not every place has some kind of adoption center for dogs especially other countries and back then in the 90's there's no internet even there was, the technology itself early stage of development no social media to expect mostly simple chat rooms and sending emails, you cannot advertise the dogs 'cause many old people on those days do not know how to use internet only young kids back then

Unfortunately Bobi being the oldest dog is fake. The pictures of Bobi across the years are clearly different dogs, they have different markings (and no it's not just an "going grey in their old age" thing). They just named different dogs the same name and swapped them out at the vet.

Most of the time animals' short lifespans are due to being fed the wrong things and not cared for. My parents had 5 tabbies and every single one lived over the age of 20. All the vets didn't know how to check out an old cat, because they all died young. The last cat was Hencake, who weighed 40 lbs when we adopted him. We got him down to 18 lbs 16 years later. He crossed the rainbow bridge 2017.
Not always. Unfortunately a lot of dogs are prone to disease. My old dog had all the love and care in the world!!!! But cancer took her at 11.

@@Histerhullin places like Portugal specifically the more rural areas they tend to have lots of street dogs already so rehoming can be near impossible to very difficult. Especially because as mentioned the family was already struggling. Obviously they knew the only other option was starvation so in their eyes the humane thing to do would be put them down. Its sad but happens a lot in cases where people simply just cant afford that kind of health care. Especially if you think back to this being more than 30 years ago now, even some of the basic resources they may struggle to get now wouldve been impossible to get back then
I rescued a dog, her name was honey, back when I was younger. I lived with my parents but they wanted a different dog but I chose her because they literally said she'll be put down soon if no one picks her. I obviously felt for her and she lived for 21 years and we got her around 1-2.
We always joked that she's just "milking" more time out of us, sleeping on the couch and eating scraps. She moved out with me and was like a sister she was around so long.
Sad day putting her down as she couldn't keep food down and was loosing lots of weight. She had to take a double dose of the injection because she didn't want to go.

My dog has outlived all his litter mates AND he's a cancer survivor. He's on his last legs though. I keep waiting for him to go in his sleep. He still has an appetite and a good quality of life even though he's now blind and mostly deaf. There's NOTHING wrong with his nose though. ❤

Love really does wonders! My daughters dog who was a mix of beagle and basset hound was 9when she got him at her age 7. He had to be put down when she was 23yo and he was 25yo. His kidneys weren’t working and he couldn’t even walk anymore. She held him the whole time then had him buried at my parents and she stops to talk to him with her new dog(she is now 27yo). I found some of the first pics we had of him and her from that summer she got him. She framed them and put them on her wall. I miss him. His name was officially Mr. Big Foot due to his insanely large paws. But his long floppy ears were the softest I’d ever felt and he never barked, it was unreal, but we had him for over 9 yrs before anyone heard him bark!

People on the countryside do this all the time. Its sad but a necessity, people abandon dogs all the time and they end up in farms when they are given food, a lot of time the people don't have the resources or the time to take care of the dogs that they didnt even brought so taking them down is the most humane option before it gets out of hand. Refugees and rescue shelters put down animals all the time, there is just not enough resources.Even Peta has to do it.

it's honestly disgusting they put helpless puppies down. why not just bring them to a shelter or give them away to neighbors, friends or family? i know obviously social media wasnt around then, but they DID have phones and couldve made calls, or surely a car/truck where they couldve drove into town and dropped them off at a shelter or something. i'm glad one of the puppies snuck away and the son was kind enough to raise it in secret. i hope the owner and Bobi bounced as soon as the kid was old enough because that sounds like a toxic household 😠
