- Hard-core aficionados and casual coffee-lovers have formed a new culture of specialty-coffee appreciation. In this flourishing industry, caffeinated connoisseurs form close relationships with the farmers who produce the beans, and educate their customers on why and how to make the best brews. From a twenty-nine-dollar cup of coffee to competitions in brewing, roasting, and tasting, you could call it an obsession.

Well the title read “Annals of Obsession”
Dear God, your answer is EVERYTHING..🤘🏾👍🏾
omg I'm dead 😂😂😂
Lmao
I was pretty interested until buddy wondered what coffee paired best with fish.
@szskjz Isn't that what we're all doing?
same lol bunch of twats. I enjoy my high quality colombian coffee in the morning but you don't have to be a pretentious prick about it
Fish Bowl is lovely.
@szskjz They are not bored.
How much is the fish
Where’s Jordan Schlansky
We need him at that coffee barista/roaster/brewer/taster competition pronto. He'd be the Simon Cowell of coffee competitions.
Italian douche road trip
He actually have a pretty bad understanding of what high-end coffee is.
Probably also working down 200 hours on his Grindr.
Grinder?
I don't care what anybody says. I love hipster coffee. They do really know their stuff (most of the time). I use to be one of those who would use excessive amounts of cream and sugar/syrups/sauce to mask the bitterness of bad coffees. Now, I can enjoy coffee black for good quality coffee. Since, it's a luxury to get that type of coffee. I've also scaled down on drinking coffee. And that's been a good thing too. I just know how to appreciate coffee more.
In other parts of the world this is not "hipster coffee" its just coffee
I mean, I'd rather drink cream with sugar/syrups/sauce rather than coffee, but it's just me.
I roast my coffee, grind it and brew it ala Turkish, pour over (v60), cafetera or French press .. and I drink it black, without sugar.
But I don't drink less of it.
Also, I do not look or behave like any of these insufferable attention whores.
@@TheOneAndOnlySame Wow! You’re so cool! If only we could all be like you. “Cafetera” is just coffee maker in Spanish. That could be anything lol. At least try getting your names right before trash-talking others.
@@liama4199 cafetera is the familiar name the Italians use for the Bialetti-types coffee pots . Smartass.. oh, you're probably one of those insufferable morons I criticized :'D
"Dear farmer, please ferment the coffee for 32 hours and 16 seconds."
"¿Qué....?"
At 42 degrees for the first 10 hours, then 10 hours at 45 degrees, then up to 50 degrees for the last 10 hours, and then let it chill gradually for the last 2 hours - then immediately chill with an ice batch to stop fermentation...

I love this trend. For 5-10 bucks daily, I can geek out on a piece of my life that is ordinarily mundane and share it. At the office, I have a hand grinder, hario v60, kettle, paper and some decent coffee. With that, I get a social and sharing experience that I look forward to daily. My favorite part is that also bridges the gaps between teams.
You hit the nail on the head!!!
my hario v60 is collecting dust. too time consuming to use. nowadays, I just toss some fresh ground coffee on boiled water the filter with a strainer, if im feeling it. most days I drink instant coffee.
Shhh... Let people enjoy things.
I honestly thought this was a sarcastic comment. Until the end, I kept waiting for the punch line
I'm probably going out on a limb but...While I can see why some of the people in this video can be seen as "hipsters" or "a little too into coffee." I'm quite certain that the majority of those commenting with immature / mocking comments both don't drink specialty coffee and or seek to enjoy and explore the craft behind the foods they eat and beverages they drink. People should be able to develop a passion and appreciation for whatever they want without being mocked by those who don't have any desire to delve past what's right in front of them (e.g.fast food, processed foods, cheap beer, chain store coffee...) (especially in the US).
Watching this is 2am makes we want to drink coffee before bed...now I will wait to the morning but it’s gonna like Christmas tomorrow.
Tobin Polk (1:19) looks exactly like someone I would imagine with the name Tobin Polk
The cool thing about coffee is that you can drink the best coffee in the world for like $25 a bag. There are your Kona and Geisha coffees that are much more rare but they aren't necessarily better. There are plenty of award winning coffees for a very affordable price.
I must say, I get these people. I have an idea in my mind, of what should the perfect cup of coffee taste like, and I'm pretty sure all these people feel it the same and are willing to spend years on a quest to find it.
taste is subjective and its not fun to have the same drink over and over
I suppose I can make a general statement in regards to the hipster influence if you will. I always believed the most negative aspect of hipsterdom is taking and using coffee traditions and such and adding such an ego and a sense of entitlement to their knowledge. There is nothing wrong with professionalism, passion, and pride in your product in regards to coffee, but it is when you act superior for your knowledge, that to me is a disservice to the passion and traditions. (Insert death metal, jazz, craft beer, and the like for coffee, for other examples)

