Neo Yokio is like Ghost Stories dub. It's a big abridged series. All those glorious one liners gives me hope.
"My boyfriend is the DJ and he spins Gregorian house."
    "I CAN SEE YOU BITCH!"
"Man, racer so full of themselves" "Humility will only slow them down".
"COCO CHANNEL, MAY HER MEMORY REST IN PEACE."
    "You cuckcoo banana!"
    "Are we homies?"
But yeah, it's jumping from one part too much. If this get S2, I hope they explore what the hell is happening.
We get Shia Labeuf too if it's popular enough to be on S2...

MetalCrow448 It's just the shit i was expecting. I watched the clip before I went to watch everything and thought, "Do they really say this on the show?" They do.
Ghost Stories dub is famous for lampooning the original, but Neo Yokio is on whole new level because IT IS already the original. It's a new level of ridiculous, because you can't abridged this series, the series IS abridged already.
I said Ghost Stories better tho, Neo Yokio needs to be more train wreck.

MetalCrow448 Dude, the show is personification of Jaden Smith twitter. Some of the words even get into the show. I'm not even sure if they're being serious or just make an anime to have fun. Looking at the VA, how the hell they accept it as a job still a question.
Then again, we need to ask Vampire Weekend vocalist whether he makes it bad on purpose or not.

So, Ezra Koenig (ambassador of Cape Cod) is the preppiest man who wants everyone to know about his Ivy League education but also wants everyone to know he’s cool and smokes weed. And I love him and his fucking great. Also, Vampire Weekend is pretty fucking good. And you’ll understand why this show is the way it is a little bit more if you check them out possibly, maybe.

Best Guy, I think you're underselling the complexity in Neo Yokio.
You talk about the sudden reveal of the slums like it's bad writing, but it's really not. We don't know about how poorly the lower class lives because Kaz doesn't know about how poorly the lower class lives. Kaz lives in a bubble in the same way the viewer is made to live in a bubble.
In episode 1, when Kaz exorcised Helena, he ends up accidentally cracking the glass dome she lives in, which causes her to go from a fashion blogger to an anti-capitalist hikikomori. He literally burst her bubble, or, more specifically, the demon possessing her burst her bubble (the fact that their street appears to be flooded and that the people living their would rather live in waterproof bubbles than move is a visual representation of their inability to acknowledge a problem and accept change).
One bit of subtext that everyone I've seen has failed to pick up on is that the "demons" are poor people. Whether they're a metaphor for poor people or the actual ghosts of poor people, I can't say because I'm not the author, but there's clearly some parallels and clues there.
Helena only changed her ways after the demon possessed her, thus introducing the idea that the poor are suffering. Keep in mind that, for all intents and purposes, she might as well have been in a coma while she was possessed. No outside stimulus was provided to her that would make her change her ways, but if the demon really understood the plight of the poor, then it would stand to reason that those ideas would end up in Helena's head. And remember how she was in the hospital in episode 2? Her dad says it was because she "took a little tumble down the stairs". He says this so casually and is so quick to disregard his daughter's well being after his wife says snacks are ready that it's clear he doesn't care, and was most likely the one who pushed her down those stairs when she started her anti-capitalist talk.
In episode 2, we also meet Sailor Pellegrino, who ends up as Kaz's date to the black and white ball. When Kaz says he has to work at the ball, she says she doesn't care about that as long as she can go with him, and that there's no shame in working for a living. This is a surprisingly reasonable thing to say, which makes it even more surprising when she turns out to be a demon. Surprising, unless you consider the idea that demons are actually poor people, in which case it makes perfect sense that she'd treat Kaz's working for a living as an okay thing, when everyone else mocks him for it.
There's other little details, too, like how the demons in the first 2 episodes were possessing Helena's custom-made designer clothes and disguised as a pop star to feed on the upper-class's celebrity worship. The fact that Sailor Pellegrino possessed a diamond-encrusted human skull is a metaphor in and of itself, but it's an actual art piece that's often been criticized in the art community as a flagrant display of wealth, and is ironically worth more than the diamonds used to encrust it. In episode 3, Kaz even drops a line about the French hating demons even more than Neo Yokians, which seems like just a weird joke about how [insert nationality here] is weird, but when you consider that France also has a reputation as a high-class, fancy country, it makes more sense why they'd hate demons, who are angry proletariat spirits out for revenge.
This idea of demons as poor people is even buried in the idea of "rat catchers". Why are the Magistocrats called "rat catchers" when there's really no parallels between demons and rats? Well, there is. The "rats" are street rats. Poor people who were trod upon by the rich in life and are out for revenge in death. The rich ignore the poor/demons until they're a problem in the same way that we ignore rats until there's one in the pantry.
The bachelor billboard thing is a way to keep the rich under control. Kaz and Arcangelo constantly fight and compete, but as soon as the billboard is destroyed, Arcangelo wants to be friends with Kaz, and even helps Kaz smuggle Helena out of the city. The fact of the matter is that Kaz, Arcangelo, and all of the other top bachelors are popular, handsome, charismatic men who could easily rally people to their cause if they were to suddenly have a cause to rally people to. The billboard is so important because it keeps them in a constant dick measuring contest where they care more about a meaningless title than their own fellow man.
It's worth noting that Kaz is mostly a good kid, but he has a lot of growing up to do. Episode 4 had him neglect Charles and sexually assault Lexi, but he did so out of ignorance and skewed priorities. Episode 6 had him competing in a potentially deadly race to save Helena, despite the fact that the Soviet racer already ran off and Kaz had nothing to personally gain. The whole series was about Kaz sinking deeper and deeper into his swamp of materialism, but with a glimmer of hope for redemption, which may come in season 2.
If there ever is a season 2, I theorize that it'll be about Kaz exploring communism, although it likely won't be a blatant endorsement of communism. The race in episode 6 had Kaz wearing Soviet racing gear, which could be a metaphor for rich kids wearing communism as a fashion statement without really understanding what it means. This is also the state Kaz is in when he's confronted with the reality of how shitty the poor have it. What you said about it neither endorsing communism nor capitalism is true, but I think that's the point. Neither ideology is perfect, and capitalism just seems perfect to Kaz and all of the other main characters because they're on the top and not the bottom. Neo Yokio is very deep and intellectual and doesn't paint things in a black and white way.
I think your comparison to Totally Spies is actually very spot on, because many pseudo-anime from the early 2000's, including Totally Spies, are about a teenager/group of teenagers trying to save the world while also maintaining their social life. Neo Yokio takes this concept and goes crazy with it, making Kaz into a socialite who cares about his social status more than anything. The fact that it looks like a shitty early 2000's pseudo-anime is clearly intentional, since it invokes more tropes from that than it does from actual anime.
I could write about this brilliant work of art for hours and still have more to say, but the point is that before you dismiss some aspects as "bad writing", maybe take a closer look at what those so-called "mistakes" are trying to say. The fact that you can appreciate this pile of absolute brilliance at least says that you're not totally hopeless, but you have much to learn before you can ascend to my level of intellect and appreciate Neo Yokio in its full glory.

