    These are great counterpoints to the prior video. The fact that runewords made white and grey items suddenly important makes for such a diverse itemization in Diablo 2. Unlike other games where "the next tier color" is the only color that matters which is so boring, so flat.

      + When you find high rune you know it's dope because you can actually make insane item with it unlike with most uber rare uniques/sets which mostly sucks. There si actually a reward for its rarity.

      From act 1 normal on, you can look forward to drops and drops matter. whereas in d4, you don't really care about drops until endgame.

    II play offline and I just want to be op so badly.. I’m that way..
    I think the COA should have +2 or even +3 to all skills on it!! ESPECIALLY because it’s so elusive…. And verdungo needs a+ 1 on it! So I guess I see it as underpowered uniques as opposed to overpowered runewords..
    that’s me .. and if most people want to take the PD2 vision online.. it still should be a choice

    i like runes but i found most of the arguments for them not very compelling. them being better for trade currency and adding value to bases i agreed with though.

    I don't think this contradicts the other video. Existence of runewords is not bad in itself, what is bad is the existence of runewords which are too cheap/too powerful. For example no one really complains about HotO even though it's more powerful than Spirit, simply because it requires a Vex to make, making it more expensive/harder to find than the uniques is replaces.
    CTA is not the best example, because practically speaking only Ohm is relevant here - base doesn't matter and other runes are significantly cheaper and easier to get (you can drop them from forge and Countess), so in the end it's pretty much the same as hunting for a specific unique.
    Real upside of runes is that they can be used for many different applications, so unlike items, they have much bigger demand. There are very few items which are useful for pretty much anyone (something like Shako or Mara's). On top of that there are lots of them with different supply (so different value), which makes them perfect for currency. And obviously if it wasn't for powerful runewords, runes would be worthless.

    I can't get over the fact that no other game has replicated that balance of depth and simplicity in terms of itemization. Diablo 2 to this day still one of, if not, the best itemization system in the genre.

    Yeah, I really think Runewords saved Diablo II from fading into obscurity over the years. Some may be overpowered and needing of balancing but overall they have been a massive net positive for the game and its longevity. Unless D2 increased the drop rates for some of the uniques and GG magic/rare/white items in the game I think people would have stopped coming back without runewords supplementing the search for endgame items. I think it would simply take to long for the average player to gear out an endgame character, and the droprate between GG drops would be to few and far between. This implementation of progression towards a GG item cannot be praised more in my opinion. People clown on D2's crafting system, but Runewords are essentially a crafted item as well. As you mentioned every part in the runeword making process is a little reward. Finding a base is a reward, finding each rune is a little reward and this matters when items in this game can be SO rare. Like I have THOUSANDS of hours in this game and have found some items only once. Lets say it takes 40 hours to find the runes and base for a runeword, and the same 40 hours to farm a comparable single unique. Which feels better to the player? Getting a drop every few hours, or getting nothing until the end. I think the answer is obvious.
    So many other ARPGs have you collecting meaningless crafting materials that have zero other use outside of crafting/modifying a unique/legendary. Meanwhile runes have multiple uses, they can be currency for trading, used individually for their affixes like Ist for MF and Cham for cannot be frozen, and they can be used in multiple different runewords giving the user choice. I have played Diablo II since the original launch, with breaks of course, but I can pretty definitively say without runewords I would never have picked the game back up or played D2R.

    Can't agree more. PoE is too much complication, d2 is so simple yet so satisfying. I have a complicated job, I just want to have fun and grind simple stuff in my free time.

    I love Runewords! Runewords missing out of D3 and d4 made is a big miss...

      I don't think it is single reason. Or even main one. I personally hate runewords (for the reasons of previous video). And I play without them (Spirit is abomination of game balance). And man I love D2 so much even without runewords. So game has superior itemization even without it!

      D2 itemization is superior to let's see: d3, d4. That's it. It's just superior within diablo franchise. Compared to other arpg like poe, grim dawn, last epoch, even titan quest, d2 itemization is a joke.

