Repentance is the tearing down of the wall that separates us from God. It is like the removal of a force-field which prevents us from entering His Kingdom. It begins with the recognition of our own fallen nature and continues as we reconnect with our Creator. Each year during Great Lent, the church holds before us an enduring example of repentance and a reflection of the radical change that can occur in a human being with the life of St. Mary of Egypt.

We do pray to our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ - to God His Father, and to the Most Holy Spirit - the entire Trinity.
Lord Jesus tells us, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you...” (Matthew 5:44)
The Holy Apostles James writes to us, “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (James 5:16)
The Lord Himself, and His Divinely-inspired disciple commands us to pray for each other - even if they are enemies that despise us. So if we can pray for enemies, why can’t we pray for those who ask us?
James tells us that the act of asking other to pray to God for us, and praying for each other, not just for ourselves, gives us healing. The importance of this is repeated throughout the Holy Scriptures.
So really there is no reason to be opposed to asking other to pray to God for us. But why ask saints or the Mother of God, you might ask?
Well, Holy Apostle of Christ James also tells us, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Clearly the prayers of those who are close to God are more powerful than the prayers of us, the very sinful people.
The saints are not dead. They are alive in Christ, Him having made His sacrifice so that we many live. They are with God right now, in full communion with Him.
They are the cloud of Witnesses (Hebrews 12:1). They have worked miracles - just like Elijah in the desert. And since they pray ceaselessly (1 Thessalonians 5:17), we ask them to pray for us.
This is why we ask saints to pray for us.

Have you ever prayed for (on behalf of another? Why? In the same way, the dead in Christ are in God's presence and can pray on your/my behalf TO GOD. This is why we ask for intercession.... please pray for me, a sinner.🙂

Sometimes we fall in despair, thinking that our sins are to big for God to forgive us. That we have walked in wicked ways for to long, and that we are never able to restore our relationship with God again. For me personally St. Mary of Egypt shows me how merciful God is. Something a man cannot understand easily. Yes we read it in the Bible, but sometimes we fall so deep that it looks like we will never get out of darkness anymore. Thank God i found out about those Saints. Their stories are grace-filled. May the Lord protect you all in these wicked times!

I still feel very guilty for an act of apostasy...I was raised Jewish but became a traditional Catholic when I was younger. When my beloved father died, I went back to Orthodox Judaism as a way of trying to keep my dad "alive" in my life...but Christ showed me Jesus in the ancient Jewish texts I studied....the Tanakh as well as the Zohar and other writings. Once God has set His sights upon you, He does not let go. I feel so ashamed for my years of apostasy, yet I returned to Christ with such a deep faith in Him that I didn't have before.
I have mental illness and struggle with despair a lot. I have repented. Please pray for me. Mark
It sometimes seems as if these situations of deep despair and suffering are created on purpose so that we will search for him. I also read something wonderful recently which said that if you have been sitting in a dark room for a long time, and suddenly go outside in bright sunlight, you can’t take the sunlight and shut your eyes. And that this is exactly what’s happening when God’s grace shines on us. We may experience it as an inner darkness because, ironically, we are unable to bear the brightness of that light … we are not used to it. And maybe this is what the purpose of spiritual penances and prayers is … to enable us to take in more and more of that light.
I was a wrech like saint Mary of Egypt. So given to passions and lust, but the Lord Jesus had mercy on me. Only he can change sinners to saints. Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me a sinner and have mercy on us all in the day of judgment. Amen.
I relate to Mary’s story a lot. The world chewed me up and spat me out, I have nowhere else to go but to God.

I know how you feel. There are some people whom God has chosen for Himself, that the only love they feel is God’s love, and the world, their interactions with other people, is a sharpening block for the steel of their soul, and that constant grinding is unpleasant, it is a cross. But that same God repurposes our steeled souls for good. A sword can take a life or save it.

