  • I know many DIYers watch my channel, painting free hand takes some time to get good at it, if you are not experienced, using tape and these techniques you should have no problem getting a nice straight line on the top of the baseboards

I have hardwood floors and will be replacing baseboards. I'm not sure of the exact steps to do this correctly. I will be using a spray gun. I need to apply caulk at the floor line and the wall. I'm not sure I should use tape or not when caulking, I don't think I'll need to necessarily. I've seen videos of people not painting over the caulk, but to me it sticks out and is not a perfect match. Once the caulk dries, I'm assuming that I'll have to tape slightly off the caulk at the floor line to ensure all the caulk is covered? But then I'm painting a bit on the flooring. As far as the wall, I'm not sure if the caulk should taped to paint the color of the baseboards, the wall, or try and split it down the middle. Thanks for any guidance here.

Hi there, not sure I totally understand, I would only caulk along the top of the baseboard if there is a gap that looks bad, try to get it as tight as possible, caulking in my opinion is the last resort when installing new baseboard, I never caulk along th floor and bottom of the baseboard, and yes if you do need to caulk then yes painting g over the caulking is definitely what I would suggest, if I am not understanding your comment please let me know. I would suggest going through my videos as well if you need some more tips, I have alot of videos you can check out. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Hope I answered your question

@@TheCanadianHomePainter I know that baseboards are caulked at floor line in bathrooms and kitchens to prevent water from getting behind baseboards and wicking up the drywall. Assuming this could be done on hardwoods throughout home to protect as well (mopping, spills, etc.). Currently the baseboards are just finished with quarter round and no caulk.

@Jake Maddox I wouldn't, i understand why people might, I just never do it. I think it looks better to not caulk along the bottom

@@TheCanadianHomePainter Yeah, doing a bit more research. Looks like hardwood floors need room to expand contract and caulking will not last long anyway. Shoe molding is preferred in instances where the gap is 1/8” or bigger.

Might be the tape you're using, I like the frog tape for the straightest lines