    Something that runewords did great was to give you a "guarantee" of an item that does something. Instead of thinking if you're gonna find X item you can plan for getting a guaranteed Y item that does the job.
    Also another thing I'd say is that they promoted Ladder play when runewords earlier were ladder specific. This increased their value in trading too. (Which is an important part of the game)

    It still blows my mind the room and the word concept was never taken into other games I can’t tell you how excited I was to get my first EBOTD Zerker axe for my zeal paladin Back in the day running chaos sanctuary forever until it dropped that level of excitement is unreal

    I like the building wealth part , while hunting for what I want being able to sell pammys , rals , junk jewels etc allows me to not feel like my time is wasted

    IMO it's because you're *building* towards a powerful item through farming, rather than hoping for perfect RNG for that one in 10000 unique critical for your build. Every rune is technically useful to some degree thanks to trading and Horadric Cube recipes, so when you finally complete that super rare and powerful runeword it *feels* like linear progression and reward for spending hours grinding those runes and bases.
    As a side note, POE achieves an identical progression through its gems and is why progression in that game also feels rewarding.

      It seems D2r classic and legacy / 1.09 classic are 2 different things. There isn’t a lot out there regarding what can drop in D2r classic.

    The calculation regarding Griffon's eye, although correct, is not painting the whole picture :) You don't NEED to kill 25k bosses to get the diadem, because by the time you kill even 1/4 of those monsters you will definitely find something else of great value that you can trade for that diadem. That's why trading in D2 is so important.

    i guess this is why i loose interest in this game so quickly. i play it for a month to realize how boring it becomes so quickly for me and delete it for 11 months.....literally my last season i had a lvl 88 necro and lvl 72 paladin and haven't had a rune higher than Gul, so all these "amazing" rune words I have never seen except on diablo wiki. sure some where quite nice and you can make a build that is decent but all the cool stuff I have never even seen.
    and forget the uniques, what is the point of cool set items when i get like 1-2 pieces from a 6 piece set, like at least make that at higher drop rate per class....people rave about the game but after lvl 75 once i beat hell i find it pretty borring.

    On my 1.13 level 95 frenzy barb in my stash is two 5 socket ettin axes with hel ohm um Lo... They've been sitting there waiting for that cham rune to make doom.. Its no longer diablo at that point cause once most of the loot you want is so high level or niche the game really just becomes a gambling addiction where every monster or urn or chest or corpse or log or basket is really a slot machine pull.. Your just gambling basically.. Its my favorite game but there is a torturing element to getting high level loot..

    Runewords are fine, but uniques and sets need to be seriously buffed, at least 20-30% and even in some cases 50%.

    A better take than the last video. Many of us want the constant small drips of dopamine that mid runes and base hunting offers. Then Jah/Ber or Griffon's/Dweb eventually drops and knocks you off your feet.

    Runewords made getting through the game a lot more consistent and made some builds viable that otherwise wouldn't be. Like you said in the video about runewrods ruining D2 though, some are just way too over powered and are in need of a nerf to balance them out (and hopefully a buff to some of the more useless ones).

      Without runewords i would have quit, i got the runewords thanks to friends, D2 invented slotmachine finding in video Games... D2 does keep the feeling all items matter and runewords are only if you Want easy way (but you must Grind thus sending you to Trade and commmunity). Great game, i love it and love to collect the gear

    The teleport on occy is not a downside unless you disrespect the enemies and let them beat on you when you shouldn't. It's saved me way more often than it's sabotaged me.

    Never thought about the "parting it out" part of it as one of the benefits, and the choices between what you're doing. I'm actually doing that right now. I've got 2 Ohm runes, do I cube them to make a Lo and get a grief for my barb? or do i make a 2nd CTA for my fire druid? What a great game, and what a great insight into what made runewords what they are

    This is beautiful information for new players. I know alot of poeple who enjoy this game but after they complete he'll mode they think it's over. I tell them they have completed about %1 the game 😊

    I think the concept of runewords is great, and an itemization built from the ground up with it would be amazing. The tension comes in that it was bolted on to an existing system and invalidated those existing options while simultaneously having a limited amount of the new runeword based options.
    I think it would be better if the system was designed such that there was more variance in what was best for various builds. Tone down the effects of the runewords to just the things that make them really unique, and then allow you to use magic or rares as bases instead of purely whites/greys. You then get all the benefits of stretching out the excitement into micro doses while also having more diversity in what builds use what.
    But in the world we actually live in and the D2 we have, yeah, a few runewords could use slight nerfs. They should still be made to be good options, but they don't need to be the only options.
    Grief should either use the same kind of damage bonuses as everything else, or have a lower amount of the kind of bonus damage it gives now.
    For Enigma, a complete movement overhaul is probably warranted, but that is too much to ask for. I think a series of smaller nerfs can do the job. Rank 1 of Teleport should be harder to use effectively somehow. Cooldown would be an easy answer, but that is not very D2. My first shot would be increasing the mana cost fairly significantly. Let it be used as a tool to escape sticky situations, or to engage the enemies in interesting ways, but untenable to just zip through a whole dungeon or pop from each pack of mobs to the next endlessly. Sorcerers tend to have higher mana and better regen than most other classes, and higher ranks of teleport could always also be adjusted to start to revert this nerf as it applies to Sorcerers specifically. I can't recall exactly how it interacts, but if +All Skills effects these off class skills, that should be nerfed out as well. Just getting something so far outside your normal kit is cool enough.
    Its been a year or so since I played D2R, so forgive me if the details of stuff I said here is a little fuzzy. And thanks Llama for making D2 content engaging enough that I still like to watch and comment on it while not actively playing the game.

