I recently purchased a new TRD Off Road and overall I'm pleased with it. The power I feel is adequate at best. The one problem I seem to have right now is a shimmy at around 65 mph. I've taken it back to the dealership but the shimmy is still there. I was lurking around some forums and this seems to be a known problem in the 5th generation 4runners. Overall though I don't regret purchasing it and think it will serve me well for years to come.
I own both Tacoma and 4Runner luv both…I tuned my Tacoma to OTT tune and no more gear hunting..it awakens the engine, immediate throttle response…then I tuned also my 4Runner

Great video! Nice to hear someone not parrot the negativity about these ancient vehicles. Currently own a 2003 4Runner with the 4.0 V6. First year for it. (Yes the 4.0 received an update in 2010) but still the 1GR-FE. Ours has the even more ancient 4 speed automatic and it feels quite peppy and sufficient even now at 21 years old and with 289k miles on it. My in laws have a 2011 4Runner and we've driven it several times. I will say, on take off, the fifth gen feels much quicker. But for general cruising and stuff, our 4th gen feels like it's geared better overall. Granted, I haven't driven the fifth gen on the interstate to compare, but our old 4th gen, never seems at a loss for power. It happily cruises at 70-80 mph without issue, even with minor hills. I really believe the 4th and fifth gen 4Runners are the best Toyotas in general. I will say the fifth gen is much more attractive looking. My wife and I are saving up to buy a fifth gen in the next few years. It will likely be a 2010-2014 SR5 4WD. Unless I can find a great deal on a Trail Edition or a TRD Off Road. 😂 Great vehicles, and if you're in the market, and find the prices out of reach, don't over look an older 4th gen, same reliability, minus one gear and not as pretty. 😂
Its a tank that you never need to worry about having auto issues. Some utubers said buy 5th gen before the 6th gen comes,to sell 2023s and 24s, then the same ones now say buy the new 4 cylinder ones to sell more cars. They get paid for their Toyota commercials. I love my 4Runner tank.

They say not to rev it under a 1,000 miles, and give it an oil change at 100 miles, in case there's metal bits in the engine. That goes for any vehicle. I've seen youtube videos where even the 4Runner had little bits of metal in the first oil change at 100 miles. I haven't bought mine yet, I'm waiting for the Dec-Jan deals. When I do get it, I'm doing the 100 miles, 1,000 miles, and every 5,000 miles oil change. This is coming from the mechanics that work on Toyota 4Runners and other Toyota's.
I also have the 5th gen 4Runner, the seating is definitely much more comfortable than the taco (which I also had before). One thing to watch out for - is the timing chain cover oil leak at the front of this engine. I don’t see much content about it so it’s probably not as widespread of an issue but it does exist and a proper repair requires pulling the engine out to redo the FIPG. I have this leak and not sure what to do about it yet despite the truck being under warrantee.

I put a deposit on a 2024 4Runner Off Road Premium in Underground, it's in transit, but if I go through with it, I'll be trading in my 2022 Tacoma Off Road. The gear hunting and seating position driving at minimum 1hour 5 days a week for 2 years now has ruined it for me, otherwise I love the Tacoma. There are not many 4R left and they are selling fast, production has ended.
@@ZetaDogProductions what seat cover are you going with? I have two car seats in my’23 Off Road premium. The seats looks bad for a few days after they are removed, but recovers well after about a week. Interested in what cover you go with. My wife says they aren’t safe.
@@jonmetropoulos5108 I haven't done a ton of research yet. Weather Tech makes a pretty decent looking cover, but it's a bit pricey. Might just get something off Amazon for now. I think they're only unsafe if they cover any airbags located in the seats.