    • @yourfathersfather8751
      @yourfathersfather8751 7 років тому +38

For a shitpost, this raises some legitimately interesting points. I'm catching myself unironically wondering sometimes if that interview people are pointing to is even valid. I mean, what if the creator is telling people there's no hidden meaning so that it has more of an impact if there is one down the line?
This show is the weirdest fucking thing on right now, since in almost every aspect, it's trash and feels like Ghost Stories with the quality of writing, as if it's one huge shitpost. But then with how terrible they've made almost every major character, I can't help but think there HAS to be more to this show- how could anyone produce something like this that features so much tone-deaf pompousness? Why would they bring up the issues they have?
Honestly, at this point, I don't even want a season 2 because I like the show- I want a season 2 to find out if it really is just complete tone-deaf trash or if it was pulling the classic "I was only PRETENDING to be retarded" card.

The left turn isn't that surprising or awkward. It's like Fahrenheit 451, where the latter elements come in kind of quickly. The second to last episode has an illusion break. The Russian driver is also an allusion to this. Even though Kaz experiences all the stuff and he still isn't fully woke at the end in his final lines, still a sheep. And even then he's still in the dystopia at the end not realizing its dystopian, because he's in the part of the society that is doing well despite it. It's like showing poor people why rich people don't help them. It explains itself.

A couple points about Neo Yokio's critique of capitalism that you may have overlooked while watching it.
Introducing the whole "we don't care about the slum people" at the last minute out of nowhere seemed intentional to me. The aristocracy lives in its own little bubble and a wee lil sadboy like Kaz doesn't see outside of his own social circles enough to be aware of the troubles of other classes. You as the viewer are watching from Kaz's perspective so you get the same experience. (good writing choice? you're right, probably not)
Yes, capitalism is great for the parts of Neo Yokio that Kaz and the viewer spend time in, but just like irl capitalism it requires many more people living in poverty to sustain a relatively small number of aristocrats living in opulence. These impoverished masses go largely unseen by the aristocrats. The Soviet driver's only view of capitalism is inside that aristocratic bubble so it would make sense that she would then believe that capitalism is amazing, even if the show's writers aren't trying to say that's true.
I'm not saying Neo Yokio makes the best critique of capitalism but I think it did a better job than you give it credit for. It definitely could have been more clear what they were going for, but I don't think I'm reading too far into it to claim that this is at least what they were Trying to say.

