I finished doing my first tapestry design for a sweater with regular sc and I wish I would’ve known this beforehand. Thank you!! I’ll definitely be using this for my next tapestry project
Thank you so much for this! I have re-started a tapestry crochet afghan too many times to count because of so many reasons, one being the lines were just never straight enough for me and another reason was because, no matter what technique I used, carrying yarn on top, behind, etc, my carrying yarn was almost always visible. With this "yarn under" technique, the stitches are so much tighter so the carrying yarn doesnt show through!!!
This is so very cool! I never heard of this technique, but have seen many things made that were apparently tapestry crochet. Thanks so much for taking the time to teach this wonderful technique. I'll head on over to your FB page and check out your website once I'm done with all of your tutorials! You CAN teach an old dog new tricks! LOL!!
I'm excited for you! I did regular crocheting before I learned about tapestry crochet, and I was kinda restless in the sense that I was always wanting to learn and use a new stitch. I think tapestry fulfilled that desire I had to never have to do the same thing twice. I haven't gone back to regular crocheting since! Please keep in touch and share your projects with me! I love seeing what everyone is up to in the tapestry crochet world :)
Thank you I kept having the slanting problem. Also Iv been crochet since I was 13 and I never bother to learn what that stitch is called. I learnt something new. Keep up the videos I'm in love with tapestry.
I am doing a blanket using the tapestry crochet method. At the end of my row, I have to turn my work, so would I just continue to crochet in the back loop? Or would I do that on the RS of the pattern only?
Thank you so much for your video. I have been trying to make a tapestry bag using the normal single crochet and tru enough, the stitches goes diagonal. Your video helped me a lot so thank you 🥰
After I do 3 rows the stitches start looking crazy not uniform or as it should. Could you do a tutorial for several rows so that we could see all steps with color changes
Tapestry crochet is surprisingly easy to learn. Once you have a few basic skills down, you're pretty much ready to go! You won't be a baby on tapestry crochet for long :)
I don't understand how pulling the yarn through with the yarn the other way around the hook can possibly make a difference. Surely, once the yarn is released, it's exactly the same? Can you explain what this step actually does please?
You can't. You would have to learn to crochet in reverse. Which once you learn it you will be glad you did. Or you can chain said 10 then add back at the beginning of the work if you're not making it in the round or cut yarn at the end like they fo in mosaic crochet. I hope I made sense
@StephRenee812 I was about to ask the same question. I just learned to crochet in reverse. I'm stacking skills on this project and every tidbit has been so helpful so thank you for answering their question.
Amazing! I work with two colors and I can't hide one inside the other. Little dots of color keep showing. What should I do to completely hide the colors inside the other?
Hi I’ve just got one question! When you get to the end of the row, and you turn the work - is the ‘back loop’ whichever is furthest way from YOU or just the front of the work? (E.g. one row I work into the back loop which is the loop furthest from me, I finish the row, turn my work, am I then working into the loop furthest from me still, or the loop closest to me because I turned the work around?) hope this makes sense! It’s hard to explain which out showing it 😅 x
I know that this comment was from a couple of weeks ago, but just in case someone else had the same question: in this case you would use the back loop when you're on the front side of your work, but when you turned you'd be doing the front loop. Usually if a pattern says back loop only then when you turn your work you would continue to work only in the back, furthest loop. When it comes to tapestry crochet though, if you're on the face of the work you're stitching in the back loop, if you're on the backside you're working in the front loop that's closest to you. It would be the front loop to you, but it's the back loop of the project.
Hi Donald! You can still make a diagonal line with a MSC, but it would have to be done a little differently. With the MSC, you can have straight horizontal, diagonal lines and vertical lines in the same pattern. With the SC, you can only do straight horizontal and diagonal lines. Diagonal lines done with the MSC kinda resemble stairs, whereas with the SC it's just a basic diagonal line.
do you have any patterns sample you can practice on like making a mini backpack keychain with a little design in it your video is great i know how to crochet etc and how to carry the yarn but would like to take like your pattern ya are doing but make it swmaller etc so glad your video is great and ya have so many of them i just discover like 111 of them on this topic which is great and do lefthanders do the sme for the pattern do you have any like with an initial omn it as no one ever shows a letter or left handed also thaks
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I watched some vids from Latin America. It looks like they first yarn under and second yarn over. Is this possible? I'll try to find out what difference it makes.
Absolutely give it a try! It may even work better for you than this method. I have a theory that every factor about the way a person crochets (tension, how they hold the hook, the angle at which they crochet) affects the way a stitch turns out. So it's very possible that yarn under then yarn over could work better for you. Let me know how it goes!
Omnia omnia For the first part of the stitch, the hook goes under the yarn, then hooks it and pulls it back. The yarn loops over the hook from back to front. For the second part, it's reversed. Once the yarn is pulled back through, it goes over the hook from front to back.