I love that specialty coffe is being more and more popular every year!
My old SM trained us on proper grind and fixing the grinder in the store. It's probably one of the most important parts to me being a barista.
I’m the type of idiot to pay $29 for a cup of coffee if I’m feeling “adventurous” I’ll just admit it.

I'd do it once just to try it, and then never again
Your money. Do as you like. Everyone needs a hobby.

The elephant in the room is the brutal bathroom experience all these caffeine heads experience daily.
I don't believe specialty coffee consumers drink more coffee than other coffee consumers
If your drinking high qaulity coffee! You wont have bathroom issues
Arabica has half the caffeine than Robusta (comercial) coffee
I drink coffee FOR the bathroom experience!
That’s only an issue for some people. I drink 5-7 cups each day, and have no issues.
I’m watching this while drinking Nescafé
I'm really tempted to drink my next cup of coffee with the spoon!
There are some pretty cool people associated with speciality coffee: James Hoffmann and Tim Wendelboe are few that come to mind. Then there is this dude out here talking about paring coffee with fish as coffee culture... SMH!
I follow James Hoffman too. That guy comes with a lot of knowledge and is down to earth. He rocks a smooth British accent, but he's not pompous or arrogant at all.
SMH! LMAO ROFL WTF!
yeah james " the whispering guy" hoffman
took in my first James Hoffmann video literally yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed it - wish he had more posts
Scott Rao is pretty good. He can be a bit of a troll, but I love him for it.

The best coffee ever is found in small towns around the coffee axis in Colombia, drinking coffee there blends amazingly with the authenticity of the places and people.

They seem to have a competitive interaction with the beer and wine industry!
"How many people know the farmer who grew their beer?" I don't think this guy knows much about beer
Cameron Chilcoat I know a guy with a beer garden.
I think he said “brew” but yeah idk
What about hops you clown?! FFS idiot, how thick you gotta be?
He meant the farmer who grew the beans. So for wine it’d be the farmer who produced/grew the grapes
"Omg Ricardo this was fermented only 11 Hours and 46 minutes!"

I wanna watch this video all day
Never had SEY but I've had Blue bottle. Is it better?
Acidity and sourness isn’t associated with high brew temperatures... low temperatures produce sourness. ‘Acidity’ is such a broad term it almost means nothing on its own. High temperatures often result in over extraction and can highlight the inherent ‘roast’ notes in the coffee (which isn’t good by the way)
How about doing the same for really good tea.
there probably is a specialty tea market
Go to meileaf's youtube channel.
Pretty certain that’s already a thing
already exists, and tea is way more expensive than coffee
Teavana used to have more than 375 specialty tea shops. They were all over the place, and featured a large, creative selection of very nice teas, of all kinds. Reminded me of great tea shops in Canada and other Commonwealth countries, which probably inspired Teavana's founders in Georgia. Then Starbucks bought the company, closed all their stores, and trashed the product lines. The greedy mermaid empire reduced a fine, inventive company to a few meager items. Vulture capitalism.

