Thanks for your comment, Hana. In order to perfect your rolling technique I recommend you start flat on your back, try to make yourself as round as possible, and start with a back-and-forth rocking motion. Once you're comfortable with that it won't be much of a stretch to go for the full roll. Practice well :) - Patrick
Effective Martial Arts I still seem to keep rolling on my side for some reason. I think I flatten out through the middle. Any tips for a hopeless roller?
Indeed some people have trouble rounding their back. For whatever reason some region of the back stays flat. If that is the case, a modified side roll can be a valid alternative to practice and can be applied in many situations. Then flexibility exercises for the back, and strengthening of the abs would be the way to go. Good luck :)
Thanks for the question, Melvin! If you don't have any underlying condition, you're probably doing it wrong. The most common mistake for beginners is to have the back not round enough, so there is impact on the back when you roll... this is usually caused by the lack of contraction in the ab region. Check out this more recent video on exactly how to correct this, step by step! "Rock" before you Roll! ua-cam.com/video/z7EOaT8dcx8/v-deo.html Enjoy! 👊 - Patrick
Pretty much. Biomechanics are the same, regardless of the context. Check out this more recent, more complete video on “How to Rock and Roll”: ua-cam.com/video/z7EOaT8dcx8/v-deo.html Enjoy, and please let us know your thoughts! 🙏 - Patrick
Realistically, when would it be appropriate to apply this? Is it just fancy stuff or is it really practical? Not trying to be incisive I just really want know practically.
Good question, MysteryMan159. Indeed, rolling is an essential basic movement for ground fighting. Example, if someone pushes you from behind, instead of falling flat, you can roll forward to conserve your kinetic energy and come back to your feet faster. Also, and more importantly, when you find yourself on your back, you pretty much have to always keep a round back to be able to rock and spin to redirect your opponent's weight and generate attack as well as evasive opportunities. More on this in future videos. Hope this helps. - Patrick
That is quite common, Lilly. The first step would be to start by rocking back and forth on your back, until you can do it smoothly. Then rolling should be much easier. Hope this helps! - Patrick
Indeed, Plebus, when on the feet, it is preferable to remain standing in most cases. That being said, rolling is an essential basic movement for mobility when on the ground. Hope this helps. - Patrick

Rolling is still very hard for me but this is the most helpful video out there. I hope I will finally be able to roll softly using your technique.

I can roll but the floor is so hard
Yes, it is better to practice on a mat at first. Although once your technique is perfect, it shouldn't hurt on a hard floor. - Patrick
Rolling still hurts for me
