The BEST VR MODS, ranked & rated! // the VR mods you NEED to play

- Опубліковано 31 тра 2024
- It's no secret that I love VR mods, throughout 2022 the amount of amazing new VR games we''ve been able to play thanks to talented VR modders is mind blowing and the mods just seem to be getting BETTER with each passing week! However, after playing every VR mod I could get my hands on I've been thinking about ranking the BEST VR mods into my own little personal list. None of these mods are bad, they're all put together by incredibly passionate and talented people but some VR mods feel a little better suited to the virtual reality experience than others. With that in mind I'll be ranking the mods across three categories:
- "Pretty Cool" (a fun experience that if played seriously is still best left to flat screen),
- "Very Cool" (a nearly passable native VR experience, still in need of a little fine tuning)
- "UNBELIEVEABLE" (a s close to native as you can get without actually being native, a truly awesome experience in VR).
To win a copy of Half Life 2 VR two weeks before public release just follow the Gleam link and get your entries in, I'll be picking 5 winners on Friday the 2nd of September and emailing you each a code:
(*requires an original flat copy of Hlaf Life 2 on Steam to play*)
Some VR mods are actually also some of the best VR games I've ever played, for example I firmly believe that Doom 3 VR is one of the best Quest 2 games you can play to date and Half Life 2 VR looks set to be one of the best PC VR games this year despite not being a "native product". Each of the VR mods mentioned in this video have been essential to the growth of the VR gaming community and the modders behind them are key in helping virtual reality gaming reach the mainstream, my rankings are of course completely subjective and based on my own opinions and preferences.

Join here for a chance to win 1 of 5 early copies of Half Life 2 VR, winners will be picked on Friday 2nd September (two weeks before the launch of HL2VR), you do need a copy of the original flat version of Half Life 2 on Steam to play the VR version: gleam.io/xjkpg/half-life-2-vr-early-access-steam-key-competition
Oh hey can you tell me how you recorded the gameplay for L4D2? Shadowplay only wants to capture the messed up screen and not steam VR view. Any thoughts?
@@EQOAnostalgia you can use an OpenVR plug-in for OBS, this will basically capture the feed (right or left eye) from any Steam VR game/OpenVR game. Its what I use for a lot of Steam VR games these days, especially ones that are harder to capture smoothly (Green Hell VR): obsproject.com/forum/resources/openvr-input-plugin.534/
@@BeardoBenjo Thanks man, looking into it.
@@EQOAnostalgia no worries at all, I know how hard it is to capture VR content so always happy to help 😁
If you use an Oculus headset you can also use Oculus Mirror, its installed by default but a little hidden. It basically opens a window (which you can capture) and it shows you exactly what you're seeing inside the headset on the screen - Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics\OculusMirror.exe
An updated VR mod ranking video for 2024 would be amazing!
The Valheim VR mod has been the love of my disabled life this month, having now survived 435 day’s totaling 220 real life hours! Love your list Beardo and so thankful for the flatscreen to VR modding community!
Yeah i been messing with that in between L4D and it's really well done. It feels like an official supported mod.
435 days... WOW!!! I'd love to see your settlement, it must be a small village/incredible castle after existing in the game for that long 😍
Amen brother
@@BeardoBenjo personally after 200 I only had a shed-looking house lol. had a nice dock though
Probably THE BEST video you've ever done on this channel, production, value wise. I strongly believe it should be a yearly edition in the future.
In concur.
Modding community, you are the real MVPs. Thank you!
And Benjo, thanks for covering it
So many games I didn't know had VR Mods, one of your best videos to date. Great work.
Thank you Ben, you always do so much for us modders!! Also, I'm honored that the Dark Souls mod made the "God tier", even with the janky first person hacked camera []-D
i don't understand the world anymore old games and Half Life 2 is back in fashion because people watch VR play and rockstar filth takes VR modders to court... Ej rockstar does it like guys at valve they sell 20 year old games again because they allow modders to make them suitable for VR!! even such a money-horny club like you can't say no to that... shitty company
The Resident Evil vr mods are the best mods in a game by far. Experiencing all 4 games in VR was a dream come true and some of the best experiences I've had in my 25 years+ of gaming.
Can't wait for the rtx 4080 and Valve Index 2 to experience them all again.
They run like shit on my GTX 1060😢 i guess it's time for an upgrade
@@gerardonavarro3400 Yeah 1060 can't run many VR games at all. You need at LEAST a 1070 to run half of the VR games smoothly. I'd recommend a 1080 personally if you can find one at a good price.