As a European with 300 years of coffee consumtion history, it blows my mind to hear that:
a) it all started with instant coffee...
b) Starbucks made fresh ground and brewed coffee known to the American people...
c) the way these statements are casually made as if they were a global phenomenon... that only applies for the US, the rest had a coffee culture long before that... (e.g. Dallmeyr, Café Procope etc...)
Now I understand why by Americans, Europeans are seen as "cultured".
Did you mean 30 years?
Because america has turned into a trashy ghetto place
@@techhelpportal7778 he meant 30 decades, not 30 years. People in Europe have been drinking coffee for centuries. Even the espresso machine is about a century old.
Oh trust me, I know your pain. We get to live with these zombies, they make life difficult for everyone. I don't think they understand what they're talking about at all. These mommies grown infants are clueless about the real world outside of their coffee mug.
The waves of coffee thing originated with Trish Rothgeb in 2002, not that long ago. Second wave coffee is my favorite, and Starbucks is a weak example of it. It began with Alfred Peet in Berkeley in the 1970s. I worked for a roaster in Oakland in the 90s, and the older Italian gentleman who started it said that many of the very hard bean, high grown coffees were no longer available. Those coffees withstood the intensity of dark roasting, yielding complex and full bodied cups. Somehow along the way, the so called third wave became obsessed with basically a cupping roast, which for some of us is way too underdeveloped. In the end, it's all a matter of taste.
Great stuff!

When's that Coffee 'Sommolier' docuflix coming out?
I also enjoy master/bating/and/art as it is more. 🖼️🖌️🧸
It'll be interesting to see how these third wave roasters and coffee shops handle the pandemic situation. It seems like trying to sell premium coffee for a premium price will become ever more difficult as we see a regression to even a first wave setting where people mostly want affordable coffee.
Between last year and this year the 3rd wave of coffee grew more than ever before. Prices of coffee keep going up. It's the next wine.
It's nice that they recognize the farmers on the pack but I hope those farmers get their full rights to the land they till and maximum profits. Agrarian reform and climate justice, now that's how to honor farmers.

In a world of people that think a Dbl/Dbl is coffee, or most takeout coffee is coffee, This is over the top.
So because there’s a wide variety of coffee, you’ve decided one end is over the top? What kind of logic is that?
@@BlownMacTruck just saying this is the polar opposite of the typical TimmyHo dbldbl slurper. The fact coffee has a taste other than cream and sugar is a good thing.
The whole 'history' part of this is pretty USA-centric. It's almost as if those 500 years of Yemeni, Ottoman, & European development didn't happen at all. Plus, if you're going to play off the whole 'commodity' vs 'specialty' coffee thing, surely you'd at least mention the London Stock Exchange and all that.

What is the best coffee for people with GERD? Thanks before
Have you tried decaff? Honestly just asking out of curiosity. Because my logic is, if you respond well with a decaff coffee then maybe you can goof around with the brewing method to get the lowest amount of caffeine while retaining the flavours. Btw, Indonesian?
@@abduljabbaralhayyan7791 I've tried decaff coffee before and I don't like it. Taste like watered down coffee. I want some strong coffee, but don't get crazy in my belly. Too much to ask I guess. Btw, yes I'm Indonesian. How can you tell?
@@maradensiregar8793 Saya juga WNI hahahaha. Tapi waktu minum decaff GERDnya ga kumat ya? Kalau iya, berarti problemnya di kandungan kafeinnya. I'd be okay with this if the farmers are also making as much as these coffee artisans. ALOT OF THESE COFFEE FARMERS ARE EXPLOITED!
Micah Luarez The coffee community, more than any other industry, puts extreme importance on fair trade and responsible growing. Some roasters will even post the amount they pay farmers for their beans, and most all roasters are shunned by the community should they not meet the standards of fair trade that are expected in the coffee business.
Fair trade is not fair, it is just a 'beating your wife less' model, beating your worker less. Fair trade "in order for fair trade to be fair the conditions of social protection and remuneration should be identical between producer and consumer" (www.maxhavelaarfrance.org).These clowns give exaggerated importance to their job based on dramatizing their labour, real labour is in production.
