but it is a bit more difficult (obviously).
In the boxing ring it's a chess game mixed with emotion in a street fight it's usually just emotion. So depending on whether you know who your going to fight will determine on whether you want utilize the jab. He said it in the video if he starts coming at you tryna strangle or grab you, you probably gonna want to use some other techniques. Love this vid thanks for the upload

I view the jab as a set-up/distraction for what comes behind it. A nice pop will shock the guy and leave him open for a 2,3 or 4 combo. what if he nails u with his left knee since your short?
If you're fighting someone throwing knee counters to jabs, you have much bigger problems do deal with than punch selection man 😭
In a “street” situation I agree not telegraphing is ideal if they’re aggressive, pushing forward and you need to get something in to try to follow up with something else, but a good power jab with the same untelegraphed shoulder movement and forward movement can knock a guy down if you catch him square or allow you to get into grappling or follow up striking range if you don’t have any options to use defensive foot work to improve your situation.
But in a more ring/duel situation the pump jab can become several things other than a predictable movement-a faint to setup untelegraphed jabs, a pump jab you follow through with instead of faint to catch over reactions, or force a retreat or movement to “cut off the ring”.
But yeah, hit with shots that the other guy can’t see, but will feel. Whether it’s letting a guy run into your fist or whether it’s giving the other guy a punch he thought he could see coming.
The Dempsey drop step adds power as you’re basically putting most of your body weight behind it into the jab ,but, yeah, it’s easier to block, and if the opponent knows what he’s doing , can counter it easier. I’m with CN on this. The few times I used a jab in an altercation was to bring the opponent’s hands up to open him up to a single or double leg, as my background is wrestling. Once on the ground it’s usually pretty much over either by cooler heads prevailing at that point or a more convincing technique is used.
Depends on the aggression and fighting style of the opponent.

Dude you are a very talented and athletic guy who clearly knows what he's doing but I don't know where you got the idea that being stupid somehow makes someone a better fighter, or even that you're stupid yourself. One of the most talented guys in BJJ I've trained with was a PhD. John Danaher, arguably the greatest BJJ coach of our generation had a Bachlor's, Master's and was working toward PhD before he dropped out. Shane Carwin was an engineer. Terry Martin a master's in clinical psychology. Carlos Newton a medical degree. Wladimir Klitschko has a PhD and speaks four languages.
Knowing how to fight and intelligence aren't like some oppositional variables that somehow cancel each other out. Plus there are a lot of different types of intelligence. Spacial for one, which you clearly have. Spacial intelligence is something that can exist and be developed in any sort of person, it's not some sort of special ability that only stupid people have.
Yo chill, I think what Mike means is that guys who get “sciency” WHEN they talk about fighting usually don’t really know how to fight. A guy can be a scientist or super intelligent and at the same time not be sciency when he is explaining martial art techniques.
What Wing said, also getting "too sciency" to me means going in depth and using big words which has a tendency to lose some people's attention. In this case that's unneccessary because people don't need the in depth discussion of how our brains process and react to movements to understand why the winding up motion can be bad.