If you want you can cut yarn at end of each row Or do what I do. I just chain 10 or more depending on what you want and then fold rhe work and then start back at beginning. Oryou can learn to reverse crochet. If you are rigjrhanded it's just going in thru the back of the work and flick kf the wrist. You might fond a video or 2 somewhere. To see it being worked.
Ok, it's hard for me to figure out the "yarn over" and "yarn under", the only thing I can figure out is that the yarn over, the yarn is actually beneath the hook, and yarn under, the hook is turned down and the yarn is beneath the hook. Right? Then you pull through, aren't you technically doing the same thing? "pulling through"? Also, I find the "yarn under" awkward. I'll just have to try it and see. I'll come back!
The best way to do diagonal lines with the MSC is to make them three stitches wide, with 2 of the 3 stitches overlapping on each round. If you look at what I was working on, you can create diagonal lines 1 stitch wide but it doesn't really connect well on diagonals that go down from left to right. Diagonal lines 2 stitches wide still aren't very smooth looking. 3 stitches will give you the smoothest look without the lines being too thick.
Thank you. It would seem the msc stitch works best with vertical and horizontal lines. However, the standard sc will work better on diagonals. I plan to have some outlines which run on a diagonal line, and I think a 3-stitch wide outline may not be what I'm looking for this time. This is good to know as I plan out other patterns, though. Thanks again. Great videos, too.
Hi, I love your work, One question, how many strands of yarn can you carry with your work? I want to do one from a picture and I will have 9 colours. thanks. Sharon .
You're welcome, Cindy! Some patterns use a regular single crochet stitch and some use this stitch. It just depends on how the pattern is written. If anything else pops up that you're unsure about, feel free to ask me and hopefully I'd be able to help you out :)
lol that seam in the background is gonna give me nightmares, what happened there? are you working in the round without a slip stitch, that does not usually work great for color work imo, using a better method with a slip stitch will make it line up better especially at the seam, it's a beautiful piece but imo that seam ruins it even if it's hidden later or not seen while the piece is being worn, I like that piece that's actually why I initially clicked on the video to check it out since I already know this method for lining stuff up vertically, but that seam is rough, just a protip lol, also in the video you call this tapestry crochet but this is actually more like a faire isle method, tapestry crochet isn't faire isle, it's a completely different form often also called mosaic crochet, but it looks beautiful and its a fun method I like all different types of methods, and that piece is definitely cool definitely a lot of potential, just the seam is the only huge issue, anyway have a good day, happy crocheting
Amber Gray It's different from single crochet through the back loop. On the second half of the stitch, you "yarn under" instead of the usual "yarn over." Because of this, the stitches stack directly over each other. In standard crochet, with only yarn overs, the stitches in each round are slightly to the right of the stitches in the previous round.
I just finished my last tapestry project using this method and so far this is my favorite. Thank you so much for this ❤
god bless you
it's been a year since i'm trying to understand why my work keeps shifting to the right.
you're amazing
I finished doing my first tapestry design for a sweater with regular sc and I wish I would’ve known this beforehand. Thank you!! I’ll definitely be using this for my next tapestry project
Thank you!, your video will still be appreciated through out the years!
Thank you for a right-to-the-point video and clear explanation of the stitch!
Thank you so much for this! Bruh. You are an angel. I finally understand it!!!!
OMG Finally I found someone who could help me to do a straight line for changing colors. Thank you so much, I'm subscribing to you channel. :)
This is so very cool! I never heard of this technique, but have seen many things made that were apparently tapestry crochet. Thanks so much for taking the time to teach this wonderful technique. Neeci Torres excellent! thank you so much for this very handy tutorial. It is often the little things that make a big difference 😊
I am doing a blanket using the tapestry crochet method. At the end of my row, I have to turn my work, so would I just continue to crochet in the back loop? Or would I do that on the RS of the pattern only?
That's probably exactly the stitch I needed, thanks! Wow.
Thanks so much! I was creating a basket using the tapestry technique but wasn't getting straight. Your tutorial helped me a lot! Thanks! x
Great video and great information! Just one question; what does the back of the blanket look like? Does is look the same as the front?
Thank you so much for your video. I have been trying to make a tapestry bag using the normal single crochet and tru enough, the stitches goes diagonal. Your video helped me a lot so thank you 🥰
Assalamualaikum and allah reward you because I have been looking for a good and understandable video.
Thank you so much for this!!!! I've tried learning tapestry crochet a few times over the years, and it's never quite made sense till now.
looks so much better !! great tutorial
After I do 3 rows the stitches start looking crazy not uniform or as it should. Could you do a tutorial for several rows so that we could see all steps with color changes
Thank you thank you for this video. Exactly the info I needed. and so well explained
Thank you for this video! It was very clear and to the point. It also cleared up why my stitches weren't coming out quite right! Thanks again!