@@justmonika2345 Just got upgraded from a r9 390 to a 1080ti so i can fully enjoy my vr!
I got a 3080 and I cant run them, they look like paper walls and dolls. I even downloaded de VR texture 4k mod
did u buy the 4080 for $1200 lol
One of your best videos yet. I had no idea so many of the games I already own had VR mods. You've just expanded my Quest 2 library immensely.
Same dude, Doom 1 & 2, Dark Souls, Valheim, Outer Wilds. Definitely have some modding to do lol.
Thanks a lot for the recommendations, and explaining the caveats with each.
I love that this is a great way to re-play some amazing classic games. I've tried the HL2 mod, and it was so surreal being in a VR version of a game I've played so many times on a flat screen.
I’m glad you put this in an easy one stop video! I’ve seen so many mods in VR and can’t begin to know what to start with!
This has been the year of pc flatscreen - vr mods honestly. Resi 2, 3, 7 & village, GTA V, Outer Wilds, Cyberpunk and Half life 2 next month! Triple A VR games are pretty low on the ground at the moment but the modding scene is so good that they can be actual port level. Praydog's Resi mods are actually insane! 😅😂
it is pretty interesting i also did a lot of mod play and those resident evils are really good games :-)
Outer wilds in VR was simply awe inspiring
Why did he put GTA and RDR2 in the memoriam?
@@germanmeza2682 weil the take 2 company is a bunch of greedy ....they do not even do a single thing in vr support for their own games...lawyer i mean ! shame on their social behavior and long live luke ross !
@@germanmeza2682 It because rockstar games sent a letter to the creator of GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption & Mafia VR mods to stop making them and take them offline. Vorpx has also got rid of all rockstar game profiles.
Love your videos, man. They give fuel to my Quest 2! Keep them coming, cheers from Brazil!
little after I got VR, i realized how perfect Outer Wilds would be in it, found out there was a praised mod but was still unsure of how good it was - until your review here, now it is a must
Man, really thank you for showing us EmuVR, it's amazing. I've just seen that you can even play online with many people on the same room playing split screen. Amazing
Great Video, and with thought and shown bias where applicable. Thanks for taking the time to not only put this together, but to find, instal and play through these to be able to rate them for us!
Bro nah to say it confused the hell out of me seeing clips from my Valheim VR video on here would be a giant understatement lmao what are the chances. Great video mate! I'm definitely going to have to check some of these mods out!
I lost count of how many times you said "wonky".. Left for Dead in VR is defiantly a title to be excited about, lot's of fond memories there. I think the bigger titles like Horizon need a little more stabilization before I would give them a try but the Half Life 2 mod being released on my birthday is awesome. Cracking video buddy
Bro I still play No One Lives Forever 2 regularly, top 5 favorite games for sure. Much love for showing me there is VR for it, what a time to be alive.
I bought Half-Life 2 recently anticipating this VR mod based on your previous coverage of this back in April. I thought I bought the Orange Box at one point, but some how it escaped me. I may be buying some of the others on this list because of the VR mods. I tend to buy way too many games and not get to all of them. I think a lot of us are like that. :)
If you don't have it yet, Valheim is an amazing survival game, and while I haven't tried it in VR yet, it looks really good!
This is a GREAT list, thank you for putting this together!
just found this video, first time watching this channel, was skipping thru the chapters , ithought, hmm whats in memorism, suddenly interested in your channel. mad respect my friend, so many people are lost in such horrible ways daily, so many are suffering, becoming disabled suddenly. (i did one year ago) and life is short as hell. thankyou for having respect. even on the internet.
The modders have outdone theirselves! Love this list! I absolutely can’t wait for HLA 2 VR. Love that you took the time to put this video out! Thanks Ben!
HUGE VR NEWS!!
Master modder @praydog has been continuing work that @TheNewJavaman started by porting much of his RE Engine Framework to Unreal Engine even if the game doesn’t have VR plugins.
This is one of the most exciting things to happen in the VR Modding scene because it could mean VR mods for HUNDREDS of incredible AAA Unreal Engine games in full VR.
The mod features full in-engine 6DOF movement, synced eye stereoscopic 3D, detached look from weapons and more! Though designed to work universally with UE4 games, it’s also a fantastic starting point for other modders to build off of to add in full motion controls, etc.
There’s no release date yet, but get ready for some VERY exciting times ahead of us in the wonderful world of VR modding!
The Doom 3 BFG vr mod deserves to be in the top tier. It really does feel like a native VR game with full motion controls and loads of additional vr option. It even has vr settings built into the game menus. Plus the visuals look amazing in VR.
