Nothing is more relaxing after tying a fly than rolling it around and watching the epoxy run around the head until it sets up. Over the years I noticed only one downside. With age some brands of epoxy will yellow, not the end of the world but it would be a blessing that after 3 or 4 years I could remember which flies were tied with what brand of epoxy so I could steer clear of the brands that yellow and only buy the brands that remain crystal clear.
I have been extremely lucky in the 70 years that I have been on this planet. I have been able to combine ,if you will, two of my favorite pastimes. Bird hunting and fly fishing / tying. I like to hunt pheasants, grouse-ruffed and sharptail, Hungarians and ducks. I have been able to harvest the birds and utilize their feathers to create flies that usually catch fish. When I was younger, I also trapped fox ,raccoon, muskrat and mink and was also able to use their fur. I also have been able to show these pastimes to my sons and several of their friends. Thanks for the great videos.
Gems of NJ... Who knew 😂... As a NJ guy that is so cool. (Usually NJ and fly fishing are not exactly synonymous) Thanks for sharing these pheasant skin flies.. super useful stuff and totally underrated. Been a helpful material as I "dive" into streamer fishing and tying
Thanks for posting a video with a smaller streamer. I'm a trout fisherman that mainly fishes with 4-weight kits, sometimes 5, and I could throw this (line taper and head-length permitting) with both.
"Everyone should struggle with five minute epoxy..." Been there, done that!! Keep up the good work, young man. I keep thinking I'll run into on one of those northern streams. Maybe someday.
Great informitive video as usual. Really enjoyed watching this one. I normally tye crappie jigs, but stretching out a bit and learning new techniques. I may see if I can get it down to 1-1/2"s and see what I can catch. Thank you for posting.
I like the trick about using the pad if paper for mixing epoxy. We used to have a system like that when I worked in an auto body shop. We would mix body filler (bondo) on a square pad of paper, and when we're done, throw the top sheet away.
I was looking for a tying video for our PHWFF advanced vet's class could used but the critical part was it needed to use inexpensive material. I didn't know you for a small fly (trout) guy and just decided to click on my subscription to see what you had that was new. To my surprise I saw this video. You have opened new doors for many tyers. Keep up the outstanding work you magnificent bastard! LOL Also, that new Ahrex PR378 hook IS awesome. Been tying a bunch of weedless pike patterns (yours) on it.
Tied a variation of this on a size 8 jig hook balanced got a fish first cast. would love to see a tutorial of you tying one like that with saddle for the tail but I can only hope. If your around the driftless region of minnesota I'll give you one I tied since you've inspired most of my time at the vise
I really like how you use the mono thread to your advantage to lash down the eyes. I have a whole drawer full of these flat adhesive eyes. The glue loses some of it’s adhesive properties over the years, and lashing them down never came to mind. I’m going to make some of these flies for catching Minnesota crappies. Also have lots of pheasant. Keep it up, glad to see working an under utilized natural material like pheasant.
There is one major drawback to 5 minute epoxy and that is that it will turn yellow and get cloudy as it ages. The slow setting epoxy does not have these aging problems. If you do get bubbles they can be drawn out with a quick touch of a flame of a BIC lighter or a match.
Thanks, Gunnar. This is a well thought out pattern that I'm sure will work in our smallie waters in NC and TN. Is the maribou from the pheasant skin, like on the back and top (bottom) of the skin?
Amazing video and really appreciate your approach. I learn rather then just duplicate a recipe. Quick question if I may. The way you treat the marabou would this be the same in all flies ie a Barely Legal? Thanks again for the tutorials and keep em coming.
You are a very talented young fly tier. Its awesome how you share your talents and i have learned a lot from your videos. Do you ever take a breath ? Anyways, i do really like your video's i just turn off the sound. Thanks for sharing your talents and amazing skills with us.
Really like the hackle attaching technique but I find it simpler to rotate the hackle feather 180 degrees and hold from behind the vice, that way you are not folding the hackle back over on itself and you are still on top of the hook shank.
Nice fly Gunnar. I have some chicken feathers I think I can use for that. The price was right. If Schultzy doesn't have any pheasant rump I'll be sending you an order.
The underside of pheasant rump is grayish color and lacks all the markings. My guess is he wants those colors on the outside, not on the inside, so he puts the curve to the inside.
@@florianbaumann8294 Understandable. I tie my deceiver tails curve out usually myself, but with a small fly like this, I'm guessing the water push factor isn't as important.
I've been following your work for a long time. I am curious how your flies will prove themselves in my Polish waters ... I look to you, but you must come to me and check it personally. invite...

