- This video was done to support my class which meets in the Plein air along Cape Ann and the North Shore area. We meet at different parks and harbors throughout the summer painting watercolor outdoors. In this video we are painting against the light. Are subject is dark background light and luminous, in the photo that you see in the beginning of the video all of those darks are washed out. In the watercolor we tried to revitalize them by using graded washes. In fact we use graded washes through the sky in foreground as well as in the shadows. Some benefits to using these rated washers are A luminous feeling to the watercolor, a feeling of light bouncing in the shadows, and of light moving across surfaces.
You can find a A short video on creating graded washes by going here:

In each video I will address some of the challenges with each motif and ways to meet those challenges. Along the way I hope you experience the same thrill of working under an open sky that we did.

Fantastic Gary! Never get tired of watching you in action.
Glad you enjoy it! Thx Marian
Wonderful expressive painting, so much light. I love your brushwork, the way you apply the graded washes to small details as well as the bigger picture. Insightful and very helpful as always, many thanks for sharing :-)
Thanks, I love your tutorials.....your insights are invaluable.
What a wonderful tutorial. Thank you for producing it.
Graded washes are the beauty of watercolor and your a master of the medium. Thank you Gary for sharing you professional advice.
Genius!
So awesome, thank you so much. These demos help so much!
Thank you for these tutorials. They are very helpful understanding watercolor.
THANK YOU THANK YOU for actually verbalizing and instructing. So any people are uploading videos, merrily painting along with some stupid music as background AND SAYING NOTHING AT ALL. No instruction whatever. I guess we're supposed to use our psychic abilities to figure out what he/she is doing. Useless. You have presented something really useful here. Keep up the quality instruction. So many of us depend on people like you. Than you again.
Very helpful with the actual picture in rightside corner, great painting good teacher thanks Gary
Nice painting and tutorial. The big blue lift looks like a Straddle Carrier similar to what they use to carry containers around the harbor.
Another excellent painting, Gary!
Beautiful capture of a huge theme.
Like the way you improvised the bottom right corner