Cant get this running. Says I'm missing a bunch of dll files. Any advice?
I loved the atmosphere of RTCW back when it came out, and can't wait to try it in VR!
Very cool list - Alien Isolation is my favourite also - It could even be my favourite VR experience ever.
Great video ben
same here
Great video man. A few mods there i wasnt even aware of!
Quality video man, so much here to dig into. Thanks very much
Alien isolation in vr is one of the scariest and most intense gaming experiences you can find. It blows my mind... i think im 3/4 of the way through the campaign and my god have a shat my pants a million times lol. Its heavy on the heart lol. As a tiny kid Alien 1 the film gave me nightmares haha so to now be 33 yrs old experiencing the Alien world in VR is like facing my childhood fears haha. Its soooo epic lol. I have to say tho....although not a mod...half life alyx is the most incredible gaming experience ive ever had. Cant believe how far gaming has come... felt like not that long ago we were play shitty 2d games. Vr has restored my love for gaming again after a 10 year hiatus. Bring it on man ...fingers crossed bonelab is fire :)
The 'In Memoriam' segment was equally hilarious and depressing. I still have my fingers crossed for Farcry 5 in VR.
Why are these mods in memorium - were they cancelled and removed - takedown notices?
@@ROCKY44Takedown, it feels like everything related to Rockstar that has potential always gets taken down eventually.
@@DeathRaidenxIs there any way to still find them, like through duckduckgo?
There's a really small chance you might find a reupload somewhere, but don't get your hopes up. Most of us don't wanna risk a lawsuit.
I definitely echo wanting both Condemned games in VR. That bear chase will be something else and getting up close and personal to enemies and visceral combat would be great in VR. Personally I feel the same with Wipeout as you do with Subnautica, I can't go back to playing Wipeout flat on my PS5, it has to be VR.
Your list cannot come any more perfect. Just got Valve Index and wanting to know what older games I'm missing
Well worth joining the Flat 2 VR discord group, they do amazing work and are incredibly active. If you wanna know exactly how to get these old games running in VR then it's the best place to be ✌🏻
Very enjoyable, thanks!
Great video. I hope it helps get these mods out there more. Of course I would have put Half-Life 2 VR Mod at top (even though I have never played this version), since I remember playing a version with some weird Hydro controllers on my DK2 (but it was awesome).
Thank you for you're vr videos and stuff. Good stuff.
Thanks for the great
compilation.
Great work 👍.
What a great video. The only one I haven't played is Alien Isolation.. always avoided it because I already found it unnerving in 2d. But.. time to check it out :)
This is my kind of video as I play LOADS of VR modded games and I cannot wait for HL2! I've been playing Alyx again to prepare myself and I forgot just how incredible it is. Maybe a live stream of Alyx is in order?! (Unless you did that before I subscribed to you)
Valheim is SOOOO good in VR, we had talked about doing a Valheim Content Creator Server....with some menu cleanup I think it could be amazing
Does the mod work for multiplayer as well?
@@9letterstudios it does indeed
Got Risk of Rain after seeing this video & I’m enjoying it. Thanks for the knowledge.
You my friend are God Tier in the world of VR UA-cam videos :D Thank you for this!!
Fantastic list! Really looking forward to Half-Life 2
Even though I do have a CRT myself, I'm still interested to give EmuVR a try. Also can't wait to play Half Life 2 VR. I have played Doom 1, 2, 3, RTTCW and Half Life in VR. I'm actually surprised I didn't see Vittorio Romeo's Quake VR mod on that list.
Awesome video man!!
Thank you bud 😁
Surprised Skyrim vr wasn’t on the list, with all the mods you need to get it to actually be playable it’s basically a mod and not official 😂 Good list but Skyrim vr would definitely be at the top of mine, too good.
Can't wait for Skyblivion to be finished
Thanks for this comment recently purchased a quest 2 n wasnt aware the mods would b so drastically needed for skyrim
@@caldwell2253 oh mods are needed but it’s definitely worth it, can literally make the game how u like
@@Mar-5016 i just lack the free time i want to be able to mess around with it
Get out of my UA-cam search history, Beardo. I was *just* looking into this and you’re freakin me out dropping this video now - which was very informative and great btw, thanks! 🤙
Thank you for compiling a list for us.
Cracking round up. Cracking video.
Valheim mid tier? bit of an odd choice, id say most people would put it in the top 3 best vr modded games since its one of the only ones with proper motion controls/mechanics built in. But you are right that the crafting is a bit janky, still tho, best one that implemented motion controls.
