Expanding to the reimagined series merchandise! Interesting. I agree the purpose of the two ships are very different. The TOS galactica was hundreds of “yahrens” old (I think 500 yahrens) and was used for many different purposes like battle and deep space exploration. The reimagined galactica was a 40 year old warship from the first cylon war. I also think the size was very different… that the tos version would dwarf the reimagined version, but I can’t confirm that. I find it interesting that while they are the “same ship” the engineering and technology in universe for both of them are so wildly different. The command bridge for instance in the tos is visible on the front of the vessel while in the reimagined it’s deep in the hull protected from attacks.
I really liked the pilot and first season (I also loved the Richard Hatch/TG story). After that I felt the show (my opinion only) tried to many ideas that did not work. I’m hoping that the new BSG learns from the classic and modern series mistakes. The potential is still great!
Thanks for the vid. Both are beautiful. I wish they were a little larger, & it would be awesome to see a battle damaged version of the new Galactica, because the ship really went thru a lot over the seasons. They didn't really do that for the original Galactica. It stayed pristine till the end.
The few times we see the RDM Galactica in flashbacks in the show, all those ribs have armor connecting them and it looks a LOT more like the original Galactica. The in-universe reason is that the armor was removed after the war as a bean counting decision to make the ship lighter, and cheaper to operate. RDM said a couple times that if he’d had his druthers, he’d have made his Galactica look exactly like the original, but the suits at the network insisted on it not looking the same, and he had to fight to get it to look as much like the original as it did.

Eagelmoss did release a Blood and Chrome variant of Galactica too. Sad RDM's vision couldn't be fullfilled completely but at least flashbacks and the video game canonised variations of the original designs as earlier models.
The original Battlestar Galactica remains my absolute favorite capital ship in science fiction. It always felt like a ship built for purpose. One look and I knew it was a warship. Clearly defined areas, engines, main haul, landing bays, command area. The Galactica is one of the only combination carrier/battleship designs that really seemed to work. Real world, the various attempts to combine the two failed spectacularly. Too many compromises. In sci-fi either designs looked a little silly/impractical or one function was seriously dominate over the other. By separating the landing bays the Galactica seemed to get around most of those problems. The reimagined version did a pretty good job of capturing the same feel of functionality and purpose. If I ever did a formal list it would probably be in the top 10. The reimagined Pegasus took more design cues from original battlestar design but I personally found it to be a little too busy looking. It was trying too hard to be bigger and badder. It didn’t work for me.
I slept on these and sadly only bought a couple of Eaglemoss BSG ships. I do, however, have the Hasbro Titanium Ultra modern Galactica from the early aughts. If you have both modern versions how does the Hasbro and Eaglemoss compare?
The idea behind the original Battlestar was that each colony had their own. Instead of a fleet of smaller ships and platforms to defend one planet, all the defenses were combined into one big, bad ass ship that could handle any situation because it had a little bit of everything. In reality, history shows that big ships are not the direction that modern warfare should go, and by combining the strengths of different systems you're also combining their weaknesses. But there's something about it that's just naturally appealing.
Best way to improve both ships? Make them life-sized and functional. Otherwise, I can't judge the miniature of the Original Galactica. I just have the two different versions of the new Galactica... from the series and the one from Blood and Chrome.
It would be nice to have a functional Battlestar to take a colony to Mars. Send some shuttles escorted by a squadron of vipers down to the surface to establish a base. A few round trips between Mars and Earth at light speed will make the process painless.
@@dbsql6238 With a functional Battlestar... why bother with Mars? With a functional hyperdrive we could go anywhere. (but yeah, Mars would be a good first step. I would love to be able to see Olympus Mons from the Martian surface.
The reimagines series model is kind of hard to get more then "close enough" due to the fact that the CG model had progressive damage done to it over the series that stuck around so having it in the retirement strip-down state for retirement with most of its armour and heavy guns removed but before one of its landing bays was glassed off to be part of the museum tour was logical as the one size fits all solution. As for the original series Galactica, the Battlestars where ancient warships that had seen service since before the thousand year long war with the Cylons even began, with Galactica and Pegasus being the only ships that survived the entire war up to its end and Galactica the exodus that followed it and I think the design nailed that 1000 year old ancient warship who has seen more days then any man has. You are just missing 1 now: the Blood and Chrome version which is what she looked like in that miniseries and before her being striped down into the TV series version.
I bought the Modern Galactica from Master Replicas a few months back during a buying frenzy of Eaglemoss replicas from that company. It's really ugly, not coming anywhere near the beauty of TOS Galactica. The Modern Pegasus is great, though. I highly recommend that miniature for anyone interested. I found the majority of the tech from Modern Galactica to be extremely underwhelming, especially everything Cylon. The show was good, but I prefer the original series by far.

did Hasbro make a Titanium of the newer one? i feel like i have it...and it was bigger than the $5 ones. More like a $12-20 one
