  • Go Here to Download Your Book - www.myboxingcoach.com - In this video I talk through one of the most frightening self-defense situations I've faced. This night involved a short car chase, two assailants and a late night dark road.
This was a full-on self-defense situation, one of those really intense and frightening experiences that lives with you from that day on.
The question is, did my history of boxing training help me? Was I able to leverage the skills that I'd learned during my years of boxing training to help me get through the situation?
Well, the answer of whether my boxing training assisted with self-defense is 'yes', but probably not in ways that you might think.
    Cheers
    Fran

The real killer feature for a boxer in a self defense situation, is the endurance and fight fitness, in my opinion. The average person simply cannot keep attacking for very long.

+Raymir totally agree with you. I've watched several videos where boxing coaches did analyzations of street fights involving a boxer and it was mind-blowing how one guy fights off 3-5 guys, which involved being aware of your surroundings, not allowing anyone to get behind you and proper foot work, so as to not trip and utilizing power blows. This impressed me greatly, because just think you may have defend yourself or your loved ones and it's great to have boxing in the arsenal!!

My biggest regret in a fight was peppering an attacker with a bunch of short straight punches rather than lining them up properly and rocking them with a left hook or cross, (which worked on other occasions). I then got stuck fighting two guys when my first shot/volley should have reduced it to one.

In all the self defense training I've seen running away is a perfectly acceptable solution if you can. Nothing to be ashamed of. When you can't, everything is "fair". Groin strikes, head butts, biting, whatever you have to do to end it and go. You just can't tell when somebody might pull out a gun or other weapon or when reinforcements might arrive.

I couldn't help but chuckle when you mentioned getting punched in the back of the head and thinking "oh okay, this is fine". Tuck your chin, head down and against untrained people with no gloves on you should be okay for the most part.

Never forget that some schmo might headbutt, eye gouge, groin shot, pull a knife, have friends around the corner and just ignore any and all perceived honor. ➡I think something you had not mentioned, is that boxing gets you acclimated to fists coming at you. You didn't freeze, you were able to formulate a quick plan, change the plan and tactics as things went down, come up with another loan, reengage execute it etc. Things you do over and over in the ring, right?

    • @tonypaella
      @tonypaella 2 роки тому

The first part of what your said resonates with me. There is a reason why eyes were off limits even in the early UFC. Also biting. People tend to say "only people who try to discredit grappling bring up eye gouging". That's nonsense. Also we're not talking little eye pokes, we're talking fingers or thumbs into the eyes as deeply as possible. If people think that's not a huge threat, they are delusional.

Hello Fran. I have trained bjj for 4 years now and consider myself to be a strong grappler. However unlike most other bjj guys i realise it's limitations especially when it comes to self defense. There are so many issues with going to the ground in real life. Even if you are lucky enough to only be attacked by one unarmed person, you could quite easily get a bystander come up and kick you in the head while you're applying some kind of choke, because they think you are the aggressor.
I consider boxing to be the single best unarmed chance you can give yourself when running is not an option and for that reason i am so drawn to it. However, I am petrified of the potential damage. I've been working hard the last few years to get myself a good job and I don't really want to throw that away.
Having said that, i've only ever done striking in a village hall where safety, proper defensive technique and correct matching were never given any consideration, so i feel my perception of it may be tainted. I think i'd feel more comfortable with a coach like you. You seem to have zero ill effects from your time fighting and that must reflect in the way you run the gym.
Any advice for someone in my shoes?

    • @jesselowe9374
      @jesselowe9374 Рік тому

Maybe start with learning how to shadow box. It incorporates everything from footwork, head movement and so on. Not to mention the conditioning aspect. Learn the punches, little by little. Although you're not sparring, you're learning proper technique. If you want to add power, move into the heavybag. I know they don't hit back, but the average person can't punch and don't have proper footing. You'd have both, just from shadowboxing or hitting the bag properly. There's plenty of channels with boxing info. I hope this helps.

Train to have one or 2 good powerful punches and cover, keep fit, don't get plastered, avoid dangerous places, understand basic awareness, stay reasonably alert without being paranoid, don't be a clown..
This will keep most people right..
oh and work on staying on your feet at all costs..