    5:38 Even finding the base to make a runeword in it can be exciting. If the base rolled with the best attributes but the runeword rolled crappy, you can remove the runes and try again with the same base.

    The right solution to make rare and magic items in d2 interesting again would be:
    1. Rebalance base items (& Poison plz XD)
    2. Rebalance Runewords
    3. Add new interesting Affixes to the Rare and Magic Pool. (i.e. FCR on shields, CB on weapons, DS on weapons, Pierce chance, etc)
    But all that re-balancing is too much work and not its gonna Happen. (At least until Microsoft realize that can get good money out of us)

    The fast and dirty solution IMO:
    1. Make Larzuk roll the number of sockets on unique items (from 1 to Max) instead of just 1
    2. Make Larzuk and the Horadric cube recipe roll the number of sockets on rare items (from 1 to Max) instead of just 1
    3. Make Larzuk add the max number of sockets on Magic items
    Some might say it's too much power creep but lets be real what is the best that can be done with that 100% IAS - 60% crushing blow - Fools Mod? Most High End runewords are better than that.
    For uniques and rares can be easily weighted so you get:
    100% chance of at least 1 socket
    50% chance of at least 2 sockets
    25% chance of at least 3 sockets
    12.5% chance of at least 4 sockets
    6.25% chance of at least 5 sockets
    3.12% chance of 6 sockets
    Most of the time you get 2-3 sockets which is pretty fair. 7% of the time you get and actually GG item.
    This change alone:
    1. Will Improve trade, because people will have more valuable random magic and rare items to trade, no just JMoDs, and Five-nado Pelts.
    2. Will add value to "bad" uniques.
    3. It self regulates because Larzuk's quests and SOJs are already limited resources.
    4. Potentially open the door to new builds.
    Said that, it probably never gonna happen either :( one can dream.

    Before I even watch this I need to say thank you a million without you and Ginger i'd be lost coming back to this game on Nintendo switch. haven't played since 2003. I appreciate your wisdom on runes, as a result i save them all and cube them up as i go, its a chore but it works. All I really need now is a little help tweaking my stats and gear, Straffe Zon is SICK BTW thanks again.

    I think that Runewords make the game better overall for sure..great points all round here, especially that the lowest tier items have great value as bases.
    All they need to do is rebalance uniques by looking at which runewords outclass them and why. Also, i think if there was a way to change teleport charges on circlets and amulets to an Oskill we'd have a nice solution for the necessity everyone feels with Enigma.

    well runewords should be balanced around the unique items on around the same lvl bracket.
    lets say you have stealth...
    Stealth shouldn't be declassing every fuckin single unique / rare / magic armor you can ever find on normal and probably up to vipermagi
    and be like 1000x times easier to find and be almost no RNG based since chances for tal are like 1/5?
    if you plann your run to the point that every time doesn't matter what drops you end up with stealth till the moment you drop vipermagi... or make treachery on melee characters then it is huge balance flaw xD
    which basically makes a game even smaller than it is...
    People who simply don't know about cheesy runewords or have no idea about how useless DEFENCE is have way better time in the game because they can appriciate more items which drops and have better time :P
    It is huge balance / design flaw

      Defense is only useless if you don't have a Barb to buff it with Shout (or some other significant defense boost like Defiance + Holy Shield). The real cheese of the game is running two accounts, so you have a dedicated war cry Barb. With 2800 life and 25k defense on my HC sorc, I was nearly un-killable by physical damage -- life pool large enough to never be stun locked, and enemies having 30% chance to hit me in Hell A5, with my merc equally tanky. The only danger was nasty combos with multiple damage modifiers.

      defence is useless regardless, scaling more or less looks like... 1k def = 70% chance to get hit
      25k def = 60% chance to get hit and its only when u stand still or walk...
      you shouldn't ever go melee with anyone
      defence always will was and will be worst stat when it comes to effective hp calculations.
      Hp > res > DR > absorbs > 75 other different random stats > defence
      That is more or less order in which you build up your character tankyness and effective hp

    Off the wall thought: would putting in a system to "build" unique and set items alleviate some of the advantages of rune words presented in this video? For instance, cubing a white shako with the proper runes turns that shako into the unique version. The runes used need not reflect the affixes on the item but should be chosen to reflect the relative rarity of the targeted unique item. Would this help or hurt the game?

