While I find it better narratively for Paul to die (it gives JC an even more personal stake against MJ12), this scene is so much better with Paul than Gary. His delivery is just much more enthusiastic and emotive. The bit at the end about the kill switch is also nice. "Yes, I'm going to make it - and you will, too." Such a nice thing to hear from your brother after such a heavy string of missions.

So in my first playthrough of the game, it was Gary Savage who talked to me in this scene. Shortly after it, I was stuck so I looked up a gameplay video on youtube and I got to this scene so I just let it play since I was stuck shortly afterwards. Imagine my surprise when I saw it was Paul and not Gary. I mean I knew the game does give you choices and changes accordingly, but I took Paul's death as a fixed event. Then I was like "Wait what? You could save him?!"
I was kinda surprised too. My first playthrough I followed his advice and jumped out the window at his apartment and got that call. The next playthrough I vowed to prevent him from dieing in the hotel and we left through the front door. Then he was alive in the medical lab below UNATCO, saw him again at Tracer Tong's compound, and got this call. It kinda brought a tear to my eye knowing what happens otherwise and seeing Paul recovering.
Same for me. On the next play through -- as a sort of joke -- I put tear-gas mines in the lobby of the hotel, and then head-shot all the coughing, incapacitated troops. Later I got to this part and Paul Denton was still alive. I was surprised and pleased.
I was 11 when I never accepted Paul's death, saw it as a complete failure and redid it till he wasn't gunned down in front of me. Haha Deus ex is an awesome game! Had it been set in stone that would of been bleak!

Was looking to see if anyone else had made this deduction.
