  • In 2001 when I first started lecturing about Intense Pulse Light, IPL, for Dry Eye Disease it was met with skepticism by doctors and by IPL technology companies. I remember one company that was based near my alma mater, Stanford University, flatly stated that we are an aesthetics company not an eye company. The only way that I had a company invest the time and money to improve the technology for Dry Eye was treating the President of that company, Roger Parkin, who had dry eye. Once he experienced the benefits of the treatment he knew his company should be in the space. The technology has advanced and so has the doctor’s thinking. Lumenis has created an evolved IPL technology that is perfect for DED treatment. I have covered the major advancements like the cooling tip, consistent pulse energy, control of parameters to best treat the lid margins, and the most important is the knowledge that the energy that you program is the energy delivered. Well now every company that has an IPL system is stating that their IPL system treats dry eye. I have investigated these systems and can tell you that they are first generation IPL systems more like what I used in 2001. Can you make this system work for a few people some of the time? The answer is yes. But as surgeons and patients would we be happy with a treatment that had below a 25% success rate. The answer is No.
When I was lecturing at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists I saw one of these IPL systems. I had to chuckle until I saw that they had it combined with other technology that I have researched and patented. I think companies have learned their lesson and are listening to my research but I think they are taking the easy way out by just taking a snippet of my research and vomiting up a treatment. We have been working on Low Level Light Treatments for at home use by incorporating LED technology. We spent 7 years researching the system and found a technology that worked which we patented. Imagine my surprise when I see an LED mask for Dry Eye coupled with an IPL system. But like in the IPL scenario they used first generation technology (the wrong tech but I’m not here to give away secrets) that doesn’t work. One problem that I have is they are infringing on my patent. (legal is on it). But the bigger problem is that the technology they are putting out there will not work and gives the treatment a bad name. Just like poor IPL technology gives that treatment a bad name. Another trend is new doctors to IPL for Dry Eye inventing protocols without completing the research to test the effectiveness of their protocol. We have invested 17 years of time and research to perfect the protocol. We have treated thousands of patients with various skin types and nationalities and presented and published our work to insure outcomes without complications. I have had the honor of training doctors throughout the world. I am excited to see these doctors have replicated the results with the Optima technology and our protocols. So I say to doctors and patients is buyer beware. Do your research. Find the doctors that are utilizing the best technologies and the tested protocols. Not all IPL and The Q systems are the same.
