  • Is faith without works dead as mentioned in James 2:14-23 or is it a gift of God and not the result of works as mentioned in Ephesians 2:8-9? Watch our latest video with Fr. Panayiotis, Ph.D. as he explains the Orthodox perspective on faith and works in relation to the Protestant and Catholic view.

As a Protestant looking into Orthodoxy, I fully agree with this. This is the best explanation on faith alone and works. Our Faith produces our good works, and our good works demonstrate our true faith. Faith and works are two sides of the same coin.

It’s been explained even further by orthodox tradition of saints: god works also improves faith through theosis. Nothing improves faith like the grace of God indwelling the soul, spirit & body.

I’m a Confessional Lutheran, but more and more I find myself agreeing with Orthodox theology. And since I went public with that, my Lutheran friends keep coming at me with “Sola Fide, Sola Scriptura, Monergism.” And I find myself more and more sure that those concepts were Luther’s innovations, heavily influenced by both Augustine, and “age of enlightenment” thinking. Please pray for me as I wrestle over my next step.

There is a big diffirence with the Gospel displayed for us in the Scriptures. At the end of the days Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox see good works as something which fills their bar of faith. The more works the bigger your faith which means you are safe/saved. In the end Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox in the core believe in justification through God's law. Galatians is the antidote of this thought. Because there will never be any flesh justified by the law before God.
      Galatians 2:16
knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

What I love about this explanation is how biblical it is, not exaggerating or taking certain passages out of context and not demonizing Luther but showing real humility. Amen! I am a Protestant by background, generally speaking. The bible, if it is indeed God's word, should be taken seriously: not added to, twisted, distorted or subtracted from. It is difficult to understand, sometimes, but that gives us no excuse to "force" our sense upon it. This is a beautiful explanation of one of the many paradoxes, or "ideological balances," the bible depicts. Sovereignty and free will; fully God and fully man; being born a second time; etc., etc. It is God's word. We should let him speak it as it is, and let him stretch and fill our feeble minds and hearts to know him deeply.

Paul's exhortation referring to "deeds of the law" was a warning to Jewish converts not to substitute the traditional man-made laws of Judaism for faith in Christ, it had nothing to do with the laws of God.
Jesus said we are required to keep the ten Commandments (Mark 10:19) in order to inherit eternal life, and that we must be fruitful (John 15:2) to be received by the Father, warning that fruitless branches will be "taken away."

@Luke Gomez I personally know dozens, if not hundreds (I'm an overseas missionary, and this is what we do all day every day, and most Protestants are aware of what this means) "....and then have no answer as to what works should be done through faith and love." Actually, most protestants are familiar of what works of love and faith are, and the principles governing all of them are clearly laid out in the Bible, by Christ himself, and aftewards the Apostles. The Great Commission itself qualifies, as does serving the poor, the orphans, Bible studies in jails and prisons.....and in the Western world, most of these are being done by Protestants. In fact, outside of the Western world, a large percentage of these are being done by Protestants. I live and see this on a daily basis, and not just where I'm from, but where I currently live, as well as other continents where I have worked and lived. Sorry, it is just as easy to find Orthodox who wouldn't know how to answer this (my landlords for the last 8 years - in 3 different apartments - fall perfectly in this category.....zero works nor any idea what to do) as it is to find Protestants who have no idea. This is coming from an Orthodox Bible teacher, and the average Orthodox Church member would have an answer that is no better.

Father is correct, there is no dichotomy, because both “faith” and “works” are gifts/emanations of God’s Grace evidenced in humanity.
“Faith”, trust”, “belief”, “the virtues”, “good works”; all extend and become operative solely due to Divine Grace.
Most talk of “faith” and imply a “work”; a positive quality and/or a volitional “doing” of the person.
For example: “I ACCEPT Jesus as my savior”, “I BELIEVE in one God...”, or” I TRUST in The Bible”.
But we are being subtly prideful and dishonest with ourselves.
Without Grace as the primary factor, no such “doing” is even possible.
Like the sun’s light, Love’s Divine Radiance; God’s Grace, nurtures all of Creation. Many flowers blossom; some we call “faith” others we call “works”.
    Thank you Father.

