How to install marble on bench seat and shower curb. The marble for the bench seat will have to be fabricated and made to the right size, cutting a large piece of slab marble can be difficult without the right tools. The marble for the curb on the other hand will be of a manageable size and can be easily cut to length on a wet saw. The marble should be set on the bench so that it is slightly tilted towards the inside of the shower, so that any water that falls on the seat will flow of and towards the drain, the same goes for the marble on the shower curb, but the tilt of the curb should only be slight so that it will not interfere with the bottom of a glass door that will be installed. Use a polymer modified thinset to install the marble.

The sills and bench seat are actually 1 1/4", they were fabricated from a slab, but you can use your 1/2" material if you like, once it is set in the thinset it will be just fine.

For a floating bench of 3 cm granite, mine will be 36 x 14". Supported on 3 sides. The tiles could support it but I'm thinking of screwing 3/4" x 1/8 " aluminum L moulding for support to the studs rocked with Densshield then bondo the granite to it, then install tiles butt to or leave a grout line. The walls are not square so this leaves much more room to place the slab with a slope. Every take on this kind of slab attachment? Its my first shower install DIY.

Nice work, as always. Does the weight of the slab ever cause unwanted settling of the mortar, and change the pitch? I didn’t see you put in any shims to maintain position. Thank you for sharing your craft in these videos.

    I gotcha
What is the adhesive you used here ? Thin set ? Mortar ?
there's a product out now by liquid nails made specifically for granite and marble as to not staining any granite
where it does look appealing I was more curious as to what you used in the video
    for the seat/threshold
I'm just doing a shower threshold with a very heavy piece of granite top
so what I'm trying to decide is...
To follow your method or look toward the new liquid nails product but
again thank you for all your advice

Sal, I am up to tiling the curb. I too have a solid piece to go on the top of the curb. We are going to lay 4x8 porcelain tiles on the walls and the vertical sides of the curb. I saw that in this video you set the top before tiling the outside and inside of the curb. Is this the way all the time or for some particular reason on this job? Thanks in advance...

    Sal,
Thanks for the instruction. Very helpful. Are your sills 2cm or 3cm thick in the video? I am a do-it-yourself tile setter at home. I am currently re-doing my own master bath shower cubicle with porcelain tiles and new stone new sills. I am thinking of using 1/2 " thick travertine stone as sills cut to fit in the field from 18 inch square tiles. Are these 1/2" stone sills thick enough, or do I need to have thicker stone sills fabricated by a professional stone supplier? Thanks.

You should be able to find a marble sill that long, if you have been looking in the big box stores with no luck, go to a tile distributor, they will probably have them. I have no trouble getting them here.

***** Sal, you would not believe the problem I am having finding someone to get a marble sill here in Iowa! These are tile and stone distributors, and they all act like they have never heard of such a thing! Guess most of the "tile pros" around here use tile to cap their curbs. Wrong thing to do, I don't need to tell you that, but anybody reading this and considering not using a solid piece for their curb sill, think again! The grout will fail, and there is no such thing as luck as far as where water will decide leak out. As I found out just four months after my project. Sal, it was the only thing I did not follow to the letter from watching you...and guess what...yep, now I getta fix it!!!

Hey Sal, Love the videos! Question on adhering the marble to the top of the curb. I had the curb top cut from the same slab as my bathroom counter tops. I let the counter top guys install the curb top. I have done everything else They just used silicone and shims to get the slope. Is that going to be enough to hold it in place. Or, an i going to have to take off the curb top and install it with thinset?

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  6 років тому

Thinset is a much better idea, silicone is fine for a countertop and a stone slab, there is nothing to adhere to except the top edges of the cabinets, a shower curb is a surface prepared and for tile or a solid surface to be adhered to with a mortar.

Hi! Just watched this due to concerns about installers installing granite on top of my nice 2 tier schluter benches. They used blob method w/a shim. So yeah there is void under them. Should I get them to reinstall - or should I just take them out (they shouldn't stick too much - your newest video about how to key in mortar seems to indicate that these would be easy to take up)? or could I just use sealant 100% silicone to seal around the seat then tile the faces of the benches and be ok? This is for steam shower.
    Thanks for video!

@@SalDiBlasi Hey Sal, I just got through pulling the top slab up myself. Wasn't too hard - loosing a whole weekend fretting over it and now doing it. What did I find? A paint stick in the back with very small still WET blobs. My daughter and I very carefully lifted it up. At least we didn't destroy my kerdi boards and it's gonna be so good to put these in correctly. (Helps to write about it...at least I didn't pay for install as it was free - be careful when it's free !)
My hubby doesn't do this type of work and frankly I won't let him without supervision - he doesn't take offense :). After he got back from deployment (gone a year) I started this project (he helps w/tear down:) - this time we are doing our Master Bath! It's gonna take me months (been 5 already) to complete this job but will be worth it.
If you want some pictures I'm happy to share - took a quick video of the mess. Thought about creating a youtube of my own - "whyIDIY" but this is already taken up by twitter #whyidiy. This is the very reason I DIY because many folks don't have the gift of being able to correctly do any type of construction because details matter (sorry hubby). Just like many folks I work with cannot write software for the life of them -- thereby tainting the rest of us diligent hard working knowledgeable developers!!!

use the non notched side first on the bench to fill any micro voids, then go over with the notched side, creating even grooves. when back buttering, only use the flat side, notches on 2 surfaces coming together will be counter productive, finally, get your self a decent level at least 400mm long