I love this stitch. Thank you for sharing.
Maravilhoso! Muito bem gravado e explicado! Dá para aprender mesmo sem entender o idioma!🇧🇷
i was just doing back loop sc, now i am gonna try this. thank you! i am not new to crohet but i am a baby on tapestry crochet :D
Tapestry crochet is surprisingly easy to learn. Once you have a few basic skills down, you're pretty much ready to go! You won't be a baby on tapestry crochet for long :)
Could you please show me how to change to the next colour because when I do it it looks very untidy thank you very much much appreciated
thanks I will try this, have lots of trouble keeping pattern correct with normal sc
helpful and clear thank you very much , I want you to make a vedio about the oval base for tapestry bags if you please.
That's a great idea, Amal! I'd add it to my to-do list :) Thank you for the suggestion!
Also late xolor changes help too. So it helps keep it more unifirm
Thank you this is a great tutorial. What is the pattern to that afghan or blanket that you are making .
I don't understand how pulling the yarn through with the yarn the other way around the hook can possibly make a difference. Surely, once the yarn is released, it's exactly the same? Can you explain what this step actually does please?
OMG I THINK YOU MAY HAVE JUST SAVED MY GRAPHGAN 😮
Thank you for the succinct video!
Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial! I have 1 question about the backside, do we follow the same back-loop-only technique?
Did you figure it out?
@@leenaaboidris7692 hey, i did the back loop technique only. It ends up looking like crinkle cut chips (lol), but still a better a tapestry look :)
How do you do the return stitch
You can't. You would have to learn to crochet in reverse. Which once you learn it you will be glad you did. Or you can chain said 10 then add back at the beginning of the work if you're not making it in the round or cut yarn at the end like they fo in mosaic crochet. I hope I made sense

Great explanation. Thanks so much. Is this the stitch used to make Mochila bags?
God bless you 💗
What about double crochet stitch is there any tricks for that?
would you have to go through the front loop on the wrong side if doing flat?
What determines if you should do a SC, MSC, back loop only or both loops if you have a pattern with no written instructions?
Thank you very much for this wonderful&important tip💕
Will this stitch have much stretch or be stiff? Ty
Amazing!
I work with two colors and I can't hide one inside the other. Little dots of color keep showing. What should I do to completely hide the colors inside the other?
Thank you! I appreciate it a lot :) Beautiful work you've got there and great explanation :)
Thank you for this instruction.
Helpful and clear demonstration 😀 thank you.
You're very welcome Margaret! I'm glad you found it to be helpful :)
I'd like to see the back also. I plan on making a photogan so I'm interested in what the reverse looks like
Qué bueno, queda el punto perfecto para el jacquard. Gracias
that's really useful! thanks so much for sharing!
I'm glad you found it to be useful! You're welcome, Blanka!

I think it looks cool 😊 thanks for the info bro
do you have or sell this pattern or chart thanks
Can I use this method for crocheting Polka Dots? (without turning)
thank you >>>>> i dont understand what is the difference between yarn under and yarn over ?
Omnia omnia For the first part of the stitch, the hook goes under the yarn, then hooks it and pulls it back. The yarn loops over the hook from back to front. For the second part, it's reversed. Once the yarn is pulled back through, it goes over the hook from front to back.
Dea Carey thank you
I love crochet very much. Please let me know what number of the crochet and the thread you used in this tutorial. Plz❤️
I believe the hook was 3.75 mm and the yarn was size 4 :)
Does it still stay lined up if you use both loops but still yarn under?
If you ever have to turn your work, would you do the stitch the exact same way or different?
If you want you can cut yarn at end of each row

Can you mix sc & modified
Would the same thing happen if you went in the FLO instead of the BLO???
Great tutorial ! Thanks
You're very welcome, Mary! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Is there no double crochet variation of this?
Thank you so much!🌺🌸🌺🌸🌺🌸
can this be worked flat?
Perfect! thank you!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ thank you
How to do graphgans, sc, c2c,
Wow. Mind blown!
Why does the bottom look like it has a seam
Este vídeo lo se puede traducir en España??
can you use that stitch in crochet photo ?

Thank you.i did not know this msc.
Thank You for this
Thank you for replying back to me ❤️😊
Thank you!!!
Your carried yarn doesn't show at all... That's incredible!!
How does this stitch work for motifs with diagonal lines such as builder's blocks or baby blocks?
The best way to do diagonal lines with the MSC is to make them three stitches wide, with 2 of the 3 stitches overlapping on each round. Where you see rough seam here? Explain
Encima não precisa falar tanto criatura
This not a 'modified' sc. It is standard crochet, thru back loop. BL. Just saying
I just lost ten years of my life🤦🏼♀️
Thank you!! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for
i would love to have the pattern for this please