I think of it like this. The current year 4runner has had 15 years of improvements. Its near perfect for what it was designed to do. Its not the fastest, it cant tow the most… but it’ll get you from point A to B for 200,000+ miles.
@@javieraguirre5777 I think it'll be like the new Tacoma. It looks like the rear will be a bit small, and from what I've seen, the rear seats, when folded, will not lay as flat as the 5th gen. I guess we'll find out when it's released, but if the new Tundra and Tacoma are any indication of the direction Toyota is going, I'd stay clear of the new 4Runner for a few years.
Don't feel you have to justify your 4runner, as I've said before, she's proven herself time and time again. I to get tired of people putting it down because of the age and lack of technology. These people really don't have a clue on what they're talking about, because if they did, then they would know exactly what the 4runner is all about. If you ever think she could do with a bit more get up and go as most of us did, try putting in the pedal commander as I did. It doesn't improve horsepower but it really wakes her up. I keep mine on the second city setting just enough to take up that lag. Good luck with her and enjoy a vehicle that is truly a dying breed.
I put a Banks Pedal Monster in my ‘24 TRD PRO. Only 3,500 miles on it it makes it drive perfectly now! My only complaint i had was the sponge pedal but that is gone and I LOVE driving it.
I'm really appreciative of your videos. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a Tundra right before the recall dropped, but I was already on the fence between risking the Tundra or downgrading (in amenities) to the "old trusty" 4Runner since I really only need the truck bed once or twice a year. I'm scared I'm really going to regret the loss of modern technology (currently in a MDX - long story...), but I love the sound of the drivetrain in your videos so I'm hoping that offsets it. I also had a 3rd gen Tacoma previously - do you notice the same slight lag those had when taking off sometimes? Looks like that is gone in your video but I can't tell for sure.
@@ZetaDogProductions Awesome. Any recommendations on dealers in SA? I'm in Houston and had to fight through some pretty slimey dealings when I bought the Tacoma.
Why not just test drive it? That's really the only way to know if you'll enjoy it. The MDX is super nice, so you might want to make sure you enjoy the 4Runner.
Got a 24 TRD off road premium recently specifically for the simplicity, reliability & quality of this generation of vehicle. To me, it has plenty of power for what I'm gonna use it for, I do wish it got better mileage, but it doesn't. I'm still ok with it, cause I know I will get my money's worth out of this vehicle, unlike most of the new way over technoligized garbage that's being made. I really can't imagine a 4-cylinder with an 8 speed transmission. To me, that will be about as worthless as our current government administration!!!!!
You have a great vehicle that will last you a long time. Don’t listen to the naysayers. They don’t know what they’re talking about. I also have a Trd off-road forerunner one of the best vehicles ever made.
I had a 2013 and 2016 Tacoma. And after about a couple of years of having the 2016 Tacoma, I sold it because the engine/transmission combo was a no no for me. I liked the 2013 much better.
Call me cavewoman! I love my dinosaur. I just got a 2024 4Runner Limited RWD (pavement prowler). The only thing I'm having trouble with after 2 weeks is finding the right seat position. My 2019 Jeep Cherokee had a more comfortable seat, but a comfortable seat in a car that doesn't run well is kind of useless.
I just looked at a brand new 4th gen tacoma (trd off road, non premium) today while I was getting a service done on my 4r 5th gen. I cant say how much it made me love my dinosaur 4runner. the interior is so much more refined and just well made compared to the taco. the new interior just feels cheap, sure its got tech but its just nowhere near nice enough to justify 47k in price. right now the 4R is the bargain.
Agreed that the 5th gen 4runner is WAY more comfortable to drive than the third gen Tacoma. Similar to you, I’ve owned the Tacoma, third gen tundra, and the 4runner. The tundra power was crazy, but man that truck is a cheap pos.
Glad to hear that regarding comfort. I had a 2020 Tacoma and unloaded it because it was just too small and the seating position was awful on any drive over 30-45 minutes. I'm strongly considering a 4R purchase while I can still get one, but I've been hesitant out of fear long-term it would feel like I was back in a Tacoma.
Yes, they’re slow, they’re gas hogs, and they’re dinosaurs but I wouldn’t trade mine for anything. I wanted reliability and simplicity, I knew what I was getting into when I bought mine, and I’m fine giving up some things to gain other things. Glad I was able to pick one up before the new 6th Gen. I didn’t want a 4 cylinder turbo with a price increase.
Complaining that a 4Runner isn't fast enough is like buying an EV and complaining that you can't fill up at the gas station when the power gets low. People are morons.

I added the Banks pedal Monster as well with a S&B cold air in take. Dammm i love driving it!!! Love my 2024 4Runner@DScott-qp4tv
@@justinlt99 Thank you for the kind words and for tuning in! I have no experienced lag of any kind in the 4Runner.
@@ZetaDogProductions Awesome. Any recommendations on dealers in SA? I'm in Houston and had to fight through some pretty slimey dealings when I bought the Tacoma.
@@justinlt99 I dealt with with Rick at Red McCombs. He's a straight shooter, no BS. The dealership is meh, but he's easy to work with.
Tbh if you want speed/acceleration + reliability, gotta go with the 2nd gen tundra with that v8. Thing just picks up
I will take my 23 4runner all day!
Whats mpg getting
@@lpnjp I'm averaging 17.5 mpg mixed driving.
You have a great vehicle that will last you a long time. Don’t listen to the naysayers. They don’t know what they’re talking about.
I also have a Trd off-road forerunner one of the best vehicles ever made.
The good things outweigh the bad.
I had a 2013 and 2016 Tacoma. And after about a couple of years of having the 2016 Tacoma, I sold it because the engine/transmission combo was a no no for me. I liked the 2013 much better.
If you want more HP, Magnussen Supercharger. Same reliability.
This!
The name is too unique “4runner “ deliver speed in 2 business days from Japan 😅afraid of cops could chase me
Wait…. what was the dinosaur again?
It’s the most dependable reliable mid sized vehicle in the world bar none
Call me cavewoman! I love my dinosaur. I just got a 2024 4Runner Limited RWD (pavement prowler). The only thing I'm having trouble with after 2 weeks is finding the right seat position. My 2019 Jeep Cherokee had a more comfortable seat, but a comfortable seat in a car that doesn't run well is kind of useless.
Good thing there’s plenty of aftermarket seat cushions out there
I just looked at a brand new 4th gen tacoma (trd off road, non premium) today while I was getting a service done on my 4r 5th gen.
I find the 4runner a lot more comfortable to be in.
I don't get it my 24 Pro 4Runner is great I didn't think it was a race car when I bought it
Yes, they’re slow, they’re gas hogs, and they’re dinosaurs but I wouldn’t trade mine for anything. I wanted reliability and simplicity, I knew what I was getting into when I bought mine, and I’m fine giving up some things to gain other things. Glad I was able to pick one up before the new 6th Gen. I didn’t want a 4 cylinder turbo with a price increase.
Keep that Dino 🦖 they’re going extinct again.
Complaining that a 4Runner isn't fast enough is like buying an EV and complaining that you can't fill up at the gas station when the power gets low.
People are morons.
driving with flip flop shoes is most precarious
New 24 tacoma is junk new tundra junk new 25 4 runner will be junk also
I will take the dinosaur over the new over priced crap any day