Id put Subnautica as the first on the low tier list to be honest and its not really a mod as it is offical and half baked. What a disappointment that was, looks amazing but completely shyt without full motion controls ... specially when you compare a unofficial mod for the likes of Valheim
ive been waiting to mod valheim till mistlands.. but when it comes and let it settle im gonna mod valheim.. sooo looking forward to see my builds in VR :D
Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast VR is a fantastic mod as well. It feels great wielding a lightsaber as Kyle Katarn in VR.
I tried Payday 2 in VR with mods to fix the VR and they made it an amazing experience also. Would def deserve a spot next list! I think if emuVR counts it would also count.
You right I forgot about that one. Certainly deserves to be there more than Life is Strange or Risk of Rain 2.
Both of the aforementioned mods just don't play very well IMO. Especially LOS.
Thx! Always the best!
Great list 👌
Great video!
Very good list - something that vr players can work with and really usefull recommendations ;-). Maybe i would have rated two forks and raft one tier higher. I didnt play hl2 oc (though i have very high hopes from what i have seen and heared). In general i can strongly recommend the flatscreen to vr discord!
Awsome video! Keep it up!

Picked up Wolfenstein 2 on sale last week. Can't wait to try it in VR.
It’s amazing and also pretty hard.. the first cutscene u got is pretty gruesome too ..
Omg, Emu VR seems like everything I wanted for vr, I should try it
Id have put Valheim into Godtier for sure. For my GraCa (5700xt) its runs very good, so many bugs have been fixed so far. The switch from flat to VR was absolutely mindblowing.
I disagree about Horizon Zero Dawn. I replayed it in VR all the way through and it was fantastic. I do have a 12700 KF with a RTX 3080 though. I would recommend it to any fans of Horizon Zero dawn if your computer is fast enough to play it.
I’m playing it and it’s simply amazing. I dropped forbidden west to play this too and I feel I’m Aloy!
Most generic open world game
Just a comment, Someone released a Voxel Doom which converts all sprites to voxels, even items.
So that´s perfect for Doom1.
He is currently working on Doom 2 voxels
The voxel mod works in QuestZDoom?
If you put vorpx in the list, reshade with depth3d should be here as well. It allows you to play doom 2016, doom eternal, wwz aftermath and many others in full 3d.
oh yeah, skyrim vr technically ISN'T a mod...
but if you don't mod it you're missing out on 80% of the experience. plank changes everything
Alien Isolation in VR plays perfectly from start to finish, its good stuff.
Incredible video
Thank you for this video. Learned a lot.
What a fantastic video. Would LOVE to see an update a year later. Cheers.
Nice seeing your choices. RIP to the VR mods that we lost🙁
I had more than half of those games on my to-do list and had paid for the luke ross mods. :(
although you do need to revert the game back to the second most recent version
These mods are no longer accessible? Do you know why?
@@jerichojericho9860 looks like my first reply was erased or something but every rockstar game mod was removed except for gta v which can still be found on luke's github. Take 2 the owners of rockstar were just butthurt at luke ross once they found out about him making a decent living off of their games through patreon
@@VitrescentObelisk thank you for clearing that up. It's because of VR modders that I buy multiple copies of games. You'd think they'd know that people like him increase their sales and reach. What out of touch idiots.
Great list B-Dub! I actually have quite a few of these. Shame that I have such commitment issues that'll probably never complete single one. SMMFH. Question: what does motion controls mean? Because I have Alien Isolation and it works perfectly with my Quest Touch controller. That must mean motion controls is something beyond the type of controller you're using?
thank you i didn't know about half life 2 😍
Is it worth getting Sidequest for the Quest 3? Did you make a video on how you need to play the non VR titles 0in order for them to work or are they all via Virtual Desktop? Thanks
I wish Luke Ross or Praydog would make a VR mod for Dying Light.🤞
He's making one for Dead Island 2
If you go to Flatscreen to VR Discord channel and ask nicely, you'll discover GTAV, RDR2 and Mafia VR mods didn't leave us. They're just in protective custody. Thanks Take Two. 🖕👍
Dead Space using Vorpx is on my list of faves. ♥️ Defs needs a native plugin.
Hoping Luke Ross does a Stray VR mod. 😁
he was working on Bioshock VR when the takedown notice happened. I was REALLY looking forward to that
Shhhh
@@madiimad meh. It's not illegal to share it since Take Two aren't a government and it's not intellectual property.