I've watched this so many times, I should know it by heart. I love all the pheasant flys. Thanks for all the info.
Same 😂😂💪👍
Very intelligent person well done I like your tie style
Love that u show the fly in the tank! Great video!

Awesome, love the fly tank!
Really like your direction with this.

Clear mono over eyes... brilliant!!!
Dude, i love it i've had a hide for years just sitting around, now the time to use it.
Thanks Gunnar. I just tied one and I’m sure it will hold up and catch fish. Very informative step by step video.
Getting to see it swim is the icing on that cake! Thanks for adding this to the end.
VERY NICE!!
Great video..its cool when Kelly Gallop gives you a shout out on one of his videos.
Check out Josh Varner's channel.he also ties awesome streamers!

Great looking fly as always gunner, tight lines.

Thanks for taking time to develop and share smaller streamer patterns. This 2 to 3 inch size is where I think I need to be...
Man... that's exactly what I was looking for. Definitely will use it on the yellow and blue peacock bass here in Brazil. Many thanks
Is possible to make this using Gunieafowl feathers? I have plenti of it here 🙂
Of all the natiral materials going, pheasant is possibly the most versatile.
Nice work with the eyes and head -I like that.
Thanks
Pheasant is totally underrated. It's my favorite for tying soft hackles and simple streamers
Great video. I'm always looking for new ideas for baitfish flies...
Thank you!!!🎣🎣🎣🎣
Nice fly👍

Thank you Gunnar ,I enjoy watching you tye. However , I'M a UV guy. I've got my pheasant skin all ready to go .Thanks again. Canada says HI
Another great fly using ph8easant cape. I'm so glad I got some pheasant Love your flys man.
Very nice, I think I'm gonna sit down after work tonight and tie a few. I need to use up the rump on my pheasant skin anyway.
thank you, that was an amazing tutorial
Niiice one, quite easy but look really effective 😃👍💪
Awesome video, definitely going to give this a try! Cheers

Awesome fly and video. Do you ever tie in a weed guard?
Smashing video

Never mind...I just saw where it came from.

I'm new to tying , i enjoyed your seminar , can dumbbell eyes also be used or would it interfere with the feathers action.
Really like the hackle attaching technique but I find it simpler to rotate the hackle feather 180 degrees and hold from behind the vice, that way you are not folding the hackle back over on itself and you are still on top of the hook shank.
Kudos Gunnar nice Job , how do you like your HmH vise
I've had a dozen pheasant skins, for 40 some years, I think I just found a use or them. That's a good looking fly........
Nice fly Gunnar. I have some chicken feathers I think I can use for that. The price was right. If Schultzy doesn't have any pheasant rump I'll be sending you an order.
You make this difficult sucker look easy1
Hi Gunnar, you are tying in the tail feathers "curving in" I think the deceiver had them curving out. Any reason for that ? Regards Florian
The underside of pheasant rump is grayish color and lacks all the markings. My guess is he wants those colors on the outside, not on the inside, so he puts the curve to the inside.
Thanks, that makes sense, I was coming from the "water push" side of things,

How many flies does the kit allow for? Is it a single?
Gunner can this be made in the 5 - 6 inch range
are you selling them
Ruffed grouse would be another awesome skin to use this way.
So simple, awesome
Just be sure to use the right epoxy because some of them gets yellow when it hardens.
👍👍
What vice are y using?
You should try a shad with a silver pheasant, same style
Nice job
that the fly i need been trying to tie some thing like that right size good color thank thank
I like to tie flies that look like this with craft fur in a dubbing loop.
I have hmh I love it
Size 2 killed today on the river of souls

Winding a hackle on is not palmering!!
7 Minutes Bla, bla, bla........
Guess I'd better throw some baggies in the truck and go look for Mr. Roadkill Rooster. They're pretty common around here.