Hi Maxwell. Yes, they were high up on the back of my head. Getting hit in the back of the neck is a different conversation (known as rabbit punches). So, punches to the back of the head are banned in boxing because they are not far off rabbit punches. With the guy having no protective gloves on his hand would break before my head would. Don't get me wrong, wasn't pleasant and I had some terrible lumps and bumps afterwards.

I approach him, he is mumbling to himself, I tell him time to leave. "I have to get water" No you've had all night bar is closed. "I gotta go restroom." No I say "we are closed you have to leave now". I walk him to side door that leads to outdoor smoking lounge, it has gate that has been opened to parking area. We are heading down stairs about 6 steps down and we are outside, he is talking to himself under his breath but I definitely heard " Crystal meth Mother F $%^r!" he is getting very aggravated. He is more looking at me and not where was going and bumps into woman, this is what he wanted any excuses to escalate the situation he flys into a rage "you made hit a woman! you made me hit a woman I am going to kill you!" and lunges at me hands out like he was going to claw my eyes out. Now at the time I was 28 29 I had done Boxing and Muay Thai in early 20s and at this time of my life I was getting into power lifting, about 218 pounds squatting upper 400s and benching mid 300s. This is about a second or two in real time, he leaps at me his hands forward, me pivot right cross into his mouth "POP" spins him around lands on ground to my left side, my right knee drops into his stomach. As I am telling him to cool down as he spits out about half his teeth (not that they were in good shape to begin with). he is screaming and flailing, so I grab a handful of his greise blond shoulder length hair and drag him to parking lot, tossed him out like yesterdays garbage. I am at my post about 5 minutes later boss come to me and says cops are here and to hide in DJ booth. So I do about this time my hand is throbbing I notice pieces of teeth are sticking out of my knuckles. So I am on floor under turn tables for what feels like hours probably 45 minutes. Boss says its all good here is your pay. I had go hospital for blood test and stitches in hand, still have the scar. My one Bruce Lee moment was with some tweaker in a dumb alleyway.

As most of comments mention: an average street fighter can't keep throwing punches continuously for more than 2, let's say 3 minutes.... Probably he ll totally miss 80 %and land some 20%not real hard punches..... Most of the people will be totally exhausted after 2minutes of intensive physical effort....

Funny story, coach. Usually when an adult is telling me about a fight they got into, I'm thinking "you shouldn't have been there" or "you should know better at your age, dummy." In this case I don't know what you could have done to avoid that. Now post some of your Pink Floyd covers, please.

Skill and power who u think is gonna win
    Just choose one 😅
Does bivol russian stylr has any chance against the pund for pound?

I think Canelo on points. He can struggle against E Euro style (I thought GGG won the first fight clearly). GGG more experienced than Bivol. Besides, if it goes the distance no judge would go against Canelo :-)

@@myboxingcoach can I tell u somthing coach ? But don't get mad at me 😅
I think bivol style is the same way u teach a boxer
bivol is all time on toes like u teach don't get me wrong
      But his punches are weak
When I was watching his tapew of him punchung bag or shadowbox he look like robot and got no rythm
And I think this is why u couldn't ko that dude in street with the cross becz u was on toes maybe !!
Canelo is more flat footed and he can generate craazy power and break people faces too
And he got amazing headmovent too
So Iam going for canelo all day everyday babbby lessss goooo😆

@@Fightingat40 have you ever trained with a soldier? Or even shot? They are great with a rifle, but nearly every single one sucks with pistols. Their unarmed training has nothing to do with fighting, it's only about regulating emotions. Their form of combat has nothing to do with civilian combat.
Idk if you have ever trained with the police, but... Look at the cases that were in the media the last month and years about the killed blacks in USA. Especially the last one which were badly pulled to the ground and than shot in the back of the head after he snatched the taser. They are no fighters. If there is serious violence it's up to Swats. That assumptions are irrational and about assumptions out of emotions.

This is a silly take. I don't know where you are from but the US isn't the center of the World. In all of the club I've trained to(sambo, mma, grappling, etc), at least one of the coach was also in the police, the regular one and not some special force. And they also did pistol and selfdefense training. I'm not saying all of them are some kind of Punisher but they have armed/unarmed combat training. To disagree with the idea that state forces are generally more equipped than the public (other than combat experts) to face violent situation is really silly