Hi Beardo and everyone. I wanted to get your opinion on this guys. I run a 12400F, RTX3080 with 16GB of RAM. Lately I've been thinking to add 2 more RAM sticks to make it 32GB of RAM and was wondering if it's worth it. Do you think it'll give me a noticeable performance boost? I play a lot of Assetto Corsa Competizione in VR. I've been able to find a good config and play quite comfortably but it'll be nice to be able to increase the resolution a bit further. Thanks for your input.
Oh wow, thank you so much as I got one of the codes. Will be setting that up tomorrow. I assume, at least I couldn't find, and restricting to recording the game play and sharing. 😍🤗😋
for the best vr mods are gt5, resident evil 7 and 8, Doom 3, Quake 3 arena, Alien isolation Mothervr and, Half life Alyx Levitation, Bioshock Mod too and finally Gunman Contracts chapter1. Thanks for your best mods in vr Beardo and for this giveway you make great quality contents as usual.
so true, at the moment i play alien isolation in vr and it is so scary
Playing Fallout New Vegas with VORPX has worked very well for me, one of the best VR experiences I've had
I just bought VR, I thought I needed to buy new games, but it turns out I already have a bunch of games, all I have to do is set them up and I can play, thanks for this information
Also enjoying Alien Isolation greatly, although I'm not sure that it'd take my #1 slot. #1 for me used to be hands down Doom3Quest, but Quake3Quest has to be a contender now. I would definitely have relevant wabbajack mods for Skyrim VR and fallout4 VR on my list ... why? because the mods add *SO MUCH* to vanilla, particularly in the case of Fallout 4 VR, which was apparently so poor a port that I basically went straight for modding without even trying the unmodded version, that they should be considered VR mods.
Perhaps worthy of a video on their own? Which wabbajack mod lists are best for a variety of games, particularly those two, and how to set up?
My best friend passed away in 2022 so the in memoriam section caught me off guard. She loved playing VR Games.
subnautica BZ is my favorite vr mod and vr game any time is play it i am still overwhelmed how immersive it is. i just hope the next subnautica game has vr on release.
Cheers for the left 4 dead 2 mention, gonna try it out
I Like Hyper Dash Till now,its free to Play.
But i am excited to see you r Playlist, looking for new Games everytime 😊
These are cool VR mods. Can't wait to try the Half Life mod.
Cheers chap!
Can't fault your list mate!
Very nice of you to point out the value of differing opinions. If we were all the same there is really nothing to share
Nice video. Great job creating this subject pcvr modders keep ehhh real VR alive and psvr2 i hope! Also a lot of Half Life Alyx mods are games of their own. Maybe a top 10 Half Life Alyx mods! Btw dr beef is a king. He has the best sidequest mods! He even worked on half life 2. These guys are very important for vr. More then facebook........?
what was the In Memoriam bit about ? i have a rift s and vorpx , can you explain thxs ?
Ok, I admittedly skip UA-cam videos that promote and sensationalize standalone VR. I believe it's currently a necessity for VR adoption but also single handedly destroyed most PCVR development. I've scrolled past a few of your videos before thinking they were Quest only content but you stopped me dead in my tracks with this one. Taking a look at some of your content diversity and my mistake of thinking you were just a Quest content provider had me instantly subscribe. I will be watching more of your stuff with anticipated thumbs. Kudos to your channel!
The best of my recent experience is a Return to Rapture. It is made on the engine of HL ALYX, but it brings you to the world of Bioshock. It is gorgeous. However, it has it is unique story which is a combination of ALYX and Bioshock, so maybe it is not right to list it in this video. Nevertheless, who did not tried, I recommend.
Alien isolation was going to be a native VR title. They pulled VR support 2 weeks before release
I respect that these tiers are based on your opinion, and how you felt about the experience, but I think the "Nearly perfect" and "feels nearly native" is a bit misleading when games that don't have full motion control (like Alien and Subnautica) are put in the god tier "feels nearly native" category, and games that have full motion control, and even a toolbelt (Deep Rock Galactic) aren't in that same category. Just feels really arbitrary, is all, and doesn't seem helpful for people determining what mods they should take the time to setup. I don't mean to be hyper critical
I had no idea there was Morrowind VR with motion control, wow!
Definitely nailed the Unbelievable tier! Also with you on most of the others too :)
Am I missing something? Subnautica's VR Support is not a MOD as far as I know. If you said Subnautica Below Zero then it would have made sense to me, but the footage was also from Subnautica. I know the enhancements MOD for the original VR mode but it's not really clear that's whats meant here.
