  • The 2023 Toyota 4Runner and the 2023 Lexus GX may be outdated in many ways, but they are also one of the best built and most reliable vehicles of all time. Automotive Engineer David Chao explains why these two models - built at Tahara plant in Japan - may outlast all other SUVs in the market in terms of reliability. In fact, David provides solid 10 reasons why these two can easily last 20, 30, or even 40 or 50 years down the road.

I can testify the 4Runner are long lasting and durable vehicles. Had my first one, a 2013 4Runner, for eight years, and put over 162k hard miles on it as it was my patrol vehicle. Other than routine maintenance never had a single problem…thing was a tank. We loved it so much we bought my wife a 2017 4Runner TRD Off Road and to date not a single problem. I trust the 4Runner so much I bought an Army Green TRD pro 4Runner. My brother has and his wife have a 2013 and 2017 4Runner. My father has had two 4Runner’s, an FJ Cruiser, and now a 2023 Tacoma.

I've still got my '98 Limited I bought new.
BUT 😁, it's only got 70,000 original, garage kept miles on it. Needless to say I've always had a couple other extra means of transportation also.

It’s the perfect vehicle to pair up with a small gas sipper IMO. Because of the bad gas mileage. Buying a new 4Runner and a new Corolla would be perfect!!

Sometimes when it’s that old it’s not a failure on a part tho. It’s just it’s life span.
      I have a 2008 sequoia 5.7L. 216575 trouble free miles.
But….I’ve had to replace the front door speakers due to the originals literally crumbling into pieces from age.
I had to replace the ac blower motor at 214k miles. I would say the original failed. Just wore out after 16 years!
      My paint…same thing.
I hope I get to 450k like you. Got the wife a new rav4 XSE (under msrp) last year. Love that too. Pretty solid. I can see it lasting 15 years.
But these ev cars…I can’t see them lasting 15 years without a battery replacement. That part is extremely expensive.

Did you need to put ceramic coating or ppf to make your paint last?

      @@ashresearcher I highly suggest something.
My 2008 5.7L sequoia runs like new but the paint is shot on the roof and hood at 216k miles. It’s been bad for about 25k miles or so.

We bought a 2023 GX 460 Premium Plus in Starfire Pearl with Roya Red interior, and we love it. At the same time, so many other people are complaining about how dated it is and lacks technology. It turns heads and commands respect, and suits our needs. You can keep the Kia and Hyundai SUVs and all other SUVs. It performs flawlessly on Texas beaches with street tires while jacked-up trucks get stuck left and right.

I have owned three new GX Lexus. A 2006, 2012 and a 2017. 17 years of use and not one penny spent on a repair. They have performed flawlessly. I just bought a 2023 GX Luxury trim in Caviar with red interior. Has the towing package and off road package. I believe the 2023, since it’s the last V-8, will be a timeless classic that could go down as the best SUV ever built. I love what I see from the new GX as well. I predict it will be a smash hit. I am on the list to get one. However, I am now planning on keeping my 2023 and let my wife have the 2024. I’ll see if the 2023 can outlast me. I am 57 so I bet it does!

I just bought clean CARFAX one owner FL 2021 GX w/ 29k miles with the Premium Plus and Trailer tow package. Original MSRP was $59,800 and I paid $45,500 after much time and patience. I watched for Domestic Dealers selling orphan GX’s. Most Ford and Chevy Dealers can’t get top dollar for a Lexus when they are up against a neighboring Lexus Dealer. I’m retired and I wasn’t willing to spend $65k for a new 2023. Every Dealer I checked was adding $1,000’s in ridiculous charges up to an obscene $6k. Lexus Dealers are currently asking from $52k to $56k before they add anything. Take your time and look in FL where lower mileage vehicles with no rust are plentiful. They are also cheaper in FL than Atlanta or Dallas. I know I shopped tirelessly. I paid $650 to have it shipped from South FL to Atlanta in an enclosed trailer.

I absolutely love my 2022 4Runner! 5005 aluminum is not only more expensive, but it cost more to work with as well. I believe this is the main reason why Toyota refuses to utilize it in the construction of its vehicles. I really do not think it is because steel resists denting.