      Honestly an interesting idea. May make it too easy to get the uniques you want but also a cool idea where a white Shako base or something at least could give a chance you roll it to unique with some rune or something

      @@MrLlamaSC Could be a use for the higher runes that don't have much use. Maybe a Gul for a 10% chance to roll a shako or something. The point would be to make the rune cost to be more rare than the item itself but something that could be traded or built to.

    in D2 there are two types of players the Dueler who usually jsps or buys gear just to duel, and the item hunter who gets their rocks off finding that Tal armor or HR drop.

    As for buffing uniques.. I think the solution could be in wider range of its best (most important) affix(es) with very high numbers. Lets take, Crushflange, for example. Imagine if its enhanced damage could roll up to +500% (in extremely rare case). Normally it is +50-60%. And in most cases it will be like it is. But there are slight chances it could go higher, to +100, 200, 300, 400, 500 range (less and less chance for this to happen in each case the higher it goes). This would make picking up all uniques still desirable as they potentially could outperform best runewords.

    D2 lod isn't perfect, but it's hands down the greatest ARPG that's ever been made yet.
    There have been others that have captured me for 50 hours, or even 100s of hours..but I ALWAYS come back to D2. I can't say the same about any other Arpg

    Since 2001 or 2002 when I started playing Diablo 2 lod I've never found a unique Diadem, an unique Caduceus, an SoJ ring or some of the very rarest unique and set items. Since summer I started playing again but I don't have the energy or the same hype before to spent hours upon hours on the game trying to find every single item I got like 70, 80 left which I have found the forbidden way my character has 40k magic find and makes a lot of damage both elemental and physical. I've always admire players like MrLlamaSc who spent about a year or more trying to find Mang Song Lesson Stave, which is awesome. I just want to drop a unique Caduceus, yes by using bugged character, but I just want to see it drop the normal way. Plus since 1.14d came out there are no drop mods. So if I kill mobs instantly with 40k better chance does It really boosts percent of finding something unique and rare faster or not?

    Those odds? Like 1 : 25000 or whatever. Not fun. Not fun at all.
    As I keep saying, Diablo needs a drop rate boost. Otherwise, they are an awesome invention, yeah. Just those drop rates, man. Maybe it made sense during the heyday of D2, but nowadays? Yeah ... tough sell.

    I posted in the last video and I post here again. Runes and runewords are more or less the only thing that keep me playing Diablo 2. I wrote that I played last 15 years ago. It's more like 20 years ago and I startes again 1.5 years ago. I play singleplayer. The only thing that keeps me playing is hunting for high runes. I did not find most of the high runes (BER, JAH etc. my highestest is 3 OHMs). But still it keeps me interest like neither Diablo 3 or Diablo 4 could. Even simple farming in lower Kurast is somehow fun. I keep way to many items and therefore play with a mod (to have at least a bit more space). But it's fun and engaging. I never had a game that was similarly entertaining over such a long time (except WoW that I played for a long time).

    while I largely agree with you about why they feel good, divorcing yourself from the fact that you can get exclusive affixes on Runewords is ignoring the entire argument against them. If runewords were a compelling alternative to a unique I don't think anyone would bat an eye, but the moment you put on +1 tele, +400 flat, or +12 conviction as a runeword exclusive affix you are changing the balance dynamic between all other items and this new item.
    Additionally the modern "Update" philosophy of ABK on D2R being tied to "fixing" balance issues by creating a new exclusive affix to slap on a runeword further works to invalidate the current item pool; ie Mosaic. There are plenty of problems with the game as it stands, but not resourcing the team enough to do a core system overhaul is resulting in these band-aids that make the game worse for everyone; runewords are just the current worst offenders.