"Faith is a work of God in us, which changes us and brings us to birth anew from God (cf. John 1). It kills the old Adam, makes us completely different people in heart, mind, senses, and all our powers, and brings the Holy Spirit with it. What a living, creative, active powerful thing is faith! It is impossible that faith ever stop doing good. Faith doesn't ask whether good works are to be done, but, before it is asked, it has done them. It is always active. Whoever doesn't do such works is without faith; he gropes and searches about him for faith and good works but doesn't know what faith or good works are. Even so, he chatters on with a great many words about faith and good works." Martin Luther in his preface to the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans

Thank you so much for the great videos!!! They really bring awareness and understanding of our faith. Personally I got exposed suddenly to different denominations (since I came to live in North America) and although I have been Christian Orthodox almost my whole life, wasn't prepared for this challenge. I am so grateful because the new environment really woke me up and motivated me to do my own research about our faith!!! What a tremendous treasure we have!!! However, it still confuses me when many protestants say that they know the day and the time when they "have been saved," ( obviously a moment that they confessed their faith I guess) because they say, they felt the presence of the Holy Spirit - but yet at that moment they don't know what the fruits of their faith with be. However they believe they are saved no matter what will happen in their lives because as they say, can't lose their salvation. Please Father can you do a video about " once saved always saved?" Thank you again!!!🙏 Την ευχή σας 🙏

Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart. (Gal 6:7-9)
he tells us that it is those who keep the law who are justified (rom 2:13)

Very very good explanation. Faith and works must be together. However, I think the view you express that we do good works because we have faith is exactly the Lutheran (and maybe most Protestants) view.. Our works add NOTHING to our own salvation, but they are a visible sign of our Faith. My one issue with that is that in Matt 25 (Sheep and Goats) Jesus judges by works. If he didn't mean it, why did he say it? Also Paul says in 2 Cor 13 - that we have faith hope and love (better translated by the KJV as charity) and the greatest of these is not faith, but charity. So maybe our salvation is some mixture of faith and charity. But I liked your explanation - ultimately, the this controversy is a non-issue because, as you said, they really are two sides of the same coin.

It is, and always has been, about doing God's will. Righteousness is defined in the Old Testament as serving God. (Malachi 3:18). Matthew 25 is talking about service to others which is a form of serving God. It is God's will that we have faith, thus why faith is considered righteousness. And through faith in Jesus Christ, we transformed so that we can further serve God.

That's where we disagree and where the word of God triumphs ower the eastern orthodox and roman catholic dogma.
That's contrary to the Bible and the church fathers teachings.

I think "saved by faith" means that God forgives and gives new life for free, not because our works merit, earn or achieve it. We simply trust that God forgives. However, salvation includes being saved from sin, so can we be "saved" if we ignore how we hurt others. Works is what we are saved for.

Being an Anthropologist (cultural) I see Luther as a genius in adapting Paul into a critique of Medieval Catholicism..His commentary on Galatians and his preface on Romans is a polemic within his society context of the accumulated merit of the corruptions of Rome to raise money.
The best modern book on grace is John Barclays "Paul and thee gift" where the biblical theologian uses anthropological insights into the Paul's use of charisma (gift). It both critiques Luther and demonstrates how grace requires reciprocation.
Luther should not be seen as expounding Paul in a timeless manner.
I'd say Orthodoxy s view has also to be understood within it's cultural context in history also. There are no timeless ideas to debate about.
Luther adapted to his time and Orthodoxy adapted to the Eastern context. There is no conflict

Yes real faith in Jesus will save and that faith will lead to good works (fruits). Where I disagree is one can be on a his/her death bed and for the first time believe and have real faith in Jesus and be saved (and Orthodox priests indeed have done this when receiving confession of their sins). In such situations the dying person never had a chance to do good works yet is still saved. The main point though is correct, under normal circumstances faith without good works eventually if not immediately is very likely an indication of a dead faith. Only God knows for sure the state of each one of us.

faith without works is not faith because true faith means works but not 'my works'. "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." The Christ who lives as 'me' is the doer of the works through the body I call 'I', but not 'I- the person'. Only this way faith and works are one and the same, when separation between 'I' and God-Christ disappears. How could God-Christ preach to the hungry without providing for the needs of the body?! Only a person masquerading faith can do that. True faith is not a thing I posses but what I am- total surrender of the idea of 'me' with the understanding that there is no room in truth for both God and I; God is all there is.

If you believe that, then there is no sin, and as Luther puts it "Man is an ass, ridden by either God or the devil.".
So, it's not the non-existance of us, but submission to God. We do what God wants, not what we want.
If you reject free will, you reject virtue and sin. You fall into temptation, you must reject it, and Christ is there to help you, if you call upon Him. If not, you separate yourself from Him, not He from you.
When Abraham decided to obey God, it's not that God entered Him and brought him to the sacrificial altar, but Abraham himself. He submitted, and God found him righteous for his obedience.