Me too! I feel so tormented by it and have been for many years. But I never give up my faith in God and pray for forgiveness and mercy. I chastise myself for my lack of willpower, and yet, I remember that this is how God made me. It is hard to understand why. Constant prayer and rememberance is the only way. One must never think that one is too sinful and is beyond saving. That is the only silver lining in this cloud. Best of luck to you in your journey.

GOD knows how hard it is to kick an addiction. I'm Roman Catholic and pray to her constantly, especially on her April 2nd feast day on our liturgical calendar, that she cure me of my addictions. St. Mary of Egypt pray for us!

10 years ago an addict lived in me, he died that day hung like Christ on the Tree. I repent still. You are in my prayers Brother.
I've only been an inquirer for about a year. Grew up with an addiction from the age of 7. I've spent thousands on therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, workshops, and 12 step recovery. I've never been able to kick this addiction until I came to orthodoxy. Its been a long time since I've relapsed. It is still a temptation but barely like it was. I had no choice but to do it before. I'm in the true hospital for the sick, and I'm taking the medicine prescribed. Glory to GOD in the highest, peace and good will toward men. 🎉🎉🎉🎉 God bless you brother.

Guilt and shame are completely different than accepting the reality of our own history and failures. Redemption doesn't free us from reality. Salvation doesn't release us into some kind of mystical otherness where we can pretend our struggles are over. Unhealthy guilt and shame keeps us away from Christ. Healthy guilt and shame that is rooted in repentance, retrospective living, and awareness of our sin leads us continually to Christ and His Church with all It's grace. Acceptance of reality has only one contrast... prideful arrogance. Repentance with humility is the path to salvation.
@@paisiosjones1300 Agreed. Redemption frees us from our sins - the Christian life should be one of constant repentance but also one of constant redemption. Guilt and shame are, like sin, realities that we deal with and are freed from day by day by surrendering to God and His love for us.
We should always remember the joy set before us, and the light that makes sense of the darkness and is not defeated by it.

Strangely I felt so heavy and empty today, I am feeling relief through this video. I am not sure why. I have thought of her once in a while I had briefly heard her story in the desert before. Maybe i should pay more attention. This video is giving me some relief from physical and mental exhaustion

I like how we say “human transformation through repentance”, as if they were two different things, when “repentance” (metanoia - the transformation of the individual’s consciousness into the likeness of God via the enlightening of their nous) in itself is the transformation of the human.

St Mary of Egypt - what a moving story! St Mary was blocked going into the church. That reminds Jesus’ parable. Two men praying at the Temple. The priest praying “ Lord I’m not like this sinner-man.....” However, the man bowed his head and prayed “ Lord I’m indeed a sinner” he was in repentance. We all are sinners and fallen short of the glory of God.
Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me a sinner. This story hits me very hard.

Pray rosaries for the one that harmed you. Tell Jesus I love the person who harmed me they not know what they do I forgive them. It's hard I know even if you have Hate at first it will change do it for 6 months. Just keep them in prayers.

Today I discovered Saint Mary of Egypt, and turns out, today April 1st, we celebrate her! What a day to discover her!
Saint Mary's story is similar to mine. I began my lustful life after being sexually abused when I was 6. It's very hard to leave that life in the past, but she gives me hope. She was so broken, her soul was broken into a million pieces, and the Holy Theotokos, through Mary's repentance, put those pieces back together and transformed her. I never thought there was a Saint that went through what I went through. So eye opening, Thank you Jesus❤🩹.

I first read the story of Saint Mary of Egypt about 10 years ago, and I was immediately struck at the conversion because it reminded me of the importance and the blessing that stems from turning away from anything that is not of God.I am a man who desires to draw closer to God and others and it is a struggle for me. So hearing the story again encourages me to never give with striving to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. God bless you!

I realised the intercessions of the Theotokos in my life in 2023 and then I realised the intercession of St Mary of Egypt on Holy Wednesday in 2024 and attended the Greek orthodox Church in my town for the first time on Holy Friday 2024.