One thing I would say about this show that puts it into perspective is that it's kind of an aesthetic show. Not as in it looks cool, but as in the joke is ambient, it's the setting, the first joke it tells is that it even exists like what is this. It doesn't just have jokes in it, it has an aura of jokes that kind of spikes into tangible jokes at certain moments which may not be an explicit gag but just a thematic juxtaposition. Maybe I'm reading too much into it though...

Solid review. Also, the capitalist critiques are all throughout the show; the underwater half of the city (Climate Change), the worship of materialism and celebrity, that leader board (NewYork Stock Exchange) that ranks the men according to their worth, even what the demons say (☭). The show has been hinting at some pretty radical ideals, I'm actually really excited to see where the show goes.
Also, "Stuff" is not an indication of success. Neo Yokio looks nice, but once you scratch pass the surface you can see the massive problems and inequality. As for the Soviet character, being that she from what we can assume is Soviet Russia she's probably never seen so many expensive commodities in one place before. Russia was a very poor country and the revolution saw the country (and its people) grow both in wealth and material conditions.

So I guess we can actually call Neo Yokio as "Retarded fanfiction liberal commie-tier americanized shit for brainless hamburger-zombies". - Taken from the most intelligentest people on MAL.
    Also, new wallpaper: 22:46
Also, I'm still trying to find a good enough NSFW sound made by the No Longer Hobo Brony Jesus aka Digi.

I'm sure this'll get buried, but I strongly encourage anyone who hasn't to give Ezra Koenig's music a shot. Haven't seen this show and probably won't for a while, but I started listening to Vampire Weekend in like 2010 and have probably spent more hours with their music than I have with any other artist. Reviews of Neo-Yokio have been pretty polar from what I've seen, but I think the general consensus among critics and fans is that Ezra is an excellent songwriter & lyricist. The band's image, after their 2008 self-titled release, became associated with a sort of Ivy-league/prep-school, WASP-y vibe that I think haunts the band to this day, and it's hard to tell whether the band intended to display their "culture" so proudly or if this was a side-effect of bad direction. It definitely contributed to the initial buzz around the band. But their music and lyrics tell a slightly different story; songs like "The Ladies of Cambridge" or "Walcott" off their debut aren't exactly satirical, but they do get a lot of mileage out of songs that mock the rigidity of Northeastern old money family (i.e. "privilege"). Ezra's lyrics in particular reminded me of like F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, playfully needling society for its outdated, exclusive customs instead of just outright dissing it.
I'm definitely nerdy about this band, but if I am it's because they had such a profound impact on me as a teenager, and I feel like I've grown with the music and have experienced how the world changes along with it. Hopefully some reviewer will eventually cover Neo-Yokio from the perspective of a VW fan, because I think a lot of people are simply put off by the introduction of this big, uncomfortable "anime" world as people were who picked up on the initial hype and listened to the band's first album without the proper context. Wish I could say something original about the show, but I probably won't watch it for the time being. I've been a big fan of this channel for a while (I was drawn in with the Reddit crowd by the Gal-ko video), and don't watch much anime or post comments, but I've began following the Procrastinators and have enjoyed all of the content Nate's made so far (MIAMAFV even got my hooked on Joanna Newsom so this is just me trying to return the favor). My advice for anyone who hasn't heard "A-Punk" (and you probably have, in a Walmart or something!) to give it a shot, and then bring up "Step" or "Diane Young" and maybe give them a spin. If you've got the patience, I recommend listening to the albums in chronological order, at the very least I bet you'll walk away with a different opinion on the show than you had before.

Very good video and VERY GOOD CRITICISM!!! Most other people just don't get this show at all and label it as shit. I do think everyone is wrong about Jayden's performance though, I think his laid back delivery of his lines fits Kaz Kann's character perfectly, I laugh every time he opens his mouth.

To me Neo Yokio is like what would happen if a western kid from the 90s and early 2000s got to make the anime they came up with in middle school. The character designs are reminiscent of those bad how to draw anime books, and the story is fanfic style writing about a self-absorbed kid with superpowers. Heck even the voice acting is a jab at the dubs from that era. If you were the kind of kid who grew up in the U.S. and had a dumb idea for an anime then this is for you. A lot of the people who aren't into it probably don't have that backstory.