Justification pertains to the discernable judgement of deeds or actions. Deeds or works are judged righteous or good if undertaken for the right reasons in order to produce a good, beneficial or right result pursuant to Divine predicate.
Faith is not belief, it is the guidance from God that informs Good works. If we willfully choose to act upon the guidance faith affords our actions are justified, because they are necessarily righteous, being informed by Divine predicate. If, on the other hand, we willfully choose to ignore or reject the guidance of faith, its as if we had never been gifted with the grace of god by which faith is conveyed, because faith without works is dead, unconsummated. A dead faith, cannot save. Faith is a free gift conveyed by God as a result of His goodwill, favor or Grace to those who seek it. It cannot be taught, purchased, earned, acquired through study,. It is given freely but it is not unmerited. The statement saved by grace through faith implies saved by works.

      Justification in
      Scripture
In my humble opinion the one passage in the Bible that proves that justification is by faith alone is 2 Tim. 1:8-10, but you may not agree so I will give you a number of other passages below that may suit you, but first my choice from the pen of the apostle Paul. “Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”
Now you may not agree. So make your selection from the
      following passages of scripture,
      Genesis 6:8, 15:6, Psalm 34:18, 51:1-5,106:31, Zechariah 3:4, Isaiah 53:5-12, Jeremiah 23:6, 33:16, 31:31-34, Habakkuk 2:4, John 3:16, 6:29, Acts 15:7-11, Romans 1:17, 3:20-28, 4:-4-25, 5:1,16, 8:28-38, 9:31-32, 10:1-4, 11:5-6, 1 Cor. 1:30, 2 Cor. 5:17-21, Galatians 2:16, 2:21, 3:3-11, 4:1-5, Ephesians 2:8-9, Phil.3:1-9, Col. 3:3-4, 1 Thess. 4:14, 2 Thess. 2:13-14, 1Tim. 1:12-16, Titus 2:14, 3:5-7, Hebrews 1:3, 9:28, 10:38, James 2:23, 1 Peter 1:5-11, 2:24-25, 1 John 2:2, 5:5, Revelation 12:11.

The publican in the temple did not have any works to present to the Lord, neither did the thief on the cross. They had both led a terrible life, and all that they could offer was their repentance and (probably rather weak) faith and their sin. Yet they were pardoned, justified and made holy. That is the way it continuously happens, and the works come afterwards. And I think that they are works that are not even consciously done, but expressions of the indwelling Holy Spirit. And any works that are consciously done ”for the love of God” can actually be sinful. When I think the last judgement, it appears that the blessed are genuinely surprised: ”When did we see you hubgry, thirsty, sick, in prison, etc…” They cannot recall having done anything special or meritorious. Many of the damned might have a list of their wonderful works they did ”for the love of God”.

Thief on the cross held a short sermon to the other thief prior to being pardoned by the Lord. That sermon serves to us as a obvious show off of his faith. Very well said Father. But I would like to make note of something which has always confused me. God declared Abraham to be righteous in Genesis 15 by believing God. While the incident with Isaac didn't take place till Genesis 22. So the "works" followed after Abraham was declared righteous by his faith. James 2 states that Abraham was declared righteousness when he offered up Isaac. But that isn't true. Abraham was declared righteous when he simply believed God back in chapter 15. He was declared righteous before any works were produced not after. Am I missing something here? God's righteousness is mentioned in Romans 3 and 5 as something that is freely given as a gift. So in light of James, am I righteous or not? Or is the free gift really conditional? Not trying to argue against good works. Just trying to understand these passages better. Thanks!

It was faith and obedience by which he left his land and people, to go seek after the promise. Not the promise of the multitude of his offspring, but the promise of the land. It is over this land the descendants Jacob, Esau, and Ishmael fight and contend over to this very day. But it was by faith, and obedience Abram left Chaldea and went to see this land. This was a work of faith.

  • @theTavis01
    @theTavis01 2 роки тому +1

part of the confusion comes from 'works' referring to two different types of work. When James says that "faith without works is dead," he is referring to good deeds as work. When Paul says that "a person is not justified by the works of the law" he is referring to ceremonial hoop jumping, like getting a circumcision. While Protestants have definitely taken things so far that some of them will reject good deeds, this Orthodox is avoiding the main criticism that Protestants have - namely that the Eucharist and sacraments have become a type of work in the way that Paul used it. Orthodox claim that anyone who does not share their specific Eucharist is not a member of the body of Christ, and is therefor bound to hell REGARDLESS of their good deeds and REGARDLESS of their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
