  • Talk by Dr Sukhmani Khorana (UNSW): “The algorithm is multicultural, but not intersectional” as part of a Symposium on Multicultural Algorithms held at the University of Sydney on Friday 20 September 2024.
In this talk, Sukhmani Khorana uses personal and contemporary political examples to illustrate how algorithmic misinformation on social media platforms may be recognising race/ethnicity, but not a nuanced and intersectional formation of identity. In other words, they enact multicultural logics of ‘representation’ where an individual is often reduced to their ethnicity (or big data’s interpretation of it), rather than combining it with other social identity traits, or considering culture itself as in flux. Khorana finally focuses on mis- and disinformation about race and how it is being addressed by young people of colour through co-constructing their own agentic, intersectional, and narrative-based algorithmic spaces.