Thank you David for your insights as a detailed-oriented engineer. As an anesthesiologist, I can appreciate the need to understand every little detail.
Question: can the GX take regular unleaded gas? There are recommendations but there is also real life pragmatic actions. Is the longevity of the engine significantly affected? Thanks!

David, I have a 2003 Lexus GX 470 with over 200K and I just pulled a Uhaul 6' x 12' trailer last week fully loaded 200 miles at 75 MPH and it didn't blink. I did the same thing last summer 400 miles and it performed flawlessly. The only thing I didn't like about the GX was the air suspension. It was causing me headaches and did the strut masters conversion to coil springs. I wouldn't hesitate to drive this vehicle cross country. I have a 2014 Lexus GS 350 and prefer driving the GX 470 as my daily driver. It's more comfortable and quieter. The only downside is the gas mileage. The GX is a tank.

David - would you be able to do a review on a new Infiniti Qx60 and it's Nissan sibling... I'm curious to see where Nissan / Infiniti quality is in the current state and if these vehicles are durable / reliable...thanks again for your thoughtful insights...I appreciate your reviews.

Excellent video. Just traded in my 2013 FJ with 222k miles for a 2023 Pro TRD 4Runner. Hope it’s as great as the FJ was.

Hi David, another awesome video. I’m debating on buying a 2024 Tacoma or buying the last gen of the 4Runner. Which would be my 3rd one. I’m assuming the 2024 4Runner will remain unchanged and could possibly be the last one of the 5th gen. Can you confirm this?

I'm planning to buy a 4Runner in the coming months and this nice vid really confirms I'm going to be making the right choice. I wish i had enough money to buy another and keep it on ice for use down the road.

Great video!!! Thanks…. I predict that while available the current 4Runner will outsell both the new GX and Land Cruiser. What will Toyota do then?

There’s a reason 4Runner had it’s best sales year to date, even when critics call it a “dinosaur”. Turns out some people like a quality vehicle with reliable powertrain

9:04 that's correct about the 1gr-fe being used out of the United States in the land cruiser 300 series and the 70 series as well. That being said the 1grfe will be still in production for years to come.

2008 4Runner. Never a problem. I'll probably drive it for the rest of my life. I'm 54. I've LOVE to get another 4Runner, but why?! It's so sad that people feel like they need to get a new vehicle every 3-5 years just to spice things up. I guess I'm boring.

I worked at Toyota in my college Co-Op for multiple semesters and the body fit is literally a work of art. They do it by sound and feel bending doors and panels to that level of quality by hand, not using some magic lasers or fit jigs.

Toyota is the living proof that a business can be highly profitable while still maintaining high quality standards at reasonable prices. While other manufacturers reduce costs by laying people off and cutting parts’ cost, Toyota’s excellence is based in the continuous improvement of its collaborators through training and continuous supplier development.

Let's hope they stick to their traditional approach. Like all automakers, Toyota has been forced into some compromises due to the supply chain issues of recent times. David alludes to this in the video.

I have had 4 Land Cruisers over the years, one I owned and used very, very hard for over 20 years alone. While I think the new Land Cruiser Prado we are about to get in the states is undeniably cool looking and really tugs at my heart strings with its 60 series looks, I realized why get a new, unproven Prado with way more tech when I can get the 5th gen 4Runner which is essentially the current Prado with the proven powertrain and build quality and just the right amount of modern tech yet retaining the simplicity…. And did considerably less money. So we are picking up a ‘23 4Runner in the exact spec we wanted, that was sitting on a dealer lot AND got a $3,500 discount on it which was a great surprise. Another big deciding factor for us was the lack of 3 row option on the new Land Cruiser. Having 3 kids, that was a key determining factor.

I own a 2011 Lexus gs350, the quality of that vehicle is just so good, everybody believes is rather newer than what is it, have had a couple offers but I live it as my daily driver, smooth ride reliable all I’ve done is maintenance that’s about it after 6 years of ownership, I’m ready to put my on a 2021 GX or RX350 f sport, worth every penny, sure you don’t get the latest tech nor the polish interior but you buy Lexus for quality, durability and reliability not the latest and greatest.