You're kind of late to the party when it comes to discussing topics of runeword,runes,etc on UA-cam as it's been done long before you actually hit this platform. I still love watching the streams posted on here from twitch and always do...just saying like. The "fresh or hot takes" on certain things have been played out. I honestly love hearing your opinion. But as throughout many of the twitch streams put onto your UA-cam channel, I have heard all of this before. Now we are actually getting you doing the " UA-cam" version, which I get . But it's like something I watch you uploaded 7 hours ago I've already watched about a year or two ago from you and others🤷

    Runewords should be class specific only items. But changes to shield+1handed weapons are also important. Having more slots in 1 hand over two handed weapons is bad balance, should be capped 3 for each piece. And remove class item drops from the game, dropping druid items when i play a necro is stupid. BTW White and grey items were used as temporary solutions until i find a better drop...They had a place before i think, but not in later stages of the game i agree. Blizzard had a good idea maybe, but execution was terrible.

    Poor non-buriza ballista hate 😢
    .. I loved trying to make a rare ballista work in classic PVP around 1.08. Threw a lot of people off by not using a rune bow and sometimes killing other zons with one solid GA. Was fun playing in an era where everyone had maphack on and you’d see red dots flying at you on your map.
    Speed lance barbs with a blinkbat and iratha’s chasing those zons while seeing the multi shot bullet hell on your maphack was a good time too 😂

    The balance in this game is absolutely amazing, from damage to health to leveling, it just feels right the whole time, and it’s done in plain balanced numbers, not like the new scaling mechanism which makes the game always feel the same, not only is it boring for the consumer but it’s also much easier to balance on their part, because that’s the trick, there really is no pvm balance vs your itemization, it’s more balanced to keep you engaged to the game and it’s two very contradicting core game mechanics that drive me back to d2 anyday.

    I like rune words and I think the argument they make the game less diverse is dumb because best in soot meta will always exist. However I think some of them (like enigma) are crazy over tuned and need balancing preferably through buffing alternatives.

    Sounds like a nice mechanic would be having rare affixes have a pool of "rune" affixes that can be scrapped to build an underling rune, and have to weigh against scrapping the good rare for the guaranteed affixes of using the rune in its runewords. This is distinct from the idea of a currency to scrap into and then build the rune from since that would just turn rares into "another version of gold". The goal being even if you roll something amazing or cool, if it's not what you're looking for, you can leverage that roll rarity to still get progress.

    D4 needs to undo/redo dropping the rarest items in the game at a higher rate from a farmable single target, it just encourages us to just keep farming the same target over and over and I fear this will be the system for the rest of the games life span. I wish I was encouraged that I could equally find one of those items anywhere while doing the other activities. And this isn't fixing the fact that still once you find these items, now they're guaranteed to max roll you have zero reason to keep hunting something, and I want something rarer to hunt for and be excited about like runes... Runes are almost the perfect item/drop in the fact that even if you find all the wrong ones you still have the chance to permute them upwards, or use them for someone elses progression or gg and so you're still excited to ALWAYS find one

    And the last one - with runes, you, basically do not need Magic Find affixes on your gear, because MF does not affect your chance to find runes. And you can simplify trade runes on Rares/uniques

    I don't know if it's just nostalgia, but item drops I'm D2 feel vastly better than any game I have played with loot.
    I think part of that is also due to shares loot, open trade and general drops for all classes

    One of the genius things about runewords is that they're only available for some of your item slots - they leave room for the other items to be unique/set/rare/crafted/magic

    No no no. When you drop a rune and its 1/6 of Call to Arms, its the same as you dropped 1/6 of this unique, you dropped 1/6 (1/5 or 1/4) or a lot of many other uniques. That is closer to reality. If we had not runes, but say "Call to Arms parts" and you drop 1/6 that is correct. That part is only for that item and that would be it.

    Sorry. Rune words are just uniques but with extra steps. There is nothing special with them, or interesting. You just get your uniques dropped in peacemeal, and it also trivializes the difficulty of the game.

    Runewords bring the most feeling of accomplishment offline where you had to grind for a week straight to cube up enough runes to get jah and ber from lower kurast.

    I see why some people dont like runewords and how powerful they are. But I am of the mind that more content is more content. I've been a diablo fan since it launched all those years ago. If the devs decided to make another act or create another tier of items, I'd be all over it. I just want more.

    the random part nature, the class ability's, the fulfillment, the chance part. sum it up d2 is a unique game it has a system that gives other class skills to other classes, not alot of arpg has. thats not all though it allows these bonuses in hybrid of a passive and active way.

    I found a Griffons going to the countess on TZ from a random trash mobs. A week later a Shako in the same spot.