That's the only sparring footage of Lee. There are some still photos of him sparring in the back yard. But, if you ever read his book a big part of his system was a "lead hand punch" thrown with his strong side forward. Modelled off Jack Dempseys "lead left jolt." I've only seen one guy really be able to use it in sparring. It takes a lot of athletic attributes to be able to control the range with it in the compressed time/distance and closing speed of a street assault.
the best method of self defense is still the half-mile sprint. if you can put maximum distance between you and a person as quickly as possible, not only does it make you harder to hurt, but that person has to seriously consider if it's worth the effort.
Awesome video. Thanks
Free of speak from Sweden. I Love your content but. Why do you think every thing is rong? What i seen and heard every thing is rong. And jabbing is not to nock sameone.
“Getting punched in the face feels about the same”
So gloves feel the same as bare hands??
Tbh the glove will buzz you more, the bare hand cuts more tho... gloves are to protect your hands not ur opponents face.
Anyname willdo gloves don’t hurt as bad as bare hands. There’s more padding which is why professional has less padding and amateur has more
@@lobsterairsoft499 They did tests on it i believe the glove allows you to punch harder, ive experienced both, imo bare knuckle didnt hurt has bad as glove as in getting buzzed
Anyname willdo guy google it takes 2 seconds. A bare fist will do more damage than a padded glove. There’s tons of videos and tests proving this and it makes perfect sense. Same amount of force over a smaller area with less padding equals more damage
@@MegaSlayerr ovo a glove dosent hurt that much, a bare fist tho hurts.
I played Cosmic Ark like crazy as a kid and the space travel round of this Atari game really brings this point home. Just look straight at the ark and let your peripheral vision pick up the meteors coming at the ark and react to them. Same thing with that jab telegraph. It pops right into the peripheral vision center, very easy to react. By the way, you can find a Kimbo Slice boxing video showing the same principle as this video's trying to make.
Hey Mike love the channel, just wondering whats your opinion on GI and no-GI training for self defense is either better or can they both work? sorry if you have answer this question already.
New guy - “ yeah I used to be a street fighter”
Me - *Opens door to cage*
“step into my office 😈”
Daniel Whiting heard that all before 😴😂. I have no doubt there are people who could hold their own, but against a legit aspiring prospect? Who does nothing but train his craft? Cmon man let’s not fool ourselves.
Daniel Whiting Well me personally MMA. But it’s silly to think you can not train everyday, and dominate someone who does, just because of past experience. He’ll there’s been times I’ve had an injury and been out of sparring for a month, and the guy I was cracking starts cracking me.
Icy Mike, what's your take on the "vibrating palm" or windshield washer technique, in some styles like Kempo (Jim Brassard is one proponent of this)? Will it just tick off a determined individual etc.? Luv your vids, thanks! Also, do you ever offset your feet 35 degrees or so at the end of the jab for an extra reach and oomf?
I always love your videos.
I am one of those "karate nerds" with multiple black belts (Real and earned in the dungeon days.) I love the snap and no BS way you show the jab. In my opinion, a "grown ass man" should never expect to knock out another "grown ass man" with a jab. Hollywood has conditioned people wrongly. Apparently, feeling the distance and messing up someone's timing doesn't make for good cinema.
Jab is a perfect range finder followed by straight right and left hook,Usually at that point people who start a fight in the street are looking at pavement or a way to get out of the situation. Most trained fighters don’t Street fight and will de escalate a confrontation which works well unless your adversary is drunk or drug fueled.
Killer videos bro
that has to be the best quick explanation of street vs ring ever. The street is just everything in the ring done on a time crunch with urgency.
Good video. Can recommend the video with Michael Jai White and Kimbo Slice, where MJW gets more into how to not telegraph your punches and just go straight forward.
Love the video guys. I love the jab, especially the post jab which can set up a hook unless they know wristlocks. Also use it to set up roundhouse into a dbl leg takedown. My opinion on street vs MMA is that MMA strikes/takedowns still work, there's just more of a focus on dealing with uour opponent quicker because he probably has friends. In streetfighting simpler is better and efficiency is king. A single leg takedown can knock a guy out on grass or kill him on concrete so why wouldn't you use it?
I would say yes. As a range finder. Or a quick daze inducer for a flurry of power punches to follow to end a confrontation quickly.
The only street fight I was ever in I kept my distance with the jab, it was a very quick way of figuring out where I couldnt get hit by the other dude and I knocked him out cold with a right cross. Definitely worked for me
Saw a streetfight compellation of guys successfully taking on multiple attackers...Each time was about the same...They'd throw jabs almost entirely, and use stutterstep footwork to slowly back up, while constantly changing angles and checking behind or at least to the side. A few of them dropped 2-4 guys without getting hit at all
around 6 years ago, the first fist fight I ever witnessed went like this:
Guy A was the school boxer, and Guy B was a thug. The thug even had brass knuckles on. I don't know what happened because it all happened to o fast, but basically, the thug recoiled back for a huge right punch while the boxer just punched twice really fast and the thug went down.
I think it was a jab and a straight, but damn that was memorable lol
You have many types of jabs and i will say all jabs are usefull in a fight meaning competition street bar ocean or in the toilet ;-) the jabs i use r the basic jab. The tapper. This jab, a light tap, can be thrown in quick succession. The backstep jab. The power jab ( straight lead in jkd ) the double jab and the counter jab. and no im not hating so keep up the good work i like your videos
I think I think........... I know from now on this is my favorite martial arts channel from now on...... So just to be sure I had to put from now on twice...... Actually three times now
You made a great point, good video.
My Dad isn’t a wordy man, but one gem he gave me - that you just repeated, and which therefore gives you credibility in my eyes - is to always hit first. I was a kid when told him I always got butterflies in my stomach every time I was about to get into it with some bullies I grew up with. I wanted advice on how to not feel the fear. He didn’t give me that. Instead he told me that’s my body telling me it’s time to hit, and to make sure I hit first. It was, and is still, good advice.
Great channel, I've not tried to look for your location but how close are you guys to Jacksonville Florida, would love a future collaboration with you
I never realized they were in or near the 904. That explains a lot, if he is in his 40s fighting was a way of life when he was a teen. I know it w as s for me (45) . Between the ethnic gangs and skinhead groups during that period if you couldn't handle your shit downtown or at the beaches after 10 PM you were meat.
Mike, can you recommend a good channel for more basic technique info, e.g. boxing basics?
Oh hey, great video! I had a quick question: In a self-defense context, with a jab or any punch to the head, are you concerned about damage to your own fingers? How would you minimize that?
Jacob Xavier try to condition your knuckles I did karate when I was a kid and the used to make us punch some wood wrapped in rope our do push-ups on or knuckles it helps your hands get stronger but it’s still always gonna hurt like a bitch you just gotta learn how to deal with it in the moment and take some Advil the next day
I love your channel greetings from argentina
At a pub one night, I saw a guy walking up to another in the same fashion seen in this video, he walked straight into a stiff jab that put him on his ass. Didn't end the fight as expected but certainly put the other guy in a favourable position. All tools have their applications.
A good jab mixed with defensive footwork has saved my arse on the street. When they cant hit you they get frustrated. Footwork and reflexes. Dont over commit in a street fight or you will end up on the ground with ribs and head kicked in. Thanks for the vid.
Hey Mike, I liked your look better without the beard. But, as far as a street fight goes shouldn't you just completely either knock them out or down witch would end the fight with no drawbacks like the other guy going and getting his friends or similar things like that?
You're an ace...strong fundamentals, man👊
